This was a very enjoyable video. Presentation was very chill unlike most of the unnecesarily overhyped pitch of other MHRise videos. Also I like that it's not your cookie cutter how to play beginner's guide that treats the viewer like a child that's learning to read for the first time in their life. Not to say those videos are bad but there's like a dozen of those out there for literally any game but especially Monster Hunter. I'll definitely dip my toes in SnS as I have not done so with all my years of playing this genre.
Finally, a video on the sword and shield that properly explains a mechanic that I've known about but have never been able to utilize because nobody elaborates on it despite it being a really good tool for the weapon.
As a lance user who runs guard 5 guard up 3 and embolden 3 who also plays sns from time to time. This build is a good way to make me have the block strength of a lance but the mobility of the sns. I've never thought about putting guard skill on sns as i usually get evade window 5 and evade extender 2. Thank you so much for this idea! I'm planning on running this build with maximum might and heaven sent for my affinity and sharpness needs and other damage increasing skills. Again thank you so much for this 😊
I made a super crit build. Maxed affinity to close to 200% when everything triggered. Then i went defense cause i realized it could be useful with a certain mach jesus elder dragon
just wanted to say i love your videos. I just started rise and most of the time I didn't know what I was doing but by watching your videos I have become better. Loving your hammer videos especially.
I really appreciate this tutorial. Good job. I've never seen someone explain this sword and shield mechanic so clearly. If anyone needs it: 10:33 build and skills
I was trying other weapons, I found hammer very enjoyable but your SnS inspired me to go back to it. I already build a set inspired on your embolden play style. You have really nice videos!
I use Charge Blade and SnS for my main weapons. Charge Blade is when I want to have fun blasting monsters but funnily enough SnS is what I use when I want to play it safe. Thanks, Violet Mizu for the Embolden skill which is very useful for both my main weapons.
Damn! That guard point feels exactly like a guardpoint of a CB. I always wanted to secondary SnS. Now i might just be able to try that! Great video! Thanks for the suggestion!
This whole time I thought Guard Slash was just for setting off bombs safely. I've never once thought of putting Guard 5 on SnS but now I see it should be a staple.
This is the kind of stuff I wanna see people do with Monster Hunter, just some cool builds that aren't interested in being hyper-competitive for speedrunning, just fun and still plenty viable
I'm itching to try this playstyle for some time now. It looks fun judging from the video. In comparison to my favorite sns playstyle (evasive status damage) it almost feels like a different weapon. However I personaly wouldn't bother with elemental damage since the playstyle incorporates many shield attacks with higher motion values. It's worth mentioning that the Shield Bash benefits from guard skills quite a bit as well.
@@Ditronus.During Shield Bash (silkbind) there is a windows when you're blocking which allows you block attack on the way. If attack you block knockbacks you it will interrupt shield bash so that's where extra Guard counts. You can also trigger Offensive Guard with shield bash.
Update, made the gear last night and absolutely love this hunting style, completely changes how I normally play SnS, definitely going to use this loads. Going to go check out your other stuff now, happily subscribed my dude
verry nice video :D currently playing through aster rank with self build lbg sets but used to love sword and shield in base game, now i have even more of a reason to push through to get this set :D
This build looks like so much fun. One of my regrets about MHR is that I couldn’t get in perfect rush nearly as much as I could in MHW. I really enjoyed using the move back to back and abusing the extreme aggression it allowed.
Thanks for the video. Just got into sunbreak a couple weeks ago and feeling some fatigue with the hbg playstyle. Its very kush and powerful, so it's hard to move from, but motha it is boring. Trying to explore more playstyle options like you were talking about at the start. Looking at sns and charge blade. I like charge blade a lot, but that new dragon conversion build looks so cheap that I'm not sure I feel comfortable playing it.
I felt the same way playing bow. Super op dps if built well but so easy to play and too safe that i was getting bored lol. Super glad i picked up sns i have to say the metsu is SO satisfying along with ko on the shield and just the general flow of the weapon. making it very versatile and safe yet still fun and risky at times if you want to keep long combos going and stay in the monsters face for k0s.
It feels like if you post the quest for others to join, the monster is gunning for you far more often than others, so this embolden playstyle will work well in MP that much more if you are the one allowing others to join your quest as opposed to joining other random quests.
SnS is just so much fun. Always loved it and World was amazing. Then Rise happened and the skills are great. I run a build focused on wide range (no shocker) but running skills like wind mantle, wirebug whisperer (and rampage slot) with Redirection and offensive guard+slugger. Can easily spam silkbind attacks as well as dodge and conserve items (to use on allies) with redirection. It'll lack some raw damage that other builds have. But you can still fit in skills like burst to give a boost. I might have to see if I can fit a guard+wide range build for this kind of playstyle as I already work on perfect evades for Redirect. This build feels more offensive with follow up attacks. While the one i do with Redirect is more focused on holding wirebugs and having more room to use silkbind attacks.
I’ve been playing on PS5. I’m looking forward to playing with this build. I’ve been having a lot of fun with the SnS or as I like to call it. “Kitchen Knife and Plate”
Holy shit, I played sword and shield for a good amount of time in base rise, and I quite literally forgot that counter even exists. The sword and shield's guard is so weak that against most monsters I tried it on, it wasn't helpful or worth the investment and I just decided I was better off evading attacks, it's really cool that it's actually usable in this game.
Im pretty late but as of the final title update I know you don’t focus on meta builds but this is the meta with status weapons now because sns is actually a raw weapon. I just think its cool that the meta shifted into actually utilizing the whole move-set.
why not status sns utilizing this block method for faster perfect rush + drill slash combo + advancing slash + twinblade combo + falling shadow into plunging thrust? seems like it would be just fine for status builds
Ive been using Embolden+Guard on SnS sinceEmbolden was introduced with the Violet Mizu release. Unfortunately, Embolden was stuck on this set and couldnt get in as much damage i can put into the set. But now that Embolden is a jewel, it should be essier to integrate it into a stronger loadout.
Man I had NO idea that, that counter could be used to go mid perfect rush. I usually only use that attack when scratching my nose with my left hand and when I'm unfamiliar with an attack's timing so that I can still get a couple safe pokes in while hiding behind my shield. Info like this is why I love this game so much though. I've used SnS almost exclusively for several hundred hours of play and the fact that I can still learn more about my main is awesome.
Oh! My favorite playstyle with SnS that I never see others use though is what I think of as an aerial-style. Basically it's using a double falling shadow with the stab down (triangle + Circle) as an air cancel. There's times when the falling shadow makes contact and sends your hunter higher in the air but the monster then shifts further away so that you'd miss the stab or shield bash. Using a second falling shadow is possible as long as the first one has made contact allowing you to reposition yourself for the downward stab/air cancel once youre over top of the monster or if the monster is big enough or has large wings you can get sent even higher when the second shadow makes contact (which is something I loved doing while farming Narwa, getting triple hits to climb as high as I can). I'm not sure if that style is common knowledge or not but between replay clips or streams I don't really see other players utilize the second shadow.
Gonna see how I can put some points of guard in my immortal build. It is already fun and doesnt die even against anomalies. Gotta practice more to get that guard slash timing.
For the build as I showed in the video, the most important part is the violet mizutsune armor which you should have access to at your current rank, so yes!
I'm wearing violet mizutsune for the 4 body pieces, the layered headpiece is called the Qurio Crown. You get it from the MR6 event quest "Dual Threat: Revelry of Destruction" which has you fight 2 furious rajang in the arena!
The Qurio Crown! Mentioned this in a previous comment, but you can get it from the MR6 event quest "Dual Threat: Revelry of Destruction" which has you fight 2 furious rajang in the arena!
The true downside is having to use Guard 3-5 and Embolden 2 to make the playstyle viable. The hopback dodge requires absolutely nothing and pretty much covers the same weakness the guard slash does.

I've been messing around with SnS recently and this is the perfect video I've been looking for; awesome and very informative stuff 👌
Really cool to see your build, as soon as we got embolden gems I tried a max guard embolden build and fell in love
I really appreciate this tutorial. Good job. I've never seen someone explain this sword and shield mechanic so clearly.

You said it! 👍🏻
Great lesson. Ill be trying block counter again.
this looks so fun and different from my sns playstyle of back hopping to avoid damage and only having offensive guard triggered by metsu. nice
0:02 that Guard Slash was a perfection
Also, Guard Slash easily triggers Offensive Guard
I thought I was the only one who used the guard slash 😳
This video is also perfect for my playstyle with this weapon oh my god thank you for this

How does the shield bash benefit from guard skills? Just in how fast you can recover to counter with a shield bash?

I have been searching for a way to use the sns parry. Incredible playstyle idea. I love it.
This is so cool, absolutely going to go make this set and try it out. Awesome dude
Update, made the gear last night and absolutely love this hunting style, completely changes how I normally play SnS, definitely going to use this loads. Going to go check out your other stuff now, happily subscribed my dude
Cool play style and good job explaining! Can’t wait to try this out
Very well presented video
verry nice video :D currently playing through aster rank with self build lbg sets but used to love sword and shield in base game, now i have even more of a reason to push through to get this set :D
Definitely gonna check out that ready stance video.

that was improving my SnS knowledge, thx

Embolden+Guard is really great to use against the Risen CG Valstrax.
Hey joeyL. Just subbed. I loved your untouchable swaxe video.
Primeira vez assistindo seu canal. Foi bem esclarecedor, tentarei essa dinâmica.. Possivelmente verei outros. Abraço! Happy hunting!
can someone PLEASE tell me how to get my decorations to a higher level??????? my guard decoration is only level 1 and it won’t level up
dang as a lance main you got me hooked

do you mind sharing the actual armor and weapon you are using for this build? :D

thanks man, this is amazing
GOATED Guide
when I grow up i want play sns like you
Gonna see how I can put some points of guard in my immortal build. It is already fun and doesnt die even against anomalies. Gotta practice more to get that guard slash timing.
Given i picked up Sword and shield after Insect glaive felt off and greatsword was too slow, i need this video to watch
Now this is a fun build idea
Man, if they buff the shield bash counter in the future to parry anything like Longsword does, SnS is going to be a beast
what happened at 0:26?
Guard slash
inspired by your build I put embolden and guard in my frostcraft build and ended up creating an monster of attack and defense
Just coming back to MH and I'm currently at MR 119. Can I built this build?
For the build as I showed in the video, the most important part is the violet mizutsune armor which you should have access to at your current rank, so yes!
I dont know this human but I like him 😊
Cool, so it finally seem like a offensive guard build should be possible with SNS.
Wow truly interesting build...
wow i justw watch interesting SNS play
You didnt show your decorations :(
People just cant believe it when i tank a teo bomb the scroned blast from mag and the gorillas thunder blast french kiss 😎👍👌
such a good video
Wht u layered armor set please?
I'm wearing violet mizutsune for the 4 body pieces, the layered headpiece is called the Qurio Crown. You get it from the MR6 event quest "Dual Threat: Revelry of Destruction" which has you fight 2 furious rajang in the arena!
What layered helm are you using?
The Qurio Crown! Mentioned this in a previous comment, but you can get it from the MR6 event quest "Dual Threat: Revelry of Destruction" which has you fight 2 furious rajang in the arena!
This is a great guide, keep posting great contents! Happy hunting ✨
The true downside is having to use Guard 3-5 and Embolden 2 to make the playstyle viable. The hopback dodge requires absolutely nothing and pretty much covers the same weakness the guard slash does.
Ah yes mini lance
Need High rank armor and weapon for this build. Newbie here :(
Bro show the decos lol
So, you can basically play SnS like a Lance, and do a better job than a Lance... this is a really sad state of affairs for lance Mains :(
Lance is way more powerful than this, especially with elemental lance.
So. You can't use it until you go past the end of the expansion story. Great, never mind.
it's not like you need to build specific powerful builds until the very endgame
