- Just me messing around with some samples from the Silent Hill Soundtracks. VERY SPECIAL THANKS to VIVIsect, Revelations of the Past and all the nice guys from the Silent Hill Heaven forum who found this JEWELS, THANK YOU SO MUCH, FRIENDS!
Most of the sampled material comes from libraries of companies like Spectrasonic, East West or Zero G.
Enjoy!
More information about the libraries used: silenthillforum... - Видеоклипы
It's not that he uses samples, it's HOW he uses samples. Makes all the difference.
Also Yamaoka choose a very good variation of samples, so I think he have a very good taste in music.
Disagree. If you start to use some audio programs or even video editing programs you will know how easy and intuitive that is. Not saying the music is bad, because it is not, but he doesnt deserve the merit, not even close.
i agree. i used to think these songs were made using synth/samples with automation, envelopes, effects, etc. kinda sad to see its all just C major default presets.
@@Desetivado It's always easier when someone else has already done it.
@@Desetivado You have no clue what you’re talking about at all. What he did with these samples is no different from what any composer does when they use stock preset piano sounds on a keyboard to make music. He created the composition. It’s no different from using sound fonts. Very few composers or musicians create pad sounds or synths from the ground up 💀💀💀
Don't know where to use a random sample?
Play in G.
Now play it on a lower octave.
Lower.
Lower.
Lower.
That's better.
It's amazing how some of these are literally Akira holding down a single key 😆
But it sounds great 🤯
It's crazy to see how simple the amazing tracks from the series really are.
All of these "purist" people saying oh shit he used samples... bruh, guess what? It doesnt make him less of a musician. Music is about evoking EMOTION. Finding a preset or a sample and youre able to match the theme of what the game is trying to convey is 100% art itself.
Go to Silent Hill Forum dot com, there's a topic where me and a lot of other users have shared LOTS of samples that Akira Yamaoka uses...
there are always people who do wonders with a simple master keyboard.
Like description says, most of the samples come from royalty free sample libraries from companies like Spectrasonics, Zero G, East West, and many more...
The White Noiz synth was also used in the first Silent Hill, I think. I also think I heard the Lost Horizon (Resting Comfortably) sample at normal speed somewhere. The one after that is heard at the beginning of SH2 before the forest trail.
Im new to this type of stuff but does anyone know the sample used in Claw Finger or is it an original sample by Akira
it is a original sample :)
For some reason I thought yamaoka composed these sounds himself so it kind of dampens the image I had of him but he’s still a great composer nonetheless! He was able to piece use these presets to their full potential in an unorthodox way.
I know EXACTLY how you feel, but yes, he's still a great composer :)
I kind of see it as a painting.
The painter didn't invent the colours, nor the brushes, nor the canvas themselves... But they did something someone had never done before.
i don’t think using samples should make you see less of a composer. almost every single person that makes music samples something. it’s part of the art form, to take one thing and make it new. and to be able to do that well shows mastery of the craft
Do pianists build their own pianos?
It's actually very standard for media composers to use sample libraries like this (Distorted Reality by Spectrasonics and others here) when working on big projects, since there's very rarely enough time to do all your sound design from scratch when deadlines are bearing down on the team. With these libraries in particular, they were used over countless Scifi and horror games and shows between the mid 90s and now, and have taken on the same sort of popularity that classic Roland drum machines have in popular music, just in a more niche scope. Samples and synth presets also help composers who are looking for more experimental sounds, and in Yamaoka's case, can provide the basic pitch content or overall structure of a composition in absence of more traditional instrumentation, like an orchestra, which he wasn't trained to compose for anyway. Man worked on samples, intuition, vibe, and a love of Portishead.
do you hve a link to the sound libraries you have here? or are they a purchased collection
+Ryan Power Actually I got the names of the libraries from a Silent Hill forum called Silent Hill Heaven, I don't know if the thread is still active...
White noiz ❤
Adam Schuldiner I know right? Sheer bliss...
The best part 😍
It is only bad when all video game producers starts using the same presets or methods.. in this case obviously not. And in the grand scheme of things, even with limited process Akira was still able to make it standout than the rest of the video game ost.
Think about that for a second.
Heya, do you still have these samples posted and available for download? I've found links, but they are very old and no longer work. Would appreciate some help! Thank you!
audioz.download/ i found this..though only some worked..besides that, theyre pretty hard to find
Don't worry my friend! :) You need to buy the libraries (or download them, your choice), for example, there's this library called SMOKE from a company called ZERO G, that library contains samples in WAV format (a few of them used by Yamaoka-san), that samples must be loaded into a sampler in the software of your choice to use them like this... After you get the libraries try searching some tutorials about sampling, is not that hard really.
well, you know what they say, "doesn't matter what you use, the important is how you use it"
And this applies to every music, movie, and all the invents in the world, even Newton said that he was able to accomplish what he did because he stood on the shoulders of giants...
4:18 - the day of night on 4:23 it was supposed to be f#, your variant is hurts my ears, buddy
Yeah well, sue me ;)
Nice vid, it's funny how I got to know that I had 95% of the libraries Akira used for the games.
However, I'm surprised he never used any of the Homegrown libraries, which sound pretty close to these libraries.
Sonny Crockett can you send me all libraries that Akira uses wich you have?
@Nogale yes
@@RenUnderscore Hey, you wouldn't still happen to have those libraries available, would you? I'd certainly be interested! :)
Wonderful :) This is exactly what I was looking for. I had no idea how Akira made Resting Comfortably from Lost Horizon because I've heard a already pitched down version of Lost Horizon which was confusing for me. Now I know better and I learned a lot through this video! Thank you! :)
Hi there! Thank you very much!
What you see me doing on the M Audio is nothing but a change of octave, the sounds are loaded on a EXS24 sampler in Logic Pro, the M Audio is just controlling them, which means, you can load them on your PC on any sampler from any software (Reason, FL Studio). Hope that helps!
I find sampling as a amplifier or a building block to the tracks themselves because without those samples he maybe wouldn't be able to complete the whole vision of song or at least make the song as good as it could have been. Sampling is inspiration and showing you the creativity behind the composers unique style and I am glad that he sampled because I feel the inspirations wouldn't have been as realized as they are. Samples give impact to the songs and give it the finer sweetener, composers find that just right sound and make it into their own sound or song, that is the magic of Akira Yamaoka he takes the single notes and make it blend with a beautifully orchestrated track that sounds depressing. Akira Yamaoka is definitely my favorite composer the more I think about it tbh.
What instrument are you using in this video.
noob questions but how did you used/install or whatever the samples after you download to your keyboard?
The samples are not loaded into the keyboard, they were loaded into a sampler instrument (EXS24) on Logic Pro which was controlled by the keyboard ;)
@Diego_Reynoso Did you know that you played the "Souls Of Mischief-Let 'Em Know " bass line @ 0:47 ? LOL!
Also, how did you get the samples to loop while you held the notes?
AHAH LOL
@kojinmalia Thank you so much! And well, i've been also a fan since the beginning (1999)! I did played Homecoming and Shattered Memories, but honestly there's nothing like the first four... I liked your Nightmarish Waltz cover! Is that a Wolfgang guitar? It's beautiful! Thank you so much again for your comments! :)
Espero haberte ayudado. :)
Amazing! 😱 I loved SH since SH1 and it's my fav videogame. Never saw anything like this. I'm really amazed. Thank you
@PeronMiles I've just searched in the forum and it seems that it comes from a librarie called: 260db Drum and Bass Interface from AMG! :D
@cjsnw1 I really don't know how the sampler in FL Studio works, i haven't used FL in years, but, is not that complicated, i mean, the process should be the same in any sampler, just load the .wav file, maybe adjust a little your attack and release parameters and that's it, no pitch modification what so ever.
What are you changing with left hand before you start to play the actual notes used? sry I have no clue how synths work as I do not own one
+doop00 I'm just changing the octave of the keyboard.
+Diego_Reynoso Ok thanks I think I know what it means, great playing btw I love it
Can you tell me how you got this from the biggining. I want to play white noise on piano you know. Amazing stuff you showed in the vid. tnx for uploading
Haakon kibsgaard If you can't find the original samples you could always create samples from Akira's stuff. White Noiz would be easy to create a sample of!
Nice sound !
I got a question, I see that in your m-audio, green numbers change when you change the sound, does it mean you have importe sample to the synth or it's just when you change sound to your computer ? I've got a M-Audio Venom but it can't import samples i think, can you confirm me that ? Thanks
do you know what the chord is in the white noiz sample? sounds like a 9sus4
Pretty sure it's a Bb minor 9 voiced so that it stacks up from the 5th. You could also think of it as a polychord of Bb MI over FMI with another FMI stacked on top so that you have the 9th in the top voice. Hope that helps, cheers!
Hi! What are you playing these samples through?
@TheVGGP I reall don't know how you can do it on Cubase since i don't know if it has software instruments... If i remember well, Cubase supports VST/AU so you can get a VST Sampler and mount them on it! :)
Using samples from an album made from samples. This is so meta.
@TheVGGP Actually i was thinking that it would be cool to make another video but now using all the drum samples that i have! So i'll give it a try...
@PeronMiles I was going to ask you "which theme?" but either way i really don't remember were is it from... I got all the names of the libraries in the Silent Hill Heaven forum, maybe that could help...
@TheAPC91 Hi there! I really don't remember all the names but here are some of them: Bizarre Guitar and Distorted Reality from Spectrasonics, Smoke from Zero G, Spatial Awareness from SampleLab and... If i can remember more i'll tell you! Thanks!
I could say that I am disappointed about Akira Yamaoka's Music, but if you reflex about it, Akira still being a Great Musician, because, everything is done with things that another person did, even this loops were maked from sounds of software that he didnt create, and this applies to the Science too, like Newton, he said that he was able to accomplish what he did because he stood on the shoulders of giants....
how can you change the sound of the piano like that
How does it work? First you overlap various notes and change their tone and then you can play them with a single button?
@guitarhero0 How would I go about manipulating the Samples from the Sample ZIP using FL Studio 10 & it's Sampler. I'm trying to get the sound on The Day Of Night sample just right but I don't know what to set the semitones to (no negative integers) or where to put the pitch knob.
@karaokemaster666 Like the description says, you can found those samples in sound libraries like Bizare Guitar from Spectrasonics or Smoke from Zero G.
@TheVGGP It's actually a MIDI controller, i mount the sounds on EXS24 the sampler included in Logic Studio.
@PainLiesBeneath Thank you! And in my opinion no one will ever be able to take Akira's place in the SH series! :P It takes more than just use samples like this to understand the SH musical universe... Thanks again! :D
@PainLiesBeneath Actually is one of my favorites! I'll see what i can do about it! ;)
Nice! What brand keyboard is that?
chj2 its a M Audio KeyRig 25, but as I said before several times, the sounds do NOT come from the keyboard, the keyboard by itself have no sounds...
Hi, diego. ¿What piano VST do you use for that ethereal White Noiz sound? Thanks in advance.
¡Hi there! I used a software instrument called ESX24 which comes by default with Logic Pro. The sound itself comes from a sample library called Distorted Reality Vol. 2 from a company called Spectrasonic. Hope that helps!
Day of the night wasn’t quite right but close enough. Thanks for sharing.
sun is my favorite ost
The day I discovered the samples, nothing was ever the same
this is really good, you should sit down and see if you can do an original track! then you could just butt in and steal the job of the new composer lol
What keyboard ?
funny considering most of his songs use samples
The "Lost Horizon" sample also appears in Perfect Dark Zero, in the game over music.
@guitarhero0
Well, not saying replace Akira but the new composer. lol
Off-topic you should really do the song Life from SH3. I would love to see that one played. XD
hmmm ok that spectrasonic I have but it dosent want to install lol and sampling I know how to do I guess ill go buy the zero g samples.......by the way for butterfly room might you remeber which sample or libery it came from?
´beautiful !!! i want play this, what name your equipment??
Pablo Delson Hi! There's nothing special about the equipment, is the audio libraries the ones you should search. Zero G, Spectrasonics and East West are a few of the makers of the libraries Yamaoka uses...
+Diego_Reynoso and from which librairies the pads from "white noize" are? also do you got the name of the preset? thanks you
what is the sample (or synth whatever) used in "the terminal show"?
yeah don't worry I found it already
@@gunner6233 Mind sharing which one it is? Ive been looking for it as well
@@danbariani4371 It's the same as the one in promise I don't remember it's name rn
@@gunner6233 Thats it! Thanks, Man, Youre a life saver! its "called Atmos 12", from the library "AMG: 260db Drum & Bass Interface" (This video has a great breakdown of samples from SH1 to SH4 - ruclips.net/video/xpsXD_kCurQ/видео.html)
Tienes mucho talento! O_O
¡Muchas muchas gracias! :D
sooo... do I need to download these plug ins or are they sampled sounds? please excuse my ignorance lol
It's very interesting, thanks!
Awesome! Like someone else said, you should totally be the next SH composer. XD hehe
I didn't know you could even do this. haha
WOW
WOW
WOW!!!!
Me encantaría saber que fue lo que hiciste? de donde sacaste todas los track?
Did you stop smoking
Lol, no, unfortunately, I havent stopped... I smoke less tho...
oh wow thanks!!!!!!!!!!!! got lots of them im putting them in my kontakt sampler
Visitando mi SILENT HILL 🖤
so devo resting comfortably is in this :( my favourite song of the series
every time you hit the wrong notes I died inside just a little bit
I think you missed the whole point of the video... Those "wrong" notes are completely intentional...
@@diegoreynosomusic no I meant for when you started to play the actual song and then hit the wrong chords, I wasn't being serious anyways
JUST ONE WORD... AWESOME!
+Maurício Roberto Thanks!
awesome.... i'm glad i clicked this link
Can you upload Smoke from Zero-G? It would be great.
:D impresionante!!!!! los dejaste igualitos! :D!
so awesome to see how its made ... wow
how do you get these samples?
Incredible
Awesome as always, keep it up.
