I remembered around 2018 when many of the city garage sales have the original xbox consoles on sale for $5 each. People just wanted to get rid of them because they were bulky and the controllers were bulky. I didn't mind picking them all up. The ones that powered up and read game discs I turned around and sold them at eBay and Amazon. The ones that does not power on, I swapped with another parts console and if it able to read disc then sell that. The disc tray coming out issue or cd reading issue is usually the cd rubber band is too old and just replace with another for $1. Learned so much by buying these and trying to fix them. Even for $10 it is a good learning experience. In your case I would ask him what is the best price he can do for all 6. Most of the time can get them for $50 or even $40, which will make the deal even sweeter. If not no loss and at $60 still a great price.
What’s funny is everyone sees Matt at the leg island guy, I always see him as the guy who taught me to remove the clock capacitor to save my OG Xbox’s life
Ditching the disk drive is the first thing I do on any console. My 360 got last use ripping my games and I won't touch the drive anymore as there's simply no need. I'd rather not deal with belts if I can avoid it.
dvd drive/error 12; recap the drive pcb + checking the resistor packs on the pcb inline with the ide cable for dead packs. known problem (though not super well known). quite a few drives have been deemed dead, when some just needs these two things addressed. and some have a specific IC on the pcb that died, and short of replacing that chip, its toast.
Surprisingly good deal. Thrifting at Goodwill, I found a Gillette IPL hair removal system. Retail new around $200, average used asking prices around $100. Got it for $8.
Re arcing broken plug, I don't think the arcing caused the connector to come loose, I expect the connector took a knock and broke the pads, and that's what caused the arcing and burning
3:50 That's probably just a bad solder joint. Especially if they used low quality solder and the last owner plugged and unplugged the power cord, that probably started cracking the solder joint and having a loose connection. The PSU probably still works, it just needs a reflow of the solder joint with lots of flux.
The triple boot issue can also be caused (IIRC) by a corrupted or badly flashed BIOS (ask me how I know), I guess (I haven't checked myself) it could also be that the pin that enables the modchip could have gotten grounded somehow? And since there is none, it has nothing to boot from.
I had something super similar happen to my power supply in my original Xbox. I used to take that thing with my everywhere for LANs, so the plug was constantly being pushed in and pulled out. I had the same issue where the power plug had been ripped off the pad and put a giant scorch mark and would spark when plugging in it. I took the power supply to a local Jaycar Electronics store and the guy behind the counter very helpfully showed me where I should create a bridge with some copper wire. It ended up working and I think the same Xbox is still working today, although if it is I need to replace all the caps.
This wasn't recent, but many years ago, I bought three older consoles off of someone on Craigslist. It was a PS1, PS2, and Dreamcast, and all for only $20. Most of them even came with cords and at least one controller. - The PS1 turned on and ran just fine, but controller port 1 didn't seem to work. Cleaning it did the trick though. Weirdly, the spindle was missing those... thingies (teeth?) to grip the disc, but a little tape around it did the trick. Still works great to this day! - The Dreamcast worked... except controller port 1 again. Cleaning it also did the trick. That's all it took. - The PS2... it took some work. The controller ports all worked this time, but it wouldn't even turn on at first. Giving it a big ol' cleaning did the trick, but the disc drive was really faulty (it'd only sometimes successfully read a disc, and even then, it often took really long). Fortunately, it came with that... modem thingy on the back (I'm so good with technical terms), so I was able to install a Homebrew launcher on the memory card and run my games off the hard drive. I wish I knew how to properly fix the disc drive, but it's no biggie. Plus, one of the loaders lets me use my wireless PS3 controller, so that's pretty convenient! And it's a good thing I can do that, too; the official PS2 controller that came with it was in horrid condition. The plastic was cracked and... I've no idea why, but the left analogue stick worked fine until I pressed down on L3, and then it'd suddenly no longer get the full range. I had to unplug & replug it back in to get it to work right again. I had no idea how to fix this, until one day I discovered that pressing against the underside of the board (particularly those silver soldered pins) would actually stop it from messing up. I've no idea why, but pressing L3 again after that no longer messed it up. I placed a thin piece of plastic on the inside of the controller to keep some pressure on those pins, and thus the controller finally started working right! Or rather... it did, until about a year later, anyway. Suddenly, the buttons stopped working and the controller wouldn't stop vibrating, regardless of many times I unplugged and replugged it back in. If I had your smarts, I probably could've saved it... alas, I had no idea what to do, so I ended up throwing it away.
Awesome deal, I picked up a pair of OGs last year for £20 and they were both modded, one with an Aladdin and one with an X2.6 which is rare to see here now, also picked up 6 360s and another 4 OGs at one point with a "free" PS3 thrown in for good measure all for repairs, it's all good fun :) That 1.0 has the infamous Foxlink PSU which has no strap on the power socket. The only thing holding that sucker in is the solder joints which fail under stress of plugging/unplugging the console until eventually, it arcs and does what you've seen. Rather than recall and replace, Microsoft sent out a letter to everyone known to own a 1.0 and offered a free trip protection cable as a "patch". The fact it's now FRAGing is likely corroded traces on the very bottom of the board that run from around the clock cap area right across the board, they're super thin traces and corrode easily when cap goo goes everywhere, sometimes it looks like a tiny spec of dirt on the board.
Where you the guy trying to out bid me? LOL Should i replace the 2001 model clock cap even if it looks completely fine? Someone previously had some type of mod chip already attached when i opened it up, but i don't think it's necessary anymore. Still booted up fine after i tore it all the way down to individual parts and cleaned everything before i ever powered it on. *can i not do the spliter cell soft mod on my og xbox that has a double power pin instead of the single row for power?
This was an awesome find love, watching your videos! I recently found a Star Wars edition Xbox 360 the seller on Facebook marketplace said it didn’t work so sold to me for 10 bucks and when I opened it up all I did was clean the board replaced thermal paste and gave it a new power supply. Now it works awesome.
Fun fact about the PSU. The white "glue" used on these things gets porous over the years, and absorbs moisture from the air. This eventually makes it conductive enough to short stuff out...
That first xbox had the same issue as me on the psu! All that was wrong was that someone used too much force on the plug, and if you resolder the connections, it works great, can't say much for the mobo tho....
I'm glad I am not the only one who accidentally buys multiple Xboxes. I have 2 v1.6 boxes that need new caps....... It's a shame the caps I ordered got smushed in transit! 😁
a good deal i got was a complete risk so first of all i used buyee or whatever it was called thinking "oh yeah i got this voucher to get something thats like 20 quid dope" so i found a psp that the seller had no idea if it worked cause well he diddnt have a psp charger so i brought it then started having a panick attack cause you needed to pay for over sea shipping which i diddnt have the money for only like 3 quid and after doing research you could not only get fined a lot of money but also the thing you couldnt ship over seas basically got thrown away but i found out as a new user you get free oversea shipping so i basically got a free PSP that was modded on the latest firmware that ran perfectly and all i had to do was charge it and it had no scratches or anything really good condition
Not really Xbox related, but I did score a 3dfx Velocity 100 (basically a Voodoo 3 1000) for 30 bucks, when 3dfx cards typically go for somewhere over a hundred, so that was a pretty great steal.
Almost like how I accidentally bought 20 Xbox 360 consoles one time.. 20 for $200 on eBay as untested (surprisingly true it seems) a lot of them worked fine and on older dashboards including blades and jtaggable nxe dashboards I still have one I kept as it was my first ever jtag and still somehow works. 😅
4:20 I have the exact same problem. I too tried with a modchip but no luck. I haven't found a 1 to 1 replacement capacitor yet (and I haven't had the time to look) to test.
I recently bought a slim PS2 for R$ 350,00 (yes I'm Brazilian). It came with an original DualShock 2 and an original AV cable for free (not that I'll use them, I prefer Bluetoothing a DS4 and using an HDMI adapter), and the DVD drive, labeled as "dead" by the seller, does read discs, it just needs some... convincing. That's a good deal as far as I'm concerned! Normally, a slim PS2 with a working DVD drive would set me back around R$ 500,00, around the same as a modded PS3.
Lol that is exactly how I got my set of 3 OG Xboxes. Went in to a local retro game shop, needed og xbox parts, shop offered me multiple units of unknown condition at $10/ea. They surprisingly all worked so I used them to fix my xbox and now I have plenty of parts.
I remember when my dad accidentally bought a car. the car was "too cheap" on ebay. So he made a bid on it hoping to up the price to the final buyer. (why would you care if you don't want it). No one else bid on it. He won it. Did nothing with it and eventually sold it. The car he did intend to buy he barely touched. Eventually had it professionally restored. Over the years I think he probably spent about 30-40k on it for a car he rarely drives because it's a "classic".
I know this is old and I wish I’d seen it sooner but you could easily check continuity between two points for each of the traces that are known to fail.
That PSU issue looks like a dry/cracked solder joint - probably exacerbated by the force applied to the power plug being inserted and removed. That's why it's sparking - because it isn't making proper contact. I've seen that issue on Xbox PSUs before at least. It's unlikely that this would damage anything much further down the line, but it can definitely damage the PSU PCB and surrounding components. It is of course possible that the constant voltage spikes (or just heat from the PCB) fried something else in the PSU that in turn killed something on the motherboard, which would be rather tricky to track down (though hunting for shorts, injecting voltage and looking for hot spots, and tracing voltages across the motherboard to see if they suddenly disappear somewhere tends to all be useful methods).

My only OG Xbox is a 1.6. It takes an Aladdin modchip and works just as good as any other revision. Plus there's no worry of the clock cap in the 1.6.
What’s funny is everyone sees Matt at the leg island guy, I always see him as the guy who taught me to remove the clock capacitor to save my OG Xbox’s life
this literally happened to a friend of mine a couple weeks ago lmao. basically the same convo, but ps3s, 8 units for 50 bucks. absolutely insane
Woah - a new video from the Lego Island guy
Lego Island XBox port, when?
They will multiply if left unsupervised
Try replacing the 5 CPU filter caps, even if they don't look bad they can cause issues with boot looping, have had it on multiple occasions now!
Surprisingly good deal.
Thrifting at Goodwill, I found a Gillette IPL hair removal system. Retail new around $200, average used asking prices around $100. Got it for $8.
0:37 shoulda called it the xbox first
Re arcing broken plug, I don't think the arcing caused the connector to come loose, I expect the connector took a knock and broke the pads, and that's what caused the arcing and burning
3:50 That's probably just a bad solder joint. Especially if they used low quality solder and the last owner plugged and unplugged the power cord, that probably started cracking the solder joint and having a loose connection. The PSU probably still works, it just needs a reflow of the solder joint with lots of flux.
You better be backing up those HDDs.
Controversial take but I think one (small) reason the Xbox does less well is because the naming conventions are insane.
The triple boot issue can also be caused (IIRC) by a corrupted or badly flashed BIOS (ask me how I know), I guess (I haven't checked myself) it could also be that the pin that enables the modchip could have gotten grounded somehow? And since there is none, it has nothing to boot from.
He says he tried installing a modchip but it also didn't boot
if the first one turns out to really be a parts machine, may I suggest swapping out the sixth one's DVD drive with the first one's?
I had something super similar happen to my power supply in my original Xbox. I used to take that thing with my everywhere for LANs, so the plug was constantly being pushed in and pulled out. I had the same issue where the power plug had been ripped off the pad and put a giant scorch mark and would spark when plugging in it. I took the power supply to a local Jaycar Electronics store and the guy behind the counter very helpfully showed me where I should create a bridge with some copper wire. It ended up working and I think the same Xbox is still working today, although if it is I need to replace all the caps.
"Silly capacitor, that's what the toilet is for!"
Wow that's a lot to classic Xboxes you there and a double the same color too
Petition for Matt to make a video on the 5 other xboxes
Awesome deal, I picked up a pair of OGs last year for £20 and they were both modded, one with an Aladdin and one with an X2.6 which is rare to see here now, also picked up 6 360s and another 4 OGs at one point with a "free" PS3 thrown in for good measure all for repairs, it's all good fun :)
That 1.0 has the infamous Foxlink PSU which has no strap on the power socket.
Me back when I brought 4 xboxs for $40
coming 2025 : I (accidentally) bought 353 more Xboxes
1:18 I don't know why, but that made me laugh XD
5 million beers, 500 cigarettes, and 6 xbox's, its all coming together.
I got an ps1 in almost perfect condition for 25 euros, with a controller! i would say thats a pretty good deal too
Whacked! System Link party with MattKC when?
Fun fact about the PSU. The white "glue" used on these things gets porous over the years, and absorbs moisture from the air. This eventually makes it conductive enough to short stuff out...
surprising good deal I had recently: bought an original fat DS for
That first xbox had the same issue as me on the psu! All that was wrong was that someone used too much force on the plug, and if you resolder the connections, it works great, can't say much for the mobo tho....
Can't wait for the XBox port of Lego Island.
The power jack issue is easy to resolve. Remove all of the old solder, reflow with a ton of leaded solder, done.
on the bright side you can easily set up Halo and Star Wars Battlefront lan parties
I'm glad I am not the only one who accidentally buys multiple Xboxes. I have 2 v1.6 boxes that need new caps....... It's a shame the caps I ordered got smushed in transit! 😁
I love all of Matt's videos.
a good deal i got was a complete risk so first of all i used buyee or whatever it was called thinking "oh yeah i got this voucher to get something thats like 20 quid dope" so i found a psp that the seller had no idea if it worked cause well he diddnt have a psp charger so i brought it then started having a panick attack cause you needed to pay for over sea shipping which i diddnt have the money for only like 3 quid and after doing research you could not only get fined a lot of money but also the thing you couldnt ship over seas basically got thrown away but i found out as a new user you get free oversea shipping so i basically got a free PSP that was modded on the latest firmware that ran perfectly and all i had to do was charge it and it had no scratches or anything really good condition
Not really Xbox related, but I did score a 3dfx Velocity 100 (basically a Voodoo 3 1000) for 30 bucks, when 3dfx cards typically go for somewhere over a hundred, so that was a pretty great steal.
surprisingly good deals time. i got a set of $3k klipsch speakers missing the sub for $300 total from goodwill at the end of last year
Almost like how I accidentally bought 20 Xbox 360 consoles one time.. 20 for $200 on eBay as untested (surprisingly true it seems) a lot of them worked fine and on older dashboards including blades and jtaggable nxe dashboards I still have one I kept as it was my first ever jtag and still somehow works. 😅
You should really promote this channel more often on your main one. I only found this by accident a few months ago.
They surprisingly all worked so I used them to fix my xbox and now I have plenty of parts.
damn it, i hate it when i "accidentally" buy 6 Xboxes but now i know what to do with them! TanksMatt!
The 1.6 is worthless to you? Send it to me XD
When you're Australian and not particularly lucky but by God, some guy is offering cheap Xboxes.
I know this is old and I wish I’d seen it sooner but you could easily check continuity between two points for each of the traces that are known to fail.
Matt is making a supercomputer by daisy-chaining Xbox's
well atleast that dead 1.0 might have a working DVD drive for that other one that had a completely dead drive in it
That PSU issue looks like a dry/cracked solder joint - probably exacerbated by the force applied to the power plug being inserted and removed.
I also have 6 Xbox's. Also all in various working states. Glad to see I'm not alone in being crazy.
common issue. it's called "trace rot" and it's pretty simple to fix with couple wires
I didn't even realize this was a bytes channel upload until I looked at the comments and wondered why the video was so short.
It feels so wrong to see 6 Xboxes on matt's table.
Its like a textbook math question. If MattKC buys 6 xboxes and 2/3 of them aren't functional, how many working xboxes does he have?
