I feel that, ever since Sonic Mania's success, I felt like the ego of fans towards fangames had inflated a lot and started thinking that fangames will surpass the official games and WILL be officially published by Sega for real. Also, speaking about Mania, people still treat Mania as a fangame that was just happened to be published officially rather than an official game with the involvement of official studios, unknowingly devaluing the devs as mere small fangame studios, rather than professional ones (which they are, ever since CD HD).

This a product of the bilateral mentality that plagues the public conciense, especially in countries like USA, there are many people that can't sing their praise without degradating something they don't approve.
It gets worse when you consider imitative people and attention seeking types, since those are prone to repeat reductionist and easy to say takes, kind of like spreading memetic pollution and contaminating public perception.

    • @UltimaKeyMaster
      @UltimaKeyMaster 3 года назад +70

It's kinda funny that this happened to Sonic but not to, say, Resident Evil considering the RE2 remake brought on devs who were making their own RE4-style RE2 remake before Capcom saw them and said ".......hey if you stop working on this we'll hire you to make the real thing." And then their talent combined with RE2 being RE7's engine but third person made it one of their best titles ever much like the original game.
Capcom did it well before Sonic did, it's just nobody remembers this because RE doesn't exactly have any sort of modding community like Sonic does.
The only time this was really more so still a fan game despite official involvement I'd say was Street Fighter X Mega Man, cause I dunno what sort of polishing Capcom themselves did when it looked pretty much done already.

As a (somewhat notable?) Sonic fan-game developer and professional software engineer, I figured I'd leave my perspective:
For me, the creation of Sonic fan-games has always been a means to get across my views on the Sonic franchise in terms of its gameplay, its approach to level design, etc. What Sonic is and what Sonic should be differs from fan to fan. This is not a new notion. Plenty of video essays have been made about what elements from different parts of the franchise could be combined and refined in order to create "the ideal Sonic experience." ShayMay, TheKazeBlade, the list goes on. To me, however, a video essay just is not enough in order to demonstrate what I believe Sonic gameplay should be like. It needs something playable.
I made Sonic fangames not to get noticed and *certainly* not to make money, but to make a point.
    "Sonic can't work in 3D!"
    I made Green Hill Paradise.
"The only way to get around in a VR game is to teleport, or you'll get motion sick!"
    I made Virtua Sonic.
And for those who have their own opinions of what Sonic should be, I put together The Bumper Engine in an attempt to empower those fans with a framework to make their ideas a reality as well.
This eventually resulted in the creation of Sonic GT, which used BE as its base.
*To me, Sonic fan-games are about bettering yourself as a game designer while, at the same time, showing people that your vision for Sonic actually holds merit in a practical, playable setting and is worthy of being analyzed and discussed.*

Technically though...officials can’t. While they are just fan games built off Sega’s own assets, copyright lawsuits based off of stealing someone’s IDEA can be shaky legal ground that’s hard to navigate. Many companies discourage their creators from even looking at fanart and the like to prevent them from being accidentally influenced and potentially subject to liability.
Sonic Team can be very nice to creators of fan game makers, but they still have to be careful about not taking an idea without credit

This game definitely has that "Mario in Unreal Engine" vibe going on with a lot of flashy effects with sloppy execution. The design seems rough all around with the flaws and limitations of the boost formula on full display. And then of course the stuff going on with the creator ain't great. I think SomecallmeJohnny put it best, "Don't poke that bear." We don't know how close Sega is to start cracking down on these types of projects. Now fan games can be these cool passion projects that can be really fun to experience from the consumer's perspective but they're in a huge gray area that I wouldn't recommend anyone to make themselves due to their inherently risky nature even when you aren't directly profiting off of them. If you're going to do a project like this, make it an inspired spiritual successor like Freedom Planet or Spark.

    • @AK46supr
      @AK46supr 3 года назад +72

I dont think it shows the flaws and limitations of the boost formula, it just shows how hard it is to make 3D levels for a character like sonic. Sonic is a speedy platformer and when you forcibly take away his speed to do slow platforming it takes his core gameplay away. Making him slower like mario can work but then he'd just be mario and thats what alot of peopled had an issue with in Lost world.
They need a good blend between nice platforming like sa1 & generations with speed like sa2 & unleashed. But 3D sonic is just forever hard to do hence why they need more than 2 years to make a game. They had the same issues when making sa1 stated in an interview.
I think channel pups video of his fan game really helps stress this point

@@demetriusnp49 That just isn't true lmao. Just because you don't like the games after Unleashed doesn't mean "Sonic has been in limbo".
On another note, from what I can tell most people do Sonic fangames just because they've grown up with the character and love his gameplay and personality. It would feel off to just copy the gameplay and slap some new characters on it (basically the definition of a knockoff, actually).

Ironically, the best motion blur comes naturally when playing a game at 60+ FPS, with the actual motion blur effect completely turned off. I was told by multiple professors that the human eye can’t process anything more than 24 FPS, which I seriously doubt, but I can definitely see that the motion blur my eye perceives at extremely high frame rates is much more natural and appealing than the motion blur processing effect in Unreal Engine. Personally, I think even playing 30 FPS games with motion blur turned off produces a more appealing blur than the post-processing effect. The console versions of Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order demonstrate this quite well.

The praise for the original bothered me all the time, because the game looks prettier than it does to play - and fangames of all series seem to love this "graphics over quality" mindset. Just because it had "good lighting," unique cutscenes, and original voice over, albeit questionable voice over, doesn't make it the best thing in Sonic in 10 years. Also, aside from this game, the "good lighting" in all these games looks absolutely terrible. Darks are too darks, lights are too light, bloom is overwhelming. Lighting doesn't equal good, especially when it's just intense for intensity's sake.
And then Omens starts doing the rounds, and I see people saying the guy has a patreon, and I'm like... "Wait... That's illegal!"
The whole reason Sega let us away with these games is based on that one simple principle - don't monetize the game. Aaron Webber himself said it on a livestream on the official Sonic channel once, I'm pretty sure - it's SUCH a simple ask. We've been directly told not to do this and we can keep making games. Patreon absolutely goes against that, and I'd go as far as to say that even making one and saying it's for "other projects" is still sort-of dodgy, as people might support a person solely because of the Sonic content they made, even if they aren't constantly updating it or promoting it.

If the community wants these fan games to be actual messages to SEGA on what we like and need we can't keep cutting them so much slack and ending every criticism with "but for a fangame it's good". We need to be harsh, we need to be stern, and we need to treat this as if we were consumers deciding the face of the Sonic we want portrayed.
You can't have your cake and eat it too, you can't say your fangame is a big project trying to make an impact and then when it comes to the community you make sure no one treats you as anything other than a humble fangame designer.

The double standards the sonic fandom shows at times between fan games and official games is baffling. In an official game, every possible mistake or flaw or pitfall, no matter its size, is another excuse to tear into Sonic Team and mock them for their choices, yet when a fan-game falls into those same pitfalls, the game and its developers are immediately coddled by mountains of excuses and damage control. "They're a new team, not everything is gonna be perfect on their first try!" "It's still in its early stages, of course its gonna be rough! Things will get better eventually!"
If this were Sonic Team making that same 'Omens' game, or something similar but slightly more polished, these same people would brush the game off as trash based on nothing but two minutes of gameplay they see on youtube.
I am tired of the "Hire this man!" mentality that plagues every video showcasing the latest mediocre fan game of the week. If these projects that supposedly showcase what Sonic could be capable of aren't held to the same criteria and scrutiny as the SEGA-published stuff, then the Sonic Team critics and fans of unofficial stuff are no better than the "blind Sega fanboys" they so often mock for the same attitude they're displaying towards fan content.

But that only should be done after one has build enough a reputation through their own projects or build enough of a fanbase.
The issue, like you stated, is that studios like Oroboros, Arc Forged & other inde devs want to skip all that by making ONE good fangame, make it really popular and then profit off that social media clout for a while. Absolutely agree. I love a lot of aspects of Sonic Omens, and I love the physics of Sonic Project Hero, but praising these games and ignoring all their flaws is harmful and irritating. Sonic Omens has some amazing level ideas, and some abysmal ones.
They certainly understand the tone and direction the collective fans seem to want, but lack a lot of experience in game design and accessibility. (Not saying everyone want direction like this, but it’s apparent that enough people do).
They’re commendable fan projects, with a lot of hard work and skill in many areas. But they are not commercial polished games, and they shouldn’t be treated as such. Praising them so much creates false expectations, that sets up Sonic Team for failure regardless of what they make.

Yeah, there's quite a bit of double standards when it comes to fan games too. People claim they're getting sick of Green Hill Zone, but that's in at least half of them. People claim they're sick of the Egg Dragoon, but here it is, front and center. I don't even know why the Enerbeam or Forces OCs came back.

And that's all, 4k graphics, lots of motion blur and bloom doesn't make up for sloppy game design. Controls that doesn't even feel right to play, levels with awful design, the same 4k quality that's the main thing you see tends to mess you up while playing, etc. And that goes without saying Bolt making profit out of a fangame. Copyright laws are a thing y'know.
People are mindlessly praising this game as "eVeN bEttEr tHan SeGa's wOrk" without even knowing an inch of it. And to be honest, this doesn't even compete with official releases such as Lost World and would even date to say Forces or Colors.

Just going to go on record here and say that Sega treats their fanbase MUCH BETTER than Nintendo ever will.
Fanmade videos on RUclips? Copyright claim or strike.
    Fanmade game? Full-on DMCA.
Anything else fanmade? Any combination of the two.
As opposed to Sega, who doesn't do any of that, and even sees the potential in their fanbase and what they can do, and isn't afraid to let them take the reigns of the series from time to time. After all, Taxman and Stealth were once fan creators just like the rest of us, then they got handed the job of making a new Sonic game, and we all know what came of that: SONIC MANIA, a major contender for best game in the series.
So whether the fanbase ends up helping or hurting itself with it's own creations, you gotta give Sega some credit for not being a bunch of copyright nazi's like Nintendo usually is, and allowing their fanbase to spread their creative wings and show what they can do. Sega truly does what Nintendon't.

This may be a bad take, but I think partial blame should go to the lionization of Evening Star after the success of Sonic Mania and how they where actively marketed as "fan devs" as opposed to "small indie studio made of lifelong fans". It reduces the hard work, incremental training, constant networking & non-Sonic commercial work to just "if you make good Sonic game, you will get noticed".
This delusion has emboldened frustrated younger fans to create a narrative where the fandom knows more than SEGA. That the fandom should be HIRED by SEGA. Where only the fandom can "SAVE" Sonic from the "evil" clutches of SEGA. So suddenly, being mad about Sonic games make you justified in doing shady shit.
Now we're seeing this form of "cult of personality" where Sonictubers, 2000's era kids & angry Sonicnerds are willing to cross into very shady territory (some ignorant; others on purpose), in order to quench their long thirst for an Adventure-style Sonic game...at any cost.
It doesn't matter what the legal consequences or retaliations that will happen through these actions - it's disturbing how these people would rather pay for bootleg Sonic games and risk the safety of the fan community, just cuz they mad at SEGA they never got Sonic Adventure 3 or Sonic Unleashed 2.
