Donkey Kong and Sabreman... what do these two video game characters have in common? Well, in turns out that both Donkey Kong Racing and Sabreman Stampede came from a game based around Diddy Kong Racing, which released for the Nintendo 64 back in 1997. And on this episode of Beta64 minis, I'm going link the two games together and explain what happened to both of these cancelled Rare titles in 7min 46sec. Enjoy!

I almost cried when I saw what they've done to Donkey Kong Racing in this video. So much potential for a great sequel to Diddy Kong Racing!! Why must it be this way?! =,(.......
Me too Lincoln loud was sad they’ve done to Disney’s Gigantic
fun fact: screen shots of this are on the back of the GameCube console box.
buttsmear45 Oh really?
okay, its been a while since I looked at it. maybe its just one, but its definitely there.
you got me. satisfied?
You are correct, it is just one but it's there. Only on the very first wave of boxes though. You would have had to get the console within the first few months after launch. Nintendo changed the boxes yearly with new games to hype.
buttsmear45 yes!☺
Attitude Era Gold Mine well you to keep people's intest.
Wonder if the guy who said "it's too old school" was responsible for the horror that is nuts and bolts.
Dude, this game was a 3d platformer where instead of being on foot, you rode around.
IT PRETTY MUCH WAS NUTS N BOLTS
Skull Plays Rare was and still is in a strange position, like in a limbo of sorts. Nuts and Bolts was a lot of things before the final release.
+ Skull Plays
Did you know?
Nuts'N'Bolts was actually a Banjo-Kazooie racing game that had the same building mechanics from Nuts'N'Bolts, but Rare decided to scrap the idea in favor of working on Banjo-Threeie. Also, did you know that Nuts'N'Bolts was originally supposed to be a TipTup game? Yeah, the Turtle from Diddy Kong Racing was supposed to have his own game but it was scrapped and changed to Nuts'N'Bolts
+Uncharted Onion
Well, that's pretty interesting.
+Uncharted Onion
Nope, maybe you should watch the " Making of Banjo Kazooie Nuts & Bolts " at Rare's RUclips channel.
After Grabbed by the Ghoulies, the Banjo Team worked on Banjo X - a Banjo Kazooie Remake, after that they thought about a Banjo vs Grunty game and after that they had the right idea with Nuts & Bolts.
+Iguana G-man
It was originally Tim Stamper's Idea to include vehicles in Nuts & Bolts.
I really wish Sabreman Stampede still came out. It looked rad.
I forward that! I can imagine with a bit more plot direction, exploring the environments shown on animals that progressed with you would have been awesome!
Presumably that's what the higher-ups meant by too "old-school". That sort of attitude and the rising price of game dev I think were the start of the cancer that is killing mainstream games.
Starfox 2 come 20 years later, so why not!
This video went from talking about awesome to really poor decisions really fast.

It really makes me sad to hear what happened to the game during it's development. Oh I would love to see a sequel to Diddy Kong Racing one of these days...
Sabreman Stampede actually looked pretty dope. What is wrong with people for just up and cancelling potential classics like that...
Add insult to injury and we ended up with Donkey Kong Barrel Blast/Jet Race.
@@KetwunsGamingPad we also ended up with the legendary diddy Kong pilot
Honestly I would have loved to play either Donkey King Racing or Saberman Stampede
All hail the Donkey King!
SlingSter7 Lol
I have to admit, that Stampede game still looks fun, if they had more time and money I am sure you could have made something great out of it. This reminds me of an Arcade game I played, where you were on a Safari and had to catch the Animals with a rope as well. Could the games be related?
"too old school"
This sounds like something fuckin IGN would say
I had no idea Nintendo turned down Rare's offer to buy them out. Plus, why did Rare think that Sabrewolf was too old school? At least Kameo was a good game.
Well it was a contractual thing, when Nintendo bought half of the company (roughly) in the 90s they put a stipulation that they would be #1 in line to do a full buy out of Rare if that ever became a possibility. Not shocking, given Nintendo essentially funded Rare for over a decade. In retrospect it was probably a wise decision not to buy Rare. Rare's wheelhouse, for the most part, was things that Nintendo already had internal development teams who excelled at (i.e. platforming), and a lot of talent had left Rare by the 2002
Nintendo should have bought Rare. that was their biggest mistake
Carlos Montero Lol Nintendo sold rare to Microsoft
PhoenixFIrebird Nintendo didn't wanted to share with microsoft xbox with Rareware games (and Donkey kong & Star Fox). Nintendo Sold their part of stake of company! Rare ask Nintendo to fund more money,Which they did,But told them make games on Gamecube not on N64 anymore! Actvision told them ,I offer 1.1 million for making games under Actvison (As A 3rd Party)
,But Xbox Offer more console space, more controller options, and More Money with 3.9 million! Xbox Wanted get Donkey kong,Star Fox,and Golden 007 for Xbox Only titles but Nintendo Remained those rights!!!! Rare only made remakes on xbox (At this point Rare partners knew they fucked up) and some Games on 360 and Some crappy Kinect games!
Nah, I’d say botching the deal with Sony was a bigger one. If Nintendo hadn’t embarrassed Sony by announcing a partnership with Philips (one of their biggest rivals) RIGHT AFTER Sony proudly announced their partnership with Nintendo, the PlayStation likely wouldn’t have existed at all, besides as a CD add-on for the SNES. (The PS1’s development was greenlit by Sony’s execs to “get back” at Nintendo for leaving them at the altar, so to speak.)
In a partnership with Nintendo, they would’ve likely pushed for CDs for the N64 as well, which means FFVII could’ve been there, among many others.
With only the Saturn to contend with, Nintendo would’ve soundly won the 5th generation. (The 3DO and Jaguar would still probably pose no threat in this hypothetical timeline.)
And heck, even on into the 6th gen, the GameCube would’ve likely won as well.
Thanks Microsoft, for killing 2 promising looking titles...
Cynder Just because Nintendo didn't want to buy Rare, didn't mean they weren't planning on renewing a share with Rare as a 2nd or 3rd party developer again. Microsoft couldn't risk anyone having a share in what made the N64 era a big success, and took it all for themselves, with no plans or productivity they used to their advantage. Buying out Rare is probably the biggest mistake Microsoft has ever made, and I don't think they ever made back the money they spent for buying out Rare, through the sales of Rare's games made for Xbox consoles.
Cynder Which is why they shouldn't have bought them!
No kidding, just look at who was just elected president! God, I am so sick of these idiots who run the world...
SpongicX Yeah Obama was bad but at least we have Trump now! B)
Microsoft couldn't have bought out Rare unless Nintendo sold its 49% share in Rare. Which Nintendo did because they didn't want to buy out Rare.
I honestly really wish this game was made. It probably would've been even better than Diddy Kong Racing, due alone to the fact that you play as actual Donkey Kong characters
Not gonna lie
That Sabreman Stampede prototype looks fun as hell. Obviously it lacks purpose, but I would play the shit out of a game like that.
I'm surprised they didn't just use Poachers and Aztec-ish warriors for the Sabreman plot, would've worked, especially on an island like that
What a shame, the prototype looks really good
The only one time i ever saw that game, it was on an videogame magazine, some screenshot of that game was showed on a couple of pages about the Gamecube upcoming games, The only screenshot i remember was the title screen one and the characters portraits.
I was really excited when i was reading how the was gonna to be and i was wanted to buying it, but sadly i never saw it and even more when i learn the game was cancelled. :(
So, like you said.
What a shame...
Rest in Peace, Rareware and Donkey Kong Racing
I was so pumped as a kid to play Donkey Kong Racing. Waited, waited, waited, cancelled. Was so disappointed. I'm 32 now and still pissed off and want someone to make this happen!
Somebody make a petition to get this game created!!!!!
this is why i despise Microsoft. they killed a game developer that was dear to us. hopefully Playtonic can give us these type of games we love again.
Skate|2|EDM We will see them eventually.
By the time Microsoft bought them most of the original staff was already gone, the company was dying and Nintendo basically said fuck you to them
Nope. That happened AFTER the buyout.
Grabbed by the Ghoulies & even Nuts & Bolts were made by most of the Banjo Tooie Team. The Playtonic founders left Rare in 2014 after Kinect Sports Rivals and even today there are over 20 employees from the Nintendo days at Rare, like Gregg Mayles, Robin Beanland and others.
So it's definitely wrong, that most of the original staff was already gone, when Microsoft bought them.
+Yuki Hayashi
The original team of Rare quit after microsoft bought them. Nintendo fucked up by not buying Rare. Admit it.
I'll admit, for something like a kart racer, DK racing sounded REALLY ambitious. Sabreman Stampede looked awesome though.
Rare sold their soul to Microsoft and lost so much of their creative freedom. It just goes to show, money can't always buy happiness.
GamingManeuverAlpha I guess so.
GamingManeuverAlpha and thats why many indie games are "better" and more praised than some triple a games.
yeah but if they stayed with Nintendo, they wouldn't have enough money to create games they had ideas for and Nintendo did have a chance to buy Rare which they surprisingly denied so they pretty much had no choice.
They sold their soul to ninendo actually, but nintendo didn't want more souls - yeah, yeah also they where in a bad spot at the time, with the development of Many, MANY games for the GameCube.
And then Rare sold their soul to the best offer.
That was a really sad event in the history of VideoGames. / Just imagine what awesome games Rare could done for nintendo consoles. Also Banjo in Smash bros sounds like a dream.
Indie is definitely more fun to make as I have found, that is for sure...
Just watching Beta 64, then bam! new episode!
Your new mini series is super good.
But something is bothering me.
Since they are shorter, how much content or information do you leave out? And after that, they are probably out for a full episode right?
Or is it less about the BETA/Testingstage and more about the DEVELOPMENT of either unreleased or released games?
+Bärti I left out nothing. This series is just for games that don't have a lot of info.
That is great!
make a beta of plants vs zombies 1
Pasty's Bakery lkr!
Would you rather have a 30 minute video describing the pointless changes like "this part was red...now its blue. This part was green, but its yellow in the final release"?
Sounds awesome! Can't wait for this game to be released.
More like Beta32
Luis Luna best thing I have heard all day
ha haaa
That's cute. :)

Nintendo should really merge this and "Diddy Kong Racing" into one huge game. Entitled "Donkey & Diddy Kong Racing".
I think that'll be way too much.
Nintendo denying the offer was one of the stupidest thing ever done in the history of gaming...
Rare... Put your sh*t together, do games like the ones you were supposed to do and not stupid mini-game, virtual console, dumb new ip's. Microsoft killed Rare
The guys at Rare now aren't the same guys from before. The only thing they can do the same is use the old IPs
no rare killed its self microsoft was more than happy to work with them and said that they can make games that rare would like to make but they didnt come up with much so that what kinda go before they went and did things like make a 3th banjo game and then they went for a diffrent id and thought lets make it more like the kind a kid want now and throw a 3d platformer out for a collector race built game and slap banjos name on it if microsoft knew that rare didnt make the games where they where bought for i think microsoft didnt even think of getting rare from nintendo rare best sellers where that kind of games and when they went to microsoft they just didnt know what to do and burried there grave alone
PootbirdBlazin lol yeah i know but im not english so i think it's because of that
*Nintendo killed Rare.
Beta of Crash Twinsanity, Please?
That'll be a long one.
SuckTheLand -Lara- Pretty sure the released game is the beta...
One thing is that Coco is going to have a Bigger role in the game but nope, they had to REMOVE a lot of the roles and Coco has a Tiny role.
Man, Donkey Kong Racing could have been a great game for thw gamecube, but When Rare was seeing if Nintendo could buy them out, Nintendo Haaad to Decline that offer, & Microsoft haaaad to buy them out & rework it into a different game.
I really would like playing that last version of Saberman Stampede. It seems like a Super Mario 64 meets GTA or something.
The early concept of Donkey Kong barrel blast
Beta 64, You should've also mentioned that Rare did try to make another sequel to Diddy Kong Racing, this time for the GBA calling it Diddy Kong Pilot....which eventually became Banjo-Pilot.
Love your channel, man. I really enjoy diving into the mysteries of all the games that fascinated me so much in my childhood.
Thanks and keep it up!
Diddy Kong Racing was very cute game but frustratingly difficult. So I rage quitted and sold it. So I probably would not have bought this sequel. :D
Saberman Stampede looks awesome! Sucks that it was canned. those higher ups really didn't know what they were talking about. Same reason Nuts and Bolts was ruined.
"POINTLESS OBJECTS!?!?!?
YEAH, BECAUSE THIS WAS TOOOOTTTALLLY WHAT BANJO-KAZOOIE WAS"
Surprisingly it seems like the Jet Force Gemini/Mickey’s Speedway USA team were the ones working on Donkey Kong Racing! The Diddy Kong Racing team were still working on Dinosaur Planet/Star Fox Adventures when development on Donkey Kong Racing first began, as seen in this production timeline shared by Rare staff: twitter.com/richardg4/status/668425134693191680?s=20
Beta64: Less than 8 minutes
Time: 8:22
Me: YOU LIED TO ME!!!
Sabreman Stampede looks pretty damn kool. Goddam Microsoft, why did you have to kill these projects...
So... Microsoft buying out Rare was Nintendo's fault?
...Why are we crapping on Microsoft again?
regardless of who bought out Rare, Microsoft destroyed the studio. It's irrelevant if Nintendo didn't decide to keep Rare. Microsoft made some terrible decisions on how they handled the studio
@@mountaindewslave actually Microsoft let Rareware do whatever they wanted when they making games of Banjo or Conker games
So Rare was making a caveman-themed RTS... that was changed into a racing game... that had DKC characters shoehorned in at the last minute... that then earned a sequel starring MORE DKC characters... that was shelved because Rare no longer had the rights to those characters... that later became a platformer that was a spinoff of an obscure ZX Spectrum game.
What a roller coaster ride.
HERE'S YA PHOTO
Hey you talked about this on Twitch! Glad to see it up today :D (I'm buttersolis btw)
I remember that Donkey Kong Racing was one of the games advertised on the box of the GameCube that I received for Christmas right around the time of the GameCube's release. I thought that Donkey King Racing was a great idea, and I've been wondering for quite a long time (10+ years) what happened to it. Thank you for clearing that up.
Did Rare ever make a game that was originally planned as that very game from the beginning? :D
This may be a little bit far-fetched - but I think it's similar to Banjo Kazooie: Nuts and Bolts in a way. You could run around in an open area, use animals (or in this case - cars) to get to different places, and walk on foot too.
I'm pretty sure the Donkey Kong Country games were always meant to be the way they turned out
They should get the Yooka-Laylee team to make Donkey Kong Racing for the switch.
Robin Burn Dude wtf? That is actually a really good idea!!!!!!!!
If they can, that would be a great idea!
That's... Impossible
Damn, I have no doubt that Sabreman Stampede would’ve been my favorite post-buyout Rare game, it looks sick.
On the one hand it's sad that the brilliant ideas of Donkey Kong Racing weren't implemented, but on the other hand I'm just glad that Kiddy Kong is officially dead, that Dixie wasn't once again replaced by Tiny and that Taj didn't get to ride elephants or tiny rhinos.
Real shame how this turned out. Sabreman Stampede sounded like a really cute 3D platformer with some neat ideas. I guess we can look forward to Sea of Thieves, but apparently that doesn't have much in the way of objectives either.
Rare Employees: *I Want to make an 3D platformer*
Microsoft: *No... You make pinatas farm*
This is actually one I really wanted you to do.
Omg how did i miss this? It's almost a month old & i didn't even notice it in my subscription box.
Nice video tho.
dude, i want that finished sabreman game. that looks like it would have been fun if completed .
damn shame.
The closest we have to this game is Donkey Kong Barrel Blast, which I actually liked.
Come at me, haters!
I remember seeing this in a game informer or some magazine from 2001. I was excited.
Beta64 this was such an awesome video also for your next episode do you think that you will talk about the beta of Diddy Kong Pilot / Banjo Pilot????
that would be an awesome video, also there is a playable rom of banjo pilot available
Banjo Pilot DID get released officially, Diddy Kong Pilot however only have a prototype rom (which is made before the game changed to Banjo Pilot).
P.Scoop oh youre right, I mixed the 2 names eheh
This is so depressing. I feel so bad for the people at Rare so many good ideas where destroyed. I hope Playtonic can make a game like the original Donkey Kong Racing (w/o DK characters of course) because I would love to play it
I would've loved to play this game!
Potential characters stats
Donkey Kong-Speed 3/5 Accel 3/5 Turn 3/5
Diddy Kong-Speed 2/5 Accel 3/5 Turn 4/5
Kiddy Kong--Speed 4/5 Accel 3/5. Turn 2/5
Tiny Kong--Speed 2/5 Accel 4/5 Turn 3/5
Lanky Kong-Speed 1.5/5 Accel 4.5/5 Turn 1/5
Taj----Speed 5/5. Accel 1/5. Turn 1/5
Cranky Kong-Speed 2/5 Accel 1.5/5 Turn 5/5
As weird as it may sound, I actually disagree with whoever says that Sabreman Stampede had no story/progression/objectives. In fact, I can remember at least other three (or four, depending of one's POV) games that followed a similar main purpose: Toejam & Earl, Starlink: Battle for Atlas and No Man's Sky (the fourth one would be Rare's own Jetpac). These games revolve around the exploration itself, with the story serving only as an excuse to put everything together.
You know, some time's passed now that I think Nintendo should still be able to revive "Donkey Kong Racing", unless Rare is still needed. The prototype will need a big facelift though.
I don't know why they would switch from racing vehicles to racing animals. It kind of seems like the devopers were taking one of the major elements that made Diddy Kong Racing successful (i.e. the vehicles) for granted when they were planning Donkey Kong Racing. The developers assumed everyone would just be okay with the change. It seems to me though that a Diddy Kong Racing sequel could have just added new vehicles like submarines or helicopters, new characters, new levels, new battle modes, etc.. I think that would have been much more along the lines of a true Diddy Kong Racing sequel compared to having the characters race animals instead of vehicles.
For all the people saying Nintendo was stupid for not buying Rare, keep in mind, that Nintendo then received the money they needed, not just to keep going in the industry, but also to develope the Wii and the DS. And not to mention, that Microsoft ruined Rare, with all of their desicions.
Nintendo declining buying Rare... Microsoft buying it instead.. Biggest fucked up transaction of the industry... everybody lost with it.
In the dk racing trailer you can hear Mario’s beta burning butt voice
Hey I'm pretty early to this for once!
Why did you keep looping that ostrich clip? (Asking the important questions now)
What'd I miss in the stream last night?
Such great concepts and ideas could've provided us with a solid alternative/accompaniment to Mario Kart.
Fuck it! Just take the core concepts and evolve them into something amazing, Nintendo!
Finally you release something...
Come on! The Diddy Kong Racing episode wasn't released that long ago!
Dick Gumshoe true but it feels like an eternity
Zaiman12345 #LocaliseDGS #LocalizeDGS Then you could go and watch Beta64's livestreams. He sometimes do lives about betas, but they're mostly just for fun. So if you need more Beta64 in your life, go see his livestream channel and his Twitch channel!
When he started talking about donkey kong racing i was like... What the fuck??? Did i actually miss a whole ass game and i started looking for game play ong cost for a new disk and finally i came back to watch the rest of the video and i was like ohhhhhhhhh
Nice! Sometimes it can be good to get some info out on a game even if there may not be enough info out there for a full episode.
Always a shame hearing about Rare from this era. It seems like a lot of games got disrupted when the switch happened.
I liked this video as I do all your other ones Andrew. hopefully this mini ones becomes a new series. 😊
I think the villain would be Wizpig cause that teaser at the end
...
WHAT NO WHY WHY WHY NOOOOOOO
COME ON
ALL OF MY SADNESS
Both games looked very interesting. Damn you Microsoft...
Also fun fact on the back of the american box of the gamecube console you can see images of several games one of them is donkey kong racing
This kinda makes me sad to know what could of been but never will.
Luis Luna should have a good idea for +Beta 64. The mini series could be Beta 32.
Sabreman Stampede sounds like what would happen if you put The Simpsons: Hit and Run, Banjo-Kazooie, and Donkey Kong Country in a blender.
What a complete missed opportunity for Nintendo. Not buying Rare must have been the biggest blunder Nintendo has ever done.
You know now that i think about that it looks like Sabreman Stampede main objective is much similar to that hit game Minecraft minus the crash landing part. And guess what? Both of these games are now Microsoft's possessions though Rare and Mojang.
This may be a little bit far-fetched - but I think it's similar to Banjo Kazooie: Nuts and Bolts in a way. You could run around in an open area, use animals (or in this case - cars) to get to different places, and walk on foot too.
eyyy! my boi, this one week without a video felt like a month!
Thank you for this minibar! Happy late Halloween!
I had a dream about donkey Kong racing last night but it was like diddy's kong racing with the n64 graphics and they where driving the karts from diddy's kong racing and they where all diddy's size and chunky kong was squished in a two foot bug kart.
no developer could have made a game that ambitious.
I do get why they dropped the game. In the end it wasn't even a racing game anymore.
Thanks, when I saw the Diddy Kong Racing, that game imediately come in mind.
Still a huge loss, nobody thought of a look alike even now...
Sabrewulf is a game aswell and a character in killer instice sabreman is a character in banjo tooie he says hes from 1984 HMMM
Nintendo not purchasing Rare was the worst and most stupid mistake Nintendo ever made, period.
8 minutes I wouldn't call that a mini but I still loved it keep up the good work
Thankfully that sequel wasn't made. I would have been disappointed.
Someday, I hope they make another diddy king racing remake
Woah woah WOAH! At 8:00 you can see Sabreman doing a maneuver which is remarkably similar to an certain level in an old gamecube Tarzan game. Did that mechanic get recycled?
Never even knew about the sequel. It's a shame it never was finished.
You said this was going to be released sometime this week but I didn't expect the day after your livestream!
the donkey kong world world be great for a racing game, actually would still feel original yet classic
lets port Tetris to this new console/gaming equipment.
Nah, thats too old school
I waited forever for this game ever since I saw pics in a Nintendo magazine. I eagerly expected all the games that Rare announced for the GameCube that never came out. A goddamn shame really
The worst game cancellation. Both would have been very fun to play
