Keyframing is one of those words that scares a lot of people off when it comes to video editing. Today I'm going to change all that.
Let me walk you through some very basic keyframing features in DaVinci Resolve so that you can learn how to automate all kinds of things like movement in your video, your audio levels, transitions and MORE!

I am an editor and consultant to authors and content copy writers; and am always most conscience to be clear and concise with my instructions to them. Daniel, you are an exceptional content creator in the same vein. Keep up the excellent work here, my friend!
@VIGPLAYS in the Edit page, select a clip, press Ctrl-R and speed up a clip with the top part that appears on the right side of the clip. (Or click the triangle next to the "100%" that also appears under the clip.)
You absolutely are a ROCK STAR! Each of your video's are a true work of art and flow like music to ones ears. Thank you for all the time and effort you put into this.
I’m a total noob to editing in general. Da Vinci resolve is the first editing software I’ve ever used. Im going to get good at it too.
Finally understand what key frames are and so for me it’s bye-bye to cutting the frames to make my effects or changing volume etc !
There are a lot of tutorials on RUclips but very few from people who actually know how to teach. Thank you for sharing in such a digestible, comprehensive manner!
Glad it was helpful!
Daniel is like the teacher that you actually like in school. Great vid!
Thanks! 😃
You are making a great job with this series, DaVinci Resolve need more basic tutorials to help people switch from anything else, basically. It is the ultimate multiplatform video production app. And studio version is not brutally expensive, and hopefully stays like this and not become a subscription base.
Totally agree.
With every one of these, I get more advanced users telling me "You forgot to mention blah, blah, blah!!" and that's exactly the kind of stuff that confuses most new users. The need to mention every possibility along the way instead of just showing people some basics and keeping it SIMPLE.
@@Daniel_Batal Exactly, first baby steps. There will be time for marathon running later :)
@@Daniel_Batal I haaaaate when they overload you with information. I'm a beginner guy! Not your freaking collegue! They are the worst teachers ever!
" studio version is not brutally expensive, and hopefully stays like this and not become a subscription base."
And if you buy their speed editor or keyboard, studio license comes free.
@@Daniel_Batal An excellent introduction to key frames in this software. Thank you. Also, keeping it simple is best. My father, as a photographer, always stressed that simplicity, rather than complexity, is the goal. Your tutorial was to the point, very understandable, and really taught as much as any editor using key frames needs to know (personally, a LumaFusion user but stepping into the DaVinci world thanks to a Sigma fp camera!).
the simplest Tutorial ever...it's mindblowing that this is free....
☮️❤️
This is amazing, I just downloaded Davinci a few weeks ago and as someone with absolute 0 editing experience I was cutting the clips and then applying the effects to the smaller clips then rendering everything together. Until I thought,"There is no way this is the intended way to edit a video" LMAO
Your project, your rules ☮️❤️
I still can't believe how much comes with the free version of Resolve. Not to mention how simple a lot of this stuff is compared to other free editors.
Totally agree, Tim. I personally thinik the Studio version is worth the price for the extra features, especially GPU accleration, but I'm shocked how much they just give away for free.
Thank you for 'spoon feeding' us Noobies! I've watched so many tutorials on Davinci for beginners, that my brain cells are smoking! 🤯 They are good videos, but when I go to work on my project and encounter a 'road block', I struggle to remember which video discussed it. (Not to mention WHERE in the video it was mentioned.) So yeah, thank you for these short basic step by step tutorials.
My pleasure!
- a fellow Noob
I appreciate this video. Da Vinci is a bit overwhelming for me. Trying to get a grasp on it and this video definitely helps. Keep ‘em coming brother.
It can be super daunting, David. Don't let that dissuade you. Once you find your flow it suddenly all starts to make sense
@@Daniel_Batal I'm a perfectionist and a n00b.............this combo puts projects into the overwhelming mode super fast. Thanks for what you do.
Before I stumbled upon this tutorial, I was disappointed with RUclips University: People simply could not teach what they were doing. Thanks for your effort. 👍👍The best!
I started searching for tutorials on Da Vinci Resolve. After going through an endless number of different channels, i can assure everyone that Daniel is the best one. The clarity in explaining the concepts in unmatched.
Wow, thanks! I appreciate the kind words ☮️
So basic and eay to follow! Thanks Daniel💙
You're so welcome!
A guy who plays the guitar can also teach DaVinci Resolve! Hell Yeah you can! Thanks for the tuts and keep shredding mate! A big thank you from Australia!
👊😎🤘🎸
In the process of changing from premier to resolve. Thank you for this fantastic video I think you are very thorough yet simple to understand. Great qualities.
You're very welcome!
I am a mentor/editor for writers, and am always most aware to be clear and concise with my instructions to them. Daniel, you are an exceptional content creator in the same vein. Keep up the excellent work here, my friend!
Hey thanks! I appreciate that
@@Daniel_Batal You're most welcome, Daniel! You've now got me looking into DaVinci Resolve as an alternative video editor; so I am looking foward to more excellent content on that program from you.
After looking several tutorials, you are the best!!. Your speed, voice and examples are just perfect for me. Thanks!!
Appreciate people like you brother helping out the rest of us
Happy to do it.
The more creators out there crushing it, the better off we all are ☮️❤️
I was going to leave a jokey comment about the bassist from Slayer being a pretty good DaVinci Resolve tutor but instead I want to say a sincere "thanks" to you Daniel for your awesome tutorials. I have watched a bunch and they are incredibly helpful. Cheers!
Well I truly appreciate that, Justin!
And don't worry, about 6,000 people have already made that joke before you without the good sense to consider how many times I've already heard it.
Hell, we even took a vote last year to settle the "Who does Daniel look like" debate! 😆---> ruclips.net/user/postUgkxSUQ7j-8U1W-GIWG-k3Umg8TFtFbV71Be
Thank you! I’ve had a hard time wrapping my head around keyframes. I think I have it now 😊
It takes a minute because the functionality can go really deep. Once you kind of understand they're just a set of instructions you're teaching the software and you can determine the parameters, it starts to make a lot more sense.
So helpful! thank you! had no idea I could adjust audio with keyframes, I was cutting the audio and adjusting the slider bar :D
Glad it helped!
One very useful tip when keyframing - you can right-click your keyframe dot in the Inspector panel to change the keyframe from linear to Ease In, Easy In/Out & Ease Out! You can also do this from the keyframe view on the timeline and get more advanced but doing it from the Inspector panel is fast & easy when you only need to slightly tweak the motion to be less harsh.
I discovered your channel only recently, but I've been delving deep into your catalog of content and have been enjoying it very much so far. I picked up DaVinci Resolve last summer after having used Premiere Pro for almost a decade, and I'm incredibly glad to have made the switch. Seeing you cover DaVinci Resolve is great because you're really good at explaining things, and putting more eyes onto a great piece of software is always good!
The wave feature in the bottom of each clip actually allows you to control the keyframe interpolation behavior with a little more accuracy. I didn't want to touch any of that for obvious reasons. Explaining keyframe interpolation behavior to anyone in a video trying to just get them started is exactly what I don't like about every other DaVinci Resolve video I see on RUclips.
Thanks Daniel! I have been using this program for just about a year and had not noticed this feature 🤣 This is going to come in so handy! Thanks for explaining this to us noobs. VERY much appreciated
Happy to help!
Finally, i understood what keyframes are...thanks to your wonderful, easy to understand explanation 🙏
Glad it was helpful!
Nice. Direct, simple, and focused. I am so new to all this that I REALLY appreciate that you took ONE topic and went over it several times. I'm weaning myself from Wondershare and DaVinci is a whole new paradigm, so it takes me a moment or two to rewrap my brain about basic tasks. Thank you for helping me.
Totally understand. DaVinci has SO many features that it can be overwhelming. I'm trying my best to keep it simple.
Leigh, I, too, began a couple of years ago w Filmora Pro, and when they discontinued decided to go with Davinci, which I love, but it can be overwhelming, and vids like this one are a BIG help to me!
Thanks so much, @Daniel-Batal!
Love how you just explain it so easily! Thinking of converting to Resolve from Filmora 12, but as expected, the fear of change creeps up and we always fall back to the comfortable things. We are hoping you will continue to give more techniques and make more great videos so the fear of change goes away. Thanks for sharing!
Just dive in.
These videos tank my channel but I'm not afraid to make a few to help the people who are really struggling with using what is clearly a better video editing software.
I dived in last night after watching a few of Dan's anti-Filmora/Pro-DaVinci vids. I film at 105,000kbps but I can't get more than 66,000kbps export on FILMORA 12, nobody knows why, I've just exported at 2,300,000kbps on DaVinci! 86gb for a 1min vid!
I'm a software dev learning this stuff for fun and personal projects. I love your approach to explanations! Almost fell over when you mentioned 'set of instructions'. Also, the term 'Key Frame' is far less murky now.
Glad this was helpful!
I wish everyone teach as you do things would have been easy,
I so much love how you make everything so simple to understand thank you 🙏
Wow, thank you!
Ugh, I wish I knew about Keyfames on Saturday! haha I spent hours cutting my video up into a thousand clips so that I could adjust the audio of each clip. Thank you for this tutorial and the last one... I am so looking forward to editing more of my gaming videos with DR!
Only a master can make it this simple! Thank you
No master here! I’m the HNIC (Head Noob in Charge) 😜
Just built a new PC with a proper graphics card and installed Davinci Resolve. It works! Going to work through your tutorials over the next week to get used to it.
What did you get for a graphics card?
@@Daniel_Batal RTX3050. Only because we had a genuine used one in the family. Resolve gave me the "tick" when I installed it. Probably overkill.
comes in handy just in time, and it brings back so many sweet memories, I used DaVinci many years ago and just went back to it. You should have make tutorials back then and I never would have switched.
I like this new series and greatly appreciate you giving an explanation of some of the terms and names of things. Some of us are brand new to this and may not know what keyframing is and this helps not only with learning the software but the names and meanings of certain industry terms that are used. Thanks again
Glad you enjoyed it!
Simple, Understanding, to the Point, and as always Cheerful and Smiling.....
I had no idea you could keyframe audio. I thought it was only for video. Thanks for the information as always. Learned something very interesting today! Keep it up!
You bet!
An excellent short video on explaining keyframing which others fail to do as they overly complicate it. My only criticism is the use of the term 'dot' when in fact it should be 'diamond' when referring to the keyframing icon. Looking forward to further tutorials.
Ha! You did exactly what I hate about Resolve tutorials on RUclips, you overcomplicated a conversation by using words people can't relate to.
The shape of the keyframe feature is a diamond shape in the color page and it's a dot in the media page (where I was working from)
So... it's a dot. Because real people know what a dot looks like and what a diamond looks like.
Here's the good thing, these videos tank my channel and I am only doing them to help folks who are petrified of Resolve.
You won't have to suffer with my dots for long 😜
@@Daniel_Batal sorry, but I was trying to be offensive, and yes, people will know the difference between a dot and a diamond. However, the vast majority of your references to the keyframe icon were in the Inspector window (which you zoomed into both in the Video and Audio tabs), and in that area it's a diamond (as opposed to the red dots next to Transform, Cropping, etc). That was the only reason for mentioning it. I did notice that in the audio timeline it was a dot.
Man I can't thank you enough for you videos. I was trying to figure this out, and even watch other RUclips videos on the subject, but you made it look so easy, without all the technical stuff. Now I got it. Peace man.
Right on.
There is, obviously, more to it but that should at least get you going down the road to understanding how keyframing can totally be something you can tackle without fear.
Key framing was a method I was aware of, but didn't have time to review, thanks for this. I was fading my audio using edits, this is a better method.
That was very helpful. It now makes a lot more sense. I thought there would have been a lot more steps then what it was. Thank you. Keep up the great work ROCK STAR.
There is definitely more to it and you can do a TON more but that should get you started with confidence.
I’ve been using Resolve for many years and have the Studio version. I must say that your tutorials are probably the clearest I’ve seen
Extremely rudimentary and I'm skipping over a lot of information but... I kind of think that's why people are scared of Resolve. Too many places to go down the rabbit hole of what each feature can do in totality.
I just want to show people how to start the car, steer it, where the gas & brake pedal are and let them drive.
@@Daniel_Batal exactly! It’s so easy to get lost in the software. A good basic grounding is essential
Daniel, please keep the Davinci videos coming. I can actually learn from you. We both speak the language, "Dude".
Very nice and easy to understand explanations.
By far, you have made the best guides for Davinci Resolve for me. You are great at giving a fuller picture and purpose to everything you explain and you never waste my time. Thanks again. Great vid!
Much appreciated!
When I saw that music video, this is exactly what I was hoping for, some tutorials on how you used Davinci Resolve to make it happen.
Best Keyframes explanation..... Natural born teacher....many thanks
Wow, thank you!
Another excellent how to! Thanks again Daniel!
Glad you liked it!
Love that you have moved to DaVinci. it's an unreal free program . I'm almost ready to pull the trigger on the paid version. not out of necessity, just because I'm using it that much and loving it.
Thank you ! I'm transitioning from premiere to Davinci and these video are saving me a lot of time !! Very clear indeed....
Great to hear!
The volume keyframing is wild! Can't wait to use this feature. Thanks Daniel.
Good Morning Daniel 🌞 hope you have an Amazing Monday 🤗 thanks for sharing🙌🏽
You too, my friend!
@@Daniel_Batal thank you 😊
no convoluted crap or skipping through stuff at the speed of light like video production is second nature :D great video!
Thanks! I appreciate that.
Another easy to follow video, thanks.
Thank you very much, I will try my best to use every information you've provided 👍🙌
👊😎☮️
Maté again I’ve learnt from you. No need for me to duplicate and add audio tracks to change volume , cheers brother much love from Vegimite country haha
Hi Daniel. I just come across your channel the other day and I just want to tell you that your videos help me with my confidence. My wife started posting videos on RUclips of our bounce house rental company we started last year.We are getting closer to 1000 sub and now I want to start editing and making the videos myself. It’s very overwhelming but I’ve always been good at everything I’ve tried to do in my life. I just wanted to say thanks.
That’s awesome! ❤️
Found what I was looking for ...I knew you would show how to manually move tue keyframe along the time line 🎉always the first go to for tutorials
You can click that diamond on the lower right of the clip in the timeline and it’ll show you all of those keyframes.
I think I showed them in the curve window
This is incredibly helpful, as I transition from PowerDirector I'm finding Resolve much more up-front with it's features instead of hiding them behind layers of menus. Changing audio levels were such a pain (for me), Resolve makes it so much easier. Thanks Daniel.
Once again Grandmaster "B" fails to disappoint. I am slowly moving toward D.R. after being a Filmora patron. I have learned so much from you over the last few years, much appreciated it is. This is a bit of a learning curve but I think it will be worth it. Tanks Mon!
Been using DR for years and you still showed me some things I. Didn't know! Awesome job all around
I'm liking it a lot. The Studio version and the Speed Editor are a great combo.
@@Daniel_Batal I've had both for a couple years now, and haven't ever hooked the speed editor up. I guess I'm scared of it, 😂. I mostly got Studio for the AI upscaling, which is so much faster than rendering out of Unreal in 4k, but I'm really enjoying the other Studio features. Was definitely a great investment.
I bought Filmora last year and because of you, I'm changing to Davinci Resolve 😂🤣
Hands down the best Davinci Resolve tutorials on RUclips
Thanks you so much! That really means a lot ☮️
More Resolve content please. Don't stop ❤️❤️❤️
I'll make a few. As you can see, these tank my channel. I make them for people who are struggling.
Thank you! I finally understand what a keyframe is and what I can do with it.
TYTYTYTY. You make this so much easier than other people.
👊😎☮️
LIked and followed. SUPER helpful to understand where the keyframes are in DV and how they operate.
Thanks!
Thanks Daniel for all your help. I will try out this new software . Once again, Gracias.!
Best of luck!
Fantastic explanation Daniel…DR to rule the world! 😎👍🏻
Wow this is actually very helpful. I am going to employ Keyframes more now.
They are SO powerful ☮️
very nice boosted my confidence 100x in making videos!
That's great!
Saved the Resolve Playlist.
I hope you get a great following from this.
Cheers.
Unfortunately, these tend to tank my channel. Not very broad appeal. I only do them for the content creators who are out there struggling.
Cool ! I was using the rasor to seperate the frame to make them different ! Game changer ! Thanks !
Thanks, I have been using DaVinci for two years, but never really went in to too much detail except basic cuts. Love the videos so far, and now I may learn how to use the program proper.
Please someone should give this man RUclips's Best Tutor award 🏅.
☮️❤️
Great help thank you!
Glad it helped!
You are an amazing teacher. Thank you very much.
You're very welcome!
Excellent, the tip at 6:56 is a key takeaway for me, along with dragging audio keyframes. Thanks.
Glad that was helpful, Craig!
You do an amazing job on these DaVinci Resolve videos. Thank you!
Hey thanks! I really appreciate that
These Davinci videos are sweet. I’ve been watching them.
Glad you like them!
Daniel - THANK YOU so much for these amazing videos!!! You're a hero AND a Rockstar!
My pleasure!
This is very helpful, especially for me, who has no reason, nor the competence on how to learn editing
Glad it was helpful!
This is really kind and motivating. Thank you Daniel! My son (who makes custom guitars) is going through a horrible child custody battle too.
So Great to Follow. I believe everyone can benefit from these Videos. Thank you💜👍
It's great to see our mentor started to make videos on something more advanced. Good day Dani 👌
Good morning!
Dude, your instructional videos are excellent! Your knowledge of the software and eye for editing are certainly impressive, but what I find particularly refreshing is the level of your communication skills. It stands out as something I don't encounter that readily.
Wow, thanks!
Thank you so much! I cannot describe the amount of mental anguish I suffered while trying to figure out how to do this! I just never knew it was called keyframing
Sir! You are a legend. I request you to become a professor of Video Editing.😊 Much love
Thank you so much 😀
OHHHHHHH!!! i'm going to try this now !! Thanks Daniel !!
Glad you are doing this. Slowly moving from Fimora as it my machine has the updrade to handle Da Vinci now. Will need to learn how to green screen in DaVinci for my content type comfortably before I can fully switch over. Maybe that's a good suggestion for a video for you to do?
I just discovered your channel and subscribed immediately. I used to some video editing many years ago (early 2000s), and recently decided to get back into it. Much to my surprise, the software I used has gone subscription based so I've been searching for a more affordable alternative, and Davinci is what I chose.
This is the best explanation of keyframe use I've ever seen. Your videos are really helping me adjust to the learning curve. Thank you so very much!
Awesome! Thank you! I’ve got a 30 day learning challenge happening right now. One new short Resolve tip a day
I love that you're explaining key frames so well for people who've never encountered them. You missed a bit of info for me I'm afraid. You popped up the video key frames in the timeline but I didn't see what you clicked on or if you hit keys. If you did... ignore me. I just missed it. I'm after all the interface information you've figured out. I've been editing videos for a very long time with older software. I'm also after any of the cool stuff you've figured out Resolve can do. Your manner of teaching will help the broadest possible spectrum of interested viewers. And that's great.
I apologize if I missed anything for your personal experience.
I was hoping that you'd walk away from the video as a whole and think, "Okay... I kinda get it now. I can do that"
@@Daniel_Batal Babe! You're disseminating a lot of info. You're going to miss a bit here or there. I just want you to maintain that "Imagine the viewer knows NOTHING!" mindset. And you'll be sure to cover what everyone wants to know. Great job!
This is a great video I have been using Davinci Resolve Studio for quite some time and did not know exactly what that was for but now I do this is going to be fun!! Thanks so much Daniel, Davinci Resolve rules!!
How about a quick tutorial about how to normalize audio to optimal LUFS levels for RUclips in Davinci Resolve?
I've been a Premiere user for longer than I care to admit, but your videos got me interested in Davinci Resolve and I've been utterly blown away by how ergonomic the workflow is! I'd just gotten used to Premiere and the constant fiddling and extra steps needed to anything, and this editor is truly a breath of fresh air. I love the inbuilt audio tools, but I've not found how to normalize the final audio to a specific LUFS level yet.
Keep up the great work! And by the way "I'm not a Rock Star" is on my regular Spotify playlist because it's just a fun song.
It’s in the audio tab under the project settings menu.
Thank you! You do a great job of explaining things. I appreciate you making these videos!
You're very welcome!
I've been using DR for more than 5 years and @@:222 you say "If you click on the Footage down in the timeline, in the upper right the INSPECTOR opens up. HOW? It sure doesn't open the Inspector for me no matter How I CLICK on a (CLIP) Piece of Footage (Left/Right/Center/Wheel). That being said This is the BEST Explanation of USING KEY FRAMES I've ever seen. That includes a lot of Really Great DR Instructors. Daniel Great to have you as my new DR instructor.
In the upper right, make sure you have the inspector selected sand that you’re in the edit page
@@Daniel_Batal You already had the Inspector (OPEN ) Just nothing SELECTED on the Timeline. Sorry a Problem with Semantics of OPEN & SELECT. One Selects the CLIP on theTimlie and then opens the Inspector. in your case you already had the Inspector OPEN then Clicked on the CLIP/FOOTAGE in the timeline and it POPULATED the INSPECTOR. It did not OPEN the Inspector. It is Very important to use the Correct Terminology when Instructing, Especially Newbees. (YES/NO)?
Thank you, I was looking for this yesterday and everyone explains it, but I didn't understand it, they would show you how to set the key frame, but wouldn't mention that the key frame red dot disappears when you move the needle, and no one explains the history (left and right arrow), this helps a lot. I was going to skip doing what I had in my head, but I may take care of that tonight, thank you.
Right on, Iggy. One of the big things that I mentioned in the video but I probably could have mentioned sooner is that each video clip or segment in your timeline has a tiny little "keyframe" icon in the lower right of each that you can click on and see the keyframes you added.
It opens up a drop-down window that appears below that video segment right in the timeline and it's super helpful when you start adding a lot of keyframes.
@@Daniel_Batal yeah, I noticed that, only because I found it by mistake, and when you did it, I thought, "oh yeah, thats what that is for". One thing that may help, if at all possible, is like Filmora had, a way to copy effects of a clip and paste it on another clip, it would really help. Because what I am trying to do is show a clip, then zoom out of the clip to give people the bigger picture, I have already cut the clip though, it so I need to copy everything from one clip to another, its hard and time consuming to do it 1 by 1. Is there a way to do it, maybe idea for another clip?
You actually can do that, Iggy.
In the Edit page, right click on the clip in your timeline that has the attributes you want to copy and choose "COPY". Then right click on the clip(s) you want to share those attributes to and select "Paste Attributes".
It will open up a window that allows you to select from any or all of the attributes you want to share to the other clip(s).
MUCH more functional than Filmora's simple PASTE EFFECTS option
@@Daniel_Batal thanks Daniel, just did the zoomed in image to the fully zoomed out because of this, thank you. I will look in a bit about the copying, thanks again.
@@Daniel_Batal copy/paste attributes is AMAZING, thank you, saved me so much time
Just upgraded to DaVinci Resolve for editing my own RUclips channel videos. I had Openshot before, and was plagued with issues. You do an outstanding job of explaining it in easy to understand terms. It can be overwhelming for a Noob, but I appreciate the way you present it. I subbed your channel so that I can refer back to these vids. Great job!
Much appreciated! Glad this was helpful
Very helpful. I’ve used key frames but felt I was sort of shooting in the dark. This clears it up very well. Thanks!!
It's funny how these guides pop up just when I need them.
I'm going to get into DR as well. It is a strong program. Thanks for the video. I appreciate tutorials very much.
It's a pro level editing software. Just make sure your system significantly exceeds the minimum system requirements (as with all editing software) or you'll have a bad experience.
@@Daniel_Batal I want to switch to a professional video editing software anyway because I'm doing more with motion design in the near future. I am convinced that it is worth it.
Great videos, I really dig how you're breaking it down. Thanks!
My pleasure
Oh how i wish you were teaching this when i started using DR 17! That's ok, I am still just doing the bare basics. But you make it so easy to understand! Thanks! I am ready to conquer DR!! With your tutorials, of course!!
You can do it!
