For me, the idea of this song is brilliantly childish: to reclaim all the tears you've ever shed, which took you away from the purity of the inner child. And this can really only be done with exuberant joy, without frowning for a second. It's like an enchantment, driving away the sadness from us. In this sense, the genius of this performance in Buenos Aires is that they used the initial exuberant energy of the audience as a stepping stone to raise everything to a higher level. There are other good concert recordings of this song (Helsinki 2012, Wacken 2013), but this is the first concert where Floor danced wildly on stage to this song, as far as I know.

Agree totally Gabriel. My only criticism of the Wacken Version (it's my only criticism of the entire Wacken 2013 concert, in fact) is that Troy's pipes are way too low in the mix. They can barely be heard. Like I said, it's my only criticism of what was otherwise one of the most perfect concerts I've ever seen and heard.
Agreed David. In Wacken version of I want my Tears Back you can hardly hear the pipes and it's all nuances. Same goes with Last of the Wilds. In some concerts Troy's pipes are way too low in the mix.
It’s so awesome to read all the thoughts about lyrics by Nightwish fans and some are very similar and others far apart but all make sense when stepping back and reading them. That’s the beauty of Tuomas’s lyrical ability… for me this song is a dying wish of an adult who’s become a cynic who doesn’t feel anything anymore and wants just once to be able to feel the way he/she did as a kid when experiencing these things for the first time. This is why they are my favorite band …by far.
Fun fact: you can see Emppu reacting to Floor dancing like mad, but what's not in this video is how he cowers at Floor's invitation to do a dance together. There's a fan cam recording of that moment. At 11:03 here, you can just see Floor doing "okay, another time perhaps?" 😄
Recently at Hellfest, Floor said to the crowd at the start of this song: "It's also Emppu's favourite, right Emppu? The man's got moves..".
I might be the only one thinking this, but I have a sneaking suspicion that this friendly little taunt might be bit of "pay back" for that moment in BA 😉

Floor is amazing when it comes to stage presence, gratitude, getting crowd involvement (you can't not respond to her when there in person - she is mesmerizing and commanding, in a very positive way). Saw Nightwish the first time in NYC a few months ago. Definitely got the impression that they fed off the crowd and that it was rewarding for them. They are all so talented, too. It goes without saying. Stunning live performance from all of them.

That was the right Version. This is party. This is pure fun and energy. Best performance of this song with that crowd and very good kamerawork.
Even the Wacken version can't keep up. With all other songs Wacken is in front.
I think Tuomas writes the songs, the lyrics and composes and then leaves it in parts Floor how she has to sing it. That's roughly how Floor explained it using the example of "Shoemaker". Because it happens that the imagination of Tuomas and the possibilities in reality diverge. Floor then makes it possible according to her possibilities.
This song has been on their playlist for a long time, the audience at every concert is breathtaking to watch. The Hellfest concert in 2022 is remarkable the crowd makes a hole and people dance in a big circle, truly awesome!!

This album Imaginaerum, where this song is from, is just an amazing album, one of Nightwish very best, every song is a masterpiece. You should listen to Scaretale live with Anette, the intro to that song will just blow you away, it's a great song with Anette and Marko.

Cute thing about Floor and Emppu. There's a fancam video of this performance out there and on it Floor does this little "dance with me" shimmy to Emppu. The poor dude runs away to the wings of the stage. Floor did it to him again on one of their recent festivals where she chased Emppu. Those two have this great stage relationship where they're always having fun. Emppu is smart enough though not to get run over by Floor. BTW, during this same song at Wacken 2013, Emppu turns off Floor's in-ears as he goes behind her. It's a hoot to watch when we know what is going on, the plotting, the execution, the aftermath. Too bad the editor of these videos seems to always miss this stuff. We sometimes need a fancam version to see all of it.

Well described on the Wacken version! Troy and Emppu plotting that for several minutes before and right after Emppu turns off the in-ear, Floor looks at Troy and he shrugs "wasn't me"! Such a great band chemistry!

I just watched and listened to your "reaction" on Greatest Show On Earth on Wembley Arena. You made me so emotional and teary. Your every word and and the way you show your deepest emotions is absolutely beautiful like music. If Tuomas ever would see your channel, I believe he would underline your every word and deep emotion he wanted us to feel and understand. So true that this music brings out sad and happy and strange variaty of feelings we cannot describe and do not understand where they emanate. I live in Finland and have seen Nightwish only once while Tarja Turunen still was the lead vocalist
If you look at the right time at the beginning of a song, you'll see tuomas looking the band over like a father looking at his kids making sure all is right before starting...

Another great reaction. Our favorite American metal guy talking about football like Europeans and South Americans only increases your reputation in our eyes. Well said about Tuomas and Emppu. It's lovely to see Emppu enjoying everything. It is maybe surprise to those who don't know that one of the biggest issues in this band was Tuomas' and Emppus musical conflict in their early years. During Tarja era Emppu felt like he was outsider inside the band. I'm sure without Jukka he would have left the band (Jukka is his childhood friend and neighbour). I assume they fixed things after they kicked Tarja out.

This is from 'Once Upon a Nightwish: The Official Biography 1996 - 2006':
(year 2001)
Emppu felt like he was not able to fulfill his ambitions with Nightwish. He still feels almost like a hired gun who only does what is asked, even though he feels he would be able to give the band a whole lot more - if he just had more time to work on his guitar parts without interference. At the time, Emppu found it particularly difficult to fit into his role in the band.
Emppu confided his troubles to his former teacher, Plamen Dimov (knew original members very well, because he was music teacher when they were in elementary school), who encouraged him to just bite the bullet. "It got to a point where the breakup of Nightwish was very close", Dimov says. "Emppu felt like he should be able to do something more than just execute Tuomas' ideas. Tuomas has a dominant personality, and Emppu is a melodic rock guitarist, not a hardcore Metal guy. Tuomas is minor key, Emppu is major. It was a difficult phase they went through, touring the world and getting all that publicity at such a young age. It's no wonder they didn't handle it very well. On the other hand, each and every band goes through times of conflict - if they never fight, they're not a band at all."
Great reaction again! Tuomas is as you say for certain not a composer for lazy singers or musicians. So many sides to what he does, yet there is still a method to his madness :-). There are recurring themes within and across albums and songs. The band is a bit of a perfect storm of musicians who met each other, were a the right place at the right time. i seriously hope Marko will get well enought to join the band again, he is part of that perfect mix. So many songs yet to go :-). My choice would be either Elan of my walden. Elan from the Wembley set and My Walden from the Tampere performance by preference. Buenos Aires version is my favorite by far, from the crowd energy, to the band's fun, playful shenanigans on the stage, I always call this song, both, a Celtic party and one heck of a workout, you see Floor dancing and jumping around from the beginning to the end, pumping up the public even more than they already are.
PS: the surprise in their faces is priceless, as the crowd starts chanting so loud, the energy went through the roof
although this show was recorded on 11 sept 2018 during the tour in south america and mexico the dvd was only released in 2019 , the confusion of dates comes from there.🤘🤘

If you ever watch Please learn the set list in 48hrs, or Making of Endless Forms most beautiful album documentary, well at least in 48hrs set list one they show that during 1 year touring they played this song 154 times. It was their warm up song in rehearsals and sound checks. So not surprised if Tuomas was not all in necessarily. Heh. Can remember if they said it in other documentary as well.

This must be the best reaction I have ever watched. It was not a reaction. It was an analysis. And it was spot on. All the best from north.
You picked absolutely the right version for the Greatest Show on Earth. The Wembly version is more intimate and, in my humble opinion, more epic than the Tampere version. Yes, Tampere has fireworks, but nothing beats having Prof.Dawkins on stage and seeing the reactions of the audience. Priceless.
As for this song, this is probably one of the most epic live performances I have seen. Makes me want to travel to Argentina for a Nightwish concert. 🇫🇮❤️🇦🇷

What a great reaction Eric, ty! From your epic "I'm not that guy" rant, via your observations on "controlling that danger zone" to your remarks on standing back and witness the music being performed.
At 23:27 .. you have this lovely thing to say abt Tuomas: "He is such an introvert in a way, that he kinda would rather be in the audience watching himself".
Bingo! That's exactly what Floor also said when she was interviewed on site, standing before the impressive Tampere podium the day before their magnificent show there in 2015. That whole mini-docu, filmed before, during and after their Tampere gig was done so well, in that in just 15 minutes you'll experience Floor as a stellar performer as well as the lovely person she really is.
Which brings me to a heartfelt request of mine. Would you consider Eric, reacting to that short documentary? It's English subbed, done for Dutch Tv so you'll get the extra bonus of hearing Floor speak her own language (of which you so rightly say ppl should be proud of!). Her parents were also interviewed right after the sound check at the Tampere concert and there's also an afterwards where Floor says something about the terrible burn-out she suffered in 2011, only one year before she got that famous call from Tuomas c.s.
So here goes, Floor "back to school" (see what I did there, hehe..) with her former classmates from the Rock Academy: "Floor Jansen in Dutch show Reunion (Tampere 2015)". That video shows what a humble and lovely person Floor really is, despite being this goddess on stage. I think this is also why their chemistry is so good. There is no diva in NW, Floor is one of the guys (without losing herself). Being Dutch and having both feet on the ground (typical Dutch expression) contributes to that.

I've seen that mini-doc/interview. I have mentioned it in a few past reactions. If I'm not mistaken, her parents were there and that was the first time they saw her with Nightwish. For the Tampere show I think. I'll put that in the HDN (Handy Dandy Notebook)!

Nightwish - Shoemaker, Live at Hellfest 2022 would be nice to see. To do that ending on a record is impressive but to do it live is epic. Some will probably say "do the Deichbrand version insted but I thing it's better sound at Hellfest and RUclips has started to remove Deichbrand reactions.

The beautiful thing about a genius is that they will never admit or even think like they are actually a genius...... Something that gets a little bit overlooked when I watch a lot of these live nightwish songs is the fact that every now and then the camera focuses on Tuomas and he is either smiling or singing the lyrics out loud and every time he does that and it's on camera it moves me........ And I think you are absolutely right I think for the first time in his career that he is genuinely happy and he is so unselfish that he loves watching other people fulfill his dream and it's just magical there is no better word in my opinion............

There are many "wild" audiences around the world but here is borderline crazy. Most of the time in music shows is great (in sports not so much, to much violece sometimes). But in this case, and in this show in particular you can even hear the crowd "chanting" Emppu's solos (Ghost Love Score is a good example). Keep it up and cheers from BA!!!

Hi Eric, I would love to see you react to Gethsemane by Nightwish. It´s an absolute quintessential Nightwish song that you really have to experience. There are 2 versions I adore in particular. Buenos Aires 2018 (Floor) and Lista LiveTv 1999 (Tarja). I think it would be so special to see both actually but I would be so grateful with the one you choose if you do it. @@flaviovergottini652 Yes, I'd seen that one, but thanks though! When I watched it I felt better for Marko - he seemed really engaged, and happy to be starting things up again. (He mentioned Northern Kings as a distinct possibility). On the other hand I felt let down a bit, as a return to Nightwish doesn't seem likely soon.
Another great Nightwish reaction. From the very start with Ghost Love Score you've never disappointed. You seemed to "get" Nightwish faster than I've seen any other first-time-reactor. Can't wait for the next one Eric. On the Irish pipes, they remind me so much of the Irish bars of my hometown of Inverness in the Highlands of Scotland.... great vibes, great times
In these comments, some people are talking about the "Please, learn the setlist in 48 hours", but there is another one, called "Nightwish - The Denver Debacle (2012)" on the RoninEdits channel. The "48 hours" docu is mainly about the tour and the "Denver" docu is more focused on the fact they cancel the gig or not because Anette was sick, and the solution they came up with. With interviews of Elize Reid and Alissa White who sang for Kamelot, the supporting act.
This is my second favorite song of Nightwish's, Alpenglow being the first. It really speaks to me, though exactly how I couldn't explain. If memory serves, somehow Floor did this with a cold XD
Yeah, the entire band is quite humble. The openers for them in LA, Beast in Black, complimented them on being "fantastic to tour with" because of their great attitudes and helpfulness.
So glad you got to this one! Just a blast! Told you when you first started your channel that you would be grinning by the end of it...

I wonder if you ever heard of Brittish singer/songwriter Colin Vearncomb. His first marriage ended, his mother got seriously ill, his record company dropped him, he was homeless and did not have money to buy even bread and milk. That was year 1985. Hi Eric. I loved this performance. What an energy. I really respect your reactions and the way you break down what is happening on stage. You are so correct in saying no Tuomas Holopainen song is ever easy to sing. In this case Floor is putting out tremendous energy dancing around while still able to get her breath back for the lyrical parts. And her ability to command the crowd is unbelievable. Six weeks ago for their sunset concert at Hellfest 2022 she also got the crowd going nuts creating a mosh pit and then a dancing circle. @despairingleonardo commented that "If the goddess wants a circle, the goddess gets a circle." Dude. Another amazing reaction and breakdown. Thank you for continuing the Nightwish reactions.

I totally agree with you about Floor. The same can be said about Tuomas. He creates all this, yet after a show he's very humble.
Great commenting Eric 🤘Tuomas said in one interview that he does not write songs by the mood what he has. He writes stories very well done. His lyrics are complicated many times yes, but still so beautiful. Floor Jansen said once looking at Tuomas' writing..."am I supposed to breath at some point?"

She has the honor to sing the Dutch National Anthem at the F1 Grand Prix in Zandvoort/Netherland. Wich take place next month, on September 4th. Luckywise the German Television shows 4 Grand Prix live and for free. The race in Zandvoort is one of them. Maybe you can see it in a live stream, don't know. I'm not a huge F1 Fan at all. I hate cars. But i have to see this amazing once in a lifetime moment for Floor live. For sure...stay safe, buddy

I feel blessed to be alive in the Time of Floor. Have we reached peak Floor yet? I don't believe so. Her skill at transforming from song to song or even within one song I believe is unmatched. I can['t wait to see what she brings in the future. We are also lucky to have Tuomas' lyrics and composition to thank for not just Floor's performance but stretching all the members skills to meet the needs of the music. It makes for compelling, energizing, enthralling adventures in music.

I love how Floor plays up to the crowd, and in the background Emppu does a lemmings dance beeming as always. Floor just has so much fun with this song and seeing her just let the energy take over and dance freely around the stage is very special, so much energy, I Want my tears back always makes me feel good

I just came home 10min ago from open air where Nightwish played. It was a treat. Not as good as normally, but Nightwish is Nightwish. :D Live is live. One of my favourite was Storytime. They did play Greatest Show on earth, but it was cutted version.

I could see having some beer with Emppue and him just cracking you up all night. He does it to you, me, everybody when you look at him you cant help but smile and feel good! Theres a story i read where Tuomas said when he was putting a band together in HS with Tarja, he picked Emppue cause he was the only kid in school that played rock guitar. And he had long hair, thats funny.
