    I think this is based off of how highly someone feels about themselves. An insecure person is way more likely to conform than someone who's genuinely confident within themselves. I've had both situations where I've answered honestly against odds and then situations where I've also conformed. The only thing that seemed to influence both decisions was how smart or dumb I thought the people around me were. I conformed to individuals who I thought were way smarter than me, and I went against those I thought to be dumb. (btw I am also a highly insecure person)

    I didn't take psych/socio courses and scored really well on this portion of the mcat due to Khan videos!! my practice tests were very good. i would have liked to see more practice passages from khan academy that resemble more real mcat

    These studies are extremely relevant today. Especially in terms of the gender debate.

    This was done to me in 4th grade under the guise of a :"peer pressure" test. and I Never conformed or agreed with the "group" think, I stayed with the facts I knew to be true based on my perceptions. Explains a lot...and I still wont shut up and agree to lies!

  • @jasoneggerman

    The 37% statistic is misrepresented. That figure, 37% is the overall percentage of the time that the participants went along with the group. (Total number of times people conformed divided by total number of opportunities to conform). It would be more correct to say that "on average" people conformed and went along with the group 37% of the time.

      There's a lot of omissions in her explanation here. And, oddly enough, Wikipedia has updated over the years totally minimizing to ignoring the experiment being filmed in the 70s. Even more reason to note how relevant this was 20 years after and today.

    In class, I had multiple choice questions and I worked in groups. I didn't conform to their answer because I got no shame and they didn't know what they were doing.

    It is very interesting that the interpretation of the experiment is also a conformity test in that no one stands up to deny the conclusions.

    • @InvictusBeauty

      Was done to me in 4th grade under the guise/lie that it was a "peer pressure" test. I've always stood up and refused to accept the lies. , and I always will, and for that I catch a lot of hell especially in today's society, and that's ok, just reinforces my strength of courage and conviction for what I know to be true based on My own perceptions. I do not subscribe to nonsense- ie.. the "woke" or group think sheeple. Another aspect to consider -rh-? I'm not sure if maybe this was the reason to single certain people out for the experiment?

    Isnt this what happened in Germany during WW2? They marketed the jwish people as bad, so the whole country conformed? I think this could very easily be done in most countries. You can see it done in politics and over the News.

    A couple things: good point about uni students inherent suspicion of the purpose of a random study, i've never been to uni, but don't doubt it could color participants expectation to suppose some deeper meaning/level to it, suggesting a need to 'stick it out' and follow illogical suggestions until revealed; and other than ruling that out, it seems the main requirement of ensuring a scientifically uncolored methodology, would be to ensure all participants felt completely assured of anonymity, as i suspect the actual reason the test subjects conformed, may have been because they semi-consciously reasoned, to contradict other participants acting illogically, could mean embarrassing people inclined to other illogical behavior like spite, who could then become dangerous enemies, thus conformed out of self preservation alone.

    I am not sure with the outlined problems of the studies. Why is it a bad thing of having people of the same age, gender and somewhat socioeconomic status if you are testing for the conformity in a group? Why would you add additional options such as gender and etc. just to factor in that information and have more variables? I think the experiment was set up well.

    • @Black_pearl_adrift
      @Black_pearl_adrift 4 года назад +1

      Well in general if were doing tests to explain human behavior having a varied group of people mimics real life fairly well. In today's world you're not likely to find yourself just in a group of people with toure same gender race or age.
      Interestingly, minority groups (Ie. People with a different sexual preference than the group) in real life face having to be "non-conforming" it might have yielded interesting resaults

      it means anything that can affect the results of the experiment, such as the notice, the weather, the place, that's why lab experiments are really good to cease them but this makes it to lack from ecological validity
