I got 6 silkie chicks this spring, one passed and out of the 5 I had left one got his leg attacked by a raccoon we think, it tore his leg open to the bone. A vet visit we tried to save it but he ended up not using it so we had the vet amputate it. He's doing great, hops around on the one, balances with his wings. He's now our house chicken.
Thank you for this video!! I have silkies too and everything you have said in this video is so true!!! My silkies are very smart little birds. They are most definitely not stupid! My rooster has his moments of not being so friendly. Him just being him lol. I have a mixture of different breeds and different personalities. Love them all. Keep up the great and honest videos. You guys are great!!!
My very first silkie Millie was not friendly. We were gonna name her Cruella. So good to know I didn’t get a defector, lol. Thank you for this because my silkies are what you’re describing. They are just the cutest lil fluff balls.
OMGEEE! Your Naked Neck is the kind I have!!! My OH Henry is the one who I thought was a pullet. His name went from Lollipop Pink to Oh Henry. My coop is called The Sweet Tooth Silkie Coop so everyone is named after sweets- KitKat, Mocha May, Taffy, etc. I LOVE them!!!♥️♥️♥️
I had a little partridge hen she responded to her name when I called her “yellow bird” and another white hen. I will never forget them no matter how long I live
I have silky roosters. Elvis is black, Frost is white. They're not picked on but they've earned their positions. I have Americana roosters that are lower in the coop and the Austalorp keeps them in they've place. And my chocin is the little boss. He's first to breed, eat, everything. He has his favorite hens. But the silkies have their girl too.
We got a silkie by accident and I fell in love with him. He ended up being a rooster he was so beautiful unfortunately a fox got him and 2 others. My daughter got me 2 for my birthday I now have 5 they are very beautiful and smart. I could watch them for hours. I will admit I have lol. They are very good therapy if you’re having a bad day or just want to relax. Love mine
I agree with you about the friendly aspect. My friendliest ones have all been Silkie roosters. I too have been doing chickens for 35 years. They are just so fascinating and you don't know until you have some.
I just hatched out 9 silkies in my incubator. They are my first ones. The other chickens are RIR, Buff Orp, Gold Lace Wyandottes and 4 Polish. They are all my favorites lol. Love your channel, keep the videos coming.
I absolutely love my silkies! I live in WV so I can say they are both heat and cold hardy, provided they have ample shade in summer and a dry, draft free run in winter....definitely watch out for mudballs on their toes. And definitely make sure they have access to fresh water at all times. Some of mine are absolute lap birds that will come to you to be picked up and some are a bit standoffish....depends on how much I handled them as chicks and growing up. My roosters tend to be as loud as other roosters and most of my hens aren't really noisy but I have a few that are real talkers lol! One I even named Chatterbox because she talks all of the time.
I thought my silkie naked neck was a pullet but he is now crowing and doing his rooster business. He’s about 5.5 months. I hatched out a crele silkie and he’s now about 8 weeks. I will have 8 hens in a 10 x 16 ft horse stall turned coop. Can I have both as roosters for 8 hens? If so how do I integrate them in together and should I do that sooner than later. I want to keep both of them. Thank you
Thanks for the info. What are the chickens walking on? dirt? I am a new to raising chickens and have two week old chickens. I bought a coop and figuring out what I will use to use
Silkies have always been my favorite chickens! The Roos love to John Travolta dance for guests to impress them! They all love to be held! We transfer 18 day old incubated eggs to silkie hens and let them hatch, mother, protect and teach Their chicks. One of our chicks was named Princess by her new owner. She went to the state fair! As an amazing hen, she received Best Silkie and Best of Show. This fall, our latest Purebred Silkie Rooster received Best Silkie and Best of Show Chicken at the Utah State Fair! Took two non=laying Silkies through the winter as the lady was getting out of layers. Those two characters are completely different in their foraging: one hectare and they're IN the forest where other birds never go, dig deep. It's an old hospital ground with very large, old trees and if there's a coffee can with silver dollars or Gold coins, theyre' going to FIND it!!!
I love my silkies.5 in total. The flock in total is 6. The other hen is a dutch cresed fowl. She is my first chicken and love the fiesty girl. I have a other rooster also a cressed fowl but he has a big ego and fights with the silky rooster. So he lives on the other side of the fence with 6 normal chickens. They dont tollerate him being arogant so they keep him in check. I love to see the interaction betweem my chicks, both floks are balanced and being with them brings me joy. I would like more of the fluffy ones and the dutch cresed fowl. But getting them is not easy in Italy.
My silkie is a flyer. She has gotten used to flying into my apple tree. Same with my polish. Funny thing is she wouldn't roost until we got another silkie that taught her how
I’m in northern Alberta Very cold What is the best coop for cold areas I have heard nesting boxes should not be build on the outside of the coop because hard to keep nesting boxes stay warm in very cold regions
I agree with keeping the nest boxes inside up in Alberta. If your roof is high enough, it's not difficult to gather the eggs. Also, if you go inside the hen house, you get a chance to look for sick chicks and other problems. Best wishes.
I have a super aggressive silkie roo. Don't know what to do with him. Had to get him out of the rooster pen because he wouldn't quit fighting, I thought the other roos would kill him because he wouldn't back down and he was getting injured. He is now happy with 2 road island red hens I have pinned in there own run because they are egg breakers. However However he tries to attack me when I walk by through the fencing and always when I go in to tend with them.
What happens when a chicken dies of old age? Does it fall off it's perch at night or go to sleep in the day? Curious as I have two really old chickens and don't know what to expect.
We have silkie Bantans and they are the sweetest, most friendly chickens I have. I see you have yours in with ducks, we do too, however we’ve had the ducks kill 2 silkies trying to mount them. People should be careful as their silkie feathers are easier to grab and hold on to then other feather types.
I have 2 silkie roosters right now (1 is a black standard and 1 is a gray showgirl) U had 2 prior a standard buff boy and a black showgirl but they both died in the summer from heat-related), another died from a broken leg, 1 died from a cat preditor, I rehomed 7 mixed silkie chicks because I thought half were boys and they were all brooder mates, and I had 10 that my broody girl was going to raise and none of them are her DNA so what she said was correct. I have had 47 chickens in 2023 and only 1 was broody and she is raising all 9 as her own, she only had 1 pass of the 10. She is amazing and does all the work. They are all healthy and happy. The same lady I gave 9 chicks to before for her elementary class wants more. The only issue is the roosters, I have 2 and they are always trying to fight etc. so I have them separate. I love my silkie mixes too- show girls (silkie/turken), my cochin-silkie mix and my RIR-silkie mix. They are my favorites, but I do have bully issues from my RIR and cochins. My rooster boys now have taken charge and no longer bullied by the girls but my lil silkies are still being bullied. Unfornuately, 1 of my roosters likes to crow at 545 am etc and I live in a neighborhood so he is staying in side for the time being. They are small but people can still hear them
These are the coolest chikens that I ever see. My father used to train cock fights long time ago, but I always like the peaceful ones, and these silkies are super interesting.
My silkie rooster is so kind. I can carry him around and pet him and if I give the flock snacks he quicly claims credit as if he 'found' the snacks for the hens. My little hen though doesn't want anything to do with people other than snacks. Whe shes broody she make angry sounds and the occasion feeble peck, but that's its. Shes not a fearsome broody hen. She was excellent at hatching eggs, but not the best at mothering them. She kind of forgot about the older ones and focused on her youngest once they hatched.
For the silkies with the high crests, did you have issues with them being pecked and it causing damage? One of my silkies just died. She was being picked on and was pecked and sustained brain damage because of the vulnerability of her vaulted skull. 😢
I only have one silky and it’s a hen, she’s solid white and I was totally misinformed. What a showgirl silky actually is. I thought it was the solid white coloring. Tbh 🤷🏻♂️ but I call her Silky Mama and she is definitely an egg hatching machine. And her and my golden laced Polish rooster love each other. I’d like a solid white or solid black, silky rooster that’s about a year old. To mate with her but can’t ever seem to find one really. The one person I do know with a solid white silky rooster that’s about a year old wants five laying hens for it and I think that’s ridiculous. 🤦🏻♂️lol I have 10 Highlander hens, three golden lace polish hens, two black ones and three white leg horn hens as well so in my mixed flock she’s no fighter but she’s a defensive momma for sure broody or not. And to say the least, I’d be devastated a little bit, if something happened to her. So she actually stays in the garage instead of the coop with the other chickens & loves to roost a few feet off the ground . She’s pretty talkative and will talk to you when you talk to her and if you don’t talk to her first or don’t acknowledge her, she makes her presence known and starts a conversation. lol & very proud when she lays an egg Sings away for the town to hear lol

I chose silkies as my first chickens. I am getting a dozen hatching eggs this week.

2:42 “they are not dumb, they just blind” got me rolling😂💀

The gated (ex-pen) type enclosure you have is adorable! Where did you find it? Is it for gardens?
Thank you for all the tips.. This is my first time having Silkie. Learning as I go. Your video has helped .Plus, i like the honest
Thank you! I have 2 a male and female and had no idea how to care for them. This really helped me!
Buen dia, thx for pleasant, informative video. Have raised silkies and much enjoyed them. So many positive things about them.
Great video! Just got three white silkies 👍
Thank you! My eldest daughter came home with silkie babies. No clue what we’re doing as all our girls are big! lol

They're hard to find right now! McMurray is sold out! Anyone know any reputable hatcheries around where I can purchase some
Very informative. Thanks for sharing!
I had silkies one time. They were not super friendly. All the Barred rocks I've ever had have been super friendly and have allowed holding.
Thanks for the info. What are the chickens walking on? dirt? I am a new to raising chickens and have two week old chickens. I bought a coop and figuring out what I will use to use
I have extremely friendly silkies I think because I hand raised them myself after hatching them myself.
That was my question. What if you get them as chicks and socialize them…
Naked necks are sooo precious! Do silkies tolerate heat well? Gets crazy hot and humid here in Georgia
They really don’t like the heat but people do keep them in those humid southern states. Just take extra precautions to help keep them cool

My silkie roo is mean lol my younger silkies are so smart and friendly they come to me every time 🥰
Have a wonderful wedding 🎊 and Congratulations! Best Wishes….
I have some silkies i have like about 7 they are so adorable and so fluffy there is about like 2 roosters and 5 silkies i think
I have a super aggressive silkie roo. Don't know what to do with him. I live in Lancaster CA. N I just got 4 silkies one moth old
What breed of chicken do you think is most a lap chicken?
My Easter eggers (ameraucana) are so friendly and love flying on my lap or on my shoulder and arms if I’m down on my knees
What happens when a chicken dies of old age? Does it fall off it's perch at night or go to sleep in the day? Curious as I have two really old chickens and don't know what to expect.
I suppose it depends what takes them. Sometimes when I chicken suddenly dies like that, like off a perch it’s due to a heart issue like a heart attack
@@BockBockBouquet Oh that makes sense.

I have a silkie i named ducky because she makes duck noises. Shes so sweet.
Can you do a video on chicken names

Do silkies lay a nice size egg?
Yeah they lay a medium sized egg.
Are silkie roosters loud?
Yep lol.....they are usually just as loud as any other rooster.
SOO CUTE😍😍😍
My silkies are so nice!!!!!!

You can always give them a haircut so they can free range.
👍🏻😎🇺🇸
She is HoTT 🔥
This was an awful video
