  • Are you ready for tackling the age-old question: "To sit or to stand while urinating?" Let's unravel this mystery with Dr. med. Dr. phil. Stefan Buntrock, a board-certified urologist and sexologist from Göttingen who's here to spill the beans (or should we say, the pee?).
First off, let's talk flow! Good urinary flow is essential for effective bladder emptying, a vital aspect of urological health. It's a simple equation: Pressure needs to overcome resistance for successful urination. The bladder muscle (a.k.a. the detrusor muscle) is your bathroom MVP, powering up to squeeze every last drop out. Your abdomen also jumps into the mix, adding pressure to help the process. But, no straining, please! That can lead to more problems than it solves.
Now, here's the twist: Age changes the game. As you hit the big 5-0 and beyond, your bladder starts to act more like a rebellious teenager, losing elasticity and muscle power. And gentlemen, let's not forget the prostate - it tends to grow with age, adding to the resistance.
So, what's the optimal position for emptying that bladder? If you're over 50, take a seat! Sitting relaxes the pelvic floor and lets you use abdominal pressure more effectively. Younger guys, you've got options. Feel free to stand or sit; your bladder's got the gusto to handle both.
And here's a bonus tip: Watch out for constipation, the sneaky sidekick of urinary woes. Fixing bowel issues can often improve bladder function too.
Finally, Dr. Buntrock's golden advice: next time you're at the urologist, ask about your residual urine. You might be surprised to find out how much is left behind!
So, there you have it, a blend of pee, poo, and practical advice. Don't forget to leave a comment sharing your experiences, and thanks for tuning in to this bladder-busting breakdown!

I live alone so when I “sprinkle when I tinkle”, guess who has to clean it up? For that reason, I have peed sitting down for years. I have wondered if doing so might have negative impact, thinking in particular of increased residual urine. Phew! Thanks to this video I can now carry on with peace of mind. Thank you Dr. Buntrock!

I'll be 74 in February. At bedtime, I need to empty my bladder at least twice, and usually three times. My bladder feels empty after first voiding, but I know better. A few minutes later I can pee again, with a better, more continuous stream. I will let my dog out, wait for her, and when I go back to the bathroom I can usually pee a third time, and am confident that my bladder is as empty as it ever gets. I agree with Dr. Buntrock that it is difficult to know when your bladder is actually empty. I have had a very large prostate. I had the prostate artery embolization procedure done which has helped. I can still have difficulty if my bladder becomes too full.

I've been sitting to pee most of my adult life (when at home!) and it feels much better, and I (and the family) don't have to deal with stray droplets missing the toilet bowl. Additionally we've now just installed a compost toilet with a separator, so urine goes to the drain or soak away, and solids go to be composted. You do absolutely need to sit for this separator to function!

I am 53 and switched to a Whole Foods Plant-Based diet 6 years ago, I also drink 5 cups of cold brewed green tea daily. My total intake daily of water including the green tea is one gallon. I urinate often but normal in my opinion, considering the amount of water I drink. I get blood work done 3 times a year and kidney function is better than average for men my age. My PSA 6months ago was 0.60 ng/mL. Consider switching to a W.F.P.B. diet if you want to improve your health naturally. My sex drive is very much alive and have no problems with erections whatsoever.

My biggest issue now is that annoying extra dribble of pee that seem to stay behind until I let my penis go. I'm 46 and you are right that sitting simply makes me feel more relaxed and unrushed while standing has that balancing and many other factors that makes urinating quite a task. Thanks for this video.

Although I sit always (at home), I actually think standing produces a better flow. And when I sit, I find that leaning back produces a better flow. 67 with BPH...

In certain boheme areas of the U.S., bowel & bladder movement is done squatting. Yes, even if it means putting feet on the seat of the toilet. Thoughts?

I don’t think it is wrong to squat, but I think it is unacceptable to do it on a toilet seat.

Interesting. I am 59 but standing seems to work best for me. The pressure for me seems to have dropped some over the years but my urologist seems to think it is the antihistamine I take rather than aging. Dutasteride improves my flow of both urine and ejaculate for a more satisfied release of both. Thank you Dr. Buntrock.

I sit at home, especially if I wake up, in the middle of the night. Standing when at work.

I have a harder time peeing after pooping. I have to stand sometimes to pee. Usually because I’m in a hurry to either get ready to work or at work and don’t want to take forever while on break.

At 83 bladder won't empty sitting. Even standing needs a bit of help, Don't know the term for it or just how to describe it but, I contract the lower ab/pubic area and the urine begins to flow.

I am 63 and stand when I pee. My only problem is, I have a second bladder I was told by a doctor and it doesn't always empty with my real bladder. So when I empty the bladder , sometimes I feel my "second" bladder hasn't emptied yet. It's like it has it's own mind. My urine is very dark and smells when it finally decides to empty.

Nope, I'm 59 and if I pee sitting down I'll dribble all down my leg when I stand up. Been that way most of my life. Standing for me.
