Much harder to get nowadays (for obvious reasons) is the XBLA port OutRun Online Arcade. HD by default, widescreen by default, it has the brighter colours of the arcade and plays great.
Outrun 2 is 100% my favourite racing game. I remember playing it mostly on the PSP in my teens while sitting in the car. I even played it at home and got the PS2 version.
Now, while the PSP version isn't great compared to other version, it's still outrun 2006 and you can put it in your pocket, which definitely makes it an essential, because what if you're not at home and feel the urge to play outrun 2?
I'm craving a modern port of this so much, I'd buy it on my PS5 and Switch both if Sega ever did a remaster! For me, modern racing games sadly can't compare to this masterpiece :)
I'm kinda in the same boat , except I'm craving to get my OG xbox out of storage with this game along with my 2005 480p wide screen plasma... just gotta wait till I finish moving house!
Came here to say the same thing. Would love this on PS5 for the convenience of playing on the couch with friends. I’m sure one of the major roadblocks for this ever getting brought back is the Ferrari license. 😢
I recently played the peasant version of the game (2006 Coast to Coast on PS2) on a CRT and despite that I don't feel like I really missed anything by not playing the other versions. The game is so fun that I found I just got lost in the moment. I agree with your statement that the only bad way to play Outrun 2 is to not play it.
@@VideoGameEsotericayes please 🙏 I actually play the PSP version on my Mac with RetroArch, filter x4 , shaders crt bloom effect … Graphically it’s far from the arcade version but the fun is quite the same. A really good way to spend time on Saturday night … And I love the content on the psp version
If theres a way to mod the pc version, I'm sure someone could fix the colors and such. ENB/Reshade could help, but also a direct mod if the textures for the skybox and lighting.
The latest PC version unofficial patch even updates the driver and passenger 3D models now. And you can obviously increase resolution and force anti-aliasing for the best possible image quality. The Lindbergh version adds a few more effects however. Performance should be equal though, modern PCs can easily run the port at the full framerate without any slowdowns. I can't really see how performance could be better on Lindbergh.
I played a 2 car SP SDX at Zenia Boulevard in Spain this summer. I think the one I played in Southend was also an SDX but my memory is a little hazy on that one.
Amazing game, I got the pc version with all the patches and hd textures..... it's my favorite version. but when it comes to racing I like wipeout more.
Hah I just started playing Outrun 2006 on PC for the first time last night, funny you posted this rn. I'm having a blast playing this game, quick pickup and play sessions. Have only touched SP mode so far, ~5 minutes to get through any route is so so nice. Have played a very limited # of arcade games but this and night striker are definitely my top 2, perfection!!!
In late 2024, you should really be throwing 2006 Tweaks into the mix, it has some really nice graphical enhancements. The big issue with it is that it doesn't have the force feedback that you get when playing the original arcade game.
I love the PC port of this game. I have an old xp machine set up permanently on an 85hz crt, and probably 75% of my usage on that setup is this game. (it also does a good job with hydro thunder and the 3dfx San Fran Rush port)
I was able to get it running at 1080p 120fps in docked mode with upgraded textures and a fixed HUD for widescreen that doesn't stretch the HUD graphics. The Deck runs it like a beast!
I dont have a PC, so I'd love to see a video comparing the Xbox and PS2 versions of the game. I havent bought either yet but this week I'll purchase one of them...
The arcade version has higher contrast/bloom, which makes it look much more colorful and pleasant. But i suppose you can fix that on PC with reshade. Also, the Ice Track looks much better on arcade, the PC version is missing some details and textures and there's a black void above the mountains. The only issue i have with the arcade in Teknoparrot is that the sound is too loud and i'm getting some distortion in some places (like the ending map screen).
I had it in there but I found it very distracting visually. I admit to making choices to make myself happy sometimes haha. It’s just out of the corner of my eye I see it and I start not noticing what’s actually ON screen. Quirk of mine
Best version is OutRun 2 SP SDX (2006) in the arcades. The hydraulic motion simulator cabinet is amazing and needs to be experienced, especially with a few friends. It's still great on a home system, but even better in arcades!
One of the very few games that I played so much and enjoyed so much, I ended up buying boxed copies of every version when it came out. I have no idea *why* I did that but I never regretted it. Especially since a few of them became pretty hard to find pretty quickly... also one of the few games that really had great ports-- obviously some are better or worse, but the PSP version even holds up surprisingly well and was a great experience at the time. (not so much anymore now that the Steam Deck can play the PC version at "better than contemporary PC quality" settings)

Instead it seems like inaccurate re-vision illustrations of Outrun, which have distinct color palettes and future retro vibe that doesn’t look like outrun, inspired synthwave-style outrunWave music. I’m saying “outrun wave” because saying Outrun never seemed like a good name or label at all when the trend, iconography, and music have nothing to do with outrun.
Lindbergh's differences can be quantified: all cars cast shadows and the shading/bloom is overall a step up, especially on player and rival cars. I would bet the polygon count is raised across the board but I can't really tell at a glance here.
What's odd is that even the Xbox version had non-player car shadows. Sadly cuts like this happened all the time in 2000s PC ports. Be nice if the 2006tweaks guy added these.
PC version for sure. Heck, I just got the latest version up and running on my Steam Deck again as well and am finally happy again, since I can play that anytime I want now. Flawless and perfect arcade game. Just completely unmatched.
I've played the pc version quite a bit, with all the mods and it is an excellent game, but there is something about the spx linberg arcade version, and the ps3 version that I like better, the colors seem more vivid, I'd like to see more side buy side comparisons of these 3 versions.
i've noticed the lindbergh version only scales the assets correctly if you play it on 5:3 aspect ratio, everything outside 800x480 or 1280x768 looks super weird. The jp ps2 release of special tours is still the best imo, not only for including new music, but also for being the only port having true force feedback for compatible wheels.
I installed the remastered PC version of OutRun 2006 earlier this year and it plays normally when I first boot it up but then, when I try to play it again, it won't boot up at all and the same thing happens every time I reinstall it, it works once but never twice. I'd probably have put more effort into troubleshooting it if PCSX2 version 2.0 hadn't coincidentally come out around the same time where it plays my storebought copy of OutRun 2006 for the Playstation 2 in high resolution beautifully. OutRun 2006 had slowdown issues on older versions of PCSX2 on my PC but whatever those issues were, they were fixed in 2.0.
Use a wrapper like DgVoodoo to run it. It solves a lot of problems with old games. I run this game on Windows 11 quite well, it just speeds up a bit in some parts, but it's not frequent.

Outrun 2 SP (the Japan version of Outrun 2006) is a great way to play the game as AM2 did a bit of polishing to Sumo Digital’s port to clean up the frame rate and added a few missing graphical things back in. Love playing it in 16:9 480P mode on my 20L5.
The Outrun 2006 PC version doesn't really need patching and modding in order to run just like it did all the way back then though? I just ran it on my modern PC (ryzen 5500 + rtx2060s, win11 23h2) i just carried over the old install folder which i installed and no-cd patched back in 2009 from retail, the disc is SOMEWHERE here you know how it is in some odd storage box, and i just had to configure it with my display resolution and it just ran no problem, played right now with my Xbox 360 Wireless Controller Kit for Windows which i also purchased around 2009. The mod doesn't seem to be making it any worse though.
PS2 Japan - OutRun 2 SP - version received further development from SEGA themselves and was released one year after - Coast 2 Coast - It`s a high dollar game now.
OutRun2 2006 is the best version, 2nd is OutRun2 SP. The reasoning is because of the addition of drafting makes such a huge difference. Maybe its a skill issue but ive always had such a harder time beating a course without drafting enabled
I play that Outrun 2006 PC port most these days, especially after the recent fixes. I'd love to get the original Xbox version at some point or have emulation reach a point where it is playable but yeah this is the greatest arcade racing game
Fantastic review as ever. I have it on the original Xbox but I have the Japanese version of the game which had some graphical improvements made to it. Overall I think this is a near perfect way to play OR2. I notice the PC version seems to be less authentic when it comes to the shadow effects at the back of the car so it doesn't look as grounded as it should. But that's just my view.
I also find the constant sideways drifting in this game slightly tedious. It's still a contender for my favorite arcade racing game though, the others being Daytona 1&2, Sega Rally 1&2, Ferrari F355 with three monitors and the sit-down deluxe version of Outrun 1. "Arcade racers" in general would be a wider term and would include console-only games as well.
Great video! Btw, Is there a way to play this game above 60 fps to mitigate the crappy motion resolution of digital displays? Only semi-solution I can think of is enabling BFI on RetroArch using PCSX2 or PPSSPP cores. But then you miss the extras that the PC version brings.
Ah the Outrun 2 jungle! I have the delisted PS3 version, the PSP version and the Xbox version. As far as I know the Japanese Xbox original version is the one with most content and includes the Scud race map. This was omitted in most other versions. Is it in the Lindbergh version? Could you do a video on how to run Techniparrot on Steam Deck and how to set it up to your TV and play those fancy Lindbergh games?
Having played a ton of PC & Arcade.. can say there are MANY differences; especially in HEART ATTACK MODE one that comes to mind is the arcade needing you to be drifting for RUN THREW COLOUR... the PC doesn't require this, caught me up once & destroyed an Arcade run. Glorious game, real shame it's no longer for sale on Steam. Can't really tell how I like to play it most, being in an actual arcade machine car is awesome (F40!!).. but PC is by far the best way to play it at home I also started playing it on Xbox.. never stopped playing!
In the head-to-head, you can definitely tell the PC's skybox is less vibrant. I'd probably go with the Arcade version, despite never playing this game.
Hey bud. When i tried to reinstall outrun 2 i installed it with that ftx pack or whatever last week it wouldnt post the game. Should i go from vanilla to the update you posted about, and skip that other modpack?

I always get confused about the outrun 2 cabinets. The US 4:3 crt twin always had a wood cabinet with sun-faded marquee. The European version, has the nicer cabinets with molded platic sides. What cabinets were the later versions in?
Outrun 2SP on the Lindbergh hardware was exclusively in a super deluxe cabinet. You would know one when you see it. It's basically an amusement attraction you play.
"The best camera is the one you have with you." True for Outrun too. PSP version is best version. But Outrun 2 is good enough to be worth having both a portable and dedicated home setup. I would absolutely invest in putting together a sit-down cab PC rig to do it justice, if I had the cash and space.
Have you ever tried the fxt mod? Its my favorite way to play with a wheel. It enhances the game and adds arcade mode and improves the force feedback. Also i noticed on my version i have to manually edit the config to turn on vsync. Which makes it so much smoother.

Wouldn't it be great if the original Space Harrier get the same kind of treatment like Outrun 2 and Afterburner Climax? Because the slower pace Planet Harrier feels like Panzer Dragoon.

I suspect that your theory on the color difference is right about the multiple GPU targets This is something I have noticed for decades, while in theory these things should be the same, there is just a very slight change based on the hardware. A classic example is that there is just nothing the same as the Atari PC color pallets - they just pop!
I did not like later XBOX -version. It had some effects missing. So, i claim the best version outside Arcade on home console is original XBOX -release of OutRun 2, on regions were cheat codes work, and Daytona 2 + Scud Races are included. It is also interesting that there are certain huge graphical differences as well between OutRun 2 -regions. I'm currently playing on PS2 remake of original OutRun. Pretty good actually.
A testament to how absolutely amazing this game is, I have only ever played the PSP version, and that is where my love for this title was formed. That rather sorry analog nub of the PSP was how I had to play for years, and I still found it to be exceptional, then once I hacked my Vita, then the game truly went to the next level. As now the game looked better, sounded better, and best of all it now played better with an actual analog stick. And yeah, by no means was the PSP game bad, as I now have a Steam Deck and can play this game in better ways, and I still play the PSP version on my Vita regularly as if it ain't broke, why fix it?
@@VideoGameEsoterica As much as I loved the OG arcade game of the 80's, due to the 3D graphics, Ferrari Testarossa, and of course the amazing music, I never enjoyed it much, as it was hard as nails. But with Outrun 2, everything was much improved and taken to a whole other level, and the gameplay is just perfection. Yep, no complaints from me.
I have all the Outrun 2 versions I think in my self made Cab builds and yes it is the greatest Arcade Racing game ever even eclipsing the original which was great of course and yes I do play with a wheel too, although .......... The excellent Arcade Outrun 2 SPX is awesome it`s also too easy and so I suggest that anyone playing it on the teknoparrot emulator go into the operator settings and at the least set the difficulty to at least hard or very hard to actually be challenged if they wanna put some real time into the game and have more fun in the longrun
The OG Xbox version is actiually the most vibrant one. It's essentially Chihiro lighting with very slight texture dowgrades here and there. I'm not quite sure about lindbergh but I think even this version is inferior in terms of lighting compared to XBox or at least not better.. The PC version though is the worst. The arch at 3:47 is a good indicator how good the lighing works. On Xbox is really shiny. The PS2 version has also pretty close lighting.
Been playing the most recent pc port of this on the lenovo legion go and it plays flawless Played the xlba arcade port on a asus rog ally so my outrun 2 fix is all good

You can tell wich version is wich just looking oto the tires of the cars, if the tires shine is linbgergh or xbox original, if dosnt shines, is pc or ps2.
The first versions of Outrun 2 and Outrun 2 SP in 2004 were xbox-based. Chihiro is basically an xbox with 128mb ram and a Sega 512MB DIMM unit slapped on top. So the xbox version is pretty much arcade-perfect. Yeah Lindbergh version may be slightly better but most people won't notice. The PS3 version of Outrun 2 is also near perfect and is easily obtained just buy buying a PS3, flashing custom firmware and downloading the PSN game files (I bought a PS3 just for Time Crisis 4, HOTD4 and Outrun 2). There's also a PSN version of Daytona USA which plays exactly like the original. For an all-in-one game playing box the PS3 is a good choice when hacked.
@@VideoGameEsoterica Lindberg came after Chihiro and is a unique Sega arcade board. It's heavily PC-based but it is a unique board and has a CF slot on it that the encrypted Linux OS boots from. But yeah I get what you mean. Even so the later Sega arcade systems are not exactly basic off-the-shelf PCs. Try to get a replacement motherboard for one and you'll see just how difficult and expensive it is ;-)
I used to own the xbox version, along with halo,true crime streets of LA & project Gotham racing & superman the man of steel, i dont have it any more but I now have it for my ps2, I'm surprised how decent it looks on the ps2, but from what I can remember they cut back playing the ps2 version I think they cut back on the trees & some of the castle walls & arches were reduced? I could be wrong but I didn't notice much difference other than that I love my ps2 version, bye the way have you seen what frogbull has made for the Sega Saturn, he's made the arcade from shenmue for the Saturn! & everything works, you can actually play space harrier & hang on, & even that punch bag game works, you can see it running on the shenmue dojo channel or frogbulls channel from last week
If I had the real arcade cab, I'd choose that hands down, but otherwise it's the OGXB version, because the PC version doesn't have the same responsiveness as the arcade and XB versions, as well as native CRT support on the OGXB, plus the XB version has better audio than the PC one, emulated with TP has even more latency, canny wait for an FPGA version one day though, maybe a port to Replay OS with DynaRes 2.0 could tide us over till then.
I don't even know what a Lindbergh is (I didn't even know there was a second outrun 😅) but to my eyes it looks way better than PC..... PC looks squashed, overly sharp, slows down more, and the picture lacks a certain depth I can't describe because I don't know much about graphics. Whatever that Lindbergh is, it's rocking it.

i honestly just like the xbox version of OR2. I was disappointed by the tweaked mechanics of 2006c2c, despite the added content. never really had much exposure to the arcade version of OR2 outside of a couple race sessions, never played the PC version... and never had the need to emulate when I was still playing my xbox.
But outrun 2 and SP actually run on the sega chihiro CD ROM base board which is based on Xbox architect, Outrun 2 SPDX runs on lingbergh. As for my favourite it’s always the arcade original but I found Xbox to be a very good close match to the original not unlike outrun 2006 where my copy of psp version ran at 30fps so I got rid of the game but ps2 version I can’t say as I never played it. I hope an outrun 3 comes out soon as it’s long overdue.
This game is great but it does have one noticeable flaw - the transitions between stages are those dull looking embankments, they kinda suck. O.G Outrun has those lovely stage change effects that fade in. Maybe loading / streaming is a restriction and they are there to disguise it?

That’s the reality about OutRun 2. There is no “bad” version
PS2 actually have better draw distance than Xbox. I was very surprised by this.

Also, the Ice Track looks much better on arcade, the PC version is missing some details and textures and there's a black void above the mountains. The only issue i have with the arcade in Teknoparrot is that the sound is too loud and i'm getting some distortion in some places (like the ending map screen).

Best version is OutRun 2 SP SDX (2006) in the arcades. The hydraulic motion simulator cabinet is amazing and needs to be experienced, especially with a few friends. It's still great on a home system, but even better in arcades!

One of the very few games that I played so much and enjoyed so much, I ended up buying boxed copies of every version when it came out. I have no idea *why* I did that but I never regretted it. Especially since a few of them became pretty hard to find pretty quickly... also one of the few games that really had great ports-- obviously some are better or worse, but the PSP version even holds up surprisingly well and was a great experience at the time. (not so much anymore now that the Steam Deck can play the PC version at "better than contemporary PC quality" settings)

Lindbergh's differences can be quantified: all cars cast shadows and the shading/bloom is overall a step up, especially on player and rival cars. I would bet the polygon count is raised across the board but I can't really tell at a glance here.

What's odd is that even the Xbox version had non-player car shadows. Sadly cuts like this happened all the time in 2000s PC ports. Be nice if the 2006tweaks guy added these.

PC version for sure. Heck, I just got the latest version up and running on my Steam Deck again as well and am finally happy again, since I can play that anytime I want now. Flawless and perfect arcade game. Just completely unmatched.

I've played the pc version quite a bit, with all the mods and it is an excellent game, but there is something about the spx linberg arcade version, and the ps3 version that I like better, the colors seem more vivid, I'd like to see more side buy side comparisons of these 3 versions.
i've noticed the lindbergh version only scales the assets correctly if you play it on 5:3 aspect ratio, everything outside 800x480 or
1280x768 looks super weird.
The jp ps2 release of special tours is still the best imo, not only for including new music, but also for being the only port having true force feedback for compatible wheels.

I installed the remastered PC version of OutRun 2006 earlier this year and it plays normally when I first boot it up but then, when I try to play it again, it won't boot up at all and the same thing happens every time I reinstall it, it works once but never twice.
I'd probably have put more effort into troubleshooting it if PCSX2 version 2.0 hadn't coincidentally come out around the same time where it plays my storebought copy of OutRun 2006 for the Playstation 2 in high resolution beautifully. OutRun 2006 had slowdown issues on older versions of PCSX2 on my PC but whatever those issues were, they were fixed in 2.0.
Odd. Sounds like maybe a registry problem. Try running it in compatibility mode. Try an earlier OS in there
Use a wrapper like DgVoodoo to run it. It solves a lot of problems with old games. I run this game on Windows 11 quite well, it just speeds up a bit in some parts, but it's not frequent.
I have the patched PC version and it's amazing.

@@TheShedcade I just discovered the rather beautiful Outrun 2006 Tweaks but sadly they haven't shoehorned in any FFB support and I'd got kind of used to that with FXT (even though it isn't perfect).
Outrun 2 SP (the Japan version of Outrun 2006) is a great way to play the game as AM2 did a bit of polishing to Sumo Digital’s port to clean up the frame rate and added a few missing graphical things back in. Love playing it in 16:9 480P mode on my 20L5.

The Outrun 2006 PC version doesn't really need patching and modding in order to run just like it did all the way back then though? I just ran it on my modern PC (ryzen 5500 + rtx2060s, win11 23h2) i just carried over the old install folder which i installed and no-cd patched back in 2009 from retail, the disc is SOMEWHERE here you know how it is in some odd storage box, and i just had to configure it with my display resolution and it just ran no problem, played right now with my Xbox 360 Wireless Controller Kit for Windows which i also purchased around 2009.
The mod doesn't seem to be making it any worse though.

OutRun2 2006 is the best version, 2nd is OutRun2 SP. The reasoning is because of the addition of drafting makes such a huge difference. Maybe its a skill issue but ive always had such a harder time beating a course without drafting enabled

I play that Outrun 2006 PC port most these days, especially after the recent fixes. I'd love to get the original Xbox version at some point or have emulation reach a point where it is playable but yeah this is the greatest arcade racing game

Fantastic review as ever. I have it on the original Xbox but I have the Japanese version of the game which had some graphical improvements made to it. Overall I think this is a near perfect way to play OR2. I notice the PC version seems to be less authentic when it comes to the shadow effects at the back of the car so it doesn't look as grounded as it should. But that's just my view.
The Xbox version compared to the pc versions does have a slightly diff look to it
the car shadow has actually been fixed on pc, only the traffic cars sadly wont get them
I also find the constant sideways drifting in this game slightly tedious. It's still a contender for my favorite arcade racing game though, the others being Daytona 1&2, Sega Rally 1&2, Ferrari F355 with three monitors and the sit-down deluxe version of Outrun 1. "Arcade racers" in general would be a wider term and would include console-only games as well.
For me the drift makes the game :)

Btw, Is there a way to play this game above 60 fps to mitigate the crappy motion resolution of digital displays? Only semi-solution I can think of is enabling BFI on RetroArch using PCSX2 or PPSSPP cores. But then you miss the extras that the PC version brings.

I have the delisted PS3 version, the PSP version and the Xbox version. As far as I know the Japanese Xbox original version is the one with most content and includes the Scud race map. This was omitted in most other versions. Is it in the Lindbergh version?

Having played a ton of PC & Arcade.. can say there are MANY differences; especially in HEART ATTACK MODE
one that comes to mind is the arcade needing you to be drifting for RUN THREW COLOUR... the PC doesn't require this, caught me up once & destroyed an Arcade run.

Lindberg is an arcade board. It’s basically a PC in a box but it’s for arcades
I always get confused about the outrun 2 cabinets. The US 4:3 crt twin always had a wood cabinet with sun-faded marquee. The European version, has the nicer cabinets with molded platic sides. What cabinets were the later versions in?
They were in special cabs with quasi full sized car plastic shells. Google OutRun SD SPX cab on google images
Outrun 2SP on the Lindbergh hardware was exclusively in a super deluxe cabinet. You would know one when you see it. It's basically an amusement attraction you play.

"The best camera is the one you have with you." True for Outrun too. PSP version is best version. But Outrun 2 is good enough to be worth having both a portable and dedicated home setup. I would absolutely invest in putting together a sit-down cab PC rig to do it justice, if I had the cash and space.

Have you ever tried the fxt mod? Its my favorite way to play with a wheel. It enhances the game and adds arcade mode and improves the force feedback. Also i noticed on my version i have to manually edit the config to turn on vsync. Which makes it so much smoother.
Also check out the outrun online release on the ps3 it seems like it might be quite close to the arcade

I still think it was worth dropping one line in noting the PC version's networking is an issue. Must be more ppl than just me watching your chan who have a side-by-side setup. But then again, if they do they probably already know everything they need to about Outrun 2. As you note, it's top tier :)

I suspect that your theory on the color difference is right about the multiple GPU targets This is something I have noticed for decades, while in theory these things should be the same, there is just a very slight change based on the hardware. A classic example is that there is just nothing the same as the Atari PC color pallets - they just pop!

It had some effects missing.
So, i claim the best version outside Arcade on home console is original XBOX -release of OutRun 2, on regions were cheat codes work, and Daytona 2 + Scud Races are included.
It is also interesting that there are certain huge graphical differences as well between OutRun 2 -regions.
I'm currently playing on PS2 remake of original OutRun. Pretty good actually.
The nice thing is that every version is good because it’s all still OutRun 2
A testament to how absolutely amazing this game is, I have only ever played the PSP version, and that is where my love for this title was formed. That rather sorry analog nub of the PSP was how I had to play for years, and I still found it to be exceptional, then once I hacked my Vita, then the game truly went to the next level. As now the game looked better, sounded better, and best of all it now played better with an actual analog stick. And yeah, by no means was the PSP game bad, as I now have a Steam Deck and can play this game in better ways, and I still play the PSP version on my Vita regularly as if it ain't broke, why fix it?

@@VideoGameEsoterica As much as I loved the OG arcade game of the 80's, due to the 3D graphics, Ferrari Testarossa, and of course the amazing music, I never enjoyed it much, as it was hard as nails. But with Outrun 2, everything was much improved and taken to a whole other level, and the gameplay is just perfection. Yep, no complaints from me.

I have all the Outrun 2 versions I think in my self made Cab builds and yes it is the greatest Arcade Racing game ever even eclipsing the original which was great of course and yes I do play with a wheel too, although .......... The excellent Arcade Outrun 2 SPX is awesome it`s also too easy and so I suggest that anyone playing it on the teknoparrot emulator go into the operator settings and at the least set the difficulty to at least hard or very hard to actually be challenged if they wanna put some real time into the game and have more fun in the longrun

The OG Xbox version is actiually the most vibrant one. It's essentially Chihiro lighting with very slight texture dowgrades here and there. I'm not quite sure about lindbergh but I think even this version is inferior in terms of lighting compared to XBox or at least not better.. The PC version though is the worst. The arch at 3:47 is a good indicator how good the lighing works. On Xbox is really shiny. The PS2 version has also pretty close lighting.
It’s a fun look and with upscaling can be great. Just decent make the top tier for me

The first versions of Outrun 2 and Outrun 2 SP in 2004 were xbox-based. Chihiro is basically an xbox with 128mb ram and a Sega 512MB DIMM unit slapped on top. So the xbox version is pretty much arcade-perfect. Yeah Lindbergh version may be slightly better but most people won't notice. The PS3 version of Outrun 2 is also near perfect and is easily obtained just buy buying a PS3, flashing custom firmware and downloading the PSN game files (I bought a PS3 just for Time Crisis 4, HOTD4 and Outrun 2). There's also a PSN version of Daytona USA which plays exactly like the original. For an all-in-one game playing box the PS3 is a good choice when hacked.
Chihiro was an interesting board but also a bummer as it was the start of Sega not having their own unique arcade hardware
@@VideoGameEsoterica Lindberg came after Chihiro and is a unique Sega arcade board. It's heavily PC-based but it is a unique board and has a CF slot on it that the encrypted Linux OS boots from. But yeah I get what you mean. Even so the later Sega arcade systems are not exactly basic off-the-shelf PCs. Try to get a replacement motherboard for one and you'll see just how difficult and expensive it is ;-)
For me pc components = not super interesting. I love the days of bespoke silicon custom engineered for gaming in arcades.

I used to own the xbox version, along with halo,true crime streets of LA & project Gotham racing & superman the man of steel, i dont have it any more but I now have it for my ps2, I'm surprised how decent it looks on the ps2, but from what I can remember they cut back playing the ps2 version I think they cut back on the trees & some of the castle walls & arches were reduced? I could be wrong but I didn't notice much difference other than that I love my ps2 version, bye the way have you seen what frogbull has made for the Sega Saturn, he's made the arcade from shenmue for the Saturn! & everything works, you can actually play space harrier & hang on, & even that punch bag game works, you can see it running on the shenmue dojo channel or frogbulls channel from last week

If I had the real arcade cab, I'd choose that hands down, but otherwise it's the OGXB version, because the PC version doesn't have the same responsiveness as the arcade and XB versions, as well as native CRT support on the OGXB, plus the XB version has better audio than the PC one, emulated with TP has even more latency, canny wait for an FPGA version one day though, maybe a port to Replay OS with DynaRes 2.0 could tide us over till then.

I don't even know what a Lindbergh is (I didn't even know there was a second outrun 😅) but to my eyes it looks way better than PC..... PC looks squashed, overly sharp, slows down more, and the picture lacks a certain depth I can't describe because I don't know much about graphics. Whatever that Lindbergh is, it's rocking it.

i honestly just like the xbox version of OR2. I was disappointed by the tweaked mechanics of 2006c2c, despite the added content.
never really had much exposure to the arcade version of OR2 outside of a couple race sessions, never played the PC version... and never had the need to emulate when I was still playing my xbox.

But outrun 2 and SP actually run on the sega chihiro CD ROM base board which is based on Xbox architect, Outrun 2 SPDX runs on lingbergh. As for my favourite it’s always the arcade original but I found Xbox to be a very good close match to the original not unlike outrun 2006 where my copy of psp version ran at 30fps so I got rid of the game but ps2 version I can’t say as I never played it. I hope an outrun 3 comes out soon as it’s long overdue.

This game is great but it does have one noticeable flaw - the transitions between stages are those dull looking embankments, they kinda suck. O.G Outrun has those lovely stage change effects that fade in. Maybe loading / streaming is a restriction and they are there to disguise it?
100% it’s there to hide the loading zones between levels. Lots of assets to load into ram for the next area
