Stop using oil like this when you are cooking, you're adding more calories than you think

  • Please be careful when using oil in the kitchen when you are cooking. Calories add up really quick and you might add more calories from oil than from your actual meal. Hopefully, this video helps a bunch of people understand calorie density :)

    This was one of the biggest revelations for me. Between butter and oil, I was adding many hundreds of unnecessary calories to my meals... during the prep and after. This short informative video puts it in perspective. Something else that helped me is that I switched from using cast iron pans to nonstick pans (I admit that this was a difficult change as I love my cast iron pans). This change helped me completely eliminate the oils and butter that were only getting added to prevent sticking. A bonus to this change is that I believe the flavors of the food stand out more as the food is no longer soaking in butter and oil, which would tend to over power the other flavors.

      Same for me. I always thought olive oil is super healthy because in Italy everyone tells you this. I was pouring oil over literally everything

    Theres no problem with cooking with oil as long as u are self aware.

      I've been putting in a bit of mulch cooking oil for the past 6 years now
      I just use a bit I don't go mad with it anymore
      I think it was a habit or maybe I was worried incase my food got burn

    In some countries oil spray is not widely available but what you can do is put some oil in the pan and wipe it with the paper towel. Should be a lot less expensive overall.

      I just bought a refillable spray bottle for the oil. It like 10 USD. Much less expensive and more environmentaly friendly than buying these oil sprays.

    Ok but how much of this _actually stays_ on your food when cooking in a pan. Unless you are making a pan sauce, the vast majority of that oil in my experience stays in the pan. This obviously varies depending on the food, like how neat has a little sheen of oil well still leaving almost all of it in the pan, while veggies would definitely absorb a lot more oil. The salad example is very good though, as though a bit will likely just be left at the bottom of the dish (unless you lick it clean lol), the majority stays on the ingredients. Mostly I'm just curious what the actual numbers would be as opposed to just saying "this is how much oil you put in the pan", as technically I put about 12,600 calories of oil into my pot for deep frying, but from checking the weight difference of the oil, about 214 calories of oil gets into my meal, and that's because it has absorbent flour coating it.

      Just want to add that this isn't me denying that it adds calories, however it doesn't help my tracking if I'm adding a bunch of stuff that doesn't actually get into the food you know, the exactness of the tracking is what I'm looking for lol

      I saw on another video approx 7 g oil gets absorbed if using no bread/flour to coat chicken for 200g. So perhaps 50 kcals or so. With breading 26g, so 5x more (plus the breading/flour)... So if cooking it lean less of a problem, others upwards on 250kcals! 😢

      @@MrNutritionFreak it was actually another RUclips video, search for "how much oil gets absorbed when deep fried" or similar. However, I tried it myself and my chicken without any breading absorbed 30g or so, not ideal 😅🔥 I'll probably stick to simply braising steak if using oil 🥩 Tried with sesame oil and beef yesterday, and only 15g got absorbed 😊 Found it: ruclips.net/video/F8FI60jCkMw/видео.htmlsi=hWB2FhTjBqNcWIUk

    usually i weigh out oil separate from the ingredients in a shot glass lol or reverse weigh out butter which is the unhealthiest but the easiest way to do it

    As dressing I always use greek yoghurt or low fat mayonaise with mustard, salt, peper and garlic powder

    I am speechless 😶 .. I am training since 2015 .. I never thought i will get fat even made a joke of people saying we get fat so easily.. but then covid came and. i got fat and stopped training for like 2 years straight… now I am again at almost 20 to 22 percent body fat but struggling so Hard to bring it down to What I was like 13 to 15 percent body fat.. I have been eating healthy from months now and Today Out of nowhere watching videos about oil .. I found your video … now i know What’s wrong with my diet… i use virgin olive oil … I thought I don’t use alot so no need to count calories.. finally ordered a spray for oil ..I can’t Thank you enough

    If you were to pan fry, how much oil actually gets soaked into the food?
    I know some times I have oil left over from cooking steak. I presume not all of the oil is actually being eaten, thus why I ask.

    I love the spray and have been using it, but it's also impossible to measure how much oil you're using. I always just count it as a TBLS (which I know is way over, but I've noticed oil/butter really adds up over the course of a day of cooking).

    I use a finger pump spray and have reduced my oil intake considerably! Even less than the sprayer shown. I use it for my popcorn as well. A mister would be even better and I am looking for a good one. No oils are needed for the food but the barrier between the food and the cooking surface. As for a fried experience, What is fried? Think about that.

      Most accurate I've found is to weigh the excess oil after and subtract that from your initial estimate to see how much is absorbed
      If you are air frying, weigh the food before and after applying the oil

      Use non stick Pan or use cast iron it’s possible
      2 tips for u wud be put ur oil in a sprayer so very less oil comes out in 1 spray like 2 ml
      And then use a spatula or brush to spread ur oil on the pan

      Oil has the highest caloric density of all foods. I'm not saying oil is bad but you have to be very careful adding it. I would always weigh it before adding

    So you're telling me if you use one tablespoon of olive oil which equates to 120 calories and you cook three or four pieces of fish in it.. how do you equate your calories than if you only have one piece of fish.. obviously you count the macros for the fish how do you count the macros for the oil... Bet I won't get an answer...

    Did you know, that you can actually cook with no oil at all? Just water, broth, or any other liquid works perfectly fine. And this is just the beginning! Even salad dressings can easily be done without any fat. The fat you need should come from nuts and seeds, and everything tastes so much better.

    Sprays are fucking crazy dude! I'm in disbelief, they coat my food perfectly, and even make them brown way better, only with 2 grams of oil

    This is why my parents and I have struggled with weight loss. I never realized how even a tablespoon has over 100 calories. Meanwhile, I was cutting down on everything else and torturing myself in the gym like a moron

      I recommend you get a food scale! Your comment makes it obvious that you don't have one.
      He set the Zero to the full bottle, put oil in pan, then compared the resulting value to the Zero (eg: Set 100g as 0, sprayed out to 90g, put 90g bottle on 0 so it displays -10)
