Finally!! This is the only video of this song on youtube where it is being performed at the correct indicated pace. Every other choir makes this incredible arrangement sound like a funeral procession.

I did not know it was written to be performed at this quick pace. In fact when this began I was so disappointed. But after reading your comment I had to admit that it is more joyful this way.

I don't know that it should be THIS quick; I agree that taking it too slowly is also mistake.

I love the joy and vivacity which comes across in this, so full of life and the glory of God. The music, words and musicianship, married with the glory of God's workmanship in His universe, overflows with praise. Wonderful.

Great Performance! But the cameraperson made this into an architectural design show. We never saw the soloists as the camera was on the ceiling or on some artifact. It totally distracted from the performance.

Study this text, especially the ancient concept of The Firmament. These are very sensible camera choices for this particular movement.

the 19th c. took these popular choral works, made them mammoth ensemble pieces, slowed them down to "respectable" religious tempi and milked them for all the melodrama sentiment they could get. So good to hear this crisp and at a decent tempo

DEAD ROOM?! I have no doubt they choose this room BECAUSE of its' awesome acoustics - certainly NOT dead and not too lively. A perfect environment for a great recording. PERFECT TEMPO - lively and reflecting the lyric content of declaration and rejoicing. Don't really care about the video shooting, just the awesome audio.
Thank you, Christopher Hogwood! I want to use it for my fireworks show audio track next year!

I just found this whole Oratorio here: ruclips.net/video/bH5KM700AlQ/видео.html . I suppose since they show the soloist a lot befor and after this chorus with soli, the director decided to show more of the church...

Nice to hear this in English for a change. I had the pleasure of singing this in High School (the whole thing) with a hired orchestra. We did it in the English translation, which is very good. Later I played this (as a cellist in the orchestra) with a college and they did the German... personal preference, but the English is better IMHO.

    • @elaineblackhurst1509
      @elaineblackhurst1509 3 года назад +1

Haydn intended the oratorio as a dual language work, it was first published with both German and English words - both are equally authentic and valid.
That said, some of Baron van Swieten’s translations back into English from his German translation of the English original are somewhat unusual!

@@elaineblackhurst1509 Thanks, I didn't know that. Interesting. Would've expected that with Handel but not with Haydn. I really love this piece. Love to find an English version recording of the whole thing. I'd also love to play it again... the cello part is difficult enough to be interesting but easy enough to be lots of fun.

I know that many of you would disagree (I certainly respect that), however in my humble taste/opinion, this piece looses a significant amount of its emotional element at this tempo. Still a beautiful performance and I will give it the "thumbs up." God bless.

You're absolutely right. . .their tempo is preposterous. . . .bluegrass speed!!!! Maybe the Conductor really had to pee or something. Why are there no shots of the Trio/Soloists?

Ken1Lutheran Ha! Me too (on the accusation of the moving too fast thing). I think however that I have gotten better in this regard over the years, largely due to the desire of avoiding what I perceive to be problematic with this performance.

aragornthebrave ...but the standard of Anglican cathedral choral music remains one of the absolute pinnacles of western music; there is very little anywhere across Europe of a comparable standard.

    • @elaineblackhurst1509

      Michael Osullivan
Haydn always intended that the original words should be English or German and that is how it was first published; English is therefore a legitimate language to use for this oratorio.
Your comments could perhaps be applied to other languages though, but the work was published in various languages across Europe very quickly as it was intended to be heard in the vernacular so that it could be properly understood.
I should also be pointed out that the famous performance conducted by Salieri in Vienna in 1808, was sung in Italian.
This performance was Haydn’s last public appearance and Beethoven attended too - he was for him, extremely gracious to Haydn on this occasion.
The work therefore has always crossed international language barriers though in one respect I think you are right, when actually composing the oratorio, whilst being aware of the need to fit the music to English too, it was primarily conceived in German.
