George Lucas: “I heard my outlines aren’t being used! This wasn’t part of the deal!” Disney: “I’m altering the deal. Pray I don’t alter it any further.”
That's absolute BS and ignorant to the entire film industry, there are few major releases based on great ideas, but there are many many films being made with great and original ideas, probably more than ever in history because it became much easier to make films than it used to be.
George Lucas' execution wasn't always perfect, but he put his heart, passion and integrity into his work. He doesn't care about awards or critics, he just wants to share his vision, for better or worse. That is what makes him a true artist. I'm glad people are finally realizing this and giving Lucas the credit he deserves.
The problem with Lucas and the prequels in general was the clunky dialogue and lack of performance direction. The winning formula was to get a director in to guide the actor's performances (including dialogue), and George would take care of the visuals. It didn't help that he treated the prequels as a soft reboot of the Universe instead of sticking to an established look, but he had a solid vision.
@@Syklonus Nnnnnnnnnnnnope. The dialogue isn't clunky, and there is virtually no difference between the dialogue of the OT and the dialogue of the prequels. George absolutely can direct his actors. Granted, it's not his strongest suit as a filmmaker, but every filmmaker has an aspect of their skillset that isn't the strongest. Scorsese has gotten the wrap of not being able to write romance. Speilberg has been teased for not being able to do comedy after 1941. Just acknowledging that these aren't their strong suits doesn't mean they can't do it. He didn't stick to an established look? First of all, this was an intentional stylistic choice. He wanted to show the prequels as being in the age of the Republic, where everything was tidy and well-kept. Flash forward to the Empire, and everything is dirty and rusty. It's a metaphor for the state of the galaxy. Second, so he didn't try to cash in on the nostalgia of the OT and tried something new with the prequels. George was always a visionary. He always wanted to experiment and try new things. He didn't just redo everything and wear it out until the public lost interest in it (which a certain Disney trilogy has done). How in the world are the prequels a soft reboot of the universe? The prequels are entirely original and they interlock with the OT perfectly. Those awful cashgrab sequels are the ones who are the soft reboots.
@@superspies32 He wrote the story outlines to the ST. Despite the official story, Disney DID use most of what he gave them. The only things they discarded were the Whills and midicholians that he was obsessed with.

26:40, when I was a kid, probably in the late 2000s, I would send letters to Lucas’ office. Each time I would get a letter back, from one of his assistants, along with a framed and autographed Star Wars picture. I really think that Lucas genuinely cares for his fans.
I'm sad that we weren't able to get more from George. Its not until 10 years later that star wars realized how much they miss George Lucas and his innovation.

When he finally starts to get them done, they might get released fairly close to each other, maybe something like once a year or two years. That being said don't hold your breath waiting for Avatar 2 to be released. And i personally would rather have seen something else from him, but especially looking at the box-office numbers, he seems to know what hes doing.
The fact that Bob Iger said he, JJ, and KK "agreed" that Lucas's stories were not "the right direction for the franchise to go in" (This isn't word for word, but close enough) and had the audacity to put that down in his autobiography is straight up sickening
ikr the original creator of star wars had an outlined story for a new trilogy ready for them, they had 40 years of lore and incredible novels published that brilliantly continued the story of the original trilogy and disney still thought rehashed new hope with next to no new ideas would be better 🫠 disney really thinks theyre better than the people who truly love this story...
@@madkoala2130 EU might have gotten the stamp of approval but it isn't actually source material. Lucas' notes, sequel trilogy ideas, and the character bible from Lucas is the true source material. So, yes you are correct there is source material; you just pointed to the wrong works.
People are cruel, and our humanity is regressing along with our values. George in no way deserved the crap he got, ESPECIALLY from fans who turned their backs on him. Jake Lloyd didn't deserve what he got, either. Look how he turned out because of it. People have no shame.
This!!! I was 12 when TPM came out. First SW film I saw in theatres and loved it. I remember the hate Lucas got. People want to pretend he was always beloved but thats far from the truth. George is a visionary. Regardless your opinion of his work, he created a Saga, something that paved the way for generations to come.
This was heartbreaking to watch.😢 As a fan who grew up with the prequels. I love and cherish those movies but hold no grudge to the creator. I do wish he had made small indie films after selling Star Wars.
I think that his whole life was just Star Wars, something that almost killed him making in the first place. An experience so bad, he basically abandoned his dream of directing. So, while he was able to tell stories, it wasn't in the way he'd once hoped. At least not until the prequels. Then he got nothing but hate from man-children until he finally sold his baby. At the end of the day, for all the positives Star Wars brought him, as stated in this video, his life is probably so much better without it.
George Lucas is full of interesting contradictions. He started out making indie films, but ended up creating one of the biggest cash cow franchises in history. He bristled at studio interference over Star Wars, but eventually sold his creation to a cynical corporation. It seems like reality got in the way of his creative dreams and to ensure financial security for his family he made the right choice. It's just sickening that Disney stabbed him in the back. The lesson is don't trust the Hollywood system.
Lol, did he really make the right choice? How many billions are necessary for “financial security”? Though, I agree he is an interesting person. He is also far too good at making money for an artist, yet he is an artist.
Lesson learned? GL knew Disney was THE worst Empire to sell out to. He didnt give a sh1t. He new Disney was in the $$ making business they are NOT in the movie making busines...
It still baffles me that Disney started a very expensive movie trilogy without a solid plot line first. They very clearly just made it up as they went along, as evidenced by the damn test screenings three weeks before the Rise of Palpatine was released. Even then they had no idea whatsoever how the movie should end. It's mind boggling! Normal people write more comprehensive shopping lists.
Agreed. There will always be debate about elements of the films - the characterization of Luke, the return of Palpatine, Rey's lineage, etc. And even if some of those things remained, like you I will always be baffled that they didn't at least have a cohesive vision or outline for the trilogy. Especially when their sister studio Marvel had shown how lucrative that could be.
@@swansong487 They had activists fighting over it the entire time. At least that's my take. Force Awakens was derivative, but nothing was hopeless after that movie. Rey was still alive and not exclusively a feminist plank, frozen in timeless perfection and drudgery, Finn was dynamic, sort of, the plot sort of made sense etc. I mean it wasn't great by any stretch, but if they had made three movies like that I think it might at least have been an average-y movie trilogy. But the two massive changes of direction and all the smaller ones made it an obnoxious, directionless, outrageously political and increasingly spiteful mess of a trilogy that makes the Hobbit look like an all-time classic.
@@politicallycorrectredskin796 Yeah, I don't really buy the whole "woke" thing. It wasn't any kind of message that ruined it, and it didn't really strike me as overly political - at least not moreso than its predecessors. I think VII was an attempt to recreate the Star Wars "formula" which it leaned too heavily on. With VIII, Rian Johnson wisely didn't try to do that. He wanted to go in a fresh direction, but in doing so he abandoned threads from VII and introduced things that would then be abandoned in IX. And IX was just a bad movie, especially when thrown in with VII and VIII.
@@swansong487 For the story telling it was. If a character is infallible because of sex, race, misc you have just written a dull character. It's basic stuff really. if you read LOTR, not even Gandalf was infallible. if he had been he would not have become a beloved literary figure. And he was basically a demigod. For the sake of the story he still had to be made flawed. Wise etc but neither invincible or omniscient. Now look at Rey. Never needs any training, never gets beaten, is always right and so on because she is a woman. It is just a seriously dull character. This is why all of Steven Segal's male characters are boring too. They are too perfect, too superior and too unthreatened by the various shenanigans of the villains. It's why kryptonite had to be invented to salvage the hopelessly dull Superman. It's a known literary problem and one of the main reasons fanfic tends to be bad. Usually at least one character is hopelessly OP = dull. KK and friends can't give a stunning and brave whamens any weaknesses, because that would be sexist! And they also can't give any white men in particular any admirable qualities either, because that would be even sexister! They even managed to ruin the Finn character with this nonsense. So now you have a movie with infallible women who never lose or face any doubt at all and evil, dumb, clumsy and confused men who always fail at everything. Because progress! Anyway, it makes all the characters, both the men and the women, dull because they become predictable. Wokeness therefore definitely harmed the basic story telling, and it is definitely a major flaw with the writing. You can't have dynamic, interesting characters if they are typecast in this childish manner. It's really what Hollywood used to do with the enemy du jour back in the day. Evil Jappos during WWII, evil Huns in the 30s, evil Islams during the Barbary pirate stuff etc. That's boring too. It's what Hitler did with the Germans and Jews in his propaganda movies. And it's all just extremely, mind-numbingly boring.
@@politicallycorrectredskin796 You seem generally sensible, regarding where "woke-ness" fails a story vs enhances it. Dystopian Sci-Fi, which mostly can be boiled down to "Good Ideas, bad results"). The alternative, (or unilateral view on an issue) I would consider, more akin to a form of propaganda, or at the bare minimum, biased by taking an inherent side]. Further, I agree with your point. "OP characters" w/ little to no flaws are boring, as no believable individual in a difficult circumstance would be without worry or flaw... ...However, you don't need to use a derogatory hate-speech to make a valid point. Unless you really think of us (The Japanese) that way, or maybe you don't understand the weight that term holds. But I don't see why you would refer to every other ethnic/religious/racial group "Normally" like Jews/Germans/Muslims, and... of course "The Evil Jappos?" (Look it up). Fine point overall, but really fucking unnecessary word choice, where there's no need whatsoever for that kind of language.
The prequels made me fall in love with Star Wars as a 9 year old. I know the flaws of the films but I cherish them for the amazing story, ending with some of the most artistic emotional poetry in the finale of Episode 3. The only thing that can come close is the MCU but the difference is Star Wars is completely original and not adapted from any source material which makes it so much more impressive. Nothing has been like it since.
@pyropulse When I say it has flaws, I mean compared to the original trilogy, not to what the trolls say. The OT has better acting and the dialogue isn’t quite as cheesy. As far as the other elements go I agree with you, it’s 99% better than anything in Hollywood today.
Exactly the same experience for me, I mean, if that films got me so in love with star wars, like many people, the ones who criticised the prequels should ask themselves if they were really that "bad"
@@jakecamilton7951Yes, they were horribly mediocre, which is worst than bad. They were lifeless and mundane, which is what it seems your generation is into. . .
What is amazing about the prequels story? The nonsense that contradicts the OT? The fact that Anakin isn’t seduced by the Dark Side, just tricked into it by the guy he’d just found out is the biggest liar in the Galaxy? The love story that made no sense as Anakin acted like a spoiled child and committed mass murder and somehow Padme still fell for him? Or the fact that Jedi all wore the same outfits as moisture farmers in Tatooine?
I totally understand why Lucas doesn't want to release the Original Cuts. He probably Hates them, for him they are proabably a Failure, something wrong unfinished, rushed ugly. What for us is Beautiful for him is Scarred. He is an Creator who wants his Vision to be his Vision and not the Fans Vision. he wants his Vision to make him happy and not strangers. I totally get that.
Especially when you consider he owns those movies unlike a lot of re-releases where it's the studios that decide and not the creator, it's kinda sad to see which side people take.
He has actually said the opposite of this several times he wants to make Star Wars to make people happy. He just has a specific idea of the universe. That doesn’t line up with what a lot of the fans want. Disney has made several changes that are unpopular. But they have also made several changes that people wanted to see. Like Boba Fett finally being recognized as a Mandalorian. And showing off more of what the rebellion was like. Other stuff people don’t like. Like I didn’t like how they treated Luke. Lucas' legacy and impact on the movie industry is undeniable. I weep over the dumpster fire that Disney made of the sequel trilogy and spin off films. Under Filoni and Favreau, Star Wars is beginning to see some redemption and I applaud their efforts to be more true to the spirit of Star Wars; still the franchise will never what is was under it's revolutionary creator.
They will probably acknowledge that he changed movies forever. That now it encourage people to make everything into a trilogy or an extended universe. I think a lot of people also talk about how he got A lot of his ideas from Dune World War II and Old movie cereals. I think eventually people will realize he was a good world builder but he wasn’t that great of a writer I also feel like later people will recognize that the extended universe or legends or whatever was truly something great. And that it really helped fill in the gaps of Star Wars.
Like the one who abandoned his principles and sold out. But who can blame him? That´s what the monetary system persuades, if not forces, us to do. And he made sure that Star Wars will not die with him, he made it as close to immortal as possible. The ball is in Disney´s court now, it´s up to them to treat it with respect. Otherwise it will fade in time. But yeah, selling your creation to a large corporation is not the way to defeat the rule of large corporations. It goes way deeper than that though, to the very essence of money creation and the telecom infrastructure that controls the central banking system. We are all pawns of our own greed and potential for corruption. But a lot is being done to combat the current system, to reveal its true nature. If George meant for the dark side to be a metaphor for all this, then he is as awake as Tolkien was.
'No one ever made a difference by being like everybody else.' That is who George Lucas is and what he always has been. There are very few as creative or as influential as George Lucas.
I really don't understand how this isn't trending. This was something I was searching for but no one had made it yet. And you have multiple documentaries. Amazing content. Near perfect. These I will watch over and over. This is the material Star Wars youtubers need to be making.
SW under Disney was really mixed. They really rushed their content in the beginning to make their money back. TFA concept art really shows that there were conflicting visions for the movie and the same with Rouge One, Solo and TROS although I like Rouge One the behind the scenes issues can’t be denied. The shows look great and Mando was a huge success. Currently all the shows look more like short term investments but yeah we shall see I really hope that Lucasfilm and Disney learned from their mistakes. And Disney don’t force Lucasfilm to make every year a movie.
Yeah I agree that star wars under Disney has been pretty mixed and because of the conflicting vision's it caused the whole fan base to split apart ( that and the controversy's and not meeting there theories ) and in resulted in the the 2 sides that are at each other's throats and attacking people outside of there circle jerk to ( those sides being the Disney enforcers and the fandom menace ), heck mandalorian was supposed to be the show that united the fanbase but all that changed when the 2020 election happened and Pedro Pascal made that meme about Trump supporters and that's when the fans went back to there unsatisfied selves and now started hating mandalorian because of it, but asiding that one thing we can hope that Disney will hopefully make the right decisions and let Dave and John have full control of lucusfilms and other people who knows what to do on the comic and video game side of the franchise and maybe actually have the fan base actually be united but then again only fate can decide the outcome of what happens
No that's not what i was trying to convay by mixed me and ontus mean that there were stuff that wasn't good ( the sequel trilogy ) and stuff that were actually good ( mandalorian, clone wars season 7, jedi fallen order, and some Disney star wars comics ) happening at the same time
I don't understand why they didn't follow George's ideas for the sequels. His ideas have always been great. He may not be the best at executing them, but he's a CREATOR. He comes up with great ideas. Disney just needed a screenwriter and a director capable of turning his ideas into reality.
I completely agree. George Lucas is a very smart guy. He’s great at coming up with ideas but he’s bad at executing them. Get someone to write and direct or keep Lucas as writer and director but not surrounded by Yes Men.
People saying that the reaction to the Special Editions was immediately negative is a bit revisionist. That only really became an extension of the prequel hate later on. Plus, the originals were still readily accessible during the VHS era. Only with the subsequent releases and the move to DVD and Blu-ray did access the originals in decent quality become an issue.

You can still imagine how the world was before your birth. You simply use the stories that the older folks, images, and history to colour. It's the fact that Star Wars coloured the pop-culture world and the world around them.
It’s crazy when you bring back something made by George, the clone wars, and it beats out everything else out there. That’s when you know the problem is with Disney, not Star Wars. Filoni gives me so much hope.
Filoni never worked that well with George's vision, plus the man is in no way the EU superfan and lore master he was billed as. He's still getting details wrong even a decade after George left. Yup same here I was born in 1994 and grew up during the prequel era and back then when a new Star Wars movie dropped it would be as if a new dr dre album dropped. Now however…. Disney releases so many Star Wars films that the franchise has lost its magic that it once had.
As a lover of both film and history, I will ALWAYS want a pristine restoration of the original trilogy as they released theatrically. And while I believe some of the changes he made didn't improve the movies, I will never bear him any ill will. He's a genius and a visionary filmmaker, and his creative enterprises have brought me more joy than I could possibly quantify. I will always feel gratitude toward him for that.
I'm actually glad the sequel trilogy was made and that it was terrible. Because now people appreciate George Lucas for the true artist that he is, usually people only appreciate an artist when they are dead and it would have been a shame if George were to pass away thinking that his own fandom hated him. I'm glad that he's finally receiving his proper dues after years of ridicule. Thank you George Lucas.
I can't praise this enough, fantastic work. You attention to detail in exploring the full story is undeniable. I learned new things and that's always worth a watch.
In my opinion George Lucas is the greatest filmmaker of the 20th century. And his greatest legacy is the influence of creative people in the movie and computer game industry. Thank you George Lucas for everything.
I grew up during the Clone Wars show and saw the first episode when I was just 6 years old. That was my introduction into Star Wars so when I watched the prequels it was after I had already grown in love with the prequel era. I admit the movies had their flaws but the story was engaging and seeing how they connected to the animated show was exciting for me. I never saw Episodes 1-6 in theaters so my first Star Wars cinematic experience was when I saw The Force Awakens in 2015 when I was 13 years old. I loved it and when Rogue One came out a year later I enjoyed it even more. This was around the time I first got social media, and began to follow star wars fan accounts. That was when I started to see others opinions on the Force Awakens for the first time. In some ways it was a good thing because it helped connect me with a community of fans, but it also exposed me to some not-so-nice opinions which I'll be honest were true and that is that The Force Awakens felt like a carbon copy of A New Hope. But considering it was only the first of three films in the trilogy, I had faith Disney would have a great story planned out. The hype was high as it got closer and closer towards The Last Jedi, but that's when things changed. After I saw it in theaters I still thought quite positively of the film, but after some reflection I decided I didn't like the way they dealt with characters from the Force Awakens like Snoke and the very absent Knights of Ren and some new characters like Rose Tico and Admiral Holdo. Because I had no nostalgic ties to the OT, I had no problem with how they potrayed Luke Skywalker. To me, it made sense that fear of failure can affect even the bravest of heroes. The fanbase became extremely toxic at this point and this was when I realised that Star Wars fans can become very angry over these things, and that its happened before with the prequels as well. Regardless, during this time I was enjoying the finale to the second Star Wars animated show Star Wars Rebels and this was the only positive thing happening at the time. People began talking of boycotting the next anthology film Solo even though to me it looked great, and sure enough I was not disappointed when I saw it in theaters. The only disappointment I had was for those that chose not to see it after the controversy over The Last Jedi. Things looked bleak for Star Wars until an amazing thing happened; The Clone Wars was coming back for one final season! I was beyond ecstatic when I saw this news. Finally, something that fans could unite together on and become more of a positive community again. There was also the announcement of the new live-action star wars show planning to release on Disney's new streaming service Disney+ called the Mandalorian and was coming in 2019. Although it didn't peak my interest that much originally I still planned to watch it when it came out. Boy I'm glad I did. Star Wars was really back. It seemed while the theatrical releases were receiving poor reception, Star Wars was making the real bucks on the small screen. As The Rise of Skywalker date crept closer I strangely didn't have a whole lot of excitement for it compared to the other films. I think the negativity of other fans was beginning to rub off on me. After I watched it in theaters I felt flat. It was supposed to be a thrilling conclusion to the saga, yet so many things felt forced or messy and there was some serious pacing issues that really soured the experience for me. I was expecting it to 'fix' any issues I had with the previous two entries but I found it to be my least favourite of the three just because of how messy and unplanned it felt. Thankfully I still had the seventh and final season of the Clone Wars to look forward to. When I finally got to watch that I knew there was still potential for Star Wars to not lose its way. It was phenominal. When the second season of the Mandalorian came out I was yet again blown away by the work of Jon and Dave. They really knew how to appeal to every type of star wars fan, and at the same time have the story planned out with a singular vision instead of two confilicting ones like what happened with JJ and Rian with the sequels. With the news of 10 new star wars projects in the works a week ago, I am once again excited and I hope to see our fanbase become a less toxic place and instead of fighting over pre-conceived expectations, be excited along with me for the future of this franchise. Star Wars gives everyone a special feeling, and no matter how or what causes it we should instead celebrate it rather than critize something designed as an escape from reality for everyone. We as fans should learn to love what we love, and dislike what we don't in the Star Wars universe, but respectively discuss our subjective opinions and agree to disagree without unessessary hate or toxicity.
what they did to luke was pretty awful... by they i mean what rian johnson did to luke was pretty awful, although jj did design the force awakens around a absent luke... which really depends on why he was absent, if he was busy doing some serious force business like holding back a invasion of dark side users that coulda been cool, if he was using the force to try to repair the balance of the galaxy, that coulda been really good, and if he had been hunting down artifacts and knowledge to banish or bind the emperors soul away from being able to harm anyone ever again, that woulda made perfect sense.
I love this comment. I love seeing people like you who genuinely enjoy the franchise. However, it also shows how the media ruins what we love. You said you loved TFA and TLJ after seeing them, but then when you saw other opinions you just joined with the group. That’s the issue. If you see something and you really enjoyed it, you don’t have to change how you feel just to fit in. Love what you love. Also… Star Wars was never about good writing. Heck, 4 out of 6 of Lucas’s films don’t really have good writing. But people still like them. Why does Star Wars now have to be perfect? Answer? People nowadays are overwhelmingly negative on everything. Especially when it comes to social media. People join in with the “horde mentality” mindset blindly because they want to fit in with the standard
George lucas refusing to sign an autograph to the guy who said he was going to sell it is totally fair. "I sign them for my fans for free" Which implies that those asking for an autograph to sell are not real fans. I think thats fair
Why George Lucas had so many problems in the film industry is because he not only wanted people to see his vision but he also wanted to make sure people would enjoy and relate to his vision. His remaster or what he likes to call his originals, are the best examples of that as even though they were very old, we found them to be enjoyable. Part of it has to do with the fact that improved technology makes the films look bad and an eyesore so his re-colorization was his way of looking at how future fans would see his films. His addition of extra scenes in the special editions also showed the fans how impactful the events were in the Star Wars galaxy. The film industry doesn't always care about what the people want as long as people will watch their films and can find a suitable cash cow.
When George served, when referring to critics “they haven’t liked any of them really“ that’s a fact that he’s lost on a lot of modern fans. A lot of people who hated the prequel‘s forgot that there was tons of controversy surrounding the original trilogy‘s reception as well. There was a lot of people who hated that Darth Vader was Luke’s father and they thought it was corny, people who thought the characters were annoying or immature, Not to mention the sheer volume of people who actually felt that the movie trilogy should have just been one movie because after the destruction of the death star they thought that the rebel alliance would’ve overpowered the empire and so further movies were not needed. George is very astute in his observation which said that basically people will hate you no matter what you do so just do what the hell you want anyways and critics be damned
Yes! I remember being a young fan in the 80/90s and there was a huge segment of the population who hated it as corny and stupid and we fans were soundly mocked. I considered myself a nerd because of how I was treated by my peers over my SW infatuation. Now I look around and it’s in Disney parks lol! I guess we were the trend setters.
Great work, congratulations. Lucas should be respected and considered. He is a great artist and the true creator of the saga. I really love the work done by Filoni and Favreau, it does feels like a legacy, like passing the torch. Sad to know Lucas felt betrayed by Disney after the Disney trilogy release. Those movies are flawed, no doubt.
26:29 is taken out of context. The guy was trying to get autographs so he could sell them to fans. In the original video, George says to him before he gets in the car “you’re selling them something they can get for free”
I loved the original trilogy, liked the prequels and hated the Disney trilogy. Probably the same with most fans. I think the lack of story in the disney trilogy proved Lucas was right. At least we got a version of Luke in the Mando that felt right. I think Kathleen Kenedy is the wrong person to be incharge.
Imagine JJ Abrams' face when they told him Lucas didn't like TFA. I wonder what Lucas thought of ROS. I wonder if Abrams went so all out uncanny nostalgia with ROS because TFA was a failure in the eyes of his mentor.
-You don't use the "ending" of the Saga that the original creator pitched -You wipe out the entire EU(I can understand post-ROTJ, but ALL of it was extreme) -You cancel Clone Wars -You shut down LucasArts -You have Mark Hamill saying that he couldn't consider the character he was playing as Luke Skywalker any more That is an absolute failure in spirit, depth, creativity, and integrity. The Kennedy Productions(7-9, Rouge One, Solo) are Null and Void as far as I'm concerned. Filoni birthed Clone Wars with Lucas, Filoni created Rebels, Favreau and Filoni created The Mandalorian. THAT is true Star Wars.
I've watched so many of these video essays and documentary style breakdowns of Star Wars. This is the one of that has touched me the most, and made me truly understand and appreciate what George did for not just our childhoods but as a man with the heart and soul of an artist. Thank you for this labour of love
This hits the feels so hard. The research and insight into George Lucas and Star Wars is exceptional. As a film student, I respect what George Lucas has done and am fascinated with his thoughts on the film industry so much more. I will always love everything Star Wars no matter what. Without him, there would be no Star Wars or independent film. I'm glad he still gets involved with it and is settling down to do other stuff he wanted. Words cannot do this post justice. Incredible job with this dude. I definitely want to see more documentaries from you.
So a man worth over (before the sale to Disney) 3 BILLION dollars was scared into selling his franchise to Disney to save 500 million dollars in taxes. How on earth would he have survived on 2.8 billion dollars . . . Just goes to show how much the whole franchise meant to him.
55:10 As a 16 year veteran of Hollywood film & television production, as well as having worked with JJ Abrams from 2002 through 2005, it is my humble opinion that as far as Gen X is concerned (and remember it’s Gen X and only Gen X who exploded Kenner across the galaxy 1978-1984) the Star Wars franchise is unsalvageable. My personal attempt to view the Solo film as well as the first Disney led venture both ended in nodding off with a half smirk on my mug. This is not a slam on Lucas or JJ Abrams (who was a lovely Creative to work for) but it is most definitely a smash on Disney. They’re a corrupted company who all industry insiders, all below the liner’s, can’t stand working for. From the cut rate catering to the pathetic contracts (aka less pay than you’d receive from Sony or Warner Bros for the exact same work) the “mouse house” has devolved to the rat hole. Fun fact: in 2002-03 some clever Basquiat type artists in Los Angeles plastered silhouettes of a corporate rat with block letters reading GREED all over Burbank and Hollywood. They were everywhere. Word on the street was that Disney hired from the bottom of the barrel to hand remove them. It was (eh hm) bring your own scraper. Brings a sting to this Gen X-er’s eye to level these blows at the company who crafted the original Pirates of the Caribbean dark ride, the Haunted Mansion, Tikki Room and Nautilus Subs ….but all things must end eventually and Disney is poorly obfuscated social engineering. And a money grab, while warping our kids.
In 1993 the Marin Independent Journal did a 2 page spread of the “Lucas Empire” It was like a corporate flowchart of all the companies that George Lucas owned. By 1993 standards (or 2024 standards) the “empire” was breathtakingly impressive. Whereas Lucasfilm may have been cash strapped 18:22 let there be no confusion, Mr Lucas presided over a legitimate corporate empire. Incidentally I met George Lucas late that year. I waited on him at Chevy’s Fresh Mex in Greenbrae, CA.
Just here to remind everyone that until recently George Lucas and the Star Wars Prequels were universally despised by pretty much everyone for over ten years. And after seeing the overwhelming positive reception to the Disney shareholders meeting, I fully expect this Disney hate phase to fade from memory just like the George Lucas phase did. Because no matter the era, no one hates Star Wars more than Star Wars Fans.
The sequels have no redeeming factors as to the prequels only have a couple of things wich suck for the rest they are great movies and fit perfectly with star wars

that's why he looks so devasted. he was always fighting against the system yet the ended up selling his own child to the biggest stuido system in hollywood. he sold his own child. also he wouldn't have to sell that if it wasn't for ubama's laws :'(
Lucas never did any wrong and the OT fans are just mad that Quigon got offed quick and that Hayden captured the depiction of an emotionally conflicted teen TOO well. Jarjar is fine. It’s a kids movie as he made clear from day1. Fans get numbers behind them and think that means they’re right or that their opinions are somehow more than opinions cuz if the numbers. Lucas ONLY dropped the ball when he sold to Disney and I will forever stand by that.
I have a theory, everyone wants to forget when they were cringy edgy teems or they want to forget how corrupt the politics of our world are. These are two of the biggest points of the prequels and maybe are a reason why generation Z and millenials, who see the future in a darker way than the generations before them, love prequels and especially clone wars.

I've always loved George Lucas since I was a kid in the 70s. I appreciate your video and say nothing more than that. But I also witness how social media totally dragged him down for his Prequels. Now, after Disney and their attempt at Star Wars, some people seem to be hypercritical about now liking George Lucas? Don't know. Maybe it's just social media itself. Thanks for your video, keep up the good work.
Seeing those opening clips of all the theater hype makes me so sad. When i went to see rise of skywalker and the last jedi. I had an empty theater, no one but me and my friends. No one cheering no one was happy. No one was excited. It was empty and sad
Lucas was one of the best world builders ever. That was his strength. That's why we still care about movies made 40 years ago. Because we feel like there is still more to learn about this amazing world. That's the main difference between then and now imo. Every minute of his movies feel like they have 10 pages of backstory behind them. Every minute of the sequel trilogies feel like they have 10 words of backstory behind them. They have more advantage and more money than ever before at Disney. They have no excuse. They need to get back to that world building centric style. That's what Star Wars is all about. It's about the depth and wonder of a whole new amazing world. Where we feel like every third character could have their own amazing movie or TV show if we fleshed them out. The fact that they didn't even plan out a basic outline for the sequel trilogies is an absolute crime. And whoever made that decision should be fired. Millions and millions and millions of dollars left on the table not just from movie tickets, but merch and everything else, including more successful subsequent movies and merch and it just snowballs from there.
He should've hired Filoni from the start. No offense to Kathleen Kennedy, but how is she considered to be a successor for the films while Filoni on the other hand who worked for years on the show has the brains to follow George's vision and yet not being picked
@@farisgeekworld As someone once told me, choosing Filoni over Kennedy could' ve made Disney real mad, causing them to ultimately do something to ruin it. Kennedy, on the other hand, had showed almost no backbone or initiative up to that point in her career, so George probs assumed that he could guide, advise on, and consult with her. Obviously, that backfired tremendously.
What a great documentary and the things after Star Wars after George Lucas made the films and founded his companies. That's not good that Disney didn't make the films he had intended on doing!
George Lucas: “I heard my outlines aren’t being used! This wasn’t part of the deal!”
Disney: “I’m altering the deal. Pray I don’t alter it any further.”

Perhaps you think you're being treated unfairly?
This is the way. The Disney way.

George Lucas: This deal’s getting worse all the time!
George is right, there is a fear of creativity on the film industry today there are almost no movies based on ideas that didn’t exist before
That is why tv is getting all the good content. Art is alive it’s just on your streaming service.
hence all the crappy remakes of films that have been made i could wright a novel of them.
Absolutely, and unless the industry starts to innovate more soon, I dont foresee them surviving. There are only so many times you can remake things.
That's absolute BS and ignorant to the entire film industry, there are few major releases based on great ideas, but there are many many films being made with great and original ideas, probably more than ever in history because it became much easier to make films than it used to be.
@@alluvialedaempfer962 I must disagree . The potential to make good films is good but the plot and screenwriting are bad these days.
Spielberg's execution isn't always perfect either.
@@MrZackavelli never said it was either, nor did I even mention Spielberg in my comment.
Couldn't agree more.
I just hope Lucas realizes that he's been redeemed in the fans eyes and will be remembered positively for his legacy and integrity.
He doesn’t need for redeem, those who throw rocks at him for Prequels must beg for his forgiveness.

I'd argue the only effective use of "Wokeness" is through presenting the philosophical issues multi-laterally [ie. BOTH sides of a "Woke" issue having their benefits and detriments highlighted to observe or imagine their implementation: (ie.

I wonder how history will view George 100 years from now. He truly is a trail Blazer
Star Wars is going down.
Like Tesla after his death probably, since during his life many people considered him crazy or a hack

Not if you had a few VCRs
The despecialized Editions are really the closest thing you see that comes close to a HD unaltered Star Wars.

I'm actually glad the sequel trilogy was made and that it was terrible. @@PasserMontanus What exactly is so funny about this comment? Emil's just being honest.
I actually hated the open end of the Empire strikes back. But i did like the Hoth assault.

However, it also shows how the media ruins what we love. You said you loved TFA and TLJ after seeing them, but then when you saw other opinions you just joined with the group. That’s the issue. George lucas refusing to sign an autograph to the guy who said he was going to sell it is totally fair.
"I sign them for my fans for free"
Which implies that those asking for an autograph to sell are not real fans.
The film industry doesn't always care about what the people want as long as people will watch their films and can find a suitable cash cow.
i love george lucas. how much pressure he had to deal with, and how he did it according to a vision, when everyone else did it for darker reasons
In 1993 the Marin Independent Journal did a 2 page spread of the “Lucas Empire” It was like a corporate flowchart of all the companies that George Lucas owned. By 1993 standards (or 2024 standards) the “empire” was breathtakingly impressive. 37:20 Disney been trying to buy Star Wars since the 80’s. Also there is no SW after Lucas
that's why he looks so devasted. he was always fighting against the system yet the ended up selling his own child to the biggest stuido system in hollywood. he sold his own child.
also he wouldn't have to sell that if it wasn't for ubama's laws :'(
Lucas never did any wrong and the OT fans are just mad that Quigon got offed quick and that Hayden captured the depiction of an emotionally conflicted teen TOO well.
Brilliant, simply brilliant, StarWarsOnly. This was an awesome insight into George Lucas and the transition of Star Wars to Disney.
7 mins in tears ran down my cheek I was born the same year as empire was released and I've know no world without Starwars And can't imagine a life with out it..... ✌
I cried as well. After seeing Luke in the Mandalorian and remebering how they trashed him in the Sequel Trilogy :( It gets me all the time. Empire is one of favorite Movies of all time
@@darthvaldez999 Same 😂
@@darthvaldez999 The Mandalorian is the show that will save Star Wars from certain death.
Just spent my first day off in ages watching all your documentaries. Excellent work, dude! You deserve way more views and subs.
Really appreciate you taking the time to watch them! I will make more in the future I promise, cheers
@@StarWarsOnly I really appreciate the time and energy you've put into making them. It must've taken a huge amount of time to collect all the footage and images. I'll look forward to your future uploads.
An artist like lucas will never satisfy but inspire other artists to achieve more and think out of the box. This man is one of my biggest inspirations. Thanks for this great video 🌟
Spending time with his family, and being a loving father, I could see no more fitting of a future for the man who gave us Star Wars!
This is the best star wars documentary in many years
As far as I'm concerned, there is no Star Wars after Lucas.
George Lucas hired Kathleen Kennedy
“Sad music starts”
He should've hired Filoni from the start. No offense to Kathleen Kennedy, but how is she considered to be a successor for the films while Filoni on the other hand who worked for years on the show has the brains to follow George's vision and yet not being picked

@@farisgeekworld She worked with him for decades.
I had no idea about George making Pixar, that made me feel like I entered a parallel universe.
The world of Star Wars accompanied with Williams' music is just pure class.
What a great pleasure. Thanks a damn lot for this hour.🇩🇪❤️👍
What a great documentary and the things after Star Wars after George Lucas made the films and founded his companies. That's not good that Disney didn't make the films he had intended on doing!
