First trip after getting my CDL and my trainer is asleep in the back as i hit Cabbage around 1am in the rain. Now i grew up in mountains of Idaho and Eastern Washington so i am not exactly a stranger to them. But a fully loaded trailer and first full shift by myself, i won't lie scared the hell out of me going down that. I was nervous to begin with when i realized i would be driving it, my grandfather already warned me about it as an old timer trucker in the Inland Pacific North West. I don't think i breathed the whole way down it. Lol.
I retired in 2016 after 42yrs on the road .. Know that hill very very well.. loved the casino at the bottom.. remember when they built the new truck stop there at the bottom.... All you pedal pumpers out there be safe and safe trucking ....
Putting in that work and letting her sing all the way down the hill!!!! Yes sir that the way it’s done!!! Keep rollin and we will see you on the next one 😎🤙🏽✌️
That jake made the craziest drumming sound (like a big timpani) on the video. A low pitched "WOOM WOOM WOOM". Very cool sounding with the louder popping of jake.
A beautiful day for a beautiful ride. Thanks for taking us along. When I scratch together enough doll hairs that's the veiw I'll be looking at, in the meantime I got company truck that pays me pretty well ('13 volvo isx 425 deleted). Not my choice but it runs pretty well, i can't complain
Love your choice of mountain to video "CABBAGE". First time I rolled off her it was daylight 6" snow & ice underneath. 1997 wasn't too scary until last big long curve. Beginner drivers were all making a lot of mistakes. I was pulling Dry Van full of Styrofoam cups...Sh t is right...slid right! slid to the left! asked for help on CB. Ole timer calmly says ride down the center. That's what I did! Old timer, I've survived many big ass mountains. Never let my guard down.
My first trip down that thing was back in 70's.Cab over Kenworth,no Jake's,290 with a 10 speed. If you didn't do it right you dam sure knew it real quick.wasn't as wide then, you had little room to screw around on.Nice job bro.Love those Jake's.Be cool.
From John McPhee's great piece "A Fleet of One": We were crossing the Blue Mountains - on I-84, the Oregon Trail. He said "Before you know it, we'll be sitting on top of Cabbage. Then we're going to fall down." He had mentioned Cabbage Hill when we were still in the Great Divide Basin. He mentioned it again in Pocatello. After crossing into Oregon and drawing closer, he brought it up twice an hour. "It's the terrific hill we fall down before we come to Pendleton. Pretty treacherous. Switchbacks. Speed restricted by weight. You'll see guys all the time with smoke flying out the brakes or even a flameout at the bottom."
Awesome video 👍👍👍👍, brings back a lot of memories for me. I’ve gone up and down that hill many times in semi’s pulling 53”s and doubles🤪🤪🤪🥃🥃🥃👍. Every time I got down to the bottom on that long straight stretch I always gave a couple of long blasts on the air horn’s in celebration that I made it in one piece. A story one time in that day like you had in your video I’ve heard old timers tell about driving trucks downhill that the brakes with oil on them would heat up to the point of blue smoke coming out and they would ride out to the bottom no problem. Well one time as I was approaching the downhill a old Kenworth log truck painted rattle can yellow pulled out from a side road loaded with logs and I said to myself I hope he’s going east , NOPE west bound behind me. So as I was going down hill I did double duty keeping an eye straight ahead and the other on that old Kenworth hauling logs. It wasn’t long before blue smoke was pouring out of his brakes, it looked like the hole truck was on fire and he was right behind me. But I knew what was happening and he made it all the way to the bottom no problem, but what a show👍👍👍🥃🥃👍😎😎
I did my 34-hour restart there walked across the street to dairy Queen and only the drive through is open . Driver's lounge was open so I was able to watch TV be careful out keep up the good work 👍 keep the shiney 🇺🇲side up 🚛
I have never got to drive a truck over Cabbage when it was sunny out. Always hauled over it in the winter time and would sneak around the barricades or take tollgate over. Now that one is sketchy as hell in a snow storm
This is Awesome I have been making videos like this for my girls for years. I never post anything though not to sure how lol. Lookin real good Drivah 👍 missing the road since all this Covid bs and the wife has health issues to risky to take the chance working now. Keep that Dirty side down 🔨👇👍👍
You ever wonder who hauls all those roads cones an they have alot of them ..like 20 bucks apiece I think sure are lots of cones ...like your vids sir ..Mathew from Colorado
Cabbage Hill is nothing else as compared to the 50s when it was back and forth back and forth back and forth down the hill. Very windy until they built the new road
Took that route twice. Once in a Penske moving truck going to Portland as a passenger. And once driving a Cascadia Automatic. Put that puppy in cruise control and let her ride no probs at all. I miss driving.
How heavy were you on the way down Dooner? Sound like you cut her loose on the last mile where it straighten out...just make sure you don't need to exit at the bottom
Every time we come down that hill, I think it must have been truly terrifying when it was the original Oregon Trail, and you were in a covered wagon pulled by horses or oxen.
1977 driving as a OO for CARRETTA trucking in a 76 pete cab over with a 350 cummins,NO jake! right where the second runoff shows at 5:30 i found i had hot brakes, wait there's already a truck in it with dust still in the air .the rest a OMG stinky ride many a driver has been thou, thanks for the memories of 3 million miles
One time years back heading west out of Denver. I was carrying a train engine and came out of the tunnel too fast. I had my ten year old son with me. I could not slow down. We made it down the hill safely and I learned a lot from that experience. It was scary as hell!
I'm not a trucker yet, But, I would like to know what gears you are in when descending those hills and are you able to downshift while going down a steep grade?
Can't give you an answer. Everything must be considered when going up or down. What kind of transmission? How much do you weigh? Where's most of your weight? How long are you? etc etc etc Gotta know your truck and your load. It's always gonna be different.
Hello my friend, How are you, I hope you are fine, my friend, I am trying to find a job as a truck driver in the United States, can you help me, or point me to the companies that employ non-American truck drivers?? Thank you.. for the knowledge I live outside America,,, I hope you can help me with this

😂😂😂
How long is it
My first time down was after I was solo, first week. Came down in winter and 10 foot visibility in fog.
Love when ppl who don’t know anything about diesel mechanics try to say a Jake is bad for an engine..🤣 love these vids
Lmaoo whattttttttt???? Who would spew such nonsense
Even if it were bad for the engine, smoking your brakes on one of the 5 deadliest passes in the country is even worse for your life.
Been there, done that. My favorite thing about truckin was the awesome scenery America has.
I retired in 2016 after 42yrs on the road .. Know that hill very very well.. loved the casino at the bottom.. remember when they built the new truck stop there at the bottom.... All you pedal pumpers out there be safe and safe trucking ....
Thats how its done. Professional driver right here. Let her sing all the way down to the bottom
Professional driver right there. Excellent job 👍
Putting in that work and letting her sing all the way down the hill!!!! Yes sir that the way it’s done!!! Keep rollin and we will see you on the next one 😎🤙🏽✌️
I remember my first time down that hill, it was foggy and about 3 in the morning 😳
Always like going around that last left hand curve. Beautiful sight looking west.
That is what straight pipes and a good mechanic who knows how to do an overhead on a CAT sounds like.
Ah yes. Nothing better than the sound of 8 minutes of Jake brakes. Music to my ears. 🥰
Fantastic scenery! The not so green part of Oregon and them Jake’s in overtime again... Cool! 👊🏻😁
That is one of the best parts about trucking...long downhill grades with the engine brake burbling that one note song.
All u got to do is get the right gear an set the Jake!! Love it
NO NO NO it's not a jake break it's ENGINE RETARD or sumthin....lol...that's truck driving 101....just joking
"never heard such a long jake. It had a good workout. Haha. Great video.
Thanks Dooner for the few minutes of ear to ear grins , take care out there.😁
That jake made the craziest drumming sound (like a big timpani) on the video. A low pitched "WOOM WOOM WOOM". Very cool sounding with the louder popping of jake.

Welcome to Oregon, enjoy the smoke. I have had my starfish buggered on that hill before.
Thanks for the ride Dooner! 👍
Made that look so easy, a pro behind the wheel. Hey Dooner I have to say your channel has me saying WTF Chuck now and I like it....

I did my 34-hour restart there walked across the street to dairy Queen and only the drive through is open . Driver's lounge was open so I was able to watch TV be careful out keep up the good work 👍 keep the shiney 🇺🇲side up 🚛
Good stuff Dooner, be safe bro.
Beautiful sounding jake brake
Great Jake brake workout. That was a massive hill
Love these vids dooner!
That jake sounds sooo good. I love it.
I have never got to drive a truck over Cabbage when it was sunny out. Always hauled over it in the winter time and would sneak around the barricades or take tollgate over. Now that one is sketchy as hell in a snow storm
i went there in mid 80's with volvo white long hood 425 cat 18 speed straight pipes 8 inch loved it
My favorite hill. I'll be through there tomorrow
On it every week, Bubbayyyy!!!
Wow that brings back memories...
Love it bro. to bad Oregon is on fire.. the viewers would enjoy that. not your fault
This is Awesome I have been making videos like this for my girls for years. I never post anything though not to sure how lol. Lookin real good Drivah 👍 missing the road since all this Covid bs and the wife has health issues to risky to take the chance working now. Keep that Dirty side down 🔨👇👍👍
When I was Truckin, it was called Cabbage Patch
my god your jake brake is a musical symphony
Looks like that might be fun in winter.
Wish we had long, wide open roads like that in NZ, we have a lot of short, tight, twisty climbs and descents.
It's a blast let me tell ya especially running with doubles
Yeah when it's open.
You ever wonder who hauls all those roads cones an they have alot of them ..like 20 bucks apiece I think sure are lots of cones ...like your vids sir ..Mathew from Colorado
Think I might’ve been sportin’ some wood there for a minute.
Haa haa..
Boyoingg
Music to my ears
I think every time I've been down that hill I smelled someones brakes.
nice ride, be safe out there.
I was a bit spooked by that 'Last Warning' sign first time around...I ain't gonna lie. lol...
We got it easy now. Imagine rolling big hills in the days without Jacobs brakes and power steering with no steer axle brakes to boot!
Oh hell naw..no brakes on the front axle..no jakes...arm strong steering
Top 5 best motor brakes on You Tube, this is one!
What are the others?
Cabbage Hill is nothing else as compared to the 50s when it was back and forth back and forth back and forth down the hill. Very windy until they built the new road
Awesome videos bro!
Very cool brother
Back in the 70's I made that trip several times without the jakes, just takes a little longer.
dooner you rock...
Took that route twice. Once in a Penske moving truck going to Portland as a passenger. And once driving a Cascadia Automatic. Put that puppy in cruise control and let her ride no probs at all. I miss driving.
I just started truck driving and just experience my first mountain God my ass deflated but I made it lmaoo
That's some Awesome Ass View's!!!
some people put on natures sounds in the back ground....I put on your driving vids and listen to the jake brake rattle the windows....hahahahah
How heavy were you on the way down Dooner?
Sound like you cut her loose on the last mile where it straighten out...just make sure you don't need to exit at the bottom
That chromed out swan looks perfect on that long hood
Do this hill 8 times a week. It's a stinker in the winter.
Every time we come down that hill, I think it must have been truly terrifying when it was the original Oregon Trail, and you were in a covered wagon pulled by horses or oxen.
I bet so too!
1977 driving as a OO for CARRETTA trucking in a 76 pete cab over with a 350 cummins,NO jake! right where the second runoff shows at 5:30 i found i had hot brakes, wait there's already a truck in it with dust still in the air .the rest a OMG stinky ride many a driver has been thou,
thanks for the memories of 3 million miles
You running 8" straights? Sounds awesome, keep the shiny side up
Oh and does the name "Cabbage Hill" come from the sound of the truck while descending? 😂😶
Done that hill the same way for 20 years from 1977 to 1997, the more weight you had on the more common sense had to be applied
Have you ever had to use or have been close to using one of those runaway ramps?
One time years back heading west out of Denver. I was carrying a train engine and came out of the tunnel too fast. I had my ten year old son with me. I could not slow down.
We made it down the hill safely and I learned a lot from that experience.
It was scary as hell!
Great video. What engine is under the hood?
Nice.....
Imagine being that blue pickup truck at the end speeding up to not let you by then realizing you’re getting by then hitting his brakes🤮
White knuckle driving in winter
What is the down grade on this hill?
Sing me the song of my people
I'm not a trucker yet, But, I would like to know what gears you are in when descending those hills and are you able to downshift while going down a steep grade?
Can't give you an answer.
Everything must be considered when going up or down.
What kind of transmission?
How much do you weigh?
Where's most of your weight?
How long are you?
etc etc etc
Gotta know your truck and your load.
It's always gonna be different.
That thing got a Hemi in it?🙂🙃🙂
watching this video was a turn on for me
WHY DONT SOMEONE MAKE A VIDEO OF COMING DOWN LEWISTON HILL AND WHITEBIRD HILL OUTSIDE OF LEWISTON
ruclips.net/video/5Q05q9vj0mQ/видео.html

Hope u cat scaled it before you went over Pendleton. 👊
SuperNice⚠️👍
She'll be coming down the montian when she comes !!!
Hello my friend, How are you, I hope you are fine, my friend, I am trying to find a job as a truck driver in the United States, can you help me, or point me to the companies that employ non-American truck drivers?? Thank you.. for the knowledge I live outside America,,, I hope you can help me with this
that sound will soon be gone, next 10 years
Let them bark!!!!!
One thing I can't stand is when your coming down the hill at a decent speed then there's someone slow and you have to speed up to pass them
