absolutely incredible. I have listened to Handel's Messiah many times. I have known of this work and even sung parts of it, but somehow i missed the splendor of the whole thing. The duets "By Thee" at 1:20:52 and all the way down through 1:40:12 move me as much, if not more than anything by Bach, Handel, Mozart, Vivaldi, Pergolisi, etc. This may be greater than "Messiah". How is it not so well known? Possibly because it is usually not in English.
Great words Dave ! Not so sure about it being not so well known, however, as it is widely considered as being one of the greatest choral masterpieces of all time. Outside of the UK and the USA Die Shopfung is probably better known than Messiah. Both are glorious works by sincere men of faith and stand the test of time both musically and in terms of worship and belief. Add Missa Solemnis and you have IMHO a musical Holy Trinity.
@@Francois-en3vu I think the most important thing is that Haydn always intended that The Creation be understood by people in their own language. We know that the original publication of the oratorio was a dual language edition in German and English; translations appeared very soon after in other obvious languages like French, and less obvious ones like Swedish. The famous performance in Vienna of 1808 conducted by Salieri, and attended by both Haydn and Beethoven* was actually in Italian. * This is the performance depicted by Balthazar Wigand in the well-known painting that appears on almost every cd cover and/or booklet.
This is absolutely wonderful and has all the freshness and spontaneity lacking in almost every commercial recording, even those with HIP forces. Wonderful lithe and lively articulation from the great choristers and players which manages to penetrate the cavernous acoustic. I'd have loved to have this on CD with a drier acoustic. Solo work is efortless and impressive and Ida Falk Winland is a find. Thank you for this great and joyful upload.
Given the difficult Cathedral acoustic here, this is surprisingly brilliant! Sung in the original, John Milton"s "Paradise Lost"' english. Everything has fallen into place here. All around excellence.
Did anyone else notice that the soprano soloist changed her dress between the second and third parts? Black to a shade of purple. Great to hear this classic in English. Sang it in my college choir days. Thanks. Rev. Dr. James Dean McNamara (Pastor Dean), Christian Life Church, Kissimmee FL USA.
To consider that this work came from the mind of one man is monumental enough - never mind that Haydn wrote hundreds of other songs, hymns, incidental music, concerti, chamber pieces, other oratorios, masses, and symphonies. Haydn is a *god.*
i have searched youtube and listened to many versions of this by many great performers. The one thing that makes this one so uniquely superior is the connections between the soloist, orchestra, and conductor. They seem to be living the parts. Their eye contact .... They sing from the heart... Not from their training and abilities. And their training and abilities are superb.
this brings memories of my 2nd year in my University Choir when we did this rendition....and then a year later added Handel's Israel in Egypt..... "Most beautiful pair appear,,, and in native worth and honour" my two favourites
If you like this English translation, Robert Shaw has an English translation of this that absolutely is a treasure to hear. The wording of it in fact works the best of any English translation I've heard to Haydn's wonderful piece.
This performance isn't an English translation: if you translate the German in the credits, you'll discover that this is the "English text version of the original edition of 1803". A friend of Haydn's translated the original English text into German before Haydn commenced composition. Haydn then composed the oratorio simultaneously in English & German, and it was published that way in 1803. His own preference was that the work be performed in English, as he had originally conceived of it in that language. In short, the libretto wasn't written is German and translated to English, but the opposite: written in English and translated to German. Whatever Shaw did was a reworking or rewriting of what Haydn chose to set.
I like the Shaw/Parker version mostly, but there are a couple of places that are just trying too hard to be original and could have been left as was. The perfect translation would be a mix of both.
Magnificently, Gloriously Performance. Franz Joseph Haydn is tremendously watching with satisfaction from above on one of his great Masterpiece Oratorio.
As a whole I much prefere the old 1969 version of Karajan with Janowitz, Wunderlicht (Fisher Dieskau) and Berry but this is in any case a splendid voice!.
Wonderful work. We performed this last Sunday. Manchester Beethoven Orchestra with the Oldham Choral Society. Great experience. That opening prelude... takes you on a journey to the edge of the Universe and the chaos therein... using harmonies which Mahler and Schoenberg would have been proud to own..... BRILLIANT.
An excellent and outstanding performance from a well balanced choir and orchestra including the magnificent soloists. Well done, I really enjoyed it. ...👍👍👍👍
