Great video and great channel! Xeen/Rokinon made a similar mistake with their anamorphic line, with no marketing and more twice the price of the DZO Pavos. For smart lenses with /iTech protocol, the Sigma High Speed Cine Primes are still the best value, below 4000 USD for one lens.
I had the Xeen Classics. There is a big difference in the coating and look in regards to the CFs. CFs are much sharper/smoother than the classics. There is a video comparing the Meister and CF, and there is a major difference in look. Both are great, just different. I do not care for the Meister size. I love the Xeen CFs.
I find the Tokina Vista lenses leave me feeling cold for some reason. Maybe it's the greenish flare, maybe it's the bokeh. I tested them out at Cinegear and did not like them at all. Plus they're quite big and heavy. Northwest Camera Co compared them against Arles and Sigma FF, maybe check that if you haven't: ruclips.net/video/wfkzu6qjPdk/видео.html
They’re the same optics as the original XEEN lenses (the non CF version). There’s plenty you can find about those lenses, I won’t be covering them unfortunately.
For what it's worth, I *DID* consider buying the XEEN CF lenses. The one thing they have better an Arles is that they're a bit lighter. But they have some serious onion skinning (especially on the 50mm) which I despise. They also breathe a bit, and there's no 100mm focal length (which I really like), just 85mm and 135mm. For me, Arles ticks absolutely every box I want it to, it's just the weight I wish was less. But that's the price you pay for such wonderful optics.
Thank you for this glimpse into lenses I otherwise wouldn't even know about, let alone have any experience with them! So, yeah Rokinon is apparently captained by a person or group of people who don't think in really practical terms. They seem to think of themselves as never being able to compete with the big boys - and so perhaps think they need a "gimmick" in order to stand out? I mean, without having met them, my knee-jerk appraisal would run along these lines. Look at the Xeen carbon fiber lenses - also evidence of a need to appeal based on "gimmicks". That's my take without actually having met any of the managerial staff? 🙂 So yeah, the focus breathing is a non-starter at $6,000 a pop (though the image is gorgeous)...
Honestly, focus breathing almost never bothers me in the least. Did you even notice it in any of the shots before I pointed it out? I did quite a bit of racking and I’ll bet you didn’t notice the breathing, which is significant.
@@nick_salazar You're right, I didn't notice! LOL. Btw, I went back and tried to see how much racking was done. When I listen to your videos, I'm mainly focused on learning what you're discussing and so what is being said kind of captures my attention. That being said I want to point out that at 6:20 where your'e showing the 4-pin data connector closeup, you can see one of the screws is coming out? I just wanted to point that out in case it might get lost?
Good eye! Yes I noticed that and fixed it already :-)

The electronic iris on the sp / XP was such a big mistake, even when it works, i don't trust it anymore since i had big problems on a timelapse shoot with an adapted Irix 150mm. The Timelapse was running for around 6 hours, and in the middle of the night the iris glitched opened and closed for a while and since that i simply do not buy lenses with electronic apertures that i need to adapt. But i hope Samyang makes simply a markII version of the XP/SP lenses with manual iris and a focus ring, just like back in the day they made a cheap version with gears and an expensive "xeen" version. I was so often very close to buying the XP series lenses but that keeps me from it
I’ve considered the various CP sets, but honestly, the NiSi Athena set is better in every single respect compared to the CP2 or CP3. Athena is the set I currently own and they’re great. But speed is important to me, so that’s why I’ve been interested in looking at faster lenses.
My sub $1k Meike FF 45mm circle 330 degree focus metal housed 85mm DOESNT breathe most of them barely if any breathing the 50 is the worst however they look almost identical to a Canon 85mm cine amd I have shot films on Canons cine glass myself...at the say T 2.8 or T4 - only difference visally is the canon glass opens to t1.3 and they are softer - but Price MATTERS - I dont need t 1.3 so t2.1 is fine for EVERYTHING I have used them on. My Gemini base iso 800 for petes sake... and LL is 3200if a slight DR loss is ok and it usally is if have to go LL
Yeah if you don't care about shooting wider than T2, there is a LOT of fantastic budget options. Meike, NiSi, Dulens, DZO Vespid, the original Xeen, 7artisans, Sirui, Laowa, etc. Honestly, breathing rarely bothers me at all. I think it's quite overblown in RUclips land. Many great films have been shot on lenses that breathe like crazy. It's something that matters if your subject is a test chart, but rarely in real life. People just ... focus on the person, the story, etc.
Remember that if you want to get a lens rehoused, it'll easily cost you $6k PLUS the original lens. And that's without the fancy titanium or i-data. People scoff at the Rokinon name, but the lenses are quite good. I wouldn't dismiss them out of hand.
I have rokinon cine ds lenses and the rehoused version called Xeen primes or classics. I love them 😊 but they're trying to overcharge for these rehoused lenses. And that's not cool. when they only charged 2500 for there rehoused cine ds lenses aka xeen classics.
@@tecno8335 It isn't cheap to add titanium or i-data electronics. You can argue those aren't necessary (as I do in this video), but I wouldn't say these are absurdly priced. I agree that it would be great to see these at a lower price, which is exactly why I suggest a lens with these same optics but more basic housings.
That lens image is really good

wow!!! you bought the whole Arles set? Congrats!!!
Best set also wanna buy the Arles set
@@shotbyd4vdme too. The arles are like if the Cooke S8i had a baby with a Zeiss Supreme Prime 😊
Half the set. There's 10 total.
I would love to see these versus the Tokina Vista.

Please cover the rokinon "xeen cf" , they are kinda in the same price with the Arles

@@nick_salazar thnx for the recommendation
@@nick_salazar and nice content btw, i hope u'll get check on sm of the V35 projects more especially the Arles version
@@Director_osworld my pleasure, thank you for the kind words! Yeah I'd love to play with the V35 stuff, and I think it will happen eventually 🙂
