+Michael Townley It is if you're not American. You might be interested to know that liter, meter, scepter, sepulcher are also wrong, and should properly be spelled "litre, metre, sceptre, and sepulchre".
watching Obi-Wan and Darth Vader fight with no James Earl Jones or sound effects around 3 minutes and 20 seconds in looks like two nerds in a basement pretending to play Star Wars
Behind the scenes footage of Episode IV makes it easy to understand why many of the actors as well as the Fox executives were rather skeptical of the project during its production. It all looks so silly without the layers post production magic added. Supposedly only Alec Guinness thought it would be a success, hence why he took the job despite really disliking the Sci-Fi genre.
+Jo$h What he created 40 years ago?!?!?!?!?!?!? I wish he'd let people watch it again without all of having to jump through hoops to see THAT film! The version that WON the Academy Awards, not the bolloxed versions available after 1997! What's available on Blu ray is NOT the original Star Wars... I'm sorry. Lucas has become a very cynical old man who spit in the face of the Library of Congress when they asked for an archival print of the ORIGINAL Star Wars. He was so stubborn that he would only give them a copy of the 1997 Special Edition. Legally, they could NOT accept that film because Film Preservation was VERY specific -- they could only accept an original, unaltered theatrical print (1977) of the film. He wouldn't do it. What's to respect there? After 1989, I don't think LucasFilm HAS made a film that's been particularly good -- ESPECIALLY the Prequels were mediocre. That's why more people were happy that Disney took Star Wars off his hands than really upset at the Mouse!
+AvengerII Why don't you make 2 trilogies that are probably the most popular movies in the world with great actors and story lines that make sense. Yeah I don't think you can do that.
+Jo$h If he is gonna "do whatever he wants with his movies" then he will also have to accept that millions of fans from the 70s will be annoyed by that. To them, Star Wars is the movies that they saw at the theatres back then, not the "Special Editions" or whatever that Lucas shat out several decades later. This is like changing the dinosaurs in Jurassic Park into "updated 21st century standard CGI computer graphics" that looks way different than it did in the original movie and then insist that that's the "real, final version". Almost every fan of that movie will hate that change.
rasmasyean I hear Star Wars' sound effects and think "Wow, what a horrible dated sound." So it's ironic you say that. To me the sound effects in this franchise have always been clichés. Low quality poor 1950's style things you'd expect if you looked up 'royalty free scifi sfx sounds' on the web.
One Man Band All the sound effects, from blasters to the whine of the tie fighters flying past, are perfect. Even the Oscars were forced to give them an award for sound editing, despite the fact that Star Wars was very mainstream and popular, which is the sort of movie the Academy hates.
Ya when they played the SFX-less version of the fight, its easy to see how some other sounds could have made these movies much less successful. Crazy it took so many people to do things just right to make these movies seemingly perfect.
Never realized that Luke hits the rails twice and then doesn't cut the bars but then when he slashes through Vader's hand, the rail behind it is precut. Great editing
i love lukes fighting style compared to the original jedi. his is so raw and unrefined like a street brawler while the jedi are flippy and elegant. really nice little detail imo
It felt more realistic The prequels look fancy but i doubt a real fight would be that choreographed. The OT shows hesitation and care that happen in real fights
@@delgande well I think the prequel is more like the medieval period. From what I remember, someone mention about it is accurate to how medieval techniques was used.
@@delgande well the thing is force users have whats called precognition, so both people in the fight can sense the move the other is going to make before they make it, its why the fights seem like they have been done a million times, they attempt to counter what the force tells them their opponent will do, but the force tells their opponent about the counter and back and fourth until someone's reaction time is too slow or they get too arrogant
You watch any behind the scenes of episodes 1-6 and you see how much of a labor of love it was for the entire crew, and why these are the greatest films of our time
@@benh715, there wasn't as much CGI as you think (there were plenty of traditional effects too) and they were innovative and cannot be considered a negative point. There was a lot more CGI in the disastrous Disney movies, which claim to want to go back to what was done in the days of the original trilogy. But more than anything else, the Star Was saga is above all 6 brilliant movies (episodes 1 to 6) that form a coherent, emblematic story.
@@Gemmavanderlinden The cringe is strong with 99.99% of the people in this very comment section. That's like 100% cringe per every *midi-chlorian* in their bloodstream!
what's with Obi-Wan being cut in half scene? that's not how it ended up in the film, he just disappears. that was gruesome and strange at the same time (upper body hung on for a while in the air)
The whole "heavy" lightsaber premise is contradicted by it's very first appearance, where Obi Wan holds it lightly and Luke takes it one handed and waves it around with no effort.
I don't think they mean it's heavy to hold but rather heavy when clashed against each other and the two energy beams collide. Particularly because in most of the books I've read they describe the light saber as dangerously light in weight. So much so that if you weren't trained in its use then you would likely chop one of your own limbs off
+andrew strongman They weigh nothing at all, like literally nothing, but have crazy gyroscopic forces to contain the plasma beam meaning you need additional strength from the force to wield one.
+andrew strongman it would make sense that the sword have weight since all that blade is energy ..it is matter ...looks like a controled plasma ..or a condensed plasma ...from a lightning
+andrew strongman Just think of the original Trilogy as the bible - old testament, new testament, and book of Mormon. Everything is gospel and if you find any contradiction then everything is gospel!
I like both Prequels and the Original Star Wars. I grew up with the prequels as a kid so they always have a place in my heart. I didn't watch the prequels just for their lightsaber fights, there were some actors I really enjoyed watching such as Ewan McGregor, Samuel Jackson, Ian McDiarmid and Christopher Lee. in my opinion They are the one's that hold the prequels together
Sith Acolyte true to that! Most of the haters are simply people who grew up with the original trilogy, so they didn't like the changes and just dismissed the whole prequel trilogy. Which is sad because the more Star Wars, the better :p
Well the movies do have their flaws. like Anakin and Padme romantic chemistry I really didn't like and they could have done better. Liam Neeson was awesome as Qui Gon Jinn but I think they killed him off too early in my opinion. other than that the movies are great
noci2830 I grew up watching the original trilogy on VHS and personally the prequels aren't that bad, a lot of people though feel they didn't live up to the legacy, something that was impossible from the start. As for the Special Editions I could care less about the visual effects or who shot first as long as the story is intact
The sound of Luke's green sabre is my absolute favourite lightsabre sound. The real snap as it ignites is great. Also seeing how genuine these sets were is incredible, awesome to see.
Flame Beats I just mean it's funny that the Jedi are all but forgotten in that time frame. And now Star Wars Rebels happened two or three years before Ep. 4
le Hoarderz Al-Shekelsteins See, that makes sense. I can believe the emperor wiped the Jedi from history records but it would take more than a generation for them to become myth. But seeing how they were myths at the time of their existence, I get it
Yeah, in the prequels, we only ever see what the top echelon of society thinks of the Jedi - the Senate, other rich dignitaries, nobility, royalty, etc. all know that the Jedi are real, as do many of the people that live in the core worlds like Coruscant and Alderaan and even mid-rim worlds like Naboo. The galaxy, however, is far more vast than what we see, and planets like Tatooine are abundant where the Jedi, and to an extent even the Republic, is but a myth or a legend of the far off core/mid-rim territories of the galaxy.
Trev Kay the only people who had experienced the Jedi first hand were those living in the planets that were front line in the War, meaning that they were all gone after order 66 as Palpatine pretty much destroyed every last remain of the separatist, as this was his plan to get in charge of everything, use them as a escape goat. So yeah, do you know what kind of people were in Iraq for example? do you experienced what happened in their daily lives? communication is way easier to be supressed when there are light years separating you from the place you want to know about, way more than an ocean
+TJP77 If you read the Cracked.com article, it was actually someone else that was leading the team in directing Star Wars, while lucas was preoccupied trying to convince the studio he was sane.
+TJP77 Actually, Irvin Kershner was the director of Episodes V and VI. Back when George Lucas was enrolled in USC Film School, Kershner happened to be teaching classes. Several years later, after Episode IV turned out to be a success, Lucas decided to take a break from directing and appointed Kershner to fill in. So, I guess we have to give credit to Lucas for starting the Star Wars franchise, but for Episodes V and VI, Irvin Kershner deserves all the praise.
+Jay19Serna Yeah, and it goes beyond that. When you listen to him talk about the original films, it's like he doesn't even understand his own work. He talks about it in the most superficial and matter of fact way that it's impossible to imagine how they came out that good on purpose. And then when you see what he did on the prequels when he had total creative control, it becomes even more baffling. The original films were either a total fluke, or Lucas got exponentially dumber with age.
***** Huh, you're quite right! Richard Marquand was the director for Episode VI. My apologies for spreading misinformation, I have clearly been uninformed! Regardless, I absolutely agree with you on the different creative engines driving the films. And I must also agree with TJP77 in terms of how Lucas talks about the films. There are fans that dive more into Star Wars than he does; he doesn't seem to share the same enthusiasm about it that others do.
See? They ditched the "It's heavy" idea before the all the original trilogy was even filmed. So stop blaming the prequels on that. And to everyone that says lightsabers aren't swords: They call them swords several times in this video and at least twice in the movies. Also, at around 13:35, when Lucas explains why the prequel fights are the way they are, instead of like they were in the originals... You can't deny that was a smart idea, to make it more fast paced. Vader was crippled and Luke was barely trained. So, yeah. Of course those were slow. But the prequels are Jedi in their prime. Fast, agile. Many different techniques in sword fighting.
@@56jklove Yeah, that's why he is able to hold the sabre with one hand. But his prostethics limited his ability to move - Palpie chose to be cheap, there. ;)
I like the way George says we, he acknowledges that it was absolutely a team effort by doing this. Say what you will about him as a story teller, he's a good man
When you actually take time to think about it, the increased speed of the fight choreography in the prequels makes total sense. At that time, the Jedi were peacekeepers, meaning there were only around 10,000 Jedi to keep peace throughout an entire galaxy. Jedi were trained from infancy in the ways of the force, lightsaber combat, AND how to combine the two to maximize combat efficiency and effectiveness. These people had serious skills. In comparison, Luke had a few days of lightsaber training with Ben and a couple months of force training with Yoda before going into combat, and his opponent was 80% robot. Yoda himself says that Luke is too old to begin Jedi training, probably because he thought it would be usless trying to teach someone so old how to fight like someone who had spent their whole life training. So it makes sense why Luke vs. Vader would be considerably slower (yet no less tense) than a fight between Obi-Wan and Anakin in the prime of their lives.
Alex Bernal Ah, yes, American Graffiti and THX, complete accidents. Indiana Jones, complete accident. I'm sorry, but that's such a ridiculous assertion. Literally just watch Empire of Dreams, the full-length documentary on the creation of Star Wars, and you'll see exactly the kind of talent it took to make that film.
+oollo2001 It's weird, but it kinda makes sense. It makes me ask so many questions. Did the guy who came up with unicorns call them unicorns, or just horned horses?
+oollo2001 Well, in Sweden we often use that term instead of lightsaber (Even though some hardcore fans stick to that) so dont ever come here, you wont survive! ;)
Mark Hamill is still the best lightsaber fighter out of all the movies he gave it weight and make it feel more real like it was hard to control I loved that
I love how they perfected the ignition. In Ep 4, there was a clear cut from the transition of handle to full saber, but by the sequels, it was seamless
One thing that always nagged me about the Start Wars movies/tv shows that came out after the release of Phantom Menace: in the original trilogy, each lightsaber had its own distinct ignition sound. The snap-hiss of the blue, the cold rasp of the red, the electric zipper of the green. In the prequels, clone wars, and rebels, and in the various video games, the sounds are used interchangeably. I always thought the ignition should be specific to the blade color and the crystal used for it, to give it a sense of personal preference for the weilder
Every single time I watch this, I grin as I imagine how many little boys in 1977 asked the Santa Claus in the Mall for a lightsaber for Christmas. "Santa, I want a weal wightsabur for Cwismiss. A weal wightsabur. Pwease."
Deadstar: The Animated Series I think that they were just trying to show the actual weapons in action rather than being drowned out by John Williams’ score. It was nothing against John Williams.
2:22 That version would have looked way better than the original if it was done right. I also never realized how often things exploded in the original trilogy. They would cut a guardrail and it would explode.
It doesn’t "explode", there are just sparks and smoke, just like what happens when you cut through metal with a circular saw. It’s not that unrealistic considering how much heat a lightsaber blade is supposed to produce.
In both listening and watching, it honestly surprises me neither Lucas nor Hamill makes mention of the guy who was largely responsible for bringing out the excitement in the light-sabers in the duels in the OT ... ... namely Bob Anderson. Ben Burtt was a big part of it of course with the sound. And Lucas deserves full credit for the idea and the overall look. But Bob Anderson was a big part of the duels in TESB and ROTJ doubling for David Prowse as Darth Vader in those fight scenes. We see a lot of Anderson as Vader both in the rehearsals and filming, but no mention of him at all.
"This was your father's lightsaber, he wanted you to have it when you were old enough." What really happened: "This was your father's lightsaber, he used it to murder children and tried to kill me with it, and we had a rather long and intense lightsaber duel which ended in me cutting off 3/4 of his limbs and leaving him to burn to death in lava while he screamed, "I HATE YOU!"
Star Wars started my love for sword fighting. I remember seeing it at 9 years old and being amazed by it. It is TRULY an art that takes a high level of skill.
The speed that Ewan McGregor and Hayden Christensen move at. You can tell they put a lot of work into those fights and it shows. Definitely the best duel in the whole saga along with the one with Maul. I still love the Empire duel though. The atmosphere is perfect.
Idk if George realized but he transformed my childhood into something greater than it was meant to be. These movies made everyone so happy and so interested in what we as humans can accomplish with a little can do attitude
It's almost impossible to contemplate the idea of no Star Wars happening. I guess something else would have happened anyway but its hard to think of something better than what we got in Star Wars and Empire.
Can you imagine if SW was made with the same stances and characteristics that old Sci-fi ray guns had instead of the more 80s action hero shooting of blasters?
Btw thats great sound effect as well. I bet it didn't sound like that on the set xD So who makes the sound effects on the "making of sound effects"? I dunno... man...
As a martial artist and sword fighter I don't know what's cooler than a sword made of pure energy. Especially that some of it's styles are actually based on real sword combat.
If you are a real martial artist you would know that they aren't at all... Look at those wide baseball bat swings I mean they are wide open all the time.. They also put their weight behind their strikes like they actually are baseball bats
Oscar NotYourBuissines Well they have to be careful too. The way they use them is a lot more crucial and careful than using a steel sword. They aren't wearing armor or anything. They are literally holding swords that can cut through anything. In real sword fighting you get a few nicks in your armor no biggie, in the movies it can cost you a limb.
Adam Worst argument ever... Being careful while fighting is what gets you killed... also it doesn't look like they are careful swinging mad blind pure force baseball bat swings even if toughing someone is enough to cut them...
Dillon Oakes The body of the blade was a tiny bit cracked, but when I say "fell" I mean "rocketed into the nearby plate-glass window and who'd like a gunshot throughout the neighborhood" The blade is tough, the tip tough too. I had to hit it with a ton of force to do that.
"A very old man" implying he couldn't fight anymore, like 80 year old Count Dooku who could keep up with Yoda. I like how George changed his mind from a very very heavy laser sword of pure energy to a sword that was described as almost weightless in Knights of the Old Republic. If that was the case it's any wonder how Darth Maul was able to do a back-flip off a speeder going 70mph with his lightsaber.
tachikoma747 Well, KoTOR is not canon anymore, but i do agree with you, the fights in the Prequels are nice and all but the Originals had passion in them.
Darth Revan actually, old republic is still cannon, so as such the knights games have to be cannon as well sense old republic is the continuation of that story
tachikoma747 the weightless aspect was meant for the saber itself, all the weight comes from the hilt, since the blade itself is just energy it's weightless.
In a more civilized time (original Trilogy)...lightsaber were so flat! But honestly, lightsaber combat was one of the few highlights of the prequels. Episode 3, my favorite prequel, is grand. Lightsaber designs was equally impressive, the double bladed and curved.
Or: Luke's wild swing cuts through the bulkhead of the Millennium Falcon, damaging delicate circuitry initiating a fateful series of Hyperdrive malfunctions.
Great Point, never understood that line as a kid. It was nerve racking to see Luke wield it the first time in Ben's Bachelor Pad, knowing how dangerous it is in the hands of the wrong person. Not even a safety warning or training from Obi Won before the hand off. SMH.
All the choreography and the CGI in the prequel sabre battles be damned. The best lightsabre scene is the end of Jedi with Luke just hacking away at Vader like a lumberjack swinging an ax. It's raw. It's emotion driven. It's what a fight should be.
5:36 to 5:53 lmao It reminded me of when i used to play lightsaber duels with my friends. That scene shows us that lightsaber duels were new, not as awesome as the newer lightsaber battles

What do u think a saber is? And what do u suppose the light of a light saber is? It's a laser sword. Ur asking the guy who literally invented the name "lightsaber" to stop saying laser sword? That's like saying don't call an AK-47 an assault rifle
@@digglebick "And what do u suppose the light of a light saber is?" Plasma. "It's a laser sword." Not laser, plasma. It's just a big plasma cutter with the plasma "blade" encased in a force field so that it can be used to block/parry another plasma blade. A laser doesn't even make sense. A laser beam doesn't just stop in midair 3 feet from its source, nor does it give off much visible light without something to reflect off of, i.e., you can only see a laser beam if there's a lot of fog or smoke in the air, and even then, it's not very bright. Plasma on the other hand, is very bright regardless of what's in the air. Just look at a real-world plasma cutter, or a bolt of lightning.
boards.theforce.net/threads/practical-effects-in-the-prequels-sets-pictures-models-etc.50017310/ Have a look at this before saying blue screens everywhere. There was on location and sets in prequels.
I loved George Lucas's reasoning behind the saber dueling from the two different trilogy's, makes you wonder in which direction the new trilogy will go with when it comes to fighting, I'm assuming it will be a faster pace of fighting. It will also be interesting to see if luke restores the jedi order.
J.K Singh Well, the problem with the New Jedi Order is that it practically lost all of the knowledge on saber techniques and such that the Old Jedi Order had (in particular the Varpaad Style, which was created and used only by Mace Windu, and he ended up never teaching anyone else that style, thus it died with him)
+J.K Singh To me, it doesn't make much sense the way he explained it. Vader was still Anakin, and Obi-Wan was still Obi-Wan. Why would their styles change so much? Of course age plays into it, but take into account that Qui-Gon is supposed to be a year older than Obi-Wan at the time of his death. Lucas could just blame it on the times, as fight choreography wasn't what it is today. That is really what's at "fault" here.
+jonvegard31 " it doesn't make much sense the way he explained it. Vader was still Anakin, and Obi-Wan was still Obi-Wan. Why would their styles change so much? Of course age plays into it, but take into account that Qui-Gon is supposed to be a year older than Obi-Wan at the time of his death." Qui-Gon was also an active "jedi" right up until his death. Obi-wan hadnt been a "jedi knight" in decades. Darth Vader probably befell a similar fate- Less of a sith lord, a deadly warrior, more of a military brass figure head that was simply viewed as a relic of times long past with skills not necessarily needed/utilized anymore "but was the emperors right hand man".. Robot.. Man robot. Cyborg.
SidewaysGts Sure, he was active, but the time between Ep III and Ep IV haven't been fully fleshed out yet. So far, we know Vader was hunting Jedi during that timespan, so he still kept his skills intact, somewhat. Vader commented that Kenobi had become weak, so his focus on lightsaber skills probably did weaken. But even so, he wouldn't become the old, slow man he was when you see guys like Dooku. Obviously with the times changing how movies are made played into it.
jonvegard31 "But even so, he wouldn't become the old, slow man he was when you see guys like Dooku" Dooku again was also an "active" force user. Its also worth pointing out, people simple do not age the same. I know people pushing 50 who can run circles around people in their 30s. Maybe obi wan just "Aged bad", combined with a lack of persistence in being a jedi knight. All fun speculation of course
The Yoda/Doku scene would have been better if, in the heat of battle, Jar Jar Binks walks in all like "Whatsa going on, are weesa fighting" and Yoda and Doku look at each other and then attack Jar Jar, kill him (in 3 secs flat) then seamlessly go back to fighting each other.
Look how much thought and detail is going into making the world make sense. Imagine if some one in charge of Star Wars films now cared that much. Could be so good!
Lucas keeping on calling them "laser swords". If I remember correctly it was Alec Guiness who protested at the name and came up with lightsaber instead. Seems to me that Mr. Lucas is still a bit bitter that someone came up with something that people liked better :P
MattyDove Well he didn't write the original trilogy all by himself. He has sole writing credit on the first movie but he was helped on the final draft by Gloria Katz and Willard Huyck, who might've had suggestions to change some of the names.
MattyDove What Nukle0n said and he didn't even direct Empire (best one) or Return. The original trilogy was great in spite of him. The new trilogy he had free reign as he was surrounded by yes-men (including the actors) and we saw what happened there. Same thing happened with the latest Indiana Jones movie. Spielberg got tired of telling him no and allowed "inter-dimensional beings" and all that other nonsense Lucas has been trying to shoe-horn into a Jones movie since the first one.
What's so fascinating about Star Wars is how the fan often knows more about the lore and science behind the supposed technology and history of the weapons and sometimes characters than the people who actually created the concepts haha... I think a Star Wars fan would be extremely annoyed with me if I called a light saber a laser sword but George Lucas himself refers it as such...Albeit in a more generalized way...Hat off to Ben Burtt though, The sounds in that movie are truly iconic and I don't think that kind of dedication in sound design will ever be truly matched again. Star Wars really makes me long for a movie industry that uses more old school technology like puppets and other effects that aren't solely created on a computer but are more based on analog technology since it feels so much more organic, Not saying computer effects aren't great but I would like to see more old school technology again and especially the ingenuity.
well in episode 2 and 3 Yoda couldn't do all that cool action stuff without CGI I mean you would have never thought an 880 year old Jedi can do all that so I thank modern technology for doing that
It took me soooo long, but I just realized that in Season 7 of The Clone Wars, Ahsoka tells Anakin "Master Kenobi always said there's no such thing as luck." And in A New Hope, Obi Wan says "In my experience, there's no such thing as luck." So my respect for Dave Filoni as a Star Wars fan just went up a thousand times higher. He really reached into the very origins of Star Wars for that line. The man really does truly understand the world George Lucas created as if he were Lucas himself.
Star Wars fans repeating well-known Star Wars lines. Truly a miraculous feat in writing that only the Almighty Filoni could achieve. 1000% respect faster more intense.
I love all 6 films and love the Star Wars Universe. All episodes were unique and amazing. They earned great merits. If you didn't like them, that is fine. I understand why. I have heard every reason and it's okay. Because I love them and what you dislike about them doesn't matter to me.
Luke vs Vader in Episode VI and Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon Jinn vs Darth Maul in Episode I remain tied for my favourite lightsaber fights in the series. They may not be the most elaborate (that prize obviously goes to Anakin vs Obi-Wan in Ep. III) but the intensity and emotion the actors put into those scenes really comes through. The lighting, the sounds and the actors' movements all come together to create amazing battles that never let off the tension. That's what Star Wars is about.
Yep, the youngling jokes honestly are so overused, but sadly most SW memes are, 95% who make the jokes don't even like starwars, just attention merchants.
@@wrongwayonaonewaytrack yeah it's true I used to use memes from star wars before I was even a star wars fan I was kinda surprised about how many memes there are in the prequels

I was wondering this, I know there has been countless remasters that chnaged things but even when I was like 12 and I saw a new hope he dissapered, must have been a very early change cus the first time I saw a new hope Anikans ghost was the original actor and not hayden
gustav rundström That was a prop the actors used for reference, they edited the disappearing Obi-wan for the original showing. Similar to how on set, the Rancor was a large board with a drawing on it.
A Channel You dont exhale and inhale when you talk? Remember its not the sound of him breathing, its the sounds of his voice emulator and breathing apparatus working.
The behind the scenes training of this and the bts of the last Jedi is so humbling. Where starwars has come in production. They made it work with little they had.
Nick Salfai it's his creation and he invisioned as such, and that's what became iconic and makes you nerd out now because he's using a word you don't think describes it properly... so grow up nerd, you can say he's the worst but you'll never achieve anything greater in your life as he did.
gilzineto, I agree with you about grow up and that naming sabers and guns doesn't matter, but don't tell someone they can't achieve something. That's not your place to decide or set limits to another person.
People say that the Prequels are horrible but I like them. I can overlook the acting of Anakin because the light saber duels are glorious. If there is anything the prequels have on the Originals it is the duels. In Episode 1 you have Darth Maul, in Episode 2 you have over 50 Jedi fighting plus Yoda, and in Episode 3 you have Mace Windu vs The Emperor and Obi Wan vs Anakin.
Well you've misunderstood lightsaber duals. It's less to do with the fight itself but more to do with the interior emotions. Which is why IMO the fight between Ben and Vader in Star Wars is far better then the one in Menace.
Jewel Gal H-how can you say that? I understand the emotional part behind the duel between Ben and Vader, and it does give a lot to think about. But the fight was... nothing compared to Ben vs Maul. Objectively, it isn't. The choreography they used there was just amazing, and no, it didn't have the whole emotional aspect (although you could argue the duel showed something about Ben and his use of the Force), but damn, seperate those two aspects for a bit.
Mike Hunt oh please star wars is far from realistic! sound doesn't travel in space (or any vacuum) but star wars' space ships still still has sounds (when in space)! Some realistic aspects have to be sacrificed, and there is nothing wrong with that if it means the movie will be more enjoyable. The lightsaber duels in the PT is one of those things. but tbh I think my favorite duel is the duel between Luke and Vader in Ep.5 (simply cause I love Vader over the other PT villains.) But the best choreography, imo, goes to the duel between Maul and Qui-Gonn and Obi-Wan.

Behind the scenes footage of Episode IV makes it easy to understand why many of the actors as well as the Fox executives were rather skeptical of the project during its production. What he created 40 years ago?!?!?!?!?!?!?

If he is gonna "do whatever he wants with his movies" then he will also have to accept that millions of fans from the 70s will be annoyed by that.
Almost every fan of that movie will hate that change.

rasmasyean Same way with bullet sounds before and after "Saving Private Ryan".
rasmasyean I hear Star Wars' sound effects and think "Wow, what a horrible dated sound." So it's ironic you say that. To me the sound effects in this franchise have always been clichés. Low quality poor 1950's style things you'd expect if you looked up 'royalty free scifi sfx sounds' on the web.
The sound of the lightsaber could not have been better. Ben Burtt and John Williams are 2/3rds of what makes this movie timeless.
One Man Band All the sound effects, from blasters to the whine of the tie fighters flying past, are perfect. Even the Oscars were forced to give them an award for sound editing, despite the fact that Star Wars was very mainstream and popular, which is the sort of movie the Academy hates.
The other third is a mix between James Earl Jones' voice for Vader and McDiarmad as Palpatine
Ya when they played the SFX-less version of the fight, its easy to see how some other sounds could have made these movies much less successful. Crazy it took so many people to do things just right to make these movies seemingly perfect.

Liam Neeson was awesome as Qui Gon Jinn but I think they killed him off too early in my opinion. other than that the movies are great
Sith Acolyte I also enjoyed the duels in the prequels a lot more. My favorite being Yoda vs. Dooku :)
Joshinator Yoda's fights are always awesome 👍

I grew up watching the original trilogy on VHS and personally the prequels aren't that bad, a lot of people though feel they didn't live up to the legacy, something that was impossible from the start. As for the Special Editions I could care less about the visual effects or who shot first as long as the story is intact
The sound of Luke's green sabre is my absolute favourite lightsabre sound. The real snap as it ignites is great. Also seeing how genuine these sets were is incredible, awesome to see.
Han Solo called it an ancient weapon.

The weapon was there in the old republic era and more popular and the old republic era is like 2000 years before the phantom menace
I swear to god George Lucas made these movies by accident.
+TJP77 It certainly seems that way hahahahaha.
TallMist George lucas himself says ”lasersword” at 10:07
+TallMist
EXACTLY!
It was a more technical issue cause he clearly states that the fights did get faster in The original trilogy. And lets be honest vader is powerful
@@56jklove Yeah, that's why he is able to hold the sabre with one hand. But his prostethics limited his ability to move - Palpie chose to be cheap, there. ;)
Plus the lightsabers are nothing like real sabres. At all. Laser sword is far more accurate if you consider what it is
I like the way George says we, he acknowledges that it was absolutely a team effort by doing this.
Kyle Lehn not to mention Vader wasn’t trying to kill Luke, so it makes sense that he would slow down his strikes to match Luke’s skill level.
Without that man...
...none of this would be here. And honestly, he really seems to know what he's talking about when he describes this.
He made this by accident.
Alex Bernal Ah, yes, American Graffiti and THX, complete accidents. Indiana Jones, complete accident. I'm sorry, but that's such a ridiculous assertion.
They seem to keep true to the one-ignition-Sound-concept in The Force Awakens.

Well Dooku and Yoda practiced quite frequently through their old age. While Ben Kenobi was like a hermit and honed in his force powers.
tachikoma747 Well, KoTOR is not canon anymore, but i do agree with you, the fights in the Prequels are nice and all but the Originals had passion in them.
Darth Revan Am I the only one finding it ironic how Darth Revan is commenting on his own disappearance from canonicity?
Darth Revan actually, old republic is still cannon, so as such the knights games have to be cannon as well sense old republic is the continuation of that story
tachikoma747 the weightless aspect was meant for the saber itself, all the weight comes from the hilt, since the blade itself is just energy it's weightless.

Ben Burtt creator of lightsaber sounds? You. Are. Spectacular!
5:36 to 5:53 lmao
It reminded me of when i used to play lightsaber duels with my friends.
That scene shows us that lightsaber duels were new, not as awesome as the newer lightsaber battles

Philipp Z That does not destroy the mythical thing that is the saber,It perfectly describes why everyone in the universe cant use the force.
George- huge respect. These movies were an integral part of my childhood.
That said.... please, please, please stop calling them "laser swords".
MrConstantine02 agreed, and we should follow his example.
What do u think a saber is? And what do u suppose the light of a light saber is? It's a laser sword. Ur asking the guy who literally invented the name "lightsaber" to stop saying laser sword?
That's like saying don't call an AK-47 an assault rifle
digbick yes but through the star wars tradition, they are called lightsaber. Laser sword is so basic and such an ugly name for such a great weapon
@@digglebick "And what do u suppose the light of a light saber is?"
Plasma.
"It's a laser sword."
Not laser, plasma.
I love the way Mark just freezed after he broke the lightsaber. He just stood there like he was terrified of getting in trouble.
14:17 "On Location" ...... and by that they of course mean massive blue screens everywhere
Dude, the video literally shows blue screens at that moment. Rage when appropriate.
ugaaa5 ARE YOU BLIND?!?
2F2P Studios Deploy the garrison?
boards.theforce.net/threads/practical-effects-in-the-prequels-sets-pictures-models-etc.50017310/ Have a look at this before saying blue screens everywhere. There was on location and sets in prequels.
Thank you for showing me this thread, i have never seen this befor.
“Chivalry and honor”
Cuts to Luke slaughtering people on the sand skiff
Out of defense. The hell do you want out of this series, seriously.
Vader was still

Qui-Gon was also an active "jedi" right up until his death.
Robot.. Man robot. Cyborg.
SidewaysGts
Sure, he was active, but the time between Ep III and Ep IV haven't been fully fleshed out yet. Obviously with the times changing how movies are made played into it.
jonvegard31
"But even so, he wouldn't become the old, slow man he was when you see guys like Dooku"
Dooku again was also an "active" force user.
Its also worth pointing out, people simple do not age the same. I know people pushing 50 who can run circles around people in their 30s. Maybe obi wan just "Aged bad", combined with a lack of persistence in being a jedi knight.
All fun speculation of course
Everyone: Lightsaber!
George: Laser sword, take it or leave it.
Am I the only one who loves to hear George Lucas talking?
Yes
Black Diamond Ltd no
No. George Lucas also loves to hear George Lucas talking
@@marsalien4 No. Rule 34 also loves *Yoda's little laser sword* going to town.
He's a genuinly interesting guy. He really cares about the craft.
Ha, George called it a Laser Sword.
Matt BobcatWorld Which is even bette sounding than "lightsaber". A saber is normaly curved.
+Matt BobcatWorld In English we call it a lightsaber which means lightsaber.
+Bailey Corbin LOL
+Matt BobcatWorld in Australia we call it knifey spoony
+ryvman1000 in Greece we call it a poutsa sabre
The Yoda/Doku scene would have been better if, in the heat of battle, Jar Jar Binks walks in all like "Whatsa going on, are weesa fighting" and Yoda and Doku look at each other and then attack Jar Jar, kill him (in 3 secs flat) then seamlessly go back to fighting each other.
Zoomer30 this.... is genius
Zoomer30 That's in the special edition
It's somewhere in the Lucas Archives
Yes!!!! Lol 😂😂😂
***** And Friday they share a nice Bacta bath together

Look how much thought and detail is going into making the world make sense. Imagine if some one in charge of Star Wars films now cared that much. Could be so good!
Imagine what George could do with today’s technology
The prequels
@@4scended498 He MADE today's technology with the prequels.
@@odiadordeisrael You really think the CGI from 1999 and the early 2000s is the exact same as it is now?
@@WhoCares-dl8zr I'm talking about how he pioneered CGI technology to what it is today. He was one of the first to use CGI in the way he did.
@@odiadordeisrael Oh my bad I get you
Lucas keeping on calling them "laser swords". If I remember correctly it was Alec Guiness who protested at the name and came up with lightsaber instead. Seems to me that Mr. Lucas is still a bit bitter that someone came up with something that people liked better :P
I agree, just like he keeps saying ray guns...are we sure he even wrote these movies...
Google+ Sucks Hayden actually protested to many of Anakin's lines in episode 2, he said he sounded too whiny.
While I was watching it sounded like he was just describing the weapons, not necessarily calling the weapons by name.
GrOuNdZeRo7777 Wow, don't like CGI characters? Lucas would really HATE you. He is a frustrated animator. He really doesn't like using actors at all.
well in episode 2 and 3 Yoda couldn't do all that cool action stuff without CGI I mean you would have never thought an 880 year old Jedi can do all that so I thank modern technology for doing that
Kahlil Davis In a way, that is what I said. Although--if Jim Henson were still alive at that time HE could have done all that with a muppet.
Yeah it would be a lot of work
Harry Hui yeah I would not want to spin a puppet in circle at an old age
It took me soooo long, but I just realized that in Season 7 of The Clone Wars, Ahsoka tells Anakin "Master Kenobi always said there's no such thing as luck."
And in A New Hope, Obi Wan says "In my experience, there's no such thing as luck."
So my respect for Dave Filoni as a Star Wars fan just went up a thousand times higher. He really reached into the very origins of Star Wars for that line. The man really does truly understand the world George Lucas created as if he were Lucas himself.
In the phantom menace qui-gon jin says there's no such things as luck. I'd like to think that's where obi-wan got his wisdom.
Star Wars fans repeating well-known Star Wars lines. Truly a miraculous feat in writing that only the Almighty Filoni could achieve. 1000% respect faster more intense.
"Needs two hands"
Luke waves it around with one hand after receiving it.
7:10 this is one of my favorite little fight sequences. I like it more than many of even the prequel fights
It's more sentimental but it has his own Style
I love all 6 films and love the Star Wars Universe. All episodes were unique and amazing. They earned great merits. If you didn't like them, that is fine. I understand why. I have heard every reason and it's okay. Because I love them and what you dislike about them doesn't matter to me.
Watched The Empire strikes back, again for the 1st time in years. These films were fantastic!
George Lucas Terms
Lightsaber - Laser Sword
Blaster - Ray Gun
Lightsaber Fight - Sword Fight

*insert repeated RUclips joke about Anakin killing younglings"
Yep, the youngling jokes honestly are so overused, but sadly most SW memes are, 95% who make the jokes don't even like starwars, just attention merchants.
@@wrongwayonaonewaytrack yeah it's true I used to use memes from star wars before I was even a star wars fan I was kinda surprised about how many memes there are in the prequels
They aren’t even good memes it’s just repeating a random phrase from the movie that was funny to people for some reason
Isaac Thompson you think random lines in a movie are funny?? Lol
"Master Skywalker, there are too many of them! What we are going to do?" Lol, the prequel is filled with memes!
I've seen lightsabers on youtube, built by people around the world, so authentic looking, that I literally couldn't distinguish between them and their movie counterparts.
Why is obi-wan cut in half at 2:22? did't he disappear in the movie?
lots of changes have happened every time these are re-released
I was wondering this, I know there has been countless remasters that chnaged things but even when I was like 12 and I saw a new hope he dissapered, must have been a very early change cus the first time I saw a new hope Anikans ghost was the original actor and not hayden
gustav rundström That was a prop the actors used for reference, they edited the disappearing Obi-wan for the original showing. Similar to how on set, the Rancor was a large board with a drawing on it.
All the versions feature Obi-Wan dissapearing. This was simply behind the scenes footage.
Just an early idea that was scrapped, because it doesn't really imply Obi Wan vanished into the force as much if there's a cut from the lightsaber.
Amazing, George Lucas is amazing
*looks over at the prequels*...
ThatGuyFromBritain I love the prequels! well, maybe not episode 1 but i love all the star wars movies
The Jedi Guy loved every movie
Master Roshi they are all great!!
you like sand too?
Btw, I just noticed you can hear Darth Vader’s breathing, even when he’s talking, now if he can talk and breathe simultaneously, he really is powerful
A Channel You dont exhale and inhale when you talk? Remember its not the sound of him breathing, its the sounds of his voice emulator and breathing apparatus working.
No, it's the sound of him breathing.
Tim BM yeah but it’s impossible to both breath out normally (as in the sound he makes) and speak
A Channel Tell that to a didgeridoo player lmao... He is WHISPERING, not talking. The modulator makes the sound you hear.
Tim BM okay? What does him whispering change, he still can’t physically go FHWSSSSHHH when he breathes out, AND still talk
The behind the scenes training of this and the bts of the last Jedi is so humbling. Where starwars has come in production. They made it work with little they had.
every time he says ray guns and laser swords I die a bit inside
Nick Salfai it's his creation and he invisioned as such, and that's what became iconic and makes you nerd out now because he's using a word you don't think describes it properly... so grow up nerd, you can say he's the worst but you'll never achieve anything greater in your life as he did.
but.. but that's what they are. a lightsaber is a laser sword. it's a sword made out of laser. and a blaster is a ray gun.
Nick Salfai oh look another "die hard" fan that whines about every little thing
gilzineto, I agree with you about grow up and that naming sabers and guns doesn't matter, but don't tell someone they can't achieve something. That's not your place to decide or set limits to another person.
Tadas Jakubauskas what if what he wants to archieve is for me to say that he can't archieve something :)?
One of the biggest masterpiece of 20th and 21st century :) My childhood
Jewel Gal Yeah, the emotions are there but it is still a shit duel.
Mike Hunt And the original lightsaber duels didn't look planned out, weren't obviously practiced, and rather dull? Right.
Mike Hunt
oh please star wars is far from realistic! sound doesn't travel in space (or any vacuum) but star wars' space ships still still has sounds (when in space)!
Thank you George Lucas for giving me luke skywalker as a positive role model, my goal is to tell him in person one day there’s few people like him today🙏🏻
