[Eng CC] Song of the Onion / Chanson de l'Oignon (French Military Song)
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 10 фев 2025
- The Chanson de l'Oignon is a French marching song from around 1800.
According to legend, it originated among the grenadiers of Napoleon's Imperial Guard. Before the Battle of Marengo, Napoleon found some grenadiers rubbing an onion on their bread. "Very good," he said, "there is nothing better than an onion for marching on the road to glory."

The French defeats in 1870 and 1940 was mainly due to Germans seizing the great hidden onion reserves in northeastern France. They are the source of the French army's power. They'd been moved further south after 1871, which was why the French won WW1, but out of overconfidence, they were reinstalled near the border after 1918. Franco-German wars have essentially relied on preserving or capturing this great resource.

The story behind the song is that after Napoleon crossed the Alps to face Austrian forces and before the Battle of Marengo He saw some of his grenadiers putting onions on bread and Napoleon told them "there is nothing better than an onion for marching on the road to glory".
ALL HAIL THE ONION'S
OÑO
I was wondering why the song existed. Thanks for explaining
*O N I O N*
This song has a terrible untold meaning, when the French went to fight they knew that they were going to lose comrades in the fighting and the custom was that they bite into a raw onion to give themselves strength and courage, as in the song says "a single onion turns us into a lion". So as during the last battles to bite into an onion remind the soldiers that it may be the last onion he shares with his friends and brothers in arms and that he will join the lions who died in battle. And of course why the onion? Because it grows very quickly and during almost all the seasons in just 10-15 days the soldiers planted it regularly during the campaigns, so most of the time there was only onions to eat with a little bread.

In Sweden this song is neither about onions nor revolution. We sing it each midsummer and the title is "the little frogs", it's quite strange that a song from the French Revolution ended up being a song for midsummer festivities.
There was a time when sweden was horny for all things French, so it's not that surprising.

And then we Turks stole that song and made it an ordinary nursery rhyme. With none of the cultural context.
