twitter.com/Lespudmann/status/1389850197413400578 here's the shot, when I block the poison big attack. I've found it by pure hazard and I was confuse on what happened
I've noticed that with insta-block it makes it harder to work shield dashs and dash attacks into your combos because if you didnt block something with it you have to wait for the wind-up animation before you can act from blocking. Other than style points i cant really make any argument for taking it over normal guarding.
Also if you get hit during that wind-up animation, you take more knockback (and chip damage) than even the Sword & Shield! It's pretty horrible unless you're a robot who can perfectly parry every time.
A quick note about Echo Mode: it loses the s on the Perform attack. Considering you can already get all of your songs out pretty quickly with Magnificent Trio, I don't find it worth the tradeoff. Also I love Melodic Slap, and it's hilarious when combined with Bead and a horn that has Sonic Wave on its XA (personally I like the standard song set on the Rampage Horn) so you can just constantly spam three doots at once at the monster. Max Slugger, eat for Dango Slugger, and I've got a Palico with KO King and a blunt weapon and it's nutty how quickly and often I can KO during hunts. Definitely not a DEE PEE ESS META build, but really fun.
I find myself switching HH performances a fair bit depending on the monster I think i prefer echo just a bit more tho becuz you can roll out faster AND because the performance is so good at hitting the heads of taller monsters or monsters that just stand up in general (i.e. Anjanath, Goss Harag, Zinogre, Magnamalo, basically anything that isn’t holding its head on the ground like Narga)
IMO insta-block is definitely worth it to master. Blocking Rajangs consecutive punches then counterattacking gives me that high I get when I played sekiro. Couple it with Guard-Up and Offensive Guard and you're pretty much invincible.
For insta-block I found that there could be an option select for it by doing guard dash or shield dash. Instead of tapping just Zr for insta-block, I tap Zr+X while moving a direction to do a guard dash or tap Zr+X+A to do a shield charge. If I get the proper timing for insta-block I could do the follow up cross sweep. If I don't get the proper timing I still get the guard dash/shield charge. I do this because screwing up the timing of insta-block has a big recovery. And with the proper guard armor skill level, guard dash or shield charge can get through monster attacks. Edit: shield dash -> shield charge; cross slash -> cross sweep
If I may the bead of resonance is great for echo mode. As you can tiggger ecco waves too I just found out. in fact this is the skill that makes rampage horns so good
Playing a guard and guard up lance with the spiral thrust, shield chard and insta block seems like a super interesting play style, feels very different from World at least. When I’ll be able to play the game on PC I’ll definitely try it out as my main way to play the lance!
Nice bideo, basically covered all of the gud stuff. An interestin' factor bout Lance's insta-block(not a fan of the name either) that i found recently (prolly already wide-spread in JP and what not) is that you can mildly negate the downside of it by inputing the guard-dash at the same time you go for a insta-block. So instead of being forced to guard with low guard-level if you fail the insta-block, you get an guard-dash instead wich is on a higher level of block, the downside(s) is that you obviously have to guard-dash and that might mis-position you and its quite of a tight timing but i think its worthwhile to learn.
@@bananarambo8163 Well, no, not exactly, i mean, technically i guess u buffer it in the micro-secs but no, you input it like this: Guard >(very slight delay, basically 1-2 frames) Direction Input + X, wich results in you doing only the parry portion of the Insta-Guard and cancelling the rest. (Theres no animation, but you basically can see the inputs say Guard > Guard Dash) and you actually can get the insta-block proc but only if u mistime for whatevr reason you make yourself safer by guard dashing the bad portion of the animation. Ya can try this with either the projectile or stomp in training (I reccomend the projectile with no guard so you have a better idea but either one works)
This was pretty good. Maybe you Could do a part 1 and a part 2 for each weapon? Part 1: basics; part 2: switch skills. It really worked well here because you briefly explained/re-explained the default switch skills.
I’m pretty sure Bead of Resonance goes by your sharpness Meter to and your attack. for example tigrex HH from white to green it went to 21, 19, 16 Respectively and stacking this with infernal Melody put white from 21 to 23 and stacking this with might seed put it to 24. So yea this BoR can get powerful with the right setup maybe any HH with NO attack up. Please gaijin hunter please see this.
Being used to classic Hunting Horn style, I prefer Echo Mode vs Performance Mode... it’s more efficient for me because you can actually use the new horn combos and the shockwave hits high.
Dang it, I didn’t even watch the Lance tutorial and now I want to make and use a Lance set. At this point if someone asks me what weapon I main I’m just going to say “yes.”
Basically my attitude towards MH weapons. If I see some cool clips, I WILL learn the weapon. I think that's why I'm currently bankrupt in Rise. I must use every weapon, so I must craft every weapon.
Insta-block literally got me back into lance. A problem I always had with lance is that having that strong shield it has made it "low skill" in the dev's eyes since you could technically just sit behind it most of the time. But the reality is that at higher levels of play there is always a better alternative to guarding, at any point it is at least better to guard dash. So seeing it replaced with something that rewards good timing and frees up skill point is actually a game changer. It also synergizes with anchor rage which is cool and I always use the normal charge to close distances anyways. Talking about synergy, a successful insta guard can instantly combo into a charge, guard dash or another insta-guard apart from the cross sweep. I like insta guarding Rajang's punches, sadly no knockback so it's hard for the third punch to ever land as Rajang moves forwards quite a bit. Edit: you forgot to mention that it can replace counter thrust inside a combo, lots of people in the comments think it only works from idle.
It should be noted that the spiral thrust dashes count as a wiredash for the purpose of removing statuses. Yes, it works with Hellfire blight and Magnamalo builds.
2 extra tidbits: Shield Charge makes Twin Vine good. After ZL+B hopping, hit ZR to block attacks and land a shield hit. I've found it to be a good idea to Twin Vine an enraged monster while it's down so you can stay aggressive with Shield Charge. Spiral Thrust's counter buff is SUPER GOOD like Gaijin said, but it fades away very quickly. My favorite combo is Spiral Thrust counter, land both hits and the finisher if you can, and then Spiral Thrust AGAIN if you have a bug to spare. The move itself is strong and you'll carry the buff from the previous Spiral Thrust counter.
Yep! And so can the first one, even mid combo. So you can poke front, and dash any *two* directions, with a parry, and massive damage, for just one bug. Super fun. Also love your stuff Gaijin :)
Bead of Resonance having Atk Up allows me to bring ALL kinds of interesting horns, no longer feeling forced to pick only Atk Up horns. Having Atkup AND Elemental Up on a status effect horn is pretty cool, in my opinion. In Echo mode with Bead a horn with Shockwave music can triple-shockwave a monster every two swings by doing note and perform back to back. Though I don't know to what end because I don't think it'll do more KO or Exhaust than just Earthshaker and it's not like all monsters are made of Basarios that we'd want hitzone-ignoring hits that badly...
I'm a big fan of Melodic Slap, it's a lot snappier for me. Most of the time I cancel before the kick up, which definitely feels like less of a commitment than the Smash. I've also been getting on a lot better with Echo mode's ZR attack, playing a note into Chord for Sonic Waves/Healing spam. Slide Beat OP! I wish the placing of the Bead was a better attack, I'd probably use Bead all the time if it did half the damage of Groundshaker. Melodic Slap Echo Groundshaker (unless Health Recovery L Horn) Looking forward to the Switch Axe videos, I'm kinda struggling staying alive with that one...
Thank you so much Gaijin! I always learn weapon from your tutorials for a long time (if I remembered correctly, since you hadn’t used your voice in videos). Thank you so much for what you have done for the community.
Adept Guard was actually way easier to use. So, I'm gonna stick with my Gravios Beam tanking builds. Lol Also, I'm still salty that we have Basarios, but don't have Gravios.
I'm pretty sure the Insta block when failed will punish you with increased knockback. Also Shield Charge is extremely good for canceling out of combo, going from poke combo to shield charge is gonna dish out more dps than just counter thrust or power guard.
In regards to Insta-Block, it does. I've tested this fairly extensively, and the shield power actually becomes less than the Sword & Board during the windup. When *Sword & Shield* is able to take less knockback than you, you know the Switch Skill is bad.
@@CiromBreeze no, insta guard is really fun. I enjoy using it and it's pretty much just an upgrade of the regular block. You can negate the charge up time for power guard and dash by inputting r+ x+a quickly . It's never been a downside to me.
Insta block is a lot of work tbh, I recommend spiral thrust as you get a kind of same effect plus you can stack the lance damage with offensive guard. So basically you can make a defensive super defensive set and still deal huge amounts of damage
You and gaijin have inspired me to leave behind the LS in favor for the lance. Thank you two for existing, and showing us weebs the true counter weapon. :')
@@gamingodyssey5633 quick question actually, when a monster is downed or trapped, what combo to you do? I do [wide sweep-> guard dash->multi hit thrust-> wide sweep-> repeat] But I don't know if this is the best repeatable combo for damage on a downed monster.
@@shadowthethird3 i haven't run the numbers to be honest, but I've seen many speedruners and they spam spiral thrust. personally, if I have 2 wirebugs, I usually land the 3 hits and that's a lot of damage. If i don't have the wirebugs, I spam wide sweeps -> high thrust -> wide spweep repeat. Poison is part of my usual game play so you need to use high thrust otherwise is a bit hard to proc. That's the only reason why I do that combination.
@@gamingodyssey5633 Perfect! I can actually combo out of the third hit of spiral thrust into a guard dash hahaha, just tired it right now. :)) but when I compare the multi thrust and high thrust, the multi hit thrust does a bit more damage than a high thrust. For my build (rampage raw lance+ valstrax armor) high thrust does 98 damage on the dummy's head, and the multi hit thrust does 40+40+49 which is 129. (all critical hits) Also for status, does the high thrust really proc more buildup than multi thrust? I would assume more hits get you more status build up. Not that I can even use status, since I use full val armor hahahaha. Just curious for when I get comfortable enough with lance to use armor builds that have less than 500 defense hahahaha.
Wrong info at 6:58, you dont need to perform to play the attack boost it just plays it alongside every song you do, as shown at 6:39 when it gives you the attack buff
Basically having the Adept Guard with Old World/Striker’s 3 pokes *plus* basically having a somewhat weaker but still effective Enraged Guard makes Lance feel incredibly strong so far this game.
I absolutely LOVE Melody Mode: Echo. I know it's a pipe dream but I'm hoping that future games have like, hunting horn types or something so I can still access Echo
Lance main since MH Tri here, and I thought Lance was kinda underwhelming in Rise until I started using Spiral Thrust. It’s pretty tough to aim properly but most of the time you should be up close to the monster and aiming it to go out, then turning around to come back in, that’s the most reliable way to land all 3 hits, with the leaping thrust at the end being the most powerful one (stronger than charged wide sweep). Anchor guard is far easier to use, and for some monsters & armor sets it’s the better choice, but spiral thrust really is something even without landing the guard point. With 3 wirebugs you can often just use it indefinitely and it has much higher dps than triple thrust. Shield charge displaces dash attack and is better in every way especially if you can spiral thrust double forward when you need to close distancr
Still rocking Overhead Smash. But definitely use Echo, makes chaining easier, to Have all buffs in one play and Magnificent Trio combo. With optional Infernal song if the monster is down and use Earthshaker for a Buffed Damage Output. Still keeping Earthshaker for previous, but I can see the Bead of Resonance in some situations, but with the monsters always moving around the map.
Woohoo! I wasn't even going to ask because I knew you'd get to them eventually, but I really do appreciate this. :D Btw! Any word on the evade lance set you mentioned on one of the more recent podcasts? I haven't touched a lance since MH4U and I feel like I've unlearned it real bad.
Back in my day had to pause the game to look at the song list, mess it up, then go stand in the corner to check it again. Then we just repeated with all our songs!
Sometimes when I'm playing with people I use intablock when im hitting a monster and the people next to you hit everything including you. Instablock counters their attack and hits the monster. Regular counters also work and can really speed up your pace when hitting a monster for you 3 thrusts.
If Echo mode actually played all four notes, I'd probably switch to it, e.g. quad-blue, or quad-shockwave, or octa-heal/shockwave with the cocoon would make both a LOT of fun.
My biggest pet pieve with Earthshaker is the incredibly short range it has and just how often it can miss. Also unlike BoR or your infernal melody or melodic trio bars, moment you are interrupted by an attack, your wirebugs are gone and you are open for heavy punishment, unable to recover as now your wirebugs recover slowly. I get that it is a balance of sorts due to how much damage it does. But if you dont know what you are doing or cant read a monsters movements well enough, it can be very annoying. I would gladly trade less damage for more reliability of hitting. All that being said i do really love the move so if anyone has advice i am open ears!
I think Insta-Block would be a lot better if it switched out your counter instead of your guard. You never guard in a fight unless you got flung away by the monster and it does either a ranged attack or distance-closing move. If you are attacking, you cannot guard because you'd have to wait for the recovery animation of your attack to end which means you cannot use Insta-Block reactionary at all. If instead your counter was switched for this much tighter counter you could use it during actual combat and be rewarded for perfect timing in action instead of perfect timing while standing still and waiting for an attack to come to you.
The melodic slap is easy to use once you get used to how it hits to the right and infront of the player and you practice and learn the ways it connects to other moves. It comes out surprisingly fast, it ignores the hit zone on the second swing and it combos into basically any other move, it literally slaps Edit:Wait why does the guard skill make the Anchor Rage worse? That literally makes no sense why punish the shield user blocking for using a blocking skill?
I'm noob but when I use the lance with anchor rage it feels really good as a parry move and will pretty much be the default blocking move. It being only one wirebug makes it very dependable as your default parry move, with the downside being multihit moves. If you know the monster well and can regularly block multihits, then it allows you to spec into different skills that aren't guard if you want a more offensive build. Idk if the numbers add up where anchor raging most moves is better than the dps you get from just blocking regularly with the guard skill, but that's the idea I get from the move choices.
ah love lance {and gunlunce fyi], alll abilities have a use! and should always have a sue!!! i only hope you show capcom in a special way that special skills are FUN!! who knows what will come!!!! lets diver into the april update fullGORE hardcore :3
I've found that somehow Echo mode just works much better for my playstyle. I can get a better rhythm for my attacks and song maintenance. I don't even miss the Perform i-frames.
Just so I'm sure I heard that right....Bead of Resonance provides Attack Up(L), even if that is not an available song on your horn?? 🤯 Edit: I play pretty often. I main HH and after that I like using Gunlance, Charge BLADE, SwordnShield, Switch Axe and Dual Blades. Not in any order. If you'd like another monster hunting friend let me know 🤗
Is there any downside to using insta block, other than a slightly longer animation? I can't really think of a situation where the regular block would be preferable
I started using the bead of resonance over earthshaker for the healing rampage horn, and I've just kept it. I was so terrible at aiming my earthshaker that I rarely got it to land on the monster and just ended up wasting my wirebugs.
what I noticed is that to unlock one of silkbind skills you only need 2 weapons at rarity 3 or 4 and you also need to do 1 hunt with the weapon you want the silkbind to unlock
It changes depending on the attack. Specifically, you need to take Medium knockback or less - this is acquired with just a single point of Guard for the training dummy's stomp, but usually you want 3 or 5. (Guard levels 2 and 4 don't increase block power over 1 and 3, but do decrease stamina use when blocking.)

It's pretty horrible unless you're a robot who can perfectly parry every time.
you can do shield dash input by pressing all the input buttons at the same time, you dont have to be in a guard stance to do a shield dash or charge
Thank you for your time and effort. If that quality continues i can t wait for your IG vid.
Happy Hunting.
Thank you for adding Switch Skills moving forward! And thanks for this vid too!
I find myself switching HH performances a fair bit depending on the monster
I think i prefer echo just a bit more tho becuz you can roll out faster AND because the performance is so good at hitting the heads of taller monsters or monsters that just stand up in general
(i.e. Anjanath, Goss Harag, Zinogre, Magnamalo, basically anything that isn’t holding its head on the ground like Narga)
Every damn time, you make me try different weapons.. I love you man.
Thank you, thats the term option select
If I may the bead of resonance is great for echo mode. As you can tiggger ecco waves too I just found out. in fact this is the skill that makes rampage horns so good
Great as always, Gaijinhunter!
U mean guard dash input can be buffered during instablock?
@@Elftwtf thank you, someone mentioned this as option select, now i understand what u mean
@@bananarambo8163 ya now that you mention it, thats basically a OS yep.
This was pretty good. Maybe you
Could do a part 1 and a part 2 for each weapon? Part 1: basics; part 2: switch skills. It really worked well here because you briefly explained/re-explained the default switch skills.
I’m pretty sure Bead of Resonance goes by your sharpness Meter to and your attack.
for example tigrex HH from white to green it went to 21, 19, 16 Respectively and stacking this with infernal Melody put white from 21 to 23 and stacking this with might seed put it to 24.
So yea this BoR can get powerful with the right setup maybe any HH with NO attack up.
Please gaijin hunter please see this.
Thanks for the video as usual gaijin. Your videos are easy to follow and understand!
I really appreciate this! Idk how many other people were asking for this but you sir, have made my day 😊
Being used to classic Hunting Horn style, I prefer Echo Mode vs Performance Mode... it’s more efficient for me because you can actually use the new horn combos and the shockwave hits high.
Dang it, I didn’t even watch the Lance tutorial and now I want to make and use a Lance set. At this point if someone asks me what weapon I main I’m just going to say “yes.”
The right answer is "Gaijin's latest video."
🤣🤣🤣
Basically my attitude towards MH weapons. If I see some cool clips, I WILL learn the weapon.
I think that's why I'm currently bankrupt in Rise. I must use every weapon, so I must craft every weapon.
@@ADoodGuy Gaijin's money making video is a god-send in that regard! I'm in the same boat lol
This is the reason why when Gaijin speaks, the MH Community listens. BECAUSE HE ALSO KNOWS HOW TO LISTEN.
The move itself is strong and you'll carry the buff from the previous Spiral Thrust counter.
awesome video, just wanted to point out that the spiral thrust skill for lance can be aimed during the second dash to go in any direction! :D
Yep! And so can the first one, even mid combo. So you can poke front, and dash any *two* directions, with a parry, and massive damage, for just one bug. Super fun.
Also love your stuff Gaijin :)
You can also delay your inputs!
I really wann see more Lance users now. I'm VERY impressed at how powerful they can be. Makes me wanna...idk....try it out myself
You helped me git gud back when MH4U came out. I love that you're still out there, constantly improving.
No views gotta be here for papa gajin
Melodic Slap
Echo
Groundshaker (unless Health Recovery L Horn)
Looking forward to the Switch Axe videos, I'm kinda struggling staying alive with that one...
Thank you so much Gaijin! I always learn weapon from your tutorials for a long time (if I remembered correctly, since you hadn’t used your voice in videos). Thank you so much for what you have done for the community.
Oh, they basically brought back Adept Style for Lance? Sweet. That was my Hunting Style in _Generations._
Adept Guard was actually way easier to use. So, I'm gonna stick with my Gravios Beam tanking builds. Lol
Also, I'm still salty that we have Basarios, but don't have Gravios.
Both buffs for the lance silkbind moves last 10sec.
I used the switch's 30 sec record feature to find this out.
@@shadowthethird3 your welcome!! I am glad you enjoy my content XD
@@gamingodyssey5633 quick question actually, when a monster is downed or trapped, what combo to you do? I do
[wide sweep-> guard dash->multi hit thrust-> wide sweep-> repeat]
But I don't know if this is the best repeatable combo for damage on a downed monster.
but when I compare the multi thrust and high thrust, the multi hit thrust does a bit more damage than a high thrust. For my build (rampage raw lance+ valstrax armor) high thrust does 98 damage on the dummy's head, and the multi hit thrust does 40+40+49 which is 129. (all critical hits)
Also for status, does the high thrust really proc more buildup than multi thrust? I would assume more hits get you more status build up. Not that I can even use status, since I use full val armor hahahaha. Just curious for when I get comfortable enough with lance to use armor builds that have less than 500 defense hahahaha.
Wrong info at 6:58, you dont need to perform to play the attack boost it just plays it alongside every song you do, as shown at 6:39 when it gives you the attack buff
Something to add, if you don't press any directional input after the first Spiral thrust it does just one instead of two.
Using a sonic wave song with bead of resonance is really fun
Basically having the Adept Guard with Old World/Striker’s 3 pokes *plus* basically having a somewhat weaker but still effective Enraged Guard makes Lance feel incredibly strong so far this game.
I felt sort of unsatisfied after your lance guide too but didn't comment. Good job.
Spiral thrust can also be boosted by silkbind boost ramp up skill, where anchor rage wouldnt.
Oh I thought Insta-Block removed Guard entirely, well this certainly changes things.
"Happy Switching" pffffffft, nice one. :P
Phew. They aren’t messing around with the timing on the just defend there. But it’s gonna lead to some sick videos from the Royalguard masters.
I have completely abandoned the jousting dash attack for the shield charge. It's just so much better for what I do.
Ooooh the lance is looking good. Haven’t tried any other weapons yet cause I’m still trying to master my Gunlancing!
I really like the hh switch skill it feels more mobile than overhead and it makes me fill the x+a song faster then the magnificent trio
Woohoo! I wasn't even going to ask because I knew you'd get to them eventually, but I really do appreciate this. :D
Btw! Any word on the evade lance set you mentioned on one of the more recent podcasts? I haven't touched a lance since MH4U and I feel like I've unlearned it real bad.
Gaijin: "...This is one of the reasons why I really like the Hunting Horn, is how automatic it is."
Me, an old Hunting Horn main: 😔
Back in my day had to pause the game to look at the song list, mess it up, then go stand in the corner to check it again. Then we just repeated with all our songs!
@@Medli32 Lol. I dont wanna go back that far. World was the perfect HH imo.
Sometimes when I'm playing with people I use intablock when im hitting a monster and the people next to you hit everything including you. Instablock counters their attack and hits the monster. Regular counters also work and can really speed up your pace when hitting a monster for you 3 thrusts.
I like the "juuup" sound you make it is so funny
The timestamps are much appreciated!
If Echo mode actually played all four notes, I'd probably switch to it, e.g. quad-blue, or quad-shockwave, or octa-heal/shockwave with the cocoon would make both a LOT of fun.
Like I said on the Lance video, twin vine combos really well with shield charge and makes up for the loss of mobility plus some
I just wish I could replace Twin Vine with one of the other 1 bug switch skills. The other bug moves are so much more fun to me.
sprial thrust and shield charge are a great combo due to the lost of mobility due to shield charge.
I personally found Shield Charge VERY fun to use against Diablos when he does his charge. Even broke his horns with it as well.
Always love having my healthplugs up.
Mega convenient for me with these two being my main weapons lol
Spiral thrust is so much fun to use with hellfire cloak
It comes out surprisingly fast, it ignores the hit zone on the second swing and it combos into basically any other move, it literally slaps
Edit:Wait why does the guard skill make the Anchor Rage worse?
Lance switch skill are AWESOME I want to play lance seriously.
Edit: I play pretty often. I main HH and after that I like using Gunlance, Charge BLADE, SwordnShield, Switch Axe and Dual Blades. Not in any order. If you'd like another monster hunting friend let me know 🤗
Lance main here I play almost every day, always willing to hunt with someone new.
Lance shield charge actually has 3 hits if you start from the air! Super easy to knock out a monster if you slap on slugger!
Is there any downside to using insta block, other than a slightly longer animation? I can't really think of a situation where the regular block would be preferable
With regular block, u can activate counter thrust n power guard earlier.
I prefer insta I actually find it easier to use in hunts than in the training field. I get a couple counters off per hunt an ive never practiced.
Not sure if you know, but Bead of Resonance can deal some damage when casting it.
He said it does shockwave damage in the video. Or do you mean at the moment you place it?
Ro the Bro the moment you place it. The hunting horn's head has some hit boxes that can deal minor damage.
Don't need to do any hunt. Do 8 unique upgrades in the weapon tree and it'll unlock
@@eeeeeeeev yes, but when you are low on zenny or materials is cheaper to make 2 weapons of rarity 3 and 1 hunt with that weapon type
It feels like Christmas came early lol
Bead of resonance also does damage when placing
Definitely prefer Echo Mode for Healing Horn, and Sonic Wave matchups. So fun against Diablos and Jyuratados lol
You can satart the lance shield charge from mid-air by pressing ZR
And it synergizes very well with twin vine. Just leap to the monster and stun it. While being pretty much invinsible
I really cannot decide between echo or performance on hunting horn. I kinda just keep switching (pun not intended) between the two every 4 hunts
Insta block does care about guard skills, but only guard up. U cant insta block a rajang laser without guard up
How much guard do you need for the Spiral Thrust to parry attacks? Just 1 or do you need more?
Guard 1 will let you block a lot of attacks, but most people find guard 3 to be a sweet spot to parry most things
