    Interesting fact: In 2005, Mark Sirangelo came to Russia and talked with engineers who worked on a similar project during the Soviet era. These projects were called "BOR-4" and "Spiral". Dream chaser is almost a copy of BOR-4.

      Sorry to disappoint you, but it is based on Boeing X20 Dyna-Soar, actually Russians stole and copied the tech & the design, Soviet Mig-105 and BOR-4 were in 60s and 80s respectively while United States Air Force was working on X-20 Dyna-Soar in 50s.

    I've heard that since Boeing merged with McDonnel Douglas in the late 90's, the standard of engineering nosedived on their planes because the execs put too much time pressure on the engineers. Apparently it was a huge culture change for Boeing empIoyees. I wouldn't be in the least surprised if the same mentality has happened here - a push to get it done quickly instead of doing it right, errors are made, and the whole thing ends up taking longer than if it'd been done more slowly and carefully in the first place.

      Pencil sharpeners surely are needed, but not at the top where they scream to pull the plug when the first mistake happens and when a single penny too much has been spent, reducing profits, the only metric that matters until bankruptcy.
      Missing failure culture probably is another reason?

    If it launches on top of the Vulcan rocket it will no way be price competitive with falcon 9/Dragon. The only way it works is with government contracts. Plus Falcon 9/Dragon already has a safety record. I think the only way it would have been competitive is if it could bring back its second stage engine and solar panels.

      There's always the argument of certain spacecraft never being "needed". But Dream Chaser offers a lot of options that other spacecraft don't. Its ability to land on any runway in the world is TERRIFIC for down-mass from orbit, and in the future it is also planned to become human-rated as well, allowing even further redundancy for sending people to the ISS. But the most important thing it can offer: Further options to get stuff into space. There's a lot that goes into making those kinds of decisions, and Dream Chaser can definitely provide an offering that others cannot.

    Interesting concept but if and when starship flies, it will essentially be obsolete. Starship will carry 150 tons into orbit. That's the equivalent of approximately 7 40 ft trailers worth of mass. The only thing left for this thing would to be a passenger on starship for possibly crew return or something. Even the dragon spacecraft becomes possibly highly commercial with reusable falcon. 9, at least for unmanned applications. Somehow though, I get a feeling in my gut for the space plane is still a good thing to have and the cheaper the boosters are the more relevant it becomes.

Just ask SpaceX how much difference certifying a vehicle for crew is than the process for certifying their Cargo Dragon 1. You amnesiacs are forgetting how much you were complaining about how long NASA was taking to certify Dragon 2 for crew, and you all seem to forget about the parachute problems and the explosion during testing for the Crew Abort test. And it seems like it was a good thing that SpaceX chose to do the dynamic flight abort test, since having a Super Draco explosion with a crew inside on the launch pad would not have been a good look.

    I don't compliment SpaceX very often, but they are more successful than Boeing in this case due to the vertical integration. Anyone who has worked with huge supply-chains knows it's basically a game of broken telephone on steroids. So much back and forward over trivial stuff... Emails, lead times, logistics, double inspections (supplier and client), etc.

    Wiring fire hazard, what the heck are they doing ,kind of hard to miss that one, being as wiring is usually coated in plastics, and will need to be decorated w fireproof material

    The shuttle could never land automatically. I believe the landing gear had to be lowered manually for one and I understand there was resistance from Astronauts to having a fully automated landing system on board (e.g. like the Soviet Buran). I've heard it said the engineers referred to the landing gear switch as the 'astronauts job protection switch'.

    This simply means Boeing took 4.2b only to buy and use cheap materials for starliner? What a crime shame!

  • @wingsabre
    @wingsabre Год назад

    I don’t understand why Boeing only has two active Starliner. Wouldn’t it make more sense to build multiple versions. They could then test more frequently like how SpaceX operates. They could then retire the existing vehicle, or do other test on the body while they focus on building another starliner with the correct adhesive tape. Starliner will eventually need to have a sustained production line once a more final version is set as it can’t be reused indefinitely. It’s only meant to be used 10 times before retirement.

    A lot of current design are dated back to 60 years ago , and for much larger activities on the moon or space , eventually new design will be needed.
    If spacecraft can harvest magnetic field energy from earth ,maybe this is better choice, but that will also involve the development of new material that can sustain magnetic energy even after atmosphere burn, so maybe can look at the meteorite that fall on earth,but suitable examples are rare,hmm.
