Before we start building a traditional stone family home here in Portugal, we wanted to find out if all of the time and money that we're investing in our farm in Portugal is likely to yield us any financial return, or if it is simply a matter of the heart.

Your renovating costs are remarkably low for the return of vast improvement. I feel the value is above $350,000 and your agent is being very conservative. You’ll have a home, a guest house, a pond, outside kitchen, a dedicated office and 2nd guest house, garden as well as vineyard, olives and fruit orchard all overlooking a charming valley and countryside. Sounds like paradise.

Wow 3 years 🥰 I've been following your channel pretty much from the start. I really enjoy the renovations being done, oddly i find it quite mesmerising to watch and i do remember the clean up vlogs when i first tuned in. You've put so much work in and it does show. Wow, these prices are so cheap. My husband is a contractor and builder and these prices would be quadruple what you’ve paid. He said that driveway alone would be over 40k. We poured an 18’ x 18’ pad that was 3k just for cement. That’s not including the $1500 for pavers for the top.He did it all himself so labor costs not included. Thank God my husband is a builder. He also said 5k for the brick house project is crazy cheap because you have skilled labors included in that. We are incredibly expensive herein NJ, USA. You and John have done an incredible job on this place and I’m so excited to see whats to come. Much love to you and your family!

Flowers do so well in Portugal and to me, too, are a happiness necessity. They are what make us so excited in spring.
I had a pond built on my property and never went into it because of the “weeds,” the frogs, turtles, snakes and bugs that I loved watching, but didn’t like feeling on my bare skin.
Except for the very hot, dry summer, your property is paradise. Sunshine makes us happy, cloudy days make us sad. Growing plants and trees we planted make us happy and you have made your property profitable for you no matter what it cost

The joy you have brought to us every week is, to us priceless. It has been a dream come true for us to see your beautiful boys as they grow, and to see your and John’s innovation as you turn a neglected piece of land into a small piece of paradise. Good on you for all of it. I have done old home restoration in the states for almost 35 years. Cleaning, clearing, rebuilding and sweat equity. We get our money back in so many ways. With you guys unless you sell one day, which none of us know what the market or state of our lives will be then , you have created a life long stability for your boys. An experience you cannot put a price on. Also they will grow up in a different culture, not to mention UK and Africa, learn languages, hands on, bare foot grounded, clean food, lovely life John and Tara you have afforded them both and yourselves. And sharing it all with us. I have been to your area and will be back, but bought a farm with a river in Central for now. You inspire me every day. You did not mention your RUclips earnings or other assets from the Portuguese project that you have created which has enabled part of the dream to become reality. Admirable qualities. Because moving to another Country and doing what you are doing requires an income. That is why it has taken me until I am 61 years old to finally make the move. INCOME. Finally I have figured it out after over 25 years of spending winters in Europe, to Mexico, to Many other countries.

They have never regretted it, the new experiences of building something that comes out of your hands, what your children look at, what their parents have created, the peace of mind, the nature you can have in relation to a big city, the beauty of the countryside, what Yes, money is important, but the experiences we have are even more important.

Once you’re ready to rent your guest house on Airbnb, perhaps, we could arrange a family trip to stay there along with our 2 granddaughters ( 7,4). You see, when they come and visit us on our “farm”, they watch your RUclips videos featuring your boys and Mario the digger. They are following the tree house construction as well. Now, they would like a tree house to be built here on our property just like Crusoe and Sawyer have on your property!
You have and are building a beautiful, cozy, delightful home and priceless home!

What you spent on your cobble driveway was a very good price. I had to have a small driveway front garden re done with paving bricks because the previous driveway had no drainage and was on a slope which caused water running down under the bungalow and that cost me £10,000 and its so much smaller. Big enough for two cars so not big. That was three years ago.

We are currently looking at properties! Been in Portugal for 3 months, and so happy to be here. We are constantly going back and forth between a newer home, or buying an older home and restoring it. Difficult choice, especially with little ones!

Hello Newby's.... John and Tara... every bit of blood, sweat and tears has afforded you a perfect home for your family. The memories are priceless, the lessons (minus plumbing) cannot be given a price. How much the boys have experienced, all of it is priceless. By the way, John, you should negate the cost of landscaping and flowers from the bottom line. The pollinators that will visit will cross pollinate the fruit trees, vegetables and flowers for years to come. Can't wait to see your next projects. Love the idea or an AirBnB. Just one example of comparison of the expense here in the US….we resurfaced a small bit of road with asphalt probably the size of your driveway not circle…$40,000!!! All of those costs seem relatively cheap compared to what it would cost in the USA (Mississippi).

Well, I am happy to hear the property has gone up in value realistically. Not that I don’t begrudge you a million or more, but I do think prices going up like a rocket isn’t good for average people but mostly only benefits speculators which for me is one of the reasons to move elsewhere. Main thing to my opinion is your efforts are roughly compensated when selling off but if you are to stay there, your efforts are materialized into invaluable life purpose. What else would you have wanted to do? Thanks for the videos, very entertaining and informative!

Goats are very good for clearing brambles, tall grass, etc. Good for natural fertilization. Some businesses in US are to "rent out goats to clear land". But other channels show neighbors with sheep, goats, etc using land to graze. It might be good to borrow neighbor animals to clear other places on land.
If all else fails, have John design kitchens for ppl who need them.
Having water for the grass isn't necessarily a good use of water. Simple Life Portugal has springs coming out of water....that they dont want. Maybe worth putting in some tanks at his property and bring when you need it. Pls check in on Dan as his wife passed.
How is your Portuguese? The portuguese daycare system might be a good way for your kids to learn portuguese before they get to school. It would be great for them to learn another language. If it gives you 4 hrs to do whatever and gives them a chance to play with other kids. Expats Portugal has their child in portuguese daycare. You guys should try to find a free portuguese class for yourselves....being immigrants are eligible for the free classes. If you havent taken them yet.

Everything could change in as little as 5 years. Life events, world events and general property values change with the wind. If we all concerned ourselves with future financial issues of property values we would never purchase homes. We do because we want stability for our families. We certainly hope that as long as we improve our home and property that the value will improve, and most of the time that is the case, but it’s never a forgone conclusion. The land you’ve purchased is amazing and has been absolutely wonderful for your family. That’s the most important thing.

I live a couple hours north from you in Galicia, Spain. I have looked at homes in Portugal. What you have is a pretty decent place as far as sq m2 go. I think with a new built home, 350,000€ is way too cheap. Unless you are in the boonies, which doesn't seem like you are as you get internet and all services. Either way, your ROI is priceless. I have lawn envy. LOL Congrats for the hard work put in, the place looks great.

This was such an interesting and informative video! Thank you for sharing the costs of things, especially the materials which has given me much to think on (albeit on a much, much smaller scale).
It just goes to show though how much is lost (for want of a better word) on labour costs given how much you could have spent if you'd just got a package deal for each project completion.

That was an amazing episode guys, you totally nailed it. Super informative for people looking to make the leap! It would have been handy back in 2005 when i moved to Spain. There was so many dodgy estate agents and builders back then, all trying to make a buck out of you, it used to break my heart seeing peoples dreams in tatters after finding out that the couldn`t do building works etc because of restrictions and land classification that the estate agent forgot to mention.
Something for you guys to think about in the future, doing some kind of website or channel, where you can help people through the process and have a listing of trusted estate agents, builders , suppliers etc...
I`m sure there is already someone doing something similar, but with your reputation and knowledge through your youtube channels, people would be at ease dealing with you xoxoxo

Desses 350.000 podem chegar aos 500.000 muito facilmente o mercado português tem muita especulaçao e muita procura, podem apostar na propriedade no alojamento local e fazer dinheiro extra em arrendamento por exemplo renda mensal de 600 ou 700 €, vocês tem o ouro na mão não o entreguem as imobiliárias que levam como a remax 5% da venda mais IVA. Preservem o ouro e valorizem o que tem o bem mais valioso em Portugal são as casas e o turismo… e cada ano aumenta mais.. por isso pensem.. não liguem a imobiliárias que só querem ganhar lucros sem fazer nada. Continuem a vossa jornada estão no caminho certo!
