      @@pollywog7625 well, it's completely natural to be attracted to a woman's voice. Thats how nature is. Sounds and appearances attract one another within species. Thats why mating calls are a thing for some animals. Were basically civilized animals. So shame on you for trying to shame someone for their natural instincts. However we ARE civilized animals. So the original commenter should have just kept the comments about her voice to themselves.

    Idk how to explain this but I have been watching a large enough volume of Godier's videos for a substantial amount of time now and i trust this man, I care for this man, and I see him as a mentor in some ways since I don't have that in my own life much. I have always been a writer and a deep lover of space since I was a kid and his videos have reignated certain passions I had previously mourned losing as my life developed. I am encouraged by how many different people and groups are studying exoplanets and exobiology. Only 50 years ago, it was all just science fiction. In just my lifetime, we've gone from ridicule to "why haven't you found more?" I am curious as to how specific you can get in the red-shift exploration and how specific you might want to get. I know that different types of plants have different IR signatures. Also, using the Carl Sagan model of study (turning your sensors back onto the Earth), we not only have a model for IR detection, but can reverse engineer that because we know the actual result. The study process is verifiable based upon our known bio-parameters. But in this case, if you are looking for a forest, you might miss a tree. Anyway, another great discussion. Hi Eryn, good catch on that great pic.

      Absolutely, it's a super exciting time in the _incredibly long history_ (and pre-history) of humanity...and we got lucky enough to be gifted our consciousnesses by the Universe (which *we* fundamentally *are,* as in, we human beings aren't a _part_ of the Universe, we ARE the Universe, just as the Universe is us) at a time that lets us witness, and be a part of this snapshot in time.
      We have all of our collective and individual struggles to deal with while we're here, there's no doubt about that, and I hope we continue (I know we will) to help and support more and more of each other as we're facing the huge political, economic, and environmental challenges of our time. I just hope that we never forget to look up from time to time.

    i would say if we ever "encounter" life outside our planet it will be either a. they are 2-3k years (god help us not more) ahead of us and pray they are peaceful because they find us.
    or b. we think it may exist because we continue to use "our" model....because it's the only model we know to exist...so we focus on it. We keep looking for us...we should be focusing on them. :D
    Edit...thats the fun part. we keep looking for us and i get it...but either we are absolutely unique or we are not. We are very special...or we are not. Hard pill to choose. That or we are lazy with no imagination (sorry hard truths). If you focus on us...it's because we are special and unique. Because to be fair, we are until proven otherwise. ...and that's why we keep looking for us. To prove we are not special or unique.

      Who is "they"? The UFO community can't agree on what "they" are. It ranges from UFOs being paranormal ghost lights, demons, aliens, ultra terrestrials, skin walkers and the crowd that thinks the only way to interact with aliens is by ingesting DMT. Yet in over 70 years of reports, no one has produced any smoking gun evidence. That's what we're waiting for. We need more than anecdotal evidence to conclude anything.

    The idea of life on Earth is ridiculous, not only does it have an atmosphere filtering out high energy photons, it has a magnetic field that deflects high energy particles. How would life energize it's crystalline structures on such a planet? The professor lashed out at the student's audio antennae with a jagged tentacle. Earth was not even tidally locked, the inconsistency of starlight would make the simplest of life a torturous ordeal. The professor remained confident that no life existed on that cold inhospitable planet.

    Q: Suppose, hypothetically, there is an "us" currently living on Proxima B. I.e., a civ. at exactly the same tech level as us. They launched their JWST, which is *exactly* identical to ours, just a few years earlier. If they've pointed it at our sun, what do they see, w.r.t. bio-signatures and/or techno-signatures?
    I mean, on a scale from...
    1: "There's a planet about the same size as ours, which *might* have liquid water!"
    To 10: "There's all this radio noise in a few specific frequency bands... Huh, seems they've standardized on GSM and now the majority of their smartphones are using that instead of CDMA!"
    To 12: "Geez, that lunatic is *still* saying he won the election two transits ago!"
    ...what would our endoplanet look like, as seen from there with exactly the same instruments?

    • @bertjilk3456
      @bertjilk3456 Год назад

      JWST doesn't detect radio signals, you need a radio telescope for that. And, I believe most of our radio transmissions are too weak to be detectable above our sun's radio noise (using detection equipment similar to our own current tech). They might pick up some of our strongest radar transmissions, but not using their JWST.
      I'm no expert, but from what I understand, their JWST could tell them the composition of our atmosphere (including biomarkers), and potentially even that we have plant life (the topic of this video). Beyond that, I'm not sure how much more they would learn. So, maybe a 2 or 3 on your scale. I think they would see enough to convince them that earth has life (cue monumental celebrations) and that they need new/better technologies to take a closer look. Pretty much exactly what would happen here.

    We're looking for alien life on different planets, yet we are putting the constraints of our life upon what we look for. Which version of Life on our planet are we looking for? Is it what's at the poles, is it what's at the equator, or is it the temperate zones, are we looking for high altitude or low altitude? We are looking for our industrial pollution? Maybe they're industrial pollution looks completely different from ours. Alien life is ALIEN to us, unless your looking for us on other worlds. Then it falls back to which climate zone are you looking for.

    • @williamblack4006
      @williamblack4006 Год назад

      @ Kal Random, we are looking for atmospheric gasses -- i.e. methane, or oxygen. Earth's atmosphere is in dis-equilibrium, it has a very high oxygen content, much more oxygen than it should have -- this is due to the metabolism of plant-life.
      Climate zones have nothing to do with it.

    • @bobsmith-hd2zr
      @bobsmith-hd2zr Год назад

      The only way that would be even possible is if we just happen to be orbiting between the sun and their eyes. That is very unlikely.
      The only way we would be able to see earth's atmospheric composition is if we just so happen to see a transit, and that only happens once a year... So they would have to be watching for us year after year. Waiting for us to transit in front of the sun.
      so yes? unlikely but possible
      This is why we currently mostly detect giant planets orbiting near their stars. Big and with orbital periods short enough that if we look at the star for a few days we will se something change. These hot Jupiters tend to be way closer to their stars than mercury is to ours.
      So they would see something is weird in our atmosphere using spectroscopy. But if they/us are further than a few hundred light years we would only see bio signatures not techno signatures,

But the History Channel used to have a show called "Life After People", where they said our radio signals break up and become just static after about two light years. "As radio waves travel outward from their source - a transmitter - they lose intensity, and fast. The intensity of radio waves over distance obeys the inverse-square law, which states that intensity is inversely proportional to the square of the distance from a source.
      Think of it this way: double the distance, and you get four times less power. This works the other way around, too, and is crucial to the point we're trying to get across here: halve distance, and received power is increased four times over. So, while you can't always have the freedom to move a receiver as close as you want, shortening the distance by just a few inches can counterintuitively produce dramatically better signal, because of the inverse-square relationship and the capture effect."
      at some point, i dont remember the distance, the radio waves become over-powered and indistinguishable from the back ground radiation from the big bang. Also this would depend on the strength of the signal so a very weak radio signal like a low power radio antenna is not going to go out very far.
      I think bio signatures in the atmosphere are what would betray our existence not radio signals.

      Ordinary broadcasts, like AM and shortwave are mostly absorbed before they even leave our atmosphere, so yes, before WWII, our radio signals are too weak to be detected by current known detection methods. However, after WWII when high powered, higher frequency military radars were developed using highly directional antennas which beam megawatt pulses that pass right through our atmosphere. These signals are what would give our location away at much greater distances. Using signal processing, which greatly reduces the noise floor because natural noise cancels itself out over time (as many positive peaks as negative peaks), whereas man made signals don't. This method of detecting signals well below the noise floor, correlation, has been used at least as far as the sixties, when computers were available. One BBC science article says they can be detected out to 60 light years. So if we or alien civilizations are searching for other technological civilizations using radio methods, then that would be our best bet, rather than ordinary radio broadcasts. And even then, the time period of a civilization using that sort of technology, would be less than 100 years, probably, before they have moved on to better technology. So the window timeframe would be quite small, as well.
