"Is this about him and Tarja?"...we'll never know....but it could very well be. I think that Tuomas wrote a lots of songs about Tarja and his relationship with her. Ever Dream and Ghost Love Score (among few others) might be about their relationship.
There is a lyric in Master Passion Greed that fits very well with what you said: "Did you ever read what I wrote you?" Which is Tuomas asking from Tarja if she actually ever understood the messages behind the songs.
When people talk about this, I can't help but to think about a text that is written on the Century Child album:
"All I ever craved were the two dreams I shared with you. One I now have, will the other one ever dream remain. For yours I truly wish to be."
The one dream that they already have being Nightwish.
This is all just guessing of course....

Drummer in this one is Jukka Nevalainen, the OG drummer of Nightwish. This album is released on 2002. Dead boys poem is released in 2000 on Wishmaster album. Ghost Love Score is released in 2004 on Once Album. This album "Century child" is first album where Marko Hietala plays bass and singing and doing some backing vocals. Marko is doing backing vocals in this song.

Knowing the story about what happened later - the letters, Tarja leaving etc. - it feels like this is a "Cassandras song" somehow. Knowing what's going to happen, but unable to stop the ride of fate. But now looking back to the earlier days of Nightwish this seems to explain so much. 🤔

The 3 parts are entitled Long Lost Love, One More Night to Live, and Christabel. The 10th and final song on the album's original release.
Tuomas wrote the lyrics. The music was written by: Marko Part I, Emppu and Tuomas Part II, and Tuomas Part III.
Tuomas has said that this song finishes what Bless the Child( song #1 on Century Child) started.
Not to be confused with 'Beauty AND the Beast', from the 1st album, Angels Fall First, which is one of the songs that Tuomas sang the male vocals on in studio.

Actually, Dead Boy's Poem is earlier than you think, it's on Wishmaster (2000), but that song has a lot in common lyrically with the whole of Century Child (2002) - they sort of belong together thematically. But yes, this Beauty Of The Beast is before the famous long songs: Ghost Love Score - Once (2004), The Poet And The Pendulum - Dark Passion Play (2007), Song Of Myself - Imaginaeurm (2011), The Greatest Show On Earth - Endless Forms Most Beautiful (2015). I like how you said it's like a template for them. :)
Also, this can loop back to the beginning of the same album - this is the last song, and it ends the way the albums starts, with Bless The Child. It's very similar can can flow back into itself. :)
Jukka is on drums, not Kai; this is old, and Jukka was the first.
Also, how is it possible that this has 0 comments? Is there a bug?
I am getting better at unpacking Tuomas's lyrics, but this one is elusive. Parts of it are very simple and obvious, then suddenly I don't understand what he's talking about again. What you said was helpful. :D
Yes, I've had that feeling of "is Tuomas making Tarja sing a song about herself?" multiple times in many different songs. I don't know the truth, but many songs make perfect sense if you read them as Tuomas being in love with her. (Even Phantom of the Opera - "I am the mask you wear - it's me they hear" - Tarja is the mask, and who we really hear when she sings is Tuomas. Right before that song on the album, there is Feel For You, and it has some lyrics that echo that same idea.) If it's true, if it's about her - then he has written a LOT of songs for her to sing about herself. I haven't seen any hard evidence yet (then again, I'm new), not even in comments, but even if all we have to go on are the lyrics, I think assuming he was in love with her is a pretty solid guess. "Sing this song from me to you" - I love that. And yeah, it's a bit crazy.

I find this song like a dark fairy-tale in the beginning, like The Beauty and The Beast but backwards, a story where she is cursed, she is the "beast" and is in search of redemption, or healing, here comes the middle part of the song, in which increases the speed of the instruments it becomes heavy, showing the struggle and desperation she is in.
I love that about the classic songs of NW, I also love the lyrics of the song that says; "beware the beast but enjoy the feast he offers" in my opinion, this is one of the best songs of Tarja's era, not only vocally or instrumentally, but because of how Tuomas played with a few things that might come out as controversial, the insinuation of sensual and sexual stuff I almost feel bad for Tarja for singing those lyrics 😅
There's also a song called Nymphomaniac Fantasía, that is a whole different thing, the dark poet teasing his muse, maybe?, They seem to like to test the boundaries of religion, combining sins with a dark, beautiful lost love story.

    Hello Eric,
I wrote you a few lines back then, and we had a short exchange in the RUclips comments section, you happened to have reacted 100% of my suggested songs (Nightwish and Ayreon) exactly in the order and I thanked you for that...
Exactly after that I suggested "beauty *OF* the beast" to you, and this was looong ago, :)
and I also had some "i concur"s ,but that's not the point...
i was listening to music in the car (at work) today and this song came on and i repeated 3 or 4 times, i happened to be thinking of you (and "debbie, the question queens", i requested that song there too) For me this song is like "Ghost Love Score" version 0.5a
What a coincidence that this happened today, watching your reaction and have a good cold beer
So I immediately ask for another Tarja song, "Wanderlust"
I hope it goes a little faster this time ;)

Late to the party here, but to answer one of your questions - this song falls right in between "Dead Boy's Poem" ("Wishmaster", 2000 album) and "Ghost Love Score" ("Once", 2004, the last one with Tarja) . A textual analysis of all three together would be a treat! One can see the lyrical hero processing similar thoughts through, if you will, different stages of personal development - in art, in life, and in love. A lot of Tuomas's songs that are not a direct comment on the topics of the society ("Noise", "Weak Fantasy"), or an anthem to Nature (any number of them), can be said to have this personal/ biographic touch. Almost everyone spots that, but then it is subtle and evasive enough that it is hard to put a finger on specific verse and contend with certainty what it was referencing (except the ones where the author admitted his intent). At times, Tuomas as a poet awes me more than himself as the songwriter. Amount of double and triple meanings in his songs is a joy to pick out. :)
Still I wonder what Tarja could have been thinking singing some of those lines. They come across like pages of an intimate diary, replete with hints, regrets and the play of darkening passion.

    Shout out Vallte!
    Great suggestion.
These earlier songs are unbelievable given the music at the time.
Not to be confused with Beaty AND the Beast from the first album, in which you get to hear Tuomas sing!
By the way (edit) Tuomas rates Century Child 7th of the 9 albums, saying
"After Wishmaster, I seriously considered quitting the band, especially thanks to the
departure of the [original] bass player [Sami Vänskä] and my slight burnout. Then I went on a hiking
trip in Lapland with Tony Kakko from Sonata Arctica, and he talked me over that.
We needed a new bass player, and we needed new management because until then it was me and
Jukka (Nevalainen] the drummer, taking care of the business side, so we got management and we got Marko, who was already a big name in Finnish metal - we were all big fans.
There was a lot of bad stuff happening in the band as well - that's reflected on the album. Slaying The Dreamer was a way to get rid of all that frustration. Artistically I found film music, Hans Zimmer above all, and that really can be heard on Century Child. But the album didn't take us much
on the next level. Artistically it did, but not commercially."

Oh and for what it's worth, Eric, I have never subscribed to the idea that Tuomas was "in love" with Tarja. I've never seen any real evidence and although Tuomas has been very open about emotions in many many interviews, I have never seen him mention this (Vallte may have...).
I believe a lot of people who say this are projecting their own feelings onto Tuomas. But hey, what do I know?

I don't think it's personal. At this point, Toumas has invented a whole genre of music. She's a unique instrument that only he can push a song through - Phantom of the Opera-like. I dig Tarja's solo work, but it's just songs. Toumos wrote Epics for her to sing. Everything that went wrong later makes more sense through this lens.
It's why Floor and the band saved each other. She added things to songs, like Jukka, Marko and Empuu always did. The songs weren't for her, Floor adapted to the song.

I Concur, I think that there was Conflict between Tuomas and Tarja, Because of the Nature of Two Minds of an Old Friendship and the Demands of the Music and the Band. Tuomas said in an Interview about the Break with Tarja, To Replace Her might not feasible because of Her Level of Talent and He was not Going to Try. I think they respected each other abilities so much, but He saw that She was Changing and He Had Not, Now they were Headed to Different Shores or Paths in Life "The Pain of Life". The Mistakes made between him and Tarja brought Him to Open up to Floor and Her Talent with a "New Spirt" gained with Time and Milage.

I listened to this album quite alot when I was younger. Didn't pay attention to the lyrics.
Now, about a year ago I picked this one up and when this song came, it was obvious. This song is definitely about Tuomas and Tarja. The album was made the very year Tarja got married. Tuomas stood by and saw that happening. He saw it for years. And it was killing him.
In there's "Trees have dropped their leafs, clouds their waters" It's basically fall, the coming of a long, dark winter. Maybe it refers to himself, he has cried and now there's nothing ahead but emptiness. And the verse "With my long lost love under the black rose" to me is Tarja being "taken away" by her husband, her changing to something different etc.
And in the future songs there are verses like "Did you ever hear what I told you?
Did you read what I wrote you?"
And also about the husband there are words like "Hey Judas, your Christess was our love" and "Seek her
    Seduce her
    Tame her
    Blame her
    Have her
    Kill her
    Feast on it all"
So all in all, this song is definitely made by a man who is forced to look at his love falling in love with another man. And there's nothing anyone can do.

It’s usually new fans that get pissed about the Toumas and Tarja rumor. They usually hate that NW even existed before Floor. In many old interviews Toumas stated that Tarja was his muse. He also stated that she was the beauty and he was the beast. There are a lot of references to beauty and the beast in older songs. This is why the rumor was started. Many years before the split with Tarja. That’s why Marcelo was asked about it, and he seemed to confirm it. Also, his reaction during Everdream from the End of an Era concert, really gets people thinking the rumors are true. It has long been rumored that that song was about Tarja, and he gets really upset at the beginning of the song. You should check it out.

I'm so tired of those ridiculous rumors that Tuomas was in love with Tarja. This is nonsense and there is no evidence of this. The only reason why this rumor could have arisen was a letter to Tarja about her dismissal, where Tuomas mentioned Marcelo, Tarja's husband, in a negative light and many had the impression that it was about some kind of love triangle or unrequited love.
But Tuomas simply forgot in his letter to mention Marcelo's role in Nightwish as Tarja's personal manager and her authorized representative and that all the conflicts of Tuomas (and the rest of the band, including management) with Marcelo were solely due to business issues. It was all described in detail in their official biographical book.

Didn't tarja's husband imply he and tuomas had a confrontation of some sorts reg. her idek, relationship status i guess lol? I'm not taking anything anyone says at face value it's just so much drama. But i'm p sure marcelo kinda backed up that claim. Tuomas said there was no romantic feelings tho so it would be disrespectful to just say he's lying and also not really anyone's business who wasn't directly involved.

@@kazfarah7623 Neither Tuomas nor the band had any problems with Marcelo, until Tarja made him her personal manager and at the same time withdrew herself from participating in the discussion and planning of any matters related to Nightwish.
With Marcelo, the situation in the band became unhealthy: He began to abuse his power and it was as if he was "renting out" Tarja to the band under his conditions or Tarja would not perform. And since Tarja was planning to leave Nightwish anyway after another album/tour cycle, Marcelo sabotaged any plans of the band that could bring profit only in the future, not now (because of him the band had to cancel the 2005 US tour, which of course angered people at their American label at the time, Roadrunner records ).
It was also Marcelo's constant conflicts with Nightwish managers: he wanted them to demand more money for concerts from the organizers, even if it could ruin a long-term business relationship, etc.
In general, the crisis was imminent and any romance had nothing to do with it at all.

@@SokolRock i read all that in the bio as well. Emppu said it was the problem that they had 2 managements, right? That if they had done it only Ewo's way Or Cabuli's way it would have been fine and that Ewo were sometimes too nice with people and didn't make sure the needs of the bands were met bc they avoided conflict and only made sure the booze was there while Cabuli was more the get things done priority one kinda person. And once personal and professional mixed after the marriage, no wonder it blew up. I still think a lot was miscommunication and Nightwish's management could have done better too esp in the beginning, as emppu said so it maybe wouldnt have come that far. But tarja def wouldnt have stayed in the band either way, only the split couldve been kinder for everyone.

    • @SokolRock
      @SokolRock Год назад +4

@@kazfarah7623 This was just a personal opinion of Emppu, who was then the most friendly with Tarja out of the whole band. So of course, he didn't want that split more than others. But Emppu was wrong about Marcelo, because his actions proved that he wasn't trying to help the band, but was acting only in the interests of his wife and himself. A vivid proof of this is just that story about the US tour cancellation and the threat of cancellation of Australian/New Zealand concerts, to which Marcelo agreed only after Tuomas threatened to cancel the South American leg of the tour, which was organized by Marcelo himself.
Marcelo was not interested in the strategy of conquering new markets for the band, which at the moment led to losses, but promised profits in the long term, when he and Tarja would no longer be in Nightwish. He and Tarja wanted to earn all the "fast" money they could before they left the band themselves, in order to have more resources to start her solo career. It was pure selfishness and greed, which Thomas mentioned in the letter.

Tuomas wrote about Tarja. Tarja still sings one NW song from her NW era at her concerts for fans. And when asked about it, she said she would never sing NW songs that are about her. So she was aware that some of the songs were about her. Maybe that's why she doesn't even sing the Ghost Love score (album Once from 2004, when Tuomas already knew it was over and Tarja was fired a year later), even though fans still want her to. When the Century Child album was released in 2002, Tarja was already dating Marcelo and they got married the same year.
Century Child is very much about lost hope, more melancholic and harder than previous albums.

I absolutely believe that this song is about Tuomas feelings for Tarja. I think his love for her was the drive for so much of his writing greatness until Imagaerum. Now that Tuomas is married and seems very happy, his lat two albums have really lacked the somber feeling that made Nightwish so powerful.
