It really painted a dark picture for me growing up as a Star Wars fan. In fact I one day saw so much hate toward the actor on a video about him by some nobody RUclipsr that I went through all the comments and found some of the most toxic shit that it made me want to flag the video.
It's not fair that so much of this bullshit exists for a film franchise that fans believe they own more than the creator himself.
The prequel haters will always be the worst of the fans, next to Hayden Christensen and Kelly Marie Tran haters. And I'm talking about pure hate.

    • @2bsure
      @2bsure 5 лет назад +66

Agreed. It sickens me that people feel that way about a movie, a fantasy one at that. Those people are not fans they are nerds, fanatics that think this is real. I have no problems with the sequels, in fact i've seen The Phantom Menace more than any other ofthe saga. My least favourite is Return of the Jedi and I find C3PO more annoying than any other character. People are like sheep, they have just fallen for every word spoken by internet geeks who think they know everything.

    • @mrmoviemanic1
      @mrmoviemanic1 5 лет назад +37

@Chris L I enjoyed it too. I think it works as a great introduction to the universe of Star Wars and while it wasn't as exciting to me as Attack of the Clones or Revenge of the Sith, it was fun for me as a kid, the other two films were much darker and had an M rating so I couldn't watch it unless it was with my dad.
People need to be allowed to enjoy the films they want to enjoy and not have to deal with Raging Nerds that will insult every aspect about your intelligence while spouting on about how a series of films that had just Teddy Bears, Big Foot and Bubble Headmen playing saxophones is the Holy Grail to all fiction in existance.
Having said that, I do love the Eworks, Chewie and the Cantina Bar Band. I just need to use them as an excuse for the fact that people put way too much hate into something that pretty much was already kinda silly and fun to begin with.

    • @mrmoviemanic1
      @mrmoviemanic1 5 лет назад +26

@@2bsure It's so true. People think that they own the franchise and they should be the writers. There is a great film about this called Fanboys, which is a road trip comedy about 5 friends traveling to get their hands on The Phantom Menace for their sick friend and at the end of the film the friend gets to see the film and kinda doesn't look too impressed with it, but when he sees his other friends and all the trouble they went through to get him to see the film he tells them how special the movie is to him cause he got to spend time with his mates before he passed on.
That film, while not a big fan of the Phantom Menace made a true statement about how it doesn't matter if Star Wars is people's lives, they should feel more for the fact that they can experience with the people they care about and share interests with.
That is what a fandom should strive to be, an inclusive loving fanbase that while might not agree with everything about a film and lets their voice be heard over weird things they do like in Last Jedi. It's a fanbase that should keep looking out for everyone that may wish to experience Star Wars in any which way they choose, wheater it's by Episode 1, 4, 7, whatever. It's their choice.

Sure the phantom menace was a wee bit underwhelming but attack of the clones and revenge of the sith was pure Star Wars. The dialogue was questionable in bits but it didn’t ruin the experience at all. I think it became fashionable to criticise the sequels. Now that Disney has all but ruined the franchise people are now appreciating that the sequels weren’t nearly as bad as they were conditioned into thinking.

I'll admit, I've never cared much for Jar Jar, but I don't hate Ahmed Best. He's actually quite interesting to watch when being interviewed. And in behind the scenes of the prequels. Plus he also had a cameo in Attack of the Clones as an extra, which was quite cool. I was shocked when I heard he once considered suicide cuz of the bashing he got regarding Jar Jar. And Jake Lloyd was just a kid when he did Phantom Menace and didn't deserve all the bashing he got either. Feel kind of sad when watching The Beginning Making Episode I feature on the DVD, like the part where Jake signs a form and everyone gives him a round of applause. And then of course after the movie came out and met with mixed reviews, he was bullied by school kids and everyone else. And look how his life turned out cuz of all that. Oh, and I also saw him in the movie Jingle All the Way and liked him in that.

Besides, if we viewed E1-E3 in our same 1977 innocence & mindset added to our awareness of Joseph Campbell’s heroes journey, then I believe there would be no reason to complain. But like you said, Disney loaded everything Star Wars on a huge imperial cruiser & destroyed it in a single hyper speed crash. Hate to say it but I’m grateful I’m a way. Some say "why doesnt God just wipe out all the evil in the world?" But people dont realize that would include them too if they do not have the blood of Christ covering their sins. His judgment is just and warranted because of evil in this world, but He provided a way of redemption for us through the sacrifice Jesus Christ made for us on the cross. God is patient with mankind. The good thing about the sequels is just nostalgia for the three good movies. The good thing about the prequels is sharing laughter at how bad the really were with people.

I was a kid when the originals came out. But I have to say, I've always loved the prequels too. I never understood the hate they got. I wasn't a huge fan of Jar Jar Binks, but I never saw him as a racist stereotype, and I am Black myself. A lot of people found the Neimondians to be a stand-in for the Japanese, and Watto to be Italian/Jewish. I think that when someone makes up aliens with funny accents (like George Lucas did), you are going to use things in the real world subconsciously. I don't think any offence was intentional.
As far as the plot, dialogue, and whatever, I have no issue with it. It is what it is, and entertaining set of films that is clean (no cursing, sex, gore), and family friendly

I was living in New York when people were lining up to see this at downtown theaters. I saw a few matinee showings in mostly empty uptown theaters, so from the beginning the hype stood out to me. I got the film on home media as soon as it was released and watched it several more times. At worst my feeling for it was dismissiveness but I never tore it up or bashed Lucas. I can't ignore how much awesomeness his work added to my childhood in the 80s and I'm grateful for that. At this point I've even watched Episodes 1 through 6 in sequence in a day and I believe Phantom Menace is the movie it needs to be and it flows with the rest of the series. People aware of something this big who have nothing of their own to say but who need to feel involved can always find a way to attack it, and the lowest common denominator response seems to me now to have been responsible for most of the negativity.

But, the impact of the storytelling and the compelling context it offers the following 5 films is undeniable. The pod race and Dual of the Fates alone are enough to support it IMO. That’s part of what made the prequels so terrible. Lucas was unrestrained.
What made the Original Trilogy great was that most of his team saved him from himself. He’s good at world building, and that’s about it. it’s well documented that the editors totally reimagined New Hope to recover from Lucas’ disaster of a screenplay. It was a completely different film by the time the editors were done with it.
When the prequels came around, Lucas developed an undeserved reputation as a genius filmmaker and no one could tell him no. The prequels is what you get when Lucas has unrestrained control. This is why the prequels failed because he was surrounded by nothing but yes people. Him selling Star Wars was the best thing he could’ve done.

@@marcusstrinidad I wish people would stop repeating this nonsense. Lucas was unrestrained in both trilogies. Ask A New Hope's original editor or Gary Kurtz, George fired anyone who disagreed with his vision during the OT. He is what made Star Wars great.
Unfortunately Hollywood and Disney hate George and there's too much anti-Lucas propaganda out there. Too much misinformation. Don't like the wooden dialogue in the Prequel trilogy? Got issues with the screenwriting? That's fine, just don't pretend they're not entertaining and creative movies with better story, themes, world-building and action than the OT. Don't pretend most people didn't like them back when they were released. Cause prequel haters were a significant minority which grew years later thanks to the media and their ability to shape public opinion, specially after 2012 when it was announced Disney would make Ep VII.
There's a reason why the best filmmakers and actors in the industry look up to Lucas. Online trolls trying to discredit George, diminishing his importance in Star Wars and filmmaking history, or denying his skills as a director without having watched his other work are sad and annoying.

It's like the previous movies were a bronze sculpture and the metal scraps from the original sculpture were then gathered together and amalgamated to form the Sequels.
Only Rogue One felt "big". The new movies desperately need world-building of its own because anything less appears as theater cutouts no matter how much 100s of millions are dumped into production; Instead of a sensational tour through New York City or Italy, we're left with a basic adrenaline rush and blurred everything else roller coaster.
Fixing world-building would also have the side effect of making the criticism of too powerful lead characters irrelevant. It would become a world where power is useful, not a buffet of plot devices.

@Mustiboi Salman That wasn't it with the prequels. George had a good story planned out, a coherent one, but his execution was flawed. That is why he maybe should have had more criticism while working or finally persuade one of those directors to take the job instead of him. He could still write the script like he did originally, and maybe have an editor to get some things looking better.

@@milkenobi They really aren't that bad compared to the originals when you take off your nostalgia blinders. The statement about kids loving TPM is absolutely correct, as I was 10 years old when it came out and distinctly remember all my classmates commenting on how awesome it was. Both trilogies suffer from many of the same flaws. I would actually argue the prequels do a better job of delivering on action and excitement. I'll always find the podracing, duel of the fates and the Mustafar duel exciting. Watching Luke lift rocks on Dagobah and Han/Leia/Chewie fixing the Falcon for several minutes inside a space slug is fucking boring after the umpteenth time. Let's not forget how horribly the Obi-wan/Vader duel from ANH has aged... for all the changes Lucas made in the special editions, I can't fucking believe he didn't do anything to that boring-ass duel. SC38 reimagined got it right, and honestly should just be edited over the original duel.
The sequel trilogy has not only been unorginal, it's taken what the originals established and shitted all over it, especially that abomination Last Jedi.

And if you like flashy action scenes over character development, more power to you. Everyone has their own tastes and I genuinely won’t disparage yours. I think you’re objectively wrong saying the OT shares the same flaws though. The OT has way better acting and direction. Sure the effects and choreography have aged but, like the prequel trilogy, they were cutting edge at the time.

I've re-watched Episode One at different points in my life and I found it especially moving when I watched it again recently, marking 3 years after my Mother's passing, that it really hit me. When time seems to drag along slowly and your heart is racing while mourning the loss of your Mother. Some movies hit different. You watch movies in a sort of slow motion in your head, you pick up so many more nuances and the silences are so soothing.
I'm a music artist and writer so, I appreciate the magnitude of this undertaking. When as a fan, you build up too much expectation and hype, you're gonna be merely disappointed. But you mature and life happens to you. Then when you sit down alone and watch these again, you might feel differently.
Art is to be enjoyed and entertaining, engaging and mesmerizing for the most part. It isn't home work it isn't a task. Let the story unfold and be an active participant.

I'm 25 now, yes I grew up with the prequels and my dad still made sure I saw the originals along side these prequel movies! Looking back as a kid I enjoyed the Original Trilogy and the Prequels for COMPLETELY different reasons!
The original trilogy was near perfect for me. A prefect adventure with excellent world building and characters I grew to love!
The prequels on the other hand (this might sound weird to say) looked more action packed, "realistic" and higher quality visually than the Originals. And of course this is the case because better technology is used in episode one, I understood that even as a child.
Now when I say "realistic" I mean more photorealistic in terms of CGI like how ships, light sabers, and creatures moved more realistically compared to the obvious puppets and men in rubber suits who look like they can barely see where they're going as they moved. Plus the one fight scene with Darth Maul against Obi Wan and Qui Gon looked way cooler to watch than any of the fights in the Originals. I even got my face painted to look like Darth Maul for Halloween as a kid one year!
Overall I come to recognized how deeply flawed the prequels are over the years. Thinking as a kid, "could I accurately summarize the plot of The Phantom Menace?" 7 year old me would try but then realize how lost he was. But who cares when "wow that pod race scene was awesome!" or "He's got a double light saber!!"
The prequels are practically unrecognizable compared to the original trilogy but still, George Lucas's imagination is on full display here with larger world building and cool characters that were certainly enough to make six seasons worth of a decent animated TV show and countless video games.
It's this same level of imagination that is SEVERELY lacking in these newer Disney produced Star Wars sequels. The world feels smaller by comparison and lacks the same sense of adventure that the Original had!
Despite all this Star Wars still holds a special place in my heart that has influenced me to this day towards my love of films and filmmaking!
My the force be with you all! Always and forever!! :)
Edit: Wow! I’m off youtube for like a week and over 100 likes! Thanks everyone!

With parts 2 & 3 I always end up skipping through Padme/Annakin scenes because for me those 2 together are so tedious and possibly the biggest floor in the whole saga. Star Wars: The Legionary Wars trilogy [Plot Outline]
    Episode I: _The Chosen One_
Over 1,000 years before The Phantom Menace..
As it begins there are no Jedi nor Sith, just force sensitives living in temples like monks practicing midichlorianism.
Subsequently, one of these 'force monks'; Alorod Sim the Wise of the temple on Koriban, creates a radicalized faction or 'force cult'. They build lazer swords to arm themselves (the first lightsabers) and proclaim themselves the 'Sith'.
They then proceed in marauding bands of personalized star fighters/land speeders, system after system on a sort of ' crusade', attempting to conquer the galaxy in the name of their beliefs and fulfill their Sith prophecy of supremacy over non-sensitives.
480 years have surpassed....[27 years prior. Sith Lords adopt the moniker 'Darth' to signify their rank.]
The Sith have amassed a considerable territory, with thousands of outlying star systems now under their oppressive rule.
Having recently overran the Doqhit system, after a tense battle with the Quitai army; the Sith led by Darth Sion, dispatch a royal convoy headed for the Core worlds.
They massacre its crews and take Princess Xenead hostage, demanding tribute from King Novis of Coruscant; leader of the Alliance of Sovereign Systems.
Just returned from his final defeat of the Vong General Wiibo, Novis and his subjects declare war on Red Legion; an interplanetary confederacy allied with the Sith, composed of cyberneticaly enhanced soldiers led by the evil alien warlord Malik.
The King gos to the Temple to consult Yaddle, the wisest of all force monks, about the fate of his daughter and his fortunes in battle. Yaddle then departs Coruscant on a peace mission to end a civil war between Wookie tribes and the Kashars on Kashyyyk.
In the first major battle of the war. Malik's fleet is besieged by Alliance forces over Rugalia, but the attack is thwarted by Red Legion. Malik vowing swift retaliation.
In a pivotal event known as The Siege of Coruscant, the Sith storm the Temple, declaring its monks "Join us or die!". A troubled young orphan raised in the bowels of Coruscant and a pupil of Yaddle, named Gandryth Malgus, defects and becomes a Sith acolyte.
The Sith gain temporary control of the Alliance capital, forcing its dignitaries to take refuge on the mountainous world of Cedes; a heavily guarded military stronghold.
On Cedes, the royal delegates convene in the Cedetian palace chambers. King Novis is proclaimed Supreme Chancellor of the first Galactic Republic, and pledges to reinforce its defenses after over a century of war with the Yuzhan Vong.
Meanwhile, the surviving monks seek out the sacred Kyber crystals, build there own 'lightsabers' and begin training themselves in the art of swordsmanship under the guidance of the living force and mock battles with melee droids, hence becoming the founders of the Jedi Order. Yaddle meets a force sensitive Alliance pilot named Talon Karade, who seeks to learn the ways of the force. Yaddle dubs him 'Padawan' meaning 'student' in old Coru. [End ep1]
[During the period between ep1 and ep2, Malgus kills Darth Krait to become the Sith Elect of Coruscant, and is dubbed Darth Nihilus]
Episode II: _Knights of the Old Republic_
    14 years on...
The once great King Novis has died...and is entombed on Tarvel.
Sufficiently trained, the Jedi Knights find themselves in the midst of a Republic effort to re-take Coruscant in his honor.
Overwhelmed during the fight, the Sith and Red Legion attempt a retreat. Yaddle gos to inspect the ruins of the Jedi Temple where he encounters Darth Nihilus and a duel ensues. Nihilus is wounded by a slash to the face but manages to escape thanks to a homing beacon aboard his Starfighter.
The tides now turned, the Jedi [Including: Rolin Vassis Dia Aleyian Lux Banter Hodo'Na Satile Mara & Eeth Koth] set out behond the safety of Republic space, into the Sith dominated Outer Territories in pursuit of the Sithari (One Sith); who claims to be conceived by the midichlorians and is said to be immortal.
Meanwhile, Yaddle would return to his home planet of Churwahi where he would marry Tola, Princess of the Wahians.
Know a skilled Jedi Knight, Talon Karade embarks on a solo mission to free the war prisoners of the Legionary slave ship _Vengeance_ . Using a confiscated Legion fighter, he gains access and frees the captives who take up arms against the remaining crew before Karade encounters and defeats Legion Commander Thrawn . Exiting the ships hanger, Karade is intercepted by Darth Rage in his starfighter. After a brief dogfight, Karade is shot down on the nearby moon of Atunaru 6. On its surface, Darth Rage is narrowly defeated by Karade in a clash of lightsabers. Stranded, Karade learns of the Sith world of Koriban and persuades a group of smugglers to take him there.
Talon Karade and company rondevu at the gates of the Sith enclave in the Valley of the Dark Lords. Sensing a disturbance in the force, Darth Nihilus tells the Sithari to leave the planet before taking several acolytes to meet the Jedi. Nihilus himself is engaged by Jedi's Satile Mara and Rolin Vassis who are both slain.
This distraction allows Karade and Yaddle time to free Xenead and the rest of the Sithari's servants before making a dashing escape. Leaving the planets atmosphere, pursuing Sith fighters clash with the Republic's 88th Squadron as the legendary Battle of Koriban commences. Back on the surface, Darth Nihilus takes his L9 _Dagger_ battle speeder to assist Red Legion.
The Jedi receive Medals of Valor from Xenead, who will succeed her father as Supreme Chancellor. Afterward, the Jedi knights gather to honor the passing of Satile Mara, Rolin Vassis, and others who's remains are ceremoniously burned in keeping with midichlorianist tradition. [ End ep 2]
[During the period between Ep 2 and Ep 3; in revenge against Yaddle, Darth Nihilus accompanied by several of his best acolytes, would launch a surprise attack against the Jedi Temple of the city of Chiss on the Opterix Major system, massacring many Jedi including Jedi Master Teo Vi Shan]
    Episode III: _A Fallen Hero_
Republic forces led by General Leer are attempting to retake Vaknum, a metallic world overseen by the Sith Elect Darth Nemesis, in an event known as The Liberation of Vaknum. Republic infintry must locate and dismantle a self-detonation device before it melts the planet. During the fight, Yaddle manages to defeat both Acolytes trained under Nemesis, and finally Nemesis himself. On Vaknum, the Jedi discover Malik's design for a planet-sized superweapon and take them back to Coruscant.
Meanwhile, Talon Karade and fellow Jedi Exar Koon are sent to the planet Saazish to investigate the recent assassination of a local Senator but the situation quickly escalates into an all out conflict, known as the Saazite Rebellion. Amid the fighting, the Saazites release their God-beast Eneddra, on the Republic; and its up to Karade and Koon to defeat him. Karade remarks "I have a bad feeling about this".
During the Battle of Koriban, the Sith Temple was destroyed by Republic artillery, forcing the Sith to relocate to Tyranus; one of the original 13 worlds of Red Legion.
In response to the reliquishment of their Sith homeworld, an uprising occurs on Tyranus, but is ultimately put down by the Sithari and his loyalists. One of the leaders of this insurgency, Darth Bane, turns himself over to the Republic, promising the location of the Sithari in exchange for his pardon.
A coalition of Jedi and Republic commandos are sent to infiltrate the polar base on Tyranus but, anticipating an attack, are ambushed by Malik's fleet, an epic battle erupts. It is here that the Sithari would meet his end at the hands of Yaddle after an intense climactic lightsaber duel.
Elsewhere, Talon Karade brazenly takes it apon himself to dismantle the shield generator onboard Malik's command ship _Assassin_ . Forseeing this, Darth Nihilus awaits him. Overpowered during the duel, Karade's arm is severed by Nihilus who before finishing him foretells "A day will come when your 'Jedi Order' will perish, and the Sithari his great name shall be redeemed" vvvmm!!". Malik is destroyed along with his ship, and the last vestiges of Red Legion disappear into hyperspace.
Later on. As the Republic revels in its triumph, Darth Nihilus is seen returning to Tyranus to recover the Sithari's lightsaber, that which would become his most coveted possession. [End ep3]
The Sithari slain and their prophecy broken, the Sith receed into exile for a millennia. A long lived Y'Tiven Darth Nihilus would escape and encrypt the "Rule of Two" into the Sith holocron. 700 years later apon his death, Nihilus would apprentice a young Muun Jedi dubbed Darth Plagueis and pass on his knowledge of the Dark Side. (Darth Sidious would later assinate Plagueis in an attempt to claim the Sithari's lightsaber, afterwhich the spirit of Darth Nihilus would take possession of him).
The former unclaimed Sith territories (including Tatooine; a former ship building hub of Red Legion) would be known for centuries as the Outer Rim.
In the following centuries; the Jedi Knights would attempt to seek out the illusive Sith remnant to no avail. Yaddle profisizing the birth of a 'Chosen One' that would one day bring the force back into balance.
Talon Karade for his heroic deeds is memorialized in the Jedi archives. Subsequently; Yaddle and his surviving confidants would found the first Jedi Council on Coruscant. 100 years after the Battle of Tyranus, Tola would birth a son named Yoda. The Republic armada, so ravaged by these conflicts, would never fully recover. And the Republic would be without a proper military until the Clone Wars, relying heavily on the Jedi Order to maintain peace and justice in the Old Republic.
