I'm an independent filmmaker currently working on my first feature-length film, called "The Game of Life". This channel is my diary of the process, from script writing, to casting, to equipment selection, blocking, editing, color-grading and more. Making these videos helps me work things out and learn them better for myself, and hopefully these lessons are useful for you too. Thanks for watching!
Breakthrough Filters: pricey but worth it.
Fair warning - this one really does drone on for a while. If you don't want to hear me talk aimlessly, feel free to move on. I won't hold it against you :-)

The secret ingredient has arrived!

As I start to get familiar with my new Sony A9 iii, I’ve been trying to find out how to make it play nicely with some of the stuff I use on my larger RED camera. This little beauty from Breakthrough Photography helped seal the deal! Since lots of folks keep asking: the right-angle USB cable on the LiDAR and focus motor is a DJI product, which I bought right here: amzn.to/3YLQ3uK

I took a flier on this thing, and so far it's been very rewarding. Not perfect, but a lot better than the reviews had led me to believe. Here's why this might just be my new favorite small camera.

I wasn’t thrilled with the standard DZOFilm lens caps, but found a solution with a combination of Aliexpress and 3D printing. I got the 95mm caps on Aliexpress. They're absurdly inexpensive, fit great, and they're very well made (metal lined with flannelette): www.aliexpress.com/item/3256803952269152.html Here's the STL for the lens cap toppers I designed, for those of you who want to print the...

I’ve been playing with the DJI Lidar system and it is really fun. But with my set up getting heavier and heavier, I wanted to see how far I could push the Ronin RS3 Pro. Turns out it’s pretty robust.
DZOFilm Arles: the Perfect Lenses?

For those of you who want to see more sample footage from my Raptor X or the DZOFilm Arles, enjoy! For those of you who think I talk about Arles too much ... well, this video may not be your favorite. I fell in love with the 50mm and 100mm demo lenses I got to review, so I bought the full set. This video explains why, and includes demo footage from all focal lengths.

This underappreciated lens set has been on my radar for a while now. It's a modern, VERY fast, clean set by the folks who make what has been one of the most popular budget cine primes ever (the original XEEN set). While the original XEEN lenses are getting a little long in the tooth, the newer Meister line definitely caught my attention. What are they like? Let's find out together. This is just...
MOTORLESS Follow Focus. Can we Make this BETTER???
Просмотров 1,1 тыс.3 месяца назад
Sometimes, I really want a stripped down ultralight camera rig. Canon's tiny RF lenses and other modern glass fits the bill really well, with some very impressive little optics. They even have their own integrated focus motors. So why can't we leverage those motors with wireless follow focus products? The ONLY obstacle is software. Canon, RED, Sony, Nikon, Fujifilm, Olympus, etc... can you make...

Great data EVERY time: RED V-Raptor [X] Workflow

By request, here's a bit of a breakdown of how I tend to shoot with the RED V-Raptor [X]. Come to think of it though, "RED V-Raptor [X]" is becoming a bit of a mouthful. I've seen "X-Raptor" used as shorthand and I think I like that, but I worry it might be confusing. Any other suggestions? Just "Raptor" maybe?
"Lens Compression" and Other Lies

This is a long one, so here are the topics: 1. Lens Compression doesn't exist. 2. Equivalency of Lenses exists, and it's important. 3. Anamorphics don't work as commonly described. 4. If you have some time to listen to this overlong rant, I'd love your opinion on my "lens quest" and the idea of buying just one exotic lens. If you want to look deeper into Equivalency of Lenses, then I highly rec...

RED V-Raptor [X] Review: Four Months of Awesome
You see any DR difference between the VV and the X? Struggling to find any real world tests of this on the internet.
Hey Spenser! Nice of you to stop by :-) I don’t have any direct comparisons, because I have not had both cameras in hand at the same time. But from everything I’ve shot, as well as from what I’ve seen around the net, there is extremely little difference. The noise pattern is a *tiny* bit more pronounced on the X, but you don’t even see that noise until you’re about seven stops under exposed. For all practical purposes, the X is equal to its predecessor in terms of dynamic range.
For more info you can check CVP’s video on the X, CineD’s lab tests, and Phil Holland’s posts on the reduser.net forums.
@@nick_salazar thanks for the reply
great video!
People change camera brands like they change socks.
Great setup! I was going to ask you how you like the Tilta cage, when I saw it's actually Smallrig 😅 Amazing that they look almost identical, yet several items can not be used interchangeably, ProRes Raw and other Raw battle like BS, costing filmmakers a lot of dough.
We are 3-5 year out from almost all mirrorless cameras having perfect Auto focus (except for Fuji) so I’d look at other factors and that global shutter is pretty good, plus TODAY Sony leads in AF. Good choice.
Lol how is breakthrough vnd the sceret sauce ??
There are terms you use that I don’t know or know how they apply. “Flange depth” and other concepts that I don’t comprehend. Wikipedia tells me the R system has a flange depth of 20mm. You cited 27mm. But, more importantly, I don’t how that ties in to the box you are talking about.
I’m sorry if this is confusing. Flange depth typically refers to the distance from the lens mount to the sensor or film. In the case of RF, yes it’s 20mm. In the case of PL it’s 52mm. So we use adapters to go from one to the other. Also, sometimes the term “flange depth” is used somewhat confusingly to describe how far back a lens protrudes behind its mounting surface. The Breakthrough adapter is a PL to RF adapter with drop in adapters. It can accept PL lenses with a rear protrusion of up to 27mm without hitting the lens.
Phase detect autofocus is awesome but I've only had limited exp. on it through the S5ii. I also own the DJI 4D and lidar seems snappier + not dependent on light, just doesn't lock on as well at times (micro focus hunting). Of course lidar autofocus accuracy falls off so far out but I find myself switching to manual at that point with a higher t stop in most scenarios, not as big an issue as I initially thought. What's your experience between the two mediums? Curious to hear your thoughts!
Each one has its advantages and disadvantages. For example, LiDAR will easily get confused if there are particulates in the air, like haze or smoke. It also isn’t great for faces if you are at an odd angle, like looking down at a face from above. Each technology is getting better all the time, but it is still really a matter of knowing what they can do, and when one or the other (or neither) is the best choice for your particular situation.
I love Breakthrough filters! I've been using them for years and have taken them worldwide. They're super rugged and super easy to use! I bought 3 Pyxis recently. I'm looking to purchase 3 of the DFM for each one. The L to PL version. *By the way- your videos are fucking awesome! These aren't rants! This is sharing your professional experience with a tool. I think some people forget that we are all colleagues in this industry. Good luck!
Nice Pionus
These Lenses look F$cking sexy!!!
Ok sooooooo please let me know where I can find your canon R5c raw workflow video because your footage looks amazing and I’m about to get rid of mine but after seeing your video I need to learn more of how you achieved these looks Talk soon
Thanks! Actually the Canon footage in this film is actually XF-AVC, not RAW. I usually do a CST into REDWideGamut Log3G10, then just regular primary/secondary adjustments, and usually FilmConvert for the final transform into 709 space. Mononodes DCTL checker to ensure good skin tones, but that’s not part of the final image, just a monitoring tool to help along the way.
Spot on Nick!
The position not reported back to the hand unit is a pain. I have had a couple times where I wanted to do hand focus on some close shots and when my ac took back over when walking out to get a kind of dolly out shot it jumps back and kills the shot planned. What I never was succesfull with was to get a longer lens running fine like my 50-135 s35 lens from laowa (ranger s35)
Gear is cool. I would shill too if given the opportunity. My buddy has a very successful studio in NYC and shoots on a 10 year old camera, he didnt even know what Blackmagic was when I showed him🤣
great review I used the ronin rs3 with the tilta ring include the Red KX. how's that set up? and how does this focus work with more then 4 people in the frame?
I’m not sure what you’re asking me about the Komodo. As far as lots of people in frame, it will usually default to one of them, it’s a little bit annoying to try and get it to pick a different one. But once it is on the person you’d like to prioritize, you just tap the trigger button once, and it will lock onto that subject.
@ oh okay thanks so it will only focus on one, let’s say we have a 5 people in a wide shot will it focus infinity or still just one?
With multiple people in shot it will pick a person (usually the closest one to camera) and focus on that person.
The Breakthrough system has been 🔥on my Raptor X, the range is also quite insane for a VND been loving it! Great video btw!
Nick are you still shooting your feature film, If so, can you share some BTS with us?
Still working … slow goings.
Wow! People are mean!
I "should" like your face , but I dont. Im just kidding dude, you look just fine, people are stupid. Anyhoo, that handle is dope!
Have you looked at Scatter instead of investing in filters?
Yes. I haven’t done a video on this but Scatter is rad. I plunked down for a lifetime membership about a year ago. Best $500 I ever spent on a filter.
You should try the Nikon Z8 and Z6III, you can adapt Sony lenses to it and the autofocus is just as fast & amazing as native. Internal Raw in them is phenomenal
If I ditch the A9 iii, it will likely be for something more cine-oriented, like a Canon C80. I do shoot stills sometimes, but rarely. I'm much more in the video world these days. And half the time, I just grab stills from the video anyway. 4k is enough for most stills purposes.
You are my favorite "bad guy" of the camera world. You speak on what they dont. You are on the rise, dont stop
Thank you!
cool, thanks. I will be ordering one now!
Sure thing! The only potential issue is that if you're focused all the way to infinity, you might not be able to insert/remove the filter, because although the filter is fine, the frame doesn't quite clear. If that happens, just rack back a little on focus, and then remove/insert.
Dude, I thought the Breakthrough adapter did not clear the Nisi Athena lenses...can you please confirm that it will? Thanks!
They all clear. I used them for six months with the Breakthrough. m.ruclips.net/video/_7n06NeMMm0/видео.html
6:32 ( hallation effect) Those Stories are Truth. on the 70's & 80's much used by Cine & Still image makers where practical effects on set right on camera was and still "a thing" for many, these days its all achievable on Digital Media and beyond as AR for exemple. Great stuff M8 keep it up !
so the reason I got rid of my nisi's is that they didnt clear my mofage poco!
hi Nick, i understand you had the mofage poco from one of your past videos. did you have the chance to test if these VNDs will slot in the poco? Many thanks in advance!
I’ve never used a poco. But no, these do not work. They are not cross compatible.
@ oh right im sorry! You used the breakthrough as well in your Athenas video 🤦🏻♂️
Great channel ❤
Have you tried the Mofage Poco ?
Oh man. So many people should look into adding filters systems to not only their lenses or camera systems. Thanks again for your video mate👍 Ps! Didn’t it have to be nylon netting from a very specific brand? And have you tried Nisi filters? I feel they are the ones that don’t give a strong colour cast to them.
Great stuff Nick! May go with the Meike, but these look fantastic!
Just found you and all your info this was awesome. Subscribed! My wife laughed at your pantyhose explanation btw lol

I like the style of your delivery. I sense an honest man. If you are wrong about something I don't feel it's intentional. What is this talking head shot on?
Thanks! This video is on the Sony A9 iii. I used to use the Canon R5 C for these PTC shots but I recently sold it in favor of the Sony. I have a video about that if you’re curious.
Keep doing your rants Nick! Love them
What? I can't believe you've received anything but the highest praise!! My day is uplifted every time you release a new vid., as I get to experience your journey which keeps alive the dream I have for my own future. You're the only one on RUclips who is a V-Raptor X owner, and shares their experiences using and supporting the use of that camera. Please Please keep it up and don't get discouraged by the haters. There will always be haters! As the saying goes, "Haters are gonna hate..."
I pretty love your build. I am also love to build my vraptor as minimal as I can, so I using an iPhone as monitor also because of less power consuming... and I can use a smaller v-mount battery for really run-and-gun use. I love your filters and make me very regret of using the red factory one.. more filter choice and the VND is smooth to adjust..
The color shift isn’t the biggest issue with vnd since it’s fairly easy to correct (in camera or post). The biggest issue is the polarisation effect and lack of control over it. Screw on filters are better in that sense since you can basically rotate the whole filter to dial in pola strength, but with this you can’t control it. And many ppl always think of reflections (or screens like you mentioned), but pola has a huge effect on skin as well so gotta be careful with it. But the regular NDs from breakthrough are great and would be the better option I think. Pricey though 😅 but the best adapter out there for sure. Good content!
Ignore the haters! & I loved that you sat outside while it was snowing 😂
🫦🍆, keep working it bro, he’s almost there… 🤣🤡
Awesome Video! Been looking for something like this.
What if you have a camera with a cage and the cage sticks out a bit on the left side? I dont have a box camera, but use a mirrorless and the left side cage pokes out a bit.
Oh, right! I forgot to point that out, but that is another benefit of the drop-in Canaan style filters, which I use on the Meike adapter. The adjustment wheel is much smaller, and it works with cages that protrude. The cage I have on my Sony protrudes as you describe, and it fits fine. The breakthrough will not fit.
@@nick_salazar Gotcha. So, a Meike adapter is the better choice, but you also said using Breakthrough filters?
Yeah that’s what I’m using on my Sony. Meike adapter with Breakthrough drop in VND.
@@nick_salazar Interesting.. but im guessing removing the filter still isnt easy? As Id prefer solid NDs over a variable.
@@michaelfrymus Yeah you have to take the adapter off the camera to swap. For your use case I'd stick with something like the Tilta Mirage, that system is very good and easy to swap.
Rear filtration is always a win 😊👌. I have the Meike version of this, its great value for money buying in a kit with a few filters. Having ND built into the camera is always my first preference though, but I do enjoy using them with a CPL or effects filter, rather than having one at the front of the lens. Can confirm my Meike adapter was made to the exact correct flange depth, use it quite often with my calibrated 25-250 cinezoom and it is still perfectly parfocal ✌hopefully their QC is that good for every unit they sell.
I learned a lot about Breakthrough filters... and women's clothing.
Spanx a lot Mark.
Bro, I find your Chan el not too long ago and I am a MAJOR fan! People are ridiculous! Finally someone in YT is doing genuine reviews! Keep it up man! We all love you
Thanks so much!
Keep killing it bro!
The piece to camera shot on the a9iii looks stellar! Any problems with regards to overheating?
Thank you! Yep it was the A9 iii. I did have the camera kill a shot at 30 minutes long once due to overheating, but that was before I realized that I needed to change its overheating setting. I haven’t tested it fully since changing that setting, hopefully no more issues now. I have had really mixed feelings, on the one hand it does a lot of stuff I really like, but on the other hand it has a few annnoying Issues that I have been working through. Now I’m mostly happy with it, but I wouldn’t say I’m 100% thrilled.
btw. there's also the Mofage POCO drop-in filter adapter. Works with Arles lenses too.
Yes but it won’t clear the Athena set. I bought the Breakthrough for its wider compatibility. And even though I sold my Athenas, I’m glad I have the option to use lenses like that with the DFM. A lot of anamorphic lenses protrude rearward as well and this will work with more of them than other options will.
@@nick_salazar ok, good to know.
I actually dropped $1k on one of these at NAB last year, I’m so excited to use it but my Iron Glass PL Mount glass doesn’t arrive for another year. Finally a RUclipsr making a Breakthrough video and not praising cheaper copycat Poco adapter!
The Poco is actually very good also.
Love your videos Nick. Instant watch every time. Footage, your taste in gear, and fashion style is all on point. Haters on the internet tend to lack a sense of purpose and meaning in life so they hate on people for their own fleeting ego boosts. Glad to see you handling it well
Thank you so much Steven! I really appreciate all the kind words.
