When stringing into Crush, you can use it in any direction you input. This is part of what makes the ZR>A combo so safe. The Backslam is also easier to use because you can readjust your direction with a Crush incase you end up in an awkward position.
Crush and Double Swing both have this property, and it's no coincidence that these are the A and X+A moves that are used out of both Backwards Swing and Perform. Crush will read your directional input when you press A to determine which direction to face. Double Swing is a bit more complicated. The directional input when you press X+A determines which version of the attack you use: holding left will result in the attack hitting from right to left, whereas any other input or no input will result in the attack hitting from left to right. If you hold the same direction until the first swing, you will end up facing that direction at the end of the attack. If you initiated the attack holding one direction, but change direction or release the directional input before the first swing, you will end up facing forward at the end of the attack. If you initiated the attack not holding a direction and then hold a direction before the first swing, you will end up facing that direction at the end of the attack, but only if the direction is to the right of your hunter's original direction (you can turn up to 179 degrees to the right, though).
@@william_sun Yup, the Double Swing makes it a good follow up to correct your direction after a Backslam. You don't get the same safe precision of the Crush, but you do end up playing 2 green notes.

Thanks for the very easy explanation of the basic kit for HH Gaijin. A lil addendum for your part at 6:43 about draw attacks. While yes, the normal X, A, and X+A inputs are a 2 step process for hunters to choose which note they want to start with, they can also initiate a draw attack by doing a perform (ZR) while the weapon is sheathed (in the event of a wirefall or a change of location) just a lil something that can also be done that might've been missed, I'm not too sure how many hunters actually engage the monsters with a perform but its there (prob more useful when your get the 1st switch skill so you can preload b4 fighting the monster, which wouldn't be mentioned this video)
This type of tutorial is pretty neat. The MH GenU tutorials were often really long, because they included so much stuff about every weapon. Which made understanding everything in one go almost impossible and looking for specific things after trying out the weapon a chore. I don't know how many times I heard the "This is my Generations tutorial, but you can find the new Styles and Arts later in the video" intro while looking for the part I wanted to rewatch :D
Fantastic HH guide; it matches a lot of what I've seen while playing HH in Rise. I missed this style of tutorial too. Looking forward to more weapon tutorials!
Great guide Gaijin Hunter! I've been using HH since Tri and this helped me grow into the big changes they did to HH in Rise. I've been enjoying using the Echo mode Switch Skill since it's closer to the older playstyle that I enjoy. I'm looking forward to your guide on the Switch Skills!
For new players to the series, I think they will really like hunting horn in rise. For me personally though (I'm a long time veteran and main of hunting horn) I really don't like hunting horn in rise, It's a bit to simplified for my liking. I think mhw and mhgu are the best versions of hunting horn. They're just as flashy and cool as rise but still complex. Just my opinion though, I'm not trying to spread hate. More hunting horn users, whether in rise or others, are always welcome.
So happy to see my HH tutorial up first! TYSM! I was hoping for some KO and Exhaust numbers xD but I'm guessing that's in a later video with songs etc xD
Thanks alot for another fantastic video and guide Gaijen. It's thanks to you years ago that I kept trying to learn old HH, until it eventually clicked, it's been one of my favourite weapons and adept HH in GU is my addiction. I've been so excited for the change but the hype died down after release. I kept looking at every guide to see if I'm missing something, or doing something wrong. I wanted to wait for your tutorial and here it is. I'm happy to say I'm no longer confused, but I'm really sad to realize that I absolutely do not like new HH. You yourself said that you could do whatever combos you like, and I really do not like that. if it all does similar damage with slightly different angles, I really don't see why I should care about doing the combos, which is something I loved about old horn. You have a few moves each with its own trajectory, but you have songs to guide which moves you plan to do next. And speaking of songs, the new song system is just sad to play with, I find myself doing one of each attack the perform, or magnificent trio, and violla all 4 songs! now what? it's so easy to keep the songs to the point where I don't see why they just don't become a permanent passive buff for you, that doesn't apply for active buffs like heals but they're also so easy it hardly matters. I really find myself finding no joy, challenge or satisfaction from mindless button mashing even after learning kick up and some other moves. no satisfaction from lining up songs and decking a wyvern in the face with a big recital hit, I miss strong perform attacks. by all means this is a success for the weapon, except for a few people like me. its great seeing this awesome weapon get the love it always deserved but I find myself not enjoying rise much as a whole because no weapon fills the void that HH once did. I've tried all weapons, I like most but none stand out. I waited for this guide to see one thing thay could change my mind but sadly no, this weapon is no longer for me. Hope everyone has an absolute blast dooting and booting. maybe a compromise with at least the singing system next game is enough for me, I'd hope but I'll be holding out for years.
Aaaah the Gaijin tutorials are back!!! Wohoooooo!! :D I missed them so much! Thank you for taking your time to create them. Even the presentations and intro are the same! This takes me back to the good ol' days of MH3G/U and MH4G/U
Amaizing video, short and to the point, very clear and well executed as always. Your videos were the ones that helped me to understand and play mh4u (my first one) so thanks for the thousands of hours of fun. The idea of separating the switch skills into another video seems great for new players but only time will tell. Meanwhile, only 2 notes (hehe). About the magnificent trio, the wording could be a little bit clearer about the need to play the 3 notes, it isn't clear that the 3 notes have to be in the "partiture", or whatever is called the 4 notes arrengement at the top, at the same time. Also, just as a personal preference I need to say that I liked better the cuts in your older videos, this style is more fluid but the cuts that you did in other guides helped a lot more to ilustrate what are you talking about in an specific moment, because when you don't know the weapon, some inputs aren't super clear (like the dual blades). The general timing you're using in this video seems ok but, again as a personal preference, I think it could be tighter. Other than that great video as always, and even if I know a lot more of this game, to this day your content is always helpful, enjoyable and a great inspiration. Thank you.
You also helped me to develop (for monsters hunter) and reinforce (to a lot of other games) the mentality of "play with the things that you have fun" that I have today. Thanks for that too.
@@KaiPerspective thanks for the feedback. The issue with the timing of stuff on screen vs what im saying ill try to improve. this was a result of doing the audio first. Good advice to split it up better though!
My little nephew has been playing with me this time around and I was debating getting super powerful and carrying him or finally learning hunting horn so thank you very much for this guide.
I've been enjoying the HH so much, it's the only weapon I've been using so far. I'm usually a SnS main but this generation has made HH flow so smoothly I can't resist the HH toot and bonk.
"Hunting horn has had a revamp and many quality of life focused improvements!" Outstanding "... and is shaping up to become one of the most popular weapons in the game!" Unfortunate
I’d love to run with a squad of all horns with different buffs. But most of the time u end up having a bunch of attack boost songs being played on top of each other.
Great tutorial! Adding Armor skill suggestions was a good call. I do think Switch skills should be part of the weapon tutorial. Feels incomplete without them.
"easy to use" can i have my engaging to use horn back eventually though? New horn just feels so dial-in ): hope they dont abandon old HH entirely in future installments. Even if the new one is more popular that doesn't mean people like the change, since it feels like a new weapon entirely to me. It'd be a first for them keeping all the changes in one title though haha.
thank you for the wonderful guide! I am a LS/GS user since previous iterations of monster hunter games and right now I wanna try something new and it will be hunting horn. :)
dude the hunting horn in rise rubs me the wrong way, it really feels like they mae it absurdly braindead, with tons of super armor, shockwave attacks literally headsniping for EZ KOs, your songs basically being playing without any input from you whatsoever, it really does everything for you with little space for placement, thinking or strategy... the complexity and thought that went behind the weapon is entirely gone and what's left is probably the easiest weapon in the game to both pick up and master...
So I love your videos and think this was very informative but I'd like to give a little feedback. I think for future weapons tutorials, covering switch skills in the main tutorial would probably be better. As an echo mode player, I won't lie I was pretty disappointed because I wanted to see if there were any echo exclusive combos or tech I hadn't picked up on yet but instead all I got was a tutorial for the mode I don't like. Idk if you plan on doing an expanded version of this similar to how your MHX/GU videos were just added to each other in the definitive editions, but I think whatever you do, it should all be in the same video eventually so new hunters can compare their options and at least be aware of them even if they haven't unlocked them yet. Like I said, I don't know how you plan to tackle it and I don't want you to do it all at once if all the extra content per video would burn you out obviously. I was just personally hoping to see your take on echo mode and whatever other switch skills there are that I haven't unlocked yet. Best wishes, thanks MH Dad.
After playing a lot of hunting horn in world, using this weapon in rise felt really awkward but simultaneously soo great. Its so fluent now, i havent used any other weapon in rise by now:D i love my doot stick
Not played rise yet since I didn’t own a switch, now it’s coming to Xbox I feel the need to watch these vids, it’s going to be weird not having to choose an opening to play your buffs, but think it might bring more players to HH as it’s such an underrated weapon
It’ll be interesting to see how this develops over the life of the game-what new songs will show up, will they add other switch skills outside of a major expansion, etc.
I'm absolutely in love with the HH in Rise, it's more fun to use than ever! Honestly, when I first saw the reveal, I did not dig the Slide Beat move at all. I thought the trade-off from losing your health just to tank through attacks for some hits is just not worth it, it feels suicidal even. But I was so wrong and it's a move I cannot live without now. It's so useful to close in on the monsters, especially the fast ones like Magnamalo that hopscotch all over the place and likes to spray its hellfire dust around, which I could just quickly bypass with the Slide Beat while aiming for the head at the same time. Also great for going through roars, so I don't even needs Earplugs skill or song for that. I still don't use Slide Beat to tank through attacks that much, but since you can quickly heal yourself back from such minor injuries, I still do it from time to time. However, I just wish they would let you remove just the "notes" in the HUD settings, because it's blocking the view a little and can get annoying at times. I know you can remove the "weapon info" but that removes everything, including the Magnificent Trio and Infernal Melody icons, which I still need to see when they're ready to be used. I just don't need the notes because they're easy to remember. I really hope Capcom can make this minor adjustment that will vastly improve the HH's usage by miles at some point.
I love the hunting horn I Main it for the game I think my favourite build I made so far is. Attack boost level 7 Critical eye level 4 Weakness Exploit level 3 Plus I'm using the rampage hunting horn with the attack up an infinity up. So I get up to 90% affinity! But wait there's more!!! I also have stamina thief level 3 Slugger level 3 And of course Horn meister I all so made it a paralysis So I can do great damage, Stun, exhaust and paralyse Monsters, So I can mobilise a monster pretty good, And at the same time buff the attack infinity power of all the other players. I mean what more could you ask for!
Played HH for all of world, and it's kind of nice to see what they did with infernal melody here. It makes me think there will be no Atk up XL song, which in world end game it kind of felt like if your horn didn't have it, that horn was instantly considered useless.
Worth noting, Multi-crush -> Kick Up -> Multi-crush is also an infinite combo. Eats through sharpness like nothing else, but at least that little poke does some cutting damage if a tail is close to coming off.
For elemental damage or status effect, you'll want a similar combo to the one at 3:10, but replace the Left Swing with a Kick Up(A). It's the same number of hits in less time, so for fixed values like element and status, it's a bit better. The potentially infinite combo goes: Forward Smash->Kick Up->Multi-crush Forward X->A->X
I’ve never been good at the Hunting Horn at all, even when MHW/Iceborne came along. I was just so terrible at it, but I always held deep respect for Hunting Horn mains and rejoice every time I end up hunting with anyone who wields a Hunting Horn because I felt they made the hunts smoother and fun. And it’s always sad to see them go afterwards. But now I’m considering picking up a Hunting Horn and practice in the training area until I can finally get a feel. Maybe, I might finally be able to pick it up even a little bit.
5:28 "You don't need to have all three music notes on the music staff, either" - not quite. The trigger for readying the Magnificent Trio is for all three colour notes to be on the music staff simultaneously at any one point. If the newest note pushes one of the other colours off the staff entirely, you don't ready the Magnificent Trio, even if you would have otherwise played every note colour. Not that this is a problem or makes it much harder to work with, granted. But it's worth noting. Once it is readied, however, you are free to do what you want as it will never be consumed without you executing the attack in full. Even if you get interrupted, you can try again, so that's nice, at least.
Note; I mispoke about one thing; to get the Magnificent Trio to become available you do need to have 1 of each color not in the music staff, but you don't require it to be like that when you activate it. I guess I have only ever purposely went for a triple note combo so i never noticed! Sorry!

While yes, the normal X, A, and X+A inputs are a 2 step process for hunters to choose which note they want to start with, they can also initiate a draw attack by doing a perform (ZR) while the weapon is sheathed (in the event of a wirefall or a change of location)
just a lil something that can also be done that might've been missed, I'm not too sure how many hunters actually engage the monsters with a perform but its there (prob more useful when your get the 1st switch skill so you can preload b4 fighting the monster, which wouldn't be mentioned this video)
As always, a super down to earth, easy to understand guide to a weapon. You are getting really good at those. Many thanks.
Became a HH main in this game after trying it in Gen and settling on Prowler. Loving it so far! Thanks for the guide!
Idk about yall but these videos are so calming to watch
I am so happy these are here! I won’t be able to play for two weeks due to wrist surgery so these will help!
So happy to see my HH tutorial up first! TYSM! I was hoping for some KO and Exhaust numbers xD but I'm guessing that's in a later video with songs etc xD
rise is making it hard to be a hipster while playing my old favorite weapon
Very happy to have you making content. Looking forward to start hunting horn today after this tutorial. Greetings from Germany 😀
Ah my main weapon, it's nice to see you cover this one. Hope anyone using this to learn the horn has fun using it.
Aaaah the Gaijin tutorials are back!!! Wohoooooo!! :D
I missed them so much!
@@gaijinhunter Omg I know that it's only a yt response but seeing it made me very happy and nervous hahaha.
My little nephew has been playing with me this time around and I was debating getting super powerful and carrying him or finally learning hunting horn so thank you very much for this guide.
SWOOOOON!! Thank you for the return of the intros! Outstanding tutorial! Can’t wait for more Gh!!
I've been enjoying the HH so much, it's the only weapon I've been using so far. I'm usually a SnS main but this generation has made HH flow so smoothly I can't resist the HH toot and bonk.
YES. Your tutorial videos are amazing. Been looking forward to these
"Hunting horn has had a revamp and many quality of life focused improvements!"
Outstanding
"... and is shaping up to become one of the most popular weapons in the game!"
Unfortunate
I’d love to run with a squad of all horns with different buffs. But most of the time u end up having a bunch of attack boost songs being played on top of each other.
Always there when I need you most, bro. The money farm guide then and now HH right when imma bout to try it out.
I can’t believe that ride made me a hunting horn main, as all of my years of monster hunter I never thought I would be a HH main, Thanks Rise!
I looove the new HH, both the moves and weapon designs are so cool
Just discovered HH for myself and what could be a better start into the day then a MH weapon tutorial made by gaijin hunter❤️
As a newcomer to the MH community, I love it and feel very welcomed! I am so glad my wife introduced me to it.
It'd be a first for them keeping all the changes in one title though haha.
yeah I miss the depth that came with something like valor hunting horn; it was so much fun to use.
Sadly it was the reason that the HH still had 1% usage only in World despite it also being buffed in that game :/
thank you for the wonderful guide! I am a LS/GS user since previous iterations of monster hunter games and right now I wanna try something new and it will be hunting horn. :)
I have waited like years for another weapon tutorial
YESSSSSSIR
Wow this takes me back to when I first sub to you, this video reminds me the days you make guides for 3U and 4U. Very Nice.
dude the hunting horn in rise rubs me the wrong way, it really feels like they mae it absurdly braindead, with tons of super armor, shockwave attacks literally headsniping for EZ KOs, your songs basically being playing without any input from you whatsoever, it really does everything for you with little space for placement, thinking or strategy... the complexity and thought that went behind the weapon is entirely gone and what's left is probably the easiest weapon in the game to both pick up and master...
Something i really appreciate from Gaijin Hunter 's tutorial videos is the motion value listed , no other MH tubers bother to show that
he said that since rise will have updates, stating what the current MVs are on an attack may change, and become confusing down the line.
It’ll be interesting to see how this develops over the life of the game-what new songs will show up, will they add other switch skills outside of a major expansion, etc.
What a magnificent video! Thank you for doing this, got a lot out of this than any tutorial out there!
Can't wait to find out what I missed about all the weapons I thought I had all figured out!
Watching GH's weapon tutorial is so nostalgic it brings me back to my MH4U days.
Ha! This video format! It's been years! It reeks of nostalgia for me lol
I got such a sense of nostalgia watching your video, thank you Gaijin.
Yesssss! The music's back! What a time to be alive!
Perfect timing, I was just looking for a guide for hunting horn!
Hunting Horn: Just vibe™
chill vibes
vibes all around
Thanks a lot. Tip top tutorial. Most fun weapon for me. Always loved it but never mained it until rise.
I love the hunting horn I Main it for the game
I think my favourite build I made so far is.
Attack boost level 7
Critical eye level 4
Weakness Exploit level 3
Plus I'm using the rampage hunting horn with the attack up an infinity up. So I get up to 90% affinity!
But wait there's more!!!
I also have
stamina thief level 3
Slugger level 3
And of course Horn meister
I all so made it a paralysis
So I can do great damage, Stun, exhaust and paralyse Monsters, So I can mobilise a monster pretty good, And at the same time buff the attack infinity power of all the other players. I mean what more could you ask for!
Finally!!! ive been waiting 4 your weapons tutorials
As a HH main, this tutorial is very well done. Looking forward for more weapon tutorials from you, as I want to try more weapons!
i miss ur tutorials bro, welcome back
Best HH tutorial around. Thanks as always GH
Yooo the OG intro!! Also nice vid Gaijin, looking forward to the other tutorials.
I used to only use great swords and hammers mainly so having this cool weapon is very refreshing
For elemental damage or status effect, you'll want a similar combo to the one at 3:10, but replace the Left Swing with a Kick Up(A). It's the same number of hits in less time, so for fixed values like element and status, it's a bit better. The potentially infinite combo goes:
Forward Smash->Kick Up->Multi-crush
Forward X->A->X
Fair warning, this will absolutely drain your sharpness bar.
Finally, the thing that introduced me to gaijin, WEAPON TUTORIAL!! been watching your tutorial since 4u
