First time I've ever heard an actual, proper, mechanical explanation of how the overhand right is thrown. It blows my mind how boxing--whose totality of punches can be counted on two hands with a few fingers to spare--leaves some of its most important fundamentals to the imagination.
As a self-defense instructor I sincerely appreciate this explanation and demonstration. I particularly like this "hand drop" idea to introduce what our sensei calls "chambering the fist." I encourage viewers to open their mind to this coach's methods, rather than just rejecting what is unfamiliar. Release your ego before pressing play, because this man has real knowledge to share.
In fighting training and boxing rejecting what's unfamiliar is exactly how you start to integrate the concepts and fundamentals inside your muscle memory nobody can throw a perfect boxing left hook by instinct you have to redevelop your instinct anyone not capable of listening to a coach first before forming their opinion is not worthy of being a fighter
I am grateful I'm able to have this information on youtube from you I have always found myself having confusions with the overhand right and everytime I do this video helps me
And the light switch goes on. Explained in an easy to understand manner complete with visual demonstration. I actually "get it" and that's a significant step forward. Thanks, Coach A.
I threw an overhand using those mechanics - which I mostly agree with - and snapped the first two metatarsals. I now put a little flex in my wrist to ensure the knuckles hit at 90 degree angle. Anything less than 90 degrees on contact puts lateral strain on those bones.
@@alr1419 strike so the first two knuckles hit AND so the direction of force is straight through the target. I hit with the direction of force on an angle (sort of pulling toward me instead of straight through) and the last two metatarsals (not first two) snapped cleanly. This can happen with hooks, overhangs, uppercut - basically any circular strike - that doesn't hit flush with the target. Most good strikers can punch harder than the human hand bones are able to withstand - why many people break their hand when they punch someone in the head.
Everyone is a trainer now days but not enough teachers. Thanks coach! Was throwing mine wrong for over 10 yrs! This made a huge difference! Feels a lot better throwing the overhand right. Subscribed!
I second this comment, there's a guy who I spar with when I am on the ropes he takes on a square stance and go crazy with wild hooks and uppercuts how do I escape that without going for the clinch?
Coach Clyde Leto , Buffalo NY. Coach Anthony, there are coaches( even those who fought at the pro level) that SHOW their students or amatuers how to do certain things, & then there are coaches who actually break it down & TEACH it. You are a TEACHER!!!!!!!
Love you coach.. I was from muay thai background.. Recently I switched to boxing.. I am learning a lot of techniques from you.. Helping me to spar well..
Coach Anthony. You are a legend. Thanks for another great video. Eddie Chambers got that crazy power as well. You two make a good team. Keep the videos coming. 👍🏾
Turn the hand befofe it connects. Got it. That was the one puzzle piece I was always missing. Never used the punch cause it didn't feel right in the shoulder. Feels alot better. I see where the power comes from. Thanks for the tip.
luv it... i think i would turn the body with the drop to keep the hand close to the body and then leave the hand behind as i open the body to swing up and over.... so my punch doesn't become a two step movement.... thanks for the vid!
My last amateur fight was before years all fighters declined fighting me and the fighter was suppose to fight me withdrew and declared me as winner with mini medal, beside muay thai i add hoi jean mo sol and kyokushin karate to condition the body which is very important element i'm 31 years old living in gulf i punch overhand in circle motion but i believe it's not safe to use comparability to hand drop method which better thank you very much for your help and effort coach Anthony
There’s a little snap movement between the wrist and elbows where if you time it right and spin at the last millisecond its like a bullet and it launches closer and faster. I love the way you rotate in that speed, mine is closer range though. Maybe you’d call that a different punch but there’s something super similar I do that leaves less space open and twitches faster. It doesn’t look or feel how one would expect if you go as fast as you can humanly go, it almost looks like some tekken shit. I got short little thick Italian arms though so it can be different world.
Could you also do a video (for beginners) on how to better see punches comming? Have a hard time looking at the schouders since the cloves occupy my vision often
Thank you Coach Anthony! You are one of my top 3 online coaches. In future videos, can you please cover: defensive footwork, tall outside counterpunching fighter vs short explosive pressure fighter, feints & setups, southpaw tactics. Thank you again!
i think i have an overhand with some decent power, however i have some trouble nailing the form. it's quite inconsistent , however this video really helped, thank you!
The best power punch for a shorter fighter besides the hook. They don't see it coming and they get a little more power from a looping right to the head than a strait one in my opinion when your shorter.
Coach Anthony, I’d really love to see a Video that covers the set ups and a few tips regarding the Body Jab, I use it starting from head faints, but would love to learn more. Thanks.
Its crazy how after years of training one end up studying the tecniques of the most untechnical and common haymaker punch thrown anywhere bc of the valuable aplications
In my opinion, and from my personal experience, it's easier to jab to the body first. Jabbing to the body puts you in position to throw it without getting clipped in an exchange. Another way to land that shot is to throw the right hand to the body a few times first getting your opponent use to seeing you change levels to go to the body... when it's time for you to throw the overhand right, he'll think you're going to the body. Also, throwing it over your opponents jab is great especially when he's circling towards your overhand
Good work coavh Anthony and Eddie, i t aught my lil girl the OH right and she still uses it when opponents have a lazy jab return, it works every time, an coz her style is peekaboo it rolls nice
Hey coach can you explain how to "SNAP" your punches or shoulder & put up drills to practice this.i heard Emanuel steward, kevin rooney,Mike tyson,& cus d'amato talk about it dont know what it means besides similarity to a "whip"
I'm friends with a fighter by the name of Mighty Mo and I asked him one day what his favorite combo was and he told me the overhand right left hook for me it used to be the right cross and left hook but now as I'm getting a little older and putting on more muscle I like the overhand right left hook and sometimes I finish it with the right straight just to close the line up better of course getting off the center line after I finish with the combo either way it would be nice to see what the coach has to say I haven't watched the video yet maybe it's a lesson already in there
Thank you for this video coach. This punch is the most difficult for me to throw and also to defend. Would love to see how you would practice it on the heavy bag and different ways to defend against it.
Yes! coach! want to see him again and wanna learn on how to time and land more punches on aggressive boxer who uses hooks and uppercut a lot! in a fight!?.
How does this guy teach better techniques online than most gyms .
Thank you

Man, coach is just real smooth.
I really like how you explained the hand drop concept just to teach the motions, it breaks it down real good to position for the real shots! 👌
screw those “experts”, you explained this in the most very effective way. learned it to you more than the gym

Could you elaborate? Are you saying to flex the wrist downward so the front two knuckles are the first point of contact?

Great example of the overhand right povetkin vs price. Left hook to the stomach and overhand right. Great example coach!
It was a swing, not overhand. Because punch with swing.
this man is the jewel of boxing coaching.
Coach. I look to constructively critique coaches when it comes to boxing. But dude. Your method is amazing. Keep up your fantastic work.

Coach Anthony is the man. Eddie Chambers definitely should come back!
Good fight Eddie against Klitschko . Very impressive, Klitschko was at his peak then
throwing the overhand rt is basically like throwing a baseball from a pitcher's mound. it is the same form and technique.
Yep, Tony Ferguson trained is over right by pitching baseballs.
Thats how I learned it. Grabbed a pear of socks and tried to throw it through the ground in front of my lead leg
we have missed him. coaching us with a Eddie is +200%. thanks for sharing. Cyprus.

A bit late to the show but Eddie -- go for it man!!! You got them reflexes and instincts you can hardly teach. Doooo ittttt!!!!

Thanks Coach! Nobody has taught me that punch. Often forgotten. Nice little surprise punch to keep in my back pocket. Thanks for breaking it down!
Great... There's no any better explanation that can beat that. Thanks CA, i was really struggling with it even if there are open opportunities to hit
Coach Clyde Leto, Buffalo NY. Exactly the way I teach the overhand right.
I used an overhand right or a right cross plenty of times as a counter shot, it usually knocks them out or give them a busted nose
The best power punch for a shorter fighter besides the hook. They don't see it coming and they get a little more power from a looping right to the head than a strait one in my opinion when your shorter.

Dont push on your punches just like snap it out likes whip. Once the punch is preformed you bring it right back to pushing just a quick bang

Thanks brother excellent explanation of the overhand right from Ocala Florida peace:-)
