I hope the Chrysler Engineer that designed this battery location learns what Hell is. I have had two Journeys and the battery replacement is close to hell. I had a 2004 Dodge Stratus that had its battery in the same place BUT FCA used SIDE Terminals on the battery and that worked a lot better than the top terminals on the Journey's.

Does anyone know if there is a special reset process if you end up having to buy a new negative terminal? My son-in-law accidentally broke the sensor on that terminal and so we had to order a new terminal. We have it all put together and installed, and at first the dome lights came on, but when we tried to start it we just heard a loud click and everything died again.
Fack. I just finished swapping batteries in my 2015 dodge journey. What a giant pain in the ass. In the winter too. One of the wheel lug nuts broke. Clips were a pain. The Battery mount rod nut was seized. Couldn't do heat and beat because of all the wires. Ended up just snapping off the bolt. Battery pan was full of ice. I had to wire the new battery in with the top mounting bracket. She fired up first try once the new battery was hooked up, though, so at least that part went smooth. Oh and my hands are torn up. But like the old timers say, "if you don't bleed by the time you finish the job, you did it wrong."
yes it IS a stupid place for the battery, but once past that, I had to have an AGM and the only one I could find in Canada in group sizes 26, 75/86 was an Odyssey for almost $500cdn plus $100 shipping. There were many other sizes at around the $200-50 range, but not the one I needed for OEM measurement's of 9 1/16" L x 6 13/16 W x 8" H. So I found a group 35 that would fit perfect, BUT it's a right hand positive, and Journey's need a left hand positive. I thought of buying it and just turning it around, but this one had downward indented posts and I didn't think the add battery monitor on the ground would clear it enough. Then I found a group 34 at Canadian Tire with very close measurements of 10"L on the bottom, 6 3/4" W and 8" H. I had already measured the battery tray and figured it would work, so I bought one. In the end it took a "little" bit of adjusting, but I got it in nicely! I had to remove the battery handle and sheer off the holder for it on the ground side. Then I cut the rounded corners off the battery tray with a grinder in seconds, painted the bare metal and the battery fit in perfectly. The only other issue I had was getting the battery in WITH the top holder in place already (couldn't get it in after). So I tied a string to it from above and held it there in place while I put the battery in it's place. The battery terminals were never an issue as I found a nice place to push the positive one up in place out of the way and it held both of them up out of the way very nicely :)

What could be the problem? excuse me for my english
Only on the journey is this a problem. Dealer charges an arm and a leg to install a new one. You can put a bigger battery in though. Worst problem is the battery never gets warm in our canadian winters. I have to put a new one in every 24-36 months, but they are under warranty.
I’m going through this now.. I am trying to charge my battery but cannot get it out..and I’m assuming you cannot charge battery from the jumper piece on top😩dumbest thing ever
Hit a deer recently and bumper was opened up and I saw this battery. was really thrown off. Getting it checked to make sure it’s still properly secure.
I don’t know if anyone has made this comment but I just took the battery out of my 2019 dodge journey and instead of removing the tires I just losing the bumper. There were two screws that held the bumper up. Once I took those out I had access to the battery. I took the positive side off and put two extender on my socket and went from there top for the negative side and then pulled the battery out.
Several videos.... However they have various sequence of events, some of which are perhaps not "best practice"... Ideal #1 Spray the bracket nut and battery terminals with "Easing Fluid of you Choice".... #2. Remove the small electrical plug/socket on the Negative/Chassis Ground, while its "mate" is still attached and firm. #3 Remove the bolt holding the Negative/Chassis Ground cable to the bracket attached to the battery NEG post. Move the cables away from the battery and hold them clear with string/rope/clip (whatever)..... #4 Remove the bolt holding Positive/Red cable to the bracket attached to the POS battery post. Move the cable away from the battery and hold clear as per what was done with the Negative cable. #5... Another spray of "Easing Fluid of you Choice" to the nut at the top of the rod on the "hold down bracket"... Try to undo the nut, if it moves at all, then reverse direction (tighten) slightly and respray, then try and undo again.. It can be reached from above with a long extension bar. Try forward and back and spray to ease the nut off... Note 1:: If the battery terminal bolts are tight it's easier to work them loose without the battery dancing around. Note 2:: With the battery disconnected and the cables out of the way there is far less chance of the long extension bar causing a short between vehicle body and POS battery terminal. Note 3:: With the cables secured out of the way it is easier to "jiggle/juggle" the battery out. Clean it all up. Run the nuts on the various bolts, wire brush and lubricant.... And: If you are reading this then you are a DIY mechanic... Another 10-15 + minutes is not the end of the world...
Totally agree, this is the stupidest design, really pain in the ass, my nuts are rusted, took me hours to take it off, no use, have to cut part of the bracket. Dodge sucks
Thanks… ps my Wife’s ORIGINAL battery just went DEAD ((* 2015 Journey 4 CYL): see my experiences…Actually, my NOCO starts it , but undertook terminals were initially DIRTY!! ( my truck , next parking spot , took off @-31 to -34F, & took her to Work) …
Its 10mm for the terminals and 12mm for the bracket and if the terminals are closer together as some group 26s are you will need to chop off some material on the hold down bracket to make room for the terminals. Good luck yall and screw you mopar engineers!
The stupid thing is, not all Dodge vehicles are like this. The Charger from around the same model year has it in the trunk. The Avenger had the battery in the same location though. So much to dislike about the Jouney.
I bought a used dodge it died on me and my dad had to remove the tire to change the battery late at night....took 2 hours. Needless to say I can't wait to get rid of this car I've had 4 months, got a new battery and alternator and it still died on me. I bought it for 12k and kbb says it's worth 8k......worst car purchase I've ever made....never again. My brother has a checy traverse and his battery is under the backseat. When did these car makers start putting these batteries in weird unreachable spots. Makes 0 sense
I just did one of these today. Worst battery I have ever changed out of anything that uses a battery. I've even changed iphone batteries. Never again Dodge, never again.
Seem like those engineers had been smoking pot again 😂😂. Of all the things you could put there to save space they had to put most often replaced part of the car. It’s ok if you have Lithium Iron Phosphate which would literally last the life of the car but a damn lead acid battery goes bad in 2-3 years

Do you really have to take the wheel off ? Can’t you just turn the wheel and have a little room ?
This is why you look under the hood before buying vehicles!!!! LOL!
thanks...I'm sure someone had a reason for putting the battery there, but why is beyond me
To watch the world burn. And ensure that customers don't ever buy another Dodge
Thnx
It's in the same location as the first gen 200's battery.
Amen
Pretty smart to hide from some thieves but also pretty dumb place for collisions
Totally agree, this is the stupidest design, really pain in the ass, my nuts are rusted, took me hours to take it off, no use, have to cut part of the bracket. Dodge sucks
the bracket is where I got stuck, thats the instruction I'm looking for
My nuts got rusty just watching this video....Jeezu !
That's ridiculous! My wife owns a 2018 Journey.
Thanks… ps my Wife’s ORIGINAL battery just went DEAD ((* 2015 Journey 4 CYL): see my experiences…Actually, my NOCO starts it , but undertook terminals were initially DIRTY!! ( my truck , next parking spot , took off @-31 to -34F, & took her to Work) …
You didn't show how to remove or replace the RETAINING BRACKET
I don't know whats worse, the location of the battery or the fact you bought a Dodge Journey.
You kind of forgot to show how to do the work, which is the point of this wasn’t it?
Mine is dead rite now in my driveway and I don't want to do it
This is enough to make me pass on the Journey. It's a headache i don't need🤦🏽♂️
Omg! My ride is making a clicking noise so im thinking its the battery. Sucks!
Yes check the connections first, but if they are tight I would say you're right!
You know what. I think I'm getting rid of my journey😂
I want to punch the engineer in the face for putting this battery here 🙂 took about a hour and many scratches
I just did one of these today. Worst battery I have ever changed out of anything that uses a battery. I've even changed iphone batteries. Never again Dodge, never again.
I'll never buy a dodge ever again because of this.
Seem like those engineers had been smoking pot again 😂😂. Of all the things you could put there to save space they had to put most often replaced part of the car. It’s ok if you have Lithium Iron Phosphate which would literally last the life of the car but a damn lead acid battery goes bad in 2-3 years
working on this at work rn and who the fuck decided to put a battery here
Why not do a video showing the entire process . I’m having problems getting the retainers out of the shielding. You get a thumbs down from me.
WHAT THE FUCK !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Nice video good info but these assholes at Dodge need to be fired for this design worst ever but thanks again
Dodge Journey dumbness battery location design idea ever! Rather get rid of that car cuz is so cheap designed
Whoever came up with this should be in prison.
$150 that’s cheap I just paid $239.00
I hate Chrysler products especially the journey 😒
Not looking forward to doing this!! Smdh!! I’d like to smack the design tech at Dodge!!
Look no further to answer the question why smart people buy Asian vehicles.
I will never buy another Dodge Journey
Thanks, man. Pain in the ass, crap design. All designed to cause us to have to get service even in basic sh*t. Pathetic.
Who ever designed the pice of shit should get fired.
That shit is fd up wtf
lol
Its a dodge tesla😂
This is sad 😂😂
Journey far far the worst vehicle ever
So dumb
Must be "woke" engineering 🤣 Glad Trump is back 🎉
Thank you, good Work… my 96,000 mi+, 2015 Journey/4 Cyl not start today( lower than 30 below ZERO AT 8am, HELENA Valley MT)**** just trying my NOCO **BOOST, LITHIUM STARTER, BUT CANNOT get “ contact metal “ on leads In Engine Bay, etc ( still -17 or colder ), May wait ..
