The pilot is a hero. As far as I know he asked dispatch to turn back when the problem first showed up but dispatch denied as they did not want to have delay. Later near to Hong Kong dispatch told the pilot to "ditch" the plane in the water. Fortunately he did not follow and landed the plane at 10 Knots over the highest landing speed Airbus ever tried. A hero flew that plane!

Yeah, IDK why companies dont put a bigger emphasis on safety, flight worthiness and other 'money saving' things that prevent the plane from crashing. Seems like a plane going down, with the loss of 150+ people, 2 trained flight crew+Flight Attendants(which the company had to have put money into to train), along with the loss of a plane, would cost alot more than a maintenance delay.

The dispatch and the captain made highly questionable decisions that could have killed all the passengers on board. With erroneous and fluctuating engine instruments indications, fuel contamination should be suspected and a turn back is the only option. The pilot in command should follow his first decision to turn back and not allow dispatch to usurp his authority.

Cathay Pacific has great pilots. I flew them SFO to Hong Kong in 2008, there was a storm in HK, the captain made the safety first decision to divert to Taipei. I know someone on another airline from Manila to Hong Kong around the same we were scheduled to arrive, she told me she’d never been on a more harrowing flight and landing. On our flight we spent an hour on the tarmac in Taipei, the storm seemed to have passed in Hong Kong and the captain announced we were heading back to Hong Kong if he deemed it safe to land we would, if not we’d come back to Taipei. We landed safely nearly eighteen hours after taking off from SFO. Very impressed by Cathay Pacific.

And that at this awkward imbalance of engine power. What you did not mention is that the company cathay told the pilot to ditch the plane in the water....he fortunately declined and executed this heroic landing.

I actually watched a more detailed special of this on Discovery and they found the spheres destroyed the very filters in the refill depot. They were designed to protect against this type of potential hazard. And they redesigned the filters to be more tough at withstanding spheres. The issue was not with the plane.

Met and flew with both of these chaps when I worked for CX. Not only are they both absolute gents, but they also exemplify why pilots should still be treated with a great deal of respect and paid well above the minimal standards today's airlines are trying to implement. It always worries me to think whether guys like this are packing in aviation because of the substandard contracts and working conditions that are offered.
Make no bones, they could have easily crashed and killed everybody and we'd still have no real criticism for them given the circumstances. What they pulled off is an absolute masterpiece of aviation. Far more complicated and of greater difficulty than that of Sully in my opinion (taking nothing away from his feat of course).
They both had no idea what was happening. They both thought they were going to die, yet they fought that damn thing in all the way using the basic hand flying skills from their previous backgrounds.
Heroes. Deserving of much greater recognition.
EDIT: I note that the video does not show the steep turns they were carrying out to try to slow down the aircraft. It was how some of the passengers realised just how serious the situation was.

You sure do a great job with these. Just when I think I’ve seen about every aircraft incident or accident you post another one. Thanks for sharing! Unfortunately this may seem a little morbid with some of these accidents, but as a professional pilot they still are fascinating...especially with your video work. Good work and thanks again! Keep em coming.

Cool and professional flight crew, great to see - I love happy endings. So many of these stories end in tragedy, I find myself going "come on come on" to the flight crew each time I watch these vids, which is often. Btw, I wonder who dislikes these vids and why, there's nothing in nature so strange as people.
