Greetings from Finland! Here's a verse from a Finnish song inspired by Ireland: "They said that in art lies the strength of a small nation. A small nation can't survive except with heart and spirit They sang and created a terrifyingly good swing."
I love Irish rebellion songs because they always, at least at some point, make fun of the British. There are many that are solely for that purpose but just about all manage to throw in some sarcasm to make fun of em
I had to learn about William Butler Yeat's poem "Easter 1916" in university, and some of the names in his poem, I see here in this video! Ever since I studied about the Irish Revolution through the poem, I've had a deep sense of appreciation for the bravery of the Irish. Their rebel songs increase this appreciation and W.B Yeats is my favourite poet of all time. Love from India to the Irish; we were both colonised by the same power and we are free!

Lyrics: As down the glen one Easter morn' to a city fair rode I There armed lines of marching men In squadrons passed me by no pipes did hum, no battle drum did sound it's loud tattoo. But the Angelus bell o'er the Liffey swell rang out in the foggy dew. Right proudly high over Dublin town They flung out the flag of war 'T was better to die, 'neath an Irish sky Than at Suvla or Sud-el-bar And from the plains of Royal Meath Strong men came hurrying through While Brittania's Huns With their big great guns sailed into the foggy dew. Oh the night went black, and the rifles' crack made perfidious Albion reel 'Mid the leaden rain, seven tongues of flame did shine o'er the line of steel By each shining blade, a prayer was said that to Ireland her sons be true When the morning broke still the war flag shook out it's fold in the foggy dew. T' was England's bade our wild geese go that "small nations might be free" But their lonely graves are by Suvla's waves or the fringe of the great North Sea Oh had they died by Pearse's side or fought with Cathal Brugha Their names we would keep where the Fenians sleep 'neath the shroud of the foggy dew. Oh the bravest fell, and the Requiem bell rang mournfully and clear For those who died that Eastertide in the spring time of the year While the world did gaze, with deep amaze at those fearless men, but few Who bore the fight that the freedom's light might shine through the foggy dew. Back through the glen I rode again my heart with grief was sore For I parted with those gallant men Whom I'll never see no more But to and fro in my dreams I go And I kneel and I pray for you For slavery fled! O glorious dead! When you fell in the foggy dew!
Still one of my favorite songs. Best regards from Slovenia. We may live in different parts, but our history is similar. It's why I'll always understand the Irish fight against the British, just like we got occupied by Germans and Italians.

@@alessandro9818 yeah, and Italian partisans were cool too! And your partisan song O bella ciao is beautiful. Yeah, Germans seem to want to dominate the EU, even if it's supposed to be equal. Ireland is completely free. if you're talking about northern Ireland, they did not share the same sentiment, as their southern brothers. When Ireland went independent, northern Ireland wanted to remain loyal to the crown. in 1973, a year after bloody Sunday, the Northern Ireland held a referendum on independence, the nationalist boycotted it, and this resulted in over 98% voting to remain, even if the nationalists all voted, the majority would have still supported remain at around 57% supporting remain. @@Imyourhuckleberry01 Would you not consider liberation from British rule freedom? And do you really deny that the surge of support for irish Republicanism was in large part due to the martyr status of the heroes of the Rising?
Btw, before the Easter rising the vast majority of the Irish population was neutral towards British rule as long as the money kept flowing, what changed public opinion wasn't the revolutionaries valour but the brutal response of the British: they left Dublin in ruins, killing hundreds of civilians in the process, meanwhile turning the rebels into martyrs.
Even the PM was angry at the brutal response, he saw it as exactly that, a way for people to idolize and think of the revolutionaries as angels sent to save Ireland
But what about home rule crisis, the Gaelic revival and the famine being quite recent and the formation of paramilitaries like the UVF and Irish volunteers and IRB?
The hate wasn’t exactly because of that nobody’s liked them for hundreds of years about 700 before we got independence or 800 years because they took away are language and all that the biggest reasons before any of this is the famine and what the British did in it
@@Dpb_2008He likely meant the majority, as in, yeah there’s tons of people in Northern Ireland who want independence, that’s why the new IRA exists but there is a large population who doesn’t care.

God i love the Irish... Καληνύχτα από την Ελλάδα!
Greetings from Greece 💪🇮🇪🇬🇷
Strong support from France like always. Especially for a guy from Brittany like me, it makes sense. Celtic Irish brothers, you are always welcome to the Festival Interceltique de Lorient.

Not really, the Rising was a failure.
@@Imyourhuckleberry01 Your British Hasbara is a failure.
@@Imyourhuckleberry01The notions on you. It failed, but without it we would have never been free.
@@imeantherearethedarktownsy5210 Thats just bollocks mate, tell me when was Ireland "ever free" as outlined in the 1916 Proclamation, answer = NEVER. My guess it you have never read or understood the document, what do you think the civil war was all about?

Much love from a Pontic Greek who lives in Cyprus! To never kneel in front of the big tyrants and stay pure hearted ✝️
James Connolly was not Irish born and grew up in Edinburgh Scotland but had Irish parents.
And of course as people tend to forget he was in the British Army for 7 years and part of the British Army occupying force in Ireland for several years which is when met his Irish wife Lillie...when he was still in the British Army. Great man though.
*" 'Twas better to die neath an Irish sky, than at Suvla or Sud-el-Bar."*
Congratulations Ireland, your people understood the simple fact that dying for one's own country is better rather than dying fighting for a foreign power, something which us Indians of the same time couldn't 🥲
India is also a great inspiration to all of us that haven't gained our independence yet

This song is interesting. It feels like the irish version of the star spangled banner. Except while the SSB is about a single battle for a fort and the perserverence of the american troops keeping up the flag, this song is like that on the scale of an entire country. I remember hearing this song as a kid and thinking it was beautiful. Never even heard the lyrics just liked the tune. Revisiting it in my thirties I'm stunned. It's like your dad telling you a shocking secret you should have figured out yourself, one he would have told you if you had just asked.
What a beautiful and terrible song. I can't imagine a single person in this world who wouldn't cry if they really really listened and paid attention.
This song will be sung for millenia. In a world where the top songs only last a week on the radio before being replaced.
