  • Followed this truck down cabbage hill , brakes got very hot on a couple wheels, which tells me this trucker has not been doing an adequate pre and post trip inspection. Most likely cause is some slack adjusters are not ratcheting up properly.

I myself, is glad that you made this vlog, it needs to be seen. I saw 1 the other day about the same hill, where the "professional" 6 month driver, had his cruise control on set to 45, jake brake on etc. What is not taken into account are the crazy 4 wheelers that get on that hill, 1 in each lane, not paying attention, but sight seeing. I have even seen them pull over, park in the opening to an escape ramp, thinking it was their own private viewing area.

Cabbage is hard to get wrong. I can come down cabbage fully loaded in 9th gear 55 mph and hardly touch the brake pedal. Jake's are more than enough to hold it back.

I agree.... I would say not using the jake , mis adjusted brakes and probably close to max gross

when your load is light you can handle cabbage's down grade, but if your heavy, its best to gear down to 25 or less with jakes, and don't rush it, with your hazard lights on, other wise you will be smoking your brakes trying to slow down. i didn't learn that lesson going into Vale, Co. ended up smoking, big time,. its a wonder they didn't catch on fire, i was one stupid, but lucky sob.

Dennis Mckown yep gotta choose a gear at the top and stay in that gear all the way down it's easier to work the Jake switch than to find and miss a gear mid way down. been down most of the big hills never smoked a brake in 27yrs.

There's some trucks that still don't have Jakes ... And if it's an inexperienced guy give him a break everybody's gotta learn somehow

Those drivers wouldn't smoke their breaks coming off Cabbage or any other hill, if they would actually pay attention to the signs that say a certain speed for loaded trucks. Take Woflcreek for example, max speed for 80k used to be posted 7mph.

Where do I start? Drivers going down grade too fast. Nothing new, mechanics love replacing all of the burnt-out brake shoes at $500 a pop.

I’m pretty sure you have a automatic truck just like the rest of them so you really don’t do any of the work coming off a hill.love people who talk trash about why n how you can smoke brakes and you just don’t get it etc when really your truck does it all for you as you hold your steering wheel

Why not get an automatic to make your life easier?

What is difference between auto and manual?! Downhill is downhill. You set your gear before descending hill.

I know the 1st time I went down cabbage I was scared shit less and by time I got to the bottom my brakes were smoking and when I saw the last curve I knocked it into Georgia overdrive and coasted about 3 miles toward the 1st exit

that is 'YOURS" doesn't mean that others have experienced the same. No matter how many different trucks "you" have driven, you are only 1 out of what 300,000 drivers? or more There are always companies that look for ways to cut costs. Bean counters that haven't even been in a truck, cutting costs on things they shouldn't cut costs on, but they do. People that run companies that have no clue, nor do they care, its all about the bottom line. If you have actually driven that many trucks, I would think that you have been around long enough to know about the cig industry, the drug companies, heck our own government! That have known & deliberately had products/done things to kill people, figured out what the lawsuits would cost them & went ahead & did it anyway because its cost effective.

Interstate 84 outside Pendleton Oregon -- this area gets really interesting in the winter time with the icy road conditions and the fog rolls in.

Last thing you want to do with hot brakes is stop. Need to run them until they cool off. You stop and they start burning

I go down this hill every day with 105,500 I go 65 until the 50 mph curve which is at the westbound viewpoint. I slow to 50 here for about a mile around the next corner gradually coming up to speed. at the 219 mm
