Your videos are like chicken soup for the biking soul, man. When I can’t ride myself, I don’t always want to learn something new sometimes I just want to live vicariously and enjoy the side/background zen.
You too. We are in Williamsburg getting coffee. Gonna cruise the city today since we only really have one day. Passed right by Cunningham on our way in.
The good thing that you can pack up anything you need since you're taking a car, not like me that I need to fit everything on a bike when traveling. Have fun and looking forward seeing trip videos 👍
It was definitely nice to make the decision about what to take on the bike later in the trip. Erin took so much of my stuff home in the car when I set off for Long Island! Just starting to look through the footage now!
If it's not a mess before you leave then you for sure will get out there and realized you totally forgot something important, haha! A lot of great stuff here, I just bought those same defeet gloves too, loving them!
Tim your videos are always enjoyable. Don't worry about what others think you should ride or not ride and what to pack. To each their own. Ride and enjoy.
First lesson I learned from going from back packing to bike touring was biking is more complex and a bit maddening when going to the unknown without a vehicle to doff the excess onto.
I love my cape for bike touring. 1 pretty packable item keeps you completely dry on and off the bike (assuming your bike has fenders). Still gives you some air-flow while riding too. It can feel like a sail adding resistance but I only feel that around 15-20mph so not often when touring. Mine kept me completely dry for 77 miles of hard rain on my last big tour, had dry feet for 55miles too! Enjoy!
We ended up having perfect weather so I didn't even bring it on the bike camping part of the trip - will have to wait to post about my experience until I need to use it. Cheers!
I just got a rain cape, and we rode for a day of rain on the GAP. I loved it, kept me dry, but I didn't overheat. I always feel the same about packing for a trip. I try to lay out items by function: sleep, eat, ride. I like my camp chair too.
We ended up having near perfect weather so I didn't even bring it on our bike camping part of the trip....so I'm still interested to see how mine will work. Cheers!
I like my drop bar gravel bike more than my 80s MTBs - but whatever works for you. I still had a blast this week on my Gunnar - some narrow spots with the wide bars though!
every year i tell myself i'll log at what temps and what time of year i get my layering right...and then i forget. makes it fun every fall to reconfigure even tho i should know better by now!!
I have some light flip flops by Zero Shoes - but I didn't bring them on this trip with the chilly nights. I did bring my Vans slip ons for the car part of the trip but went with just my Old Schools for the bikepacking. It worked out fine as only one night was cold when we rode a bit after dark.
We ended up having perfect weather and I never got to use it. Didn't even bring it on the bikepacking portion. Just starting to look at some footage today. Cheers!
If you want to vary your OCA tour next time you're here, you can turn left into Ossining (if you're headed north) and take a ferry across the Hudson to Haverstraw, then ride the gravel / dirt road Nyack-Haverstraw trail back to Nyack, then across the Tappan Zee Bridge path (yeah, don't call it the Cuomo Bridge. :), and head back to the OCA from there. It's a beautiful ride. I think the ferry runs through this coming weekend, then it closes for the season.
it kind of bothers me that the trolls seem to get to you, the content you create is outstanding and worth the time every time!! fuck the naysaying keyboard twits
They don't get to me - I just like to call them out and head some of them out ahead of time. It's not always trolls either - just some people that are stuck in their ways and can't see any other side of things.
Pack some nice wool socks for sleeping, the overnight early morning low temps dont look too extreme, if your in a sheltered location.Sat morn. looks like coolest from a feels like temp. I live in Nw CT, if you need any help with anything with anything let us know.
Really only ended up needing to sleep in socks and warmer clothes on our night in Long Island - we got lucky with the weather. We rode the OCA in shorts and t-shirts!! Thanks so much!
We only had one cold camping night but some of those in the bottom of the sleeping bag would have been great. I don't find they help me when riding as there just isn't space for them to work.
My whole adult life of bike touring, the past 60 years I have lived the life style of a nomad bring everything I will need for a 365 day trip through all weather from minus 10F to 120 F. My whole I have only had one bike at at time. It has to meet all the challenges for all types of weather and surfaces to bike on. My clothing is layered to work in all conditions fish net under layer, poly pro ventilation fishing shirt, Long sleeve linen shit, wool mid 17:43 ayer. Alpaca hoodie, wind jacket, rain jacket. Head cover: buff, flat cap, wool cap with ear protection. Feet:Hiking Sandals les with toe cover, alpaca mid weight socks, Bottoms: Knickers with nicker socks. Emergency multi layer: Ninja suite: wool top and bottom base layer, balaclava, mid weight alpaca socks. Bed: Modular Sleep System. Kitchen. Stove, pot, kettle. The greatest number of deaths from hyperthermia occurs in the Spring and Summer months. I’m always ready for the unexpected.
Hope you have a great time! I know I asked about the bike interviews, but I can see how they'd be a buzzkill or just not something you even think about since this is a trip to have fun, not work. So I rescind my request for interviews! If you ever have someone chomping at the bit to have a sit down with you to show off what they've done for their bike, cool, otherwise, it's just not worth the hassle, IMO.
It was a mix. The route is already on my Strava but I will be talking about it in a video that will hopefully be out on Thursday(and the routes will be linked there).
No way - I already struggled to keep up with Dylan as is. Not to mention trying to ride with that through NYC or down the single track and gravel on the last day!
I have spent a lot of time in queens this summer. Long Island city and forest hills sections. If you get check out fin back or fifth hammer both are great breweries.
Making interval notes as I watch. Croton Point park may be a little dicey at night, I used to flyfish off there , well ok, fine. Godspeed! I'm sure you are well aware that CT now has a fire ban in all state parks. No smoking , even. Lamentation Mountain, Berlin, CT, about 8 miles from my lazy ass here, has been burning for days. Great Google pics! 13 fires going throughout the state. I rode to Maine and back this timeframe in 2015. We dipped into the 30's. The FROST kicked my ass. Previous to that, I had a Coleman Sportcat propane heater , and it was amazing and lightweight, even. But they discontinued it . I now have a "Little Buddy" Mr. Heater which is around the same BTU, and will work just fine . Obviously vent yer tent coherently. I went down to 29 degrees in the Catskills with it , I could hang out in a T-shirt. Just don't burn your sleeping bag on it. Be coherent. Put it inside a pot or something. I even left it on all night and I didn't die.
Yup / no fires at Nutmeg. Made it to Long Island campsite and was too late for one anyways. I just slept with my long wool on everywhere. I have a down jacket too. All good. We saw them dumping water from helicopters on our way through CT on Thursday.
@@TimFitzwater NOAA Weather prediction going forward indicates you're all not gonna die. The WIND, however, is noteworthy here lately. So tie your cape down with a bungee or a spandex scarf ,oh whatever. OMG they just banned vaping. Not sustainable.
FROGG TOGGS® FROGG FEET WATERPROOF OVERSHOES - simple non-bike specific solution that works. Very packable. Definitely will keep your feet clean if things get sloppy.
I don't know if you intended it, but I have to admit I was giggling during this video. All the minutia decisions in this video will be something I overthink for days and lose sleep over right now. But, I remember my early days when I had just enough stuff to go and do something. I had almost zero decisions, I just took everything and somehow I still had fun/survived. I think I have progressed and have better stuff now, but could I have just overly complicated my experiences? Hope you had fun.
It is always hard to say! I definitely hope people got a little kick out of this. So much content shows the perfect, tidy way of doing things and I know a lot of us don't really live like that! It was an awesome trip. Cheers!
Regarding the shoes, I got a pair of Shimano SH-EX300 shoes. They have laces that tuck into tongue, use SPD and have a good tread for walking. Doesn't help for this trip, but I found those to be a good option. I use them with pedals that are flat on one side and spd on the other.
Your videos are like chicken soup for the biking soul, man. When I can’t ride myself, I don’t always want to learn something new sometimes I just want to live vicariously and enjoy the side/background zen.
Thanks so much! Trip went great by the way - videos soon obviously.
Good to see you at Nutmeg. Cunningham?!
You too. We are in Williamsburg getting coffee. Gonna cruise the city today since we only really have one day. Passed right by Cunningham on our way in.
Chaos always precedes order.
An experienced bike tourist told me that particular rain cape is fantastic and the only downside is use in high winds.
Thanks for sharing the video, despite how unorganized it felt to you...always entertaining to watch. Hope the trip goes smoothly and safely.
It was great! Starting to look at some footage now.
My only advice is don't over think it and enjoy the adversity! 🍻
Kitty knows you're packing for a trip.
That is fun safe travels

I zoned out when I saw the way cool Pantini and LeMond pictures.
Enjoy that you show real life is more gravel than velodrome smooth. Hope you're having a good trip.
Ride safe and have fun Tim. I love my Canon nifty 50. Can't wait to see your footage!
Thanks! Just getting into it now!
Another great production of the Tim and Edmund show! Love it!=]
Pre trip is always nerve-wracking for me too! Have a great trip!!😉✌️
Thanks!
Between the weather and moving parts this is the toughest time I’ve ever had.
I just got a rain cape, and we rode for a day of rain on the GAP. I loved it, kept me dry, but I didn't overheat. I always feel the same about packing for a trip. I try to lay out items by function: sleep, eat, ride. I like my camp chair too.

Beautiful mess! Great vid. This one is great for occasional revisiting. Trial and have fun regardless topic.
Thanks! I will talk about how everything worked out in the next few vids.
Love you watch twitch lol one of us one of us
Have fun on the trip! Edmund is looking for the trailer for you pull him.
I'm with you on 2x for urban riding. A light turns red, one easy downshift in front, no fuss.
Just got back and completely stand by it - 2x was awesome!
The only bike better than a gravel bike for the streets of NYC is a rigid mountain bike from the 80's with slicks !
Fast and agile 😂😂
I like my drop bar gravel bike more than my 80s MTBs - but whatever works for you. I still had a blast this week on my Gunnar - some narrow spots with the wide bars though!
I love your videos they are always great but I need more Edmond😃
I'm so happy to be back with him now!(though it was an awesome trip)
Oh hey, I saw you on the 55 mile route. Good riding with ya!

Seriously! It is like starting over every year!
Me watching Tim, watching Terry 👍
I guess you've looked into lightweight flip flops or those Crocs/knockoffs as a second in-camp etc set. Very light.
Hope you love the cape as much as I do. It turns my bike into a car. Have a great trip. Be safe. Looking forward to seeing the videos.

I get the dilemma. I love riding my drop bar gravel bike around my little city. Gives me a lot of confidence. Hope you have a fun trip!

I use the crushable toe warmers at night or on really cold mornings
We only had one cold camping night but some of those in the bottom of the sleeping bag would have been great. I don't find they help me when riding as there just isn't space for them to work.
I have a pair of those SmartWool tights, too. They’re amazing for riding in the cold, and do better when wet than everything else I’ve tried.
Thankfully I didn't have to use them wet this trip - I'm still glad I bought another set though.

Very cool! Thanks for sharing!
I find I get it more and more dialed I just am not used to bikepacking in the cooler weather yet.
Excited to see what you think of Long Island. Hope people aren’t asshole drivers.
Hope to have that video out on Thursday....but we were able to avoid busy roads until we were real close to Queens.
Hope you have a great time! I know I asked about the bike interviews, but I can see how they'd be a buzzkill or just not something you even think about since this is a trip to have fun, not work. It is something I will do at some point - when it feels right.
I do have friends that are willing.
Don't feed the trolls, they just want the feedback in your videos.
If you're worried about getting wet, just come down to Kentucky. Apparently it doesn't rain here anymore. Ever.
It didn't rain at all for us either. We couldn't even have campfires in CT which is pretty unheard of I'm told.
Have a great trip! Curious on your Long Island route; road, greenway, mix of both?
It was a mix. The route is already on my Strava but I will be talking about it in a video that will hopefully be out on Thursday(and the routes will be linked there).
What about Edmonds trailer rig?
No way - I already struggled to keep up with Dylan as is. Not to mention trying to ride with that through NYC or down the single track and gravel on the last day!
Should be fine.
It was.
I have spent a lot of time in queens this summer. Long Island city and forest hills sections. If you get check out fin back or fifth hammer both are great breweries.
I did end up at Fin Back - it was random as I just wanted to ride over the Queensboro Bridge and there it was!
I find that the swift bags are basically waterproof. I’ve never had anything I packed in them get wet.
I've had some dampness with the Zeitgeist but after a long deluge. In general they are great!

Re: cold feet, I use overshoes to keep my feet dry and warm!
Don’t think that will work with flat pedals and pins though.
@@TimFitzwater good point, you'll shred through them in no time. I use them with spd clips
