    Side notes:
    If you do find a random xbox in the back of the closet, when testing it, it is a good idea to plug the av cable in too. don't have to connect it to a tv just have it in the back. The xbox will throw a flashing green and orange ring light error if the av is not plugged in. People think the xbox is dead, but its fine just needs av of some kind so it can set the video output resolution on boot and will halt the system till it can.
    On v1.6 xbox the clock cap is the gold one up near the IDE port, not at the front like others, Yeah it can leak but we still got a few years.
    The caps you replaced are CPU filter caps and power conditioning caps.
    TBH I have not seen the power conditioning caps fail but I don't work on xboxs as much as I did back in the day.
    power conditioning caps is probs what killed this xbox, cant boot if the hole system doesn't have any power rails.
    CPU filter caps are weird, when thay fail and depending on how bad the xbox will still sorta work but DO NOT RUN THE XBOX WITHOUT THEM.
    When they are damaged you will find games will sometimes load the main menu but crash or get stuck when loading the first map, game overall is just really slow, when trying to do more complex things like a TSOP the homebrew will boot but then just fail to right or find the TSOP. If they are totally cooked or removed then the xbox will just get stuck in the boot splash or the system os screen.
    Yeah your dvd drive is probs just dirty / full of a lot of dust.
    Alright, till next time

A quick dusting, clock cap removal, drive cleaning, and mod chip later, it's still one of the cheapest consoles I ever got ($30 including the mod chip).

    Samsung disc drives always tend to break the most when it came to the OG Xbox, 2nd being the Thomson drives. Finding replacement lasers for your disc drive is expensive as hell but they're out there. Looks like that drive is a Ver. A drive, it may need an SOH-DX1 laser. Hope this helps but it's okay if you dont give a shit lmao, I don't blame you. I'd mod the thing and install the games into the hard drive, too!

    Matt, fwiw (from audio optical drive experience), tired/slipping drive belts can mean weak drive clamping, which means the disc isn't spinning at the expected speed when the drive tries to read the TOC. A cheap/easy check on that drive is a belt swap, I think. Thanks for lots of great videos. Did an condition inventory of my OG Xboxes over the holidays and was reminded of your clock cap vid.

    • @MultiWirth
      @MultiWirth 2 года назад +2

      the belt is only for the disk drive to open and close the lid, what would this have to do with the disc spinning or not (or too slow) ?

    • @MrJohannVegas
      @MrJohannVegas 2 года назад +5

      @@MultiWirth in some cd-rom/dvd drives, the same belt-driven rack that moves thd drive sled also tilts/moves the block holding the motor (and drive spindle) and optical block and rails. This allows the disc to clear the drive spindle when it is shuttled in and out of the drive. If the belt slips, the whole assembly isn't lifted back up all the way, meaning the disc isn't clamped tightly between the drive spindle and the clamping hub on the top, so the disc slips during spinup. (Also something I have witnessed on laserdisc)
      Edit: "transport". Not sure why I couldn't remember it's called a transport.

      @UNSCPILOT 2 года назад

      Done a belt swap on a big ol Yamaha multi disk changer (CDC-805) a little while back, it's amazing seeing it spring back to life like nothing was wrong, plays music great too, with some dusting and cleaning it looks great still too.
      It's a surprising amount of fun to maintain and use some nice retro tech since it can be as good or sometimes better than modern equivalents, and old consoles like the Xbox never stop being cool

    I like to watch repair channels on RUclips.
    I always find it so satisfying when the warranty sticker gets removed intact.
    For the Xbox you can use IPA to loosen to glue and peel back the sticker slightly to get to the screw.
    They usually use a thin blade to start removing the sticker.

    Something interesting I noticed is while the board is the 1.6 revision and it has the Samsung cd drive that can be in any version, it has a WD hard drive instead of a Seagate, which are usually only found in later 1.0s to 1.2 models. Kind of interesting that the WD drives were used that late in the console’s lifespan.

I decided to try and finish fixing it recently replacing all 5 as I wasn't sure if it was just 1 or all so I thought might aswell change them all. Got the job done and the beauty booted first go! I was so pleased with myself 😂
    I also removed the clock on my v1.4 board last year around the same time, I did try to replace it but it didn't work so the old cap must have damaged the traces (might have another go soon) but otherwise the console is working fine. 😊

    I don't know why i didn't realize that the same guy who does Lego Island videos was the same one who informed me about the Xbox capacitors. Thanks a bunch Matt, you saved my Xbox.

    My Xbox died for apparently no reason, and it seems to have the same bulging caps as shown here. I ordered new ones, hopefully when I get around to replacing them it'll work.

    2 things: a) all OG XBox need to be "refurbished"
    b) you used the wrong caps. A suitable alternative to Nichicon HM (6,3V/3300µF, **11-13mOhm Impedance**, the PW used in the video are NOT suitable due to high Impedance. Haven't looked at Nichicon, but Panasonic FM and FR in 16V/3300µF would have been a suitable replacement.
    The Impedance of the Capacitor is no less important than the capacity in modern, high frequency SMPS!!!
    Voltage rating is only relevant because it influences Impedance, other than that, as long as its higher than the voltage used in the circuit. Though, due to the Impedance, you sometimes have to go with rather high voltage ratings like 16 or 25V for a 6,3V Capacitor.

    I modded a Halo 2 Edition 1.4 for a friend a couple years ago and went through all of the emulators, setting them all of for 720p, locking down all the controller settings, etc. The second he took it home and turned it on - nothing. It was dead. Here it was the capacitors underneath the CPU (left of the PSU). You never know when that's going to happen, and I've noticed capacitors die a lot after their first few hours of uptime after a long time of not being powered on at all.

    Thanks to the clock capacitor video I pulled my OG xbox out and removed it. It didn't look bad but sure enough it was starting to leak. Another xbox has been saved.

    my favourite console to fix, i have 7 xboxes and replaced all caps on it, two of them also had all caps leaking including the clock (was not a 1.6), i recommend replacing all the 3300uF caps even if they look good to be honest (like you did but you had to :) )
    love your videos, thanks for sharing

    My Crystal Xbox died in the exact same way...except it spat the juices on to the hard drive and it was still plugged in when it happened. I replaced the caps, and she's alive again!
