    My wife saw these and told me we have to have some of these, so we picked up 6 from a local grower and I’m building them a separate pen and coop of their own to make sure they are not bullied by my other chickens, as these are my wife’s pets they will no doubt be pampered, we will likely grow them to sell not to eat and I may have them raise my young chicks and ducklings as I understand they make excellent mothers and will raise other birds young as their own.

    surprisingly my silkie is the most dominant hen I have. She’s always docile but if pecked by other hens she puts them in their place. I have 3 Rhode Islands and none of them are dominant over her. There even one Rhode Island that fears her.

    I’ve been bugging my parents to death to get a silkie chicken since we’re planning to get 3 or 4 chooks. We have a very small backyard but it’s the perfect size to have a silkie in it.
    And of course to show I’m committed to getting and taking care of my favourite breed of my favourite type of bird I’m researching the hell out of what I need to do to keep the chooks happy

    I hatched 3 silkies for our yard, unfortunately the heatwave killed two suddenly the other day. The third one, who has crossbeak is now an inside chicken so I don't risk losing her to the heat as well. She is so well behaved, I'm surprised how affectionate she is, much like a dog or cat. Spoiled to the bone, but nonetheless probably the best kind of pet you could ask for.

      Keep them inside when it gets too hot! Extreme heat will kill any animal, including humans. I'm getting chickens to keep in my house and I suggest you do to. My aunt used to keep her chickens inside before she died from cancer. They are very clean animals and they even make diapers for them.

    • @ahorseofficial
      @ahorseofficial Год назад

      @@mobstercrow7515 Yes, I'm keeping everyone inside. I'm in Texas and we've had many summers that would get hot, but never hot enough to kill our chickens (in fact they seemed comfortable in it). This was really strange and sudden, but I suppose it has to do with silkies specifically. None of the other chickens, dogs, or goats had any problem with the heatwave. Lesson learned I suppose :(

      @@ahorseofficial They have thermometers on amazon that you can connect to your phone so you can check the temperature inside of their coop and run. I highly recommend buying one! Silkies are also very bad for the heat and cold since they don't really have feathers.

    I love silkies!!! Late Spring this year I was at the feed store and rescued a malnourished extra tiny runt white silkie chick .I named him" Marshmallow." I adopted it long after my other chicks had grown and I had to figure out how to keep it happy while I was at work. I hung a feathered musical cat toy from the roof of the chick's enclosure. The chick loved the cat toy, snuggled with it and can now as a young adult can still imitate the cat toy sounds. My silkie has been slowly introduced to my feathered legged flock and is protected by several of the larger hens. He just started crowing at sun up this morning so now we know his sex.
    (I don't let him around my other more rambunctious flock though.) He's the cutest rooster I've ever seen and loves to cuddle with me.❤

    Do you have any tips for introducing silkies into a flock of other more aggressive breeds? I have a flock of 5 road island red hens and 3 Australorps. They have a massive coop/run and they free range in the afternoons. I would like to add some silkies but knowing that they tend to be more docile and will be much younger I am thinking it might be a bad idea to try and mix the two, though I don't really have the time or space to build a separate coop/run.
