The lightsaber from Star Wars is arguably the most famous weapon in the history of cinema.
Go back in time to 1977 and learn how the lightsaber was first captured with the help of the highly reflective material "Scotchlite" & a compact motor at the hilt.
If you want to try this out yourself, "Scotchlite" tape rolls can be found at local hardware store for around $10.
I also went in search of a Graflex flashgun handle and was lucky enough to find one but it was one from the 60s and not the sleek silver version that Luke uses in Episode IV & V.
Enjoy guys, and I'm not seeing Star Wars till Sunday morning, so it's going be tough reading comments till then.
The opening of this episode is a little scene I've always wanted in a Star Wars movie... acquiring a Kyber crystal and constructing a lightsaber.
I know there is that deleted scene from Return of the Jedi of Luke adjusting his lightsaber settings, but I want a little more in depth account.

I like how this is a tutorial on how to make a lightsaber, but i LOVE how it feels like a film with a backstory, history, nostalgia and a sweet ending! Amazing work as always! :D
+Stupchek Haha, thanks man, yeah I try and shoot some narrative elements when I can, but it can really slow down the production but it worked out in this case.
Beautifully done. I love watching these little slices of history made new in your videos.
Beautiful. And a great piece of cinema history there!
Very well done!
+Filmmaker IQ Thanks John, glad u enjoyed and thanks for sharing on filmmakerIQ.com
love the music here, it goes so well with the nostalgic feeling star wars gives.
Love to see how all these were done before CGI was invented. Thanks for the videos!
The baby with the lightsaber got me😂
well done master
This is 100% the best lightsaber practical fix video ever!
Am I late to the party? Last comment is 4 years ago...What am I saying I can never be late to a Star Wars video, they will NEVER be outdated. VERY well done video I had no idea of how this was done back than. It has such a great nostalgic backstory to it too. This video easily gets a LIKE.
Man, you’re one of the most gifted, talented youtubers ever! Your videos are so creative with skillful editing and clear cut explanations! Congratulations!
Thanks for the kind words David. Glad u enjoy what we create !!!
Shanks FX Did you already make a video about how to reproduce Darth Vader’s breathing.
I haven't but that is a good idea !!!
You are competition for best Dad ever with Grant Thompson -that's a massive compliment.
+kurt lindner Most definetly a compliment, thanks!!!
Beautifully done video. Learning about these kind of effects make you appreciate them all that much more.
Great tutorial! My question is, how did you secure the blade into the hilt? I made mine from plumbing sink parts.
Wow, fantastic video as always. Music matched the editing perfect, thanks Joey!
+Maxwell Inc. Studios Thanks, originally had the Jedi theme set as the musical track but didn't want to get flagged.
you can do the extending effect by pointing the saber directly at the camera and steadily move it to the side
Hey, Shanks FX. I want to start out by saying that I'm a huge fan of your work. This video is by far my favourite. It actually inspired me to make my own Lightsaber a couple of years ago for a college project. I just wanted to say thank you for giving me that inspiration and for conveying George Lucas' original vision. I hope to see more of your work in the future. May the Force be with you.
Thanks Daldi and also with you. Yeah, I still got my lightsaber on my mantle and prob give it a look everyday.
@@ShanksFX1 it is pretty awesome. I also enjoy your Creating the Cosmos series of videos. I think I'll give some of those methods a shot for a few videos I want to make. You know, give them a real looking edge to them. That Star Trek warp effect with the fan and the LEDs certainly gave me an idea regarding Doctor Who.
the force is with you!
good work shanks
looks like Corridor crew used this video as part of their research lmao
Loved the video!
Thanks for all your hard work good sir!
Thank you for making this! I now understand perfectly how the entire process worked, the actual featurette left me more confused and unable to understand fully what they meant. Bonus for also explaining about how the original method was done away with with the later films, I noticed how the blades never had as much of that "pulsing" effect in the later films as they did in the first, now I understand why. I always thought it was a cool extra detail that was unique in the first film.
On the subject, think you could make videos on the later methods for the effect? If you've already done that, care to forward me the links? Thanks.
Damn they really did live in the stone age then a days it was so simple

video was awesome and the soundtrack was amazing!
I love Corridor, but this video is genuinely more well-made and informative compared to the video they did on the same subject. Take my sub.
I love the way the original practical lightsaber looked, I wish they kept it that way
Congratulations! Well made! Awesome job!
you sir just solved my entire question for existence.
thank you sir.
Extremely cool
Beautiful video, very very well done.
An enjoyable and excellent video, well done!
Just wonderful video! Made with love indeed
Bro your video is great!! well edited, good music, and rythm im not a huge fan of starwars but i enjoyeed your video a lot. saludos de mexico!
great music and video
May I ask what type of camera you used to shoot this? I'm currently attending film school & loved the look of all of your footage. I'm currently in the market for a higher end personal camera that I will be able to record great footage with but it still be easily to take with me on the go. Any advice would greatly be appreciated! Thank you and I love your work!
+John Kyle (yipjumpmusic) I've been shooting a lot with the Sony FS7 as of late but most of most of this video was actually shot with the Canon 6D. The Sony FS7 is awesome but it sure it nice to have a smaller camera that I can maneuver around with ease. I'd focus on getting a 3 good lenses. A Wide Angle, Macro Lens, and a fast 50mm that can shoot really well in low-light settings.
I'd love to have a Sony A7S (1 or the 2) as a B-camera to my Sony FS7.
Does this visibly shine without editing? Like would it glow if I were to shine a flashlight at it? it sounds a bit stupid but I was wondering.
It would shine without editing but u have to be in a dark place
i find if you wrap the reflective tape rod in colored transparent plastic,it will make the color glow on the in camera effect
Awesome video Wonderful
your videos are amazing, great insight + coolest video + coolest Music = Many likes and a subscriber all the way from India :D
Amazing job!
Thanks for the info. Now, how were the laser bolts produced?? :)
+Colaris Well, in episode 4 they used real guns with blank cartridges as an on set effect, and then went over it with the red color for the blaster bolt
this episode ruled
Meanwhile my phone camera has no problem making my neopixel look like a real lightsaber even though my eyes just see a giant glowstick. This is super cool!
You are a King !!!
Classic the old Star wars rotating pull
you are a master!
This was done way better than those Sfx RUclipsrs. Theirs was spinning and looked not as good
this was incredible, thanks
Great video
Keep up the good work man 😃😃😃😃
How exactly did you apply the motor to the hilt? Great video btw!
Pretty damn cool, dude!
What in the world is the first song in this video ? Sounds incredible!
If you really want the original, there are people that make and sell replica graflex flashguns. Pretty good ones and fairly cheap too (around 200 dollars). Check out The Custom Saber Shop, they have a full graflex saber kit and lots of other saber parts. The stunt sabers made today, you practically don't even need special effects for it.
The first song is Big Fok - Prism (Instrumental)
My hero. My nigga
awesome! did you guys use a DSLR camera? and the same light for all shots ?
I've always preffered that moonlight blue color from the original and phantom menace, now it looks more like a cyan color or deep blue.
awesome
Thanks for share this awesome info ;)
Can u use different color scotchlite for a different color blade or would it have to be a different color light?
Now I can make one without editing it for Real just a flashlight and a Transparent Tube lol
where is that store of antiques ??
POSSIBLE SPOILERS ahead - PROCEED with CAUTION
I'm back on the gird after now have watched Episode 7. Tons of fun & didn't realize that the original lightsaber from "A New Hope" would have as much screen time as it did.
I wonder how that Luke's original lightsaber made it into that box. ????
And I'm guessing Luke still has his lightsaber from Return of the Jedi ????
Could Rey possible be offspring of Ben Kenobi ? I think Luke as dad would be too obvious. (I like the idea of a person with "the Force" who doesn't need to have it running in the family, then we are dealing in the "metaclorine" realm)
Also could Supreme Leader Snoke be related to Yoda ? Maybe Kylo Ren goes to Dagobah to finish darkside training. And hopefully Luke trains Rey and makes her harvest her own crystal !!!
Just some thoughts & ideas.
+Shanks FX I'm wondering about possibility Rey isn't related to any 'main' characters...more somebody (empath? would that be the word?) who can 'learn' from other people's thoughts...thus explaining ability to quickly gain knowledge? Not sure about the Snoke/Yoda theory. Also - wondering about Ren possibly seeking out Luke for training (and/or destroying?) - setting up Ren/Rey finale eventually?
+Shanks FX BTW: forgot to mention...but great video...love the background information...
+Shanks FX Didn't Luke throw his lightsaber at Palpatine after he sliced off Vader's hand, and the death star exploded without a scene actually with Luke getting his lightsaber back ^w^

Smoke is the force ghost of the emperor
Little did you notice that the flash handle you used for this video was a good flash tube for making the Holiday Special Saber..........
5:13 Baby Jedi
A younglin
the fact that the lightsaber was always just a flashgun is kinda hilarious
Cool man
So this is awesome, now I need to know how they made Vader’s lightsaber red
They added the red glow in post
(edit corridor digital made a pretty good video on it
They coloured it in frame by frame
Thank you!
do you have to use the material or can you just wrap the whole thing in reflective tape
What did you use to make that motor thing that makes the blade pulse?
what kind of light in lumens and lenses would you recommend for night or darker scenes? I own a canon 60d and 70d.
Cheers!
How do you get the blade so bright? I purchased some scotchlite off amazon and it's either a different type of scotchlite (maybe less strong), or your lighting is very powerful. I tried floodlights and other lighting and what seems to work best so far is iPhone flash which I know is not the best to use. I use a canon T3i and it doesn't seem to capture the glow that I saw in your video around 3:30
3:18
You have not shown the light directly out of the camera lens or as close as possible to the side of it that's why it works so well the iPhone
can you do this effect without a motor and just a blade with scotchlite?
what is the saber part made of and how does the light from the graflex flashgun come through the cap holding the saber?
+JB Hilferty The rode I used was just the end of an old discarded light stand. I stuck a flashlight inside the hollow core for some shots to make some of the buttons and hole shine with illumination.
Cool :)
your kid has the force! @5:14
what do you use to wrap the reflex tive stuff around?
Is there somewhere to buy the Music from your video? (Excellent also, but i'd love to have the music). Great job on this.
The song is "One For James" by "Paul Dateh"
You can find it on iTunes 🎼
+Iwona Bernad Thank you! I'll be downloading that one right away.
+Kraeg Minett Sorry for the late reply, I was staying off the internet till I saw the film. I'm now back on the grid.
+Shanks FX All good. Found the name of the music and was able to find it on Spotify. I will likely buy it as well to show support. Great video, great music. Thank you.
I love how you replied and still didn't answer, no one has yet to mention the name of the song by big fok in the intro.
What did you put on top of the handle
amazing videos on your channel sir...u need to make an indie
i'd love to get the actual name of the music track you used, I fell in love with it, it made me want to rewatch the video even more !
+Jogau nevermind, found it ! If you guys are interested the track is named : One for James by Paul Dateh it's on his soundcloud and available on itunes
+Jogau Yes indeed it is, love Paul Dateh, very talented guy.
whats the material for the rod/blade portion for the saber?
scotchlight
dsmoot09 Probably some kind of wooden dowel
cool
i didnt notice beam splitters being mentioned
where did you get the footage at 4:18?
Is this affect visible in real life to the naked eye?
John Morgan yes
The Baby HAs The Power Of The Force
Does it have to spin?
Naw, it doesn't have to spin.
@@ShanksFX1 TY
I want one
what do you use for the blade??
Dowel
A big wood stick, no really
One of the best parts was you harvesting your lightsaber crystal
+mateus felipe Haha, thanks, I've always wanted to see a scene like that in a Star Wars movie. Maybe it will be in Episode 8 !!!
+Shanks FX Technically there's an episode of the Clone Wars cartoon (the new one) involving a group of padawan candidates doing just that, as well as building their sabers.
interesting, I always just assumed they were totally done with rotoscoping.
They technically were after the first film, for the reasons explained in the video itself.
what is this song?
That's the same Flashgun that they used for Vader's saber!
Well I just figured out where my dad got the idea to dress us all up in those stupid ass baby blue turtleneck sweaters for our family portrait, circa 1979.
watching this in 2022
5:05 no Anakin don't even think it
These days you can get even better results by using colored High-Intensity retro-reflective tape. You don't even have to add the color with effects afterwards.

Here it is in action as a lightsaber blade: ruclips.net/video/iDlUu3mnKZ4/видео.html
the sountrack kinda ruins this vid
awesome vid btw
