I've literally spent YEARS remembering pieces of scenes from this movie and could never find anyone else who knew what I was on about or find anything online resembling what I remembered YOU HAVE NO IDEA HOW SATISFYING IT IS TO FIND THIS MOVIE AGAIN AAAAAHHHH
I remember the red cat singing "Me me me me meee!" And that's all I coukd remember. Never knew the name or what to look for. I thought it was a Don Bluth film, not Disney, so I was looking in the wrong place to begin with.
Treasure Planet suffered from the fact it came when Disney stated not marketing 2D animations. Cause even to this day Hollywood fails to see that certian movies did well because of their writing and not just because they where 3D animated.
I didn't like Treasure Planet all that much. It was a cool concept, but the movie just fell flat for me. Same with most of the movies Disney made in the 2000s.
Lol God help us. 🤣 Based on the Michael Jackson involvement, the hybrid, and talks of making it modern to the 90s and not the 30s, the movie may have been a Who Framed Roger Rabbit or Space Jam vibe. It could've been good and different, but not the Cats Don't Dance we love. 🖤✨
I loved this movie as a kid. They showed it all the time on Saturday mornings on Cartoon Network when I was little. So many fond memories of watching it!
I mean I was probably considerably older than you were at the time but I do remember seeing this on cartoon Network back in the early 00. Little did I know what a sad twisted story was lying behind all of it. when I first heard about what a mess this movie was behind the scenes I was unsurprised and yet very sad.
I remember watching it then as well. They used to have a lot of neat stuff like this all the time. I stopped watching TV after I got the Internet back in 2005, so I don't know if they continued that trend, but considering all the other lame stuff going on with TV at the time, I'm pretty sure they didn't. Kinda sad, but I'm grateful they showed that stuff in the first place. I guess I moved on at the right time.
I loved thay movie as a kid. One scene burned into my memory was when Dr. Jekyll turned into Mr. Hyde, the dramatic turn as he screamed "My name is MR HYDE!" terrified me and I loved it.

Wow. I actually own all those “failures”. I really loved them growing up, still do. They’re part of the reason I don’t make assumptions about films. They can surprise you.
True, you have to watch before you judge. For me most animated movies regardless of who did them are done well. The worst ones are the ones that look like they were rushed which isn't as bad as some of the non animated trash I've seen with bad acting, storylines and endings. An example of a film that was rushed but actually paid off was Toy Story 2. Just by watching it alone, you wouldn't think it was rushed but it was. Pixar knew what they were doing, they pulled off the impossible and gave us a great 3D animated film enjoyed by everyone. However, Cats Don't Dance which I think is an excellent film despite all the problems it had during production and still holds up today. I'd rather watch Cats Don't Dance numerous times than watch some of the movie trash I've seen on Amazon Prime.
I'm surprised you didn't bring up: -Darla Dimple's resemblance to Shirley Temple. -How this film is possibly a metaphor for what black people delt with in Hollywood during the time period.
I always thought the story of this movie was a metaphor of the dying 2D animation industry. And a warning to the other industries (live action, 3D animation) that they could befall the same fate. If that's the case, it was entirely prophetic. "But I thought Hollywood was always looking for new talent?" Now they're not even looking for talented people for live action films. Just someone who can make the next remake of an 80s movie.
To this day, the final dance number at the end is one of my favorite scenes in any movie. It's inspirational. It's energetic. It's fun. And, after seeing everything go wrong through the whole movie, it is so emotionally rewarding to see everyone get their spotlight. I've always loved Cats Don't Dance and I always will.
Loved cats dont dance it was one of those films I rewatched a lot as a kid. I knew it wasn't popular but I didn't know it was that bad financially. That sucks
Cats Don’t Dance was one of my favorite childhood movies. In art school, we actually watched the entire movie one day because of the amazing color design
Previews on the vhs tapes... what is it about them that sticks in the memory? I have the same thing with theme song for that awful tv show Butt ugly martians, never watched the show but the song was used as a trailer on most of my old videos so it's cemented in my brain. "WE ARE THE MARTIANS! THE BUTT UGLY MARTIANS!"
Spark, please pin this comment. This was written by Ryan Simmons, one of the movie's animators, he posted the following on the Nostalgia Critic's video about Cats Don't Dance. "I was one of the animators that worked on this film. We were so excited for it to come out... it was looking so good! The animation was done by Turner Feature animation. During the creation of this film, Warner Bros. bought out Turner Networks and suddenly had this film land in their lap. WB totally dropped the ball concerning the marketing of this film. They did virtually nothing so no one knew about it, let alone had any desire to go see it. They did have a promotional tie-in with Subway and a few cheap happy meal type toys were made for it. But they just let it die. It was devastating. When we went to the cast and crew screening, the first thing that came up was the WB logo, as if it had anything to do with the creation of the film. It was a slap in our faces especially after how poorly they marketed it. And THAT is the reason if bombed at the box office... no one knew about it. It was never given a fair chance to sink or swim on it's own merits."
ackbarfan5556 it makes me wanna cry because the movie truly is breathtaking. and older small minded people will just assume 2D animation is dead because movies like this never get the attention they deserve. now everything is CGI which can be equally as beautiful, but doesnt have the same charm..such a tragedy.
Cresent Moon the character design notes for her are strict. The entire production is fascinating. The animators were not allowed to give Sawyer any stray hairs on her tail, like a fur split or clump anywhere. One long fluffy clump was the goal. I love it.
The legend NATALIE COLE was Sawyer's singing voice...how did Warner Bros NOT see the potential in that?? She was amazing, and Scott Bakula held his own for Danny when they sang together. There's honestly so many solid actors in this film, like Kathy Najimy (Hocus Pocus and Sister Act) and John Rhys-Davies (Gimli in the LOTR series). Truly one of my favorite movies growing up, along with these other box office "failures." I'm glad it's free on RUclips, I've randomly thrown it on a few times in the last couple years!
You’re telling me not only Cats Don’t Dance failed financially , but Pagemaster and Iron Giant failed too? It seems it was tough times even back then. {: (
Crazy. I've watched The Iron Giant probably 10+ times. One of my favourite movies of all time. Would never have guessed it was a financial failure; the movie is held in such high regards by everyone I've known who watched it.
Just watch the movie. Just. Do. It. It's so good. I didn't get to see it when it came out (pagemaster I did see) but I did see it when I was sick in highschool on cartoon Network.

@@sigma5902 I've read about about this. tldr is that making remakes won't actually prevent their older movies from entering the public domain. Especially the ones based off of other fairy tales. It's possible that they could be trying to utilize their properties before they get released but the most likely they're capitalizing on the live action remake trend for a mediocre profit.
@@JollucasChannel On that note, remakes really aren't a new thing...in fact, there are SEVERAL beloved classics out there that are, in fact, remakes...take for example the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy, the first two films of it being remakes of seperate halves of the animated "Lord of the Rings" movie... Thing is, good remakes are made with care and a true vision of how the film's story could be told better. Without that care, a remake can easily come across as a cheap and cynical cash-grab, which I believe is the true issue that people are having with this latest batch of Disney remakes. Used to be, you would see a remake once in a great while when a studio actually had a great idea for an old film that they wanted to flesh out. With "Lord of the Rings", it seemed as though there was deeper story potential than what could fit into the original's run-time...so, making it live-action and stretching that film's story across two movies allowed the studio to delve deeper into the story than the original had and allowed for it to have a more epic feel, hence giving us the blockbuster success that the remake truly was....again though, these remakes only happened once-in-a-while if said remake was warranted... Now, we get remake after remake with nothing new and original coming out...which means movies that haven't really NEEDED remakes to further delve into the story are getting them with what seems like little effort being put in to improve on the original...hence, the sense of these movies being cynical cash-grabs...
I LOVED this movie when it came out! The Iron Giant too! They were some of my favorites! Warner Bros. wouldn't know a good movie if it slapped them in the balls!
A friend of mine worked Cats Don't Dance. I remember him telling me about the problematic production back then. Also Max is one of the best secondary villains of all time, bar none.
@@DigiMega351it’s borderline canonical since Danny reacts to Max’s seeming ability to teleport when they get to Darla’s first version of Big and Loud. For such a big guy, he sure is fucking fast apparently lmao
God I absolutely LOVED this movie growing up. I had this on VHS and watched it countless times. I had a kid crush on Danny and Sawyer was like my fav non disney female character. She has a beautiful voice and character design. Everything about this movie was great. The animation, the songs, the colour palette, the visuals and omg Darla Dimple's Big and Loud was such a good classic! Wish the movie had done better because it deserved it! Thankfully it's getting some of the recognition it deserves.
My grandparents had this and space jam on VHS. My sis and 2 cousins watched those two ALL THE TIME. We never took any movies from our home because we were only capable to watch those movies when we visited our grandparents so we watched those, over and over again and I still think those are good movies (or its just nostalgia ;))
I guess that's why it's considered a sleeper title of its own. As along with many others being partially mentioned. Or even the entire 90s(or 80s?) generation of animated films.
I always think of this 5 year old looking girl, amazing villainess Darla Dimple roaring... *I DIDN’T GET WHERE I AM TODAYYYY, BY LETTING MYSELF GET PUSHED AROUND!!!!!!*
Man this review takes me WAY back. I remember I was introduced to this movie when I was in elementary school. My music teacher showed the class this movie and when I was a kid I was OBSESSED with this movie for years. I loved the music, the animation, and the characters, especially Darla Dimple. Every time I see that kid on screen it makes me crack up! There's just something hilarious about seeing this Shirley Temple-esque character just go insane! Anyway, This movie is very highly underrated and is still my second favorite non-Disney animated film to this day (second behind The Prince of Egypt.) Also another thing I noticed while watching this review is how similar the plot is to Zootopia. Think about it: it uses animals as a commentary on racial stereotypes, the main character is an optimist who helps change the pessimistic views of another character as they get to know each other, and many things everyone says to Danny about keeping his dreams more realistic is very similar to many moments with Nick and Judy when they first meet (albeit Nick is more sarcastic and straightforward, but the point still stands.)
Another great movie that Warner Brothers didn't advertise is Batman: Mask of the Phantasm. That was such an amazing movie it could have been huge. Still one of my favorite animated movies to this day.
14 Demon Jagger: Warner Bros pretty much poorly advertised all their animated movies, expect their Pokémon films they owned, space jam, quest for Camelot and Looney Tunes Back In Action.
11:40 The suit the orange cat wears is extremely similar to Tom's suit (from Tom and Jerry) in the short "The Zoot Cat" where Tom dances with a girl cat. I think they just slipped in a reference to other cats dancing.
From what I recall from history class, Zoot suits were really popular in Black and Latino communities around that time. Makes sense they'd appear in animation/pop culture.
I'm guessing Michael Jackson dropped out of the project, because 1993 - 1994 was when he dealt with his first accusation of child abuse. I also read that he was taking painkillers to cope with all the stress. Based on the newspaper article with interviews from David Kirschner, Michael Jackson put in his heart & soul for "Cats Don't Dance". If he went through with this project, we may have seen a live-action/CGI hybrid that would've blown us away like the audience while they're watching Danny, Sawyer, and the others perform on stage at the ending.
I watched it for the first time last year and thought the same thing. It's so good. I watched Cats for the first time two weeks ago and also wished my mom would have bought the tape like I asked (she refused because she thought it looked dumb).
This movie was so good. I was sad when I got older and discovered it was considered a failure. But I stayed true to believing I was right for loving it. Happy to see an honest review giving it praise
Yeah, that library scene is the thing I remember most about it. Something about the concept and stuff intrigued me. Not scared me but then again I watched The Secret of NIMH on VHS and didn't got scared somehow (though I likely didn't fully comprehend certain things)
@TheLatiosnlatias02 yay i cant wait to read it. Im thinking of making a fanfic of cats dont dance too. Its great how even though the company gave up on it, us fans never will
I actually vaguely remember this movie from my childhood. But when I got older somehow my copy was lost. Then when I tried tracking it down no one in my family could remember what it was called and I certainly couldn't remember at that point. It's so awesome to finally have a name for that mysterious movie from my childhood. Turns out it's free on youtube if anyone wants to give it a watch.
That movie was the very first time i was introduced to jekyll and hyde, and because in my country our culture is not very literate a movie like this was very welcome.
I just watched the other day, and I've seen this a bunch of times, and I always enjoyed the fluidity of the animation. The songs are legitimately amazing. Two of my favorites are "Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now" and "Our Time Has Come." Amazing movie back when I was a kid and still amazing years down the road.
@@Violette_06 That tends to be how furries are born. The rise in animated anthropomorphic animals has caused an increase in furries and the community they are part of. Much like being exposed to a specific childhood game and ending up in that fandom.
To answer the title: hell yeah. I remember loving this movie as a kid and being surprised it was a failure when i got older. The animation, music, characters, its just a overall fun time
As an aside, it's quite sad that Randy Newman is only ever remembered for Toy Story - he's actually a talented musician with a history of making controversial music.

Treasure Planet had the exact same problem. It was an amazing movie, but it was marketed badly.
Breadsword did an amazing video on it right here on the Youbtoobs. Deffo check it out if you haven't yet.
Treasure Planet suffered from the fact it came when Disney stated not marketing 2D animations. Cause even to this day Hollywood fails to see that certian movies did well because of their writing and not just because they where 3D animated.
I feel like no one talks about Titan AE like my favorite movie as a kid

That surprised me,actually! Idk why,but I'd had the impression as a kid that it was pretty big.I know I was fascinated by it.
I saw Megamind in theatres with a friend and didn't expect much.
Hands down one of my favorite movies, and an underrated hit. 😍
@@LoveMyUnusual Megamind is definitely not underrated, but I can see where you're coming from.

-Darla Dimple's resemblance to Shirley Temple.
-How this film is possibly a metaphor for what black people delt with in Hollywood during the time period.
Anthony Baumgartner well maybe he's not american and he don't care about black people, so whatever
That's such a shame...
He said that in the video, though. That essentially the marketing was too lacklustre.
Gotta love corporate!😔

I used to question myself on whether or not I was a furry every time I saw Sawyer. Her design is just a pleasure for me.

Disney: makes mediocre movie

Bigger Company: “I’m about to end this man’s whole career”
It's so unfair, especially since lately Disney's been pushing the "live-action remake trend" a bit too much. Like, how about an ANIMATED remake?!
MRTwizyfizzy I’ve heard the only reason is to stop the originals from being released for public domain. Haven’t confirmed it though
Like music, gaming, and anything else. Really sucks. And then we wonder why creativity dies.

Anyway, This movie is very highly underrated and is still my second favorite non-Disney animated film to this day (second behind The Prince of Egypt.)
Also another thing I noticed while watching this review is how similar the plot is to Zootopia.

Two of my favorites are "Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now" and "Our Time Has Come." Amazing movie back when I was a kid and still amazing years down the road.
Well now we know who Saber’s furry crush is.
Fair play to him, he’s got good taste.
Ri'sallidad agreed I think that we have all had a crush in an animated female animal. And I think some people kept that crush and are now furries
@@Violette_06 That tends to be how furries are born. The rise in animated anthropomorphic animals has caused an increase in furries and the community they are part of. Much like being exposed to a specific childhood game and ending up in that fandom.
Makeshift Kazoo Studios yup
I can't blame him.
To answer the title: hell yeah. I remember loving this movie as a kid and being surprised it was a failure when i got older. The animation, music, characters, its just a overall fun time

*gets universal hollywood tour ad*
As an aside, it's quite sad that Randy Newman is only ever remembered for Toy Story - he's actually a talented musician with a history of making controversial music.
