THE SIDE OF HEAVY HAULAGE | YOU MAY NOT KNOW ABOUT

  • Sometimes when we think of heavy/abnormal haulage we think about delivering the big loads, Escorts and flashing lights. Quite often the big loads need moving around the site where they are built but it's a part of the job that nobody sees.

I think most people do not think about heavy trucks/lorries until they get stuck behind one on the motorway. The absolute best comment i ever heard from a trucker was on our local radio, one Christmas and when one woman said, "Theres far too many lorries on the roads at this time of year!" The reposte delivered almost immediately by trucker was, "If it wasn't for all THOSE LORRIES ON THE ROADS, your Christmas would not only not be delivered to your store so you have Christmas, but would spend its time languishing in a port somewhere, waiting for the 'Fairies', to do the next delivery run". Great to see things from the other point of view, thanks for shari g.

Hi from copenhagen denmark really enjoying seeing what goes on in the background of heavy haulage my great grandfather worked for wynnes of Cardiff in the 1920s and 30s with horses and then with traction engines my mum has told me many stories about her grandfather with the horses and traction engines struggling up out of Gloucester up crickly hill on the a 417 with loads of timber putting two or three traction engines together my mum still has some photos of him with his horses and traction engines and all his horse brasses ,he died just after i was born in 1963 i would of loved to have been able to talk to him about it keep safe, roy copenhagen denmark

I did heavy haul, and a lot of loads craned on and off of my truck.
It’s the best and worst job you can do.
Some places know what they are doing, some, not so much.
Had a Laborer’s card at one time, and that gave me a bit of pull on some job sites.
It gets really interesting when you know how to guide a crane operator, and the “regular” ground crew doesn’t.
Needless to say, some of those ground crews really appreciate that a guy that is driving a truck can also be trusted in a job site doing such dangerous work.
They remember you, and are always glad to see you!

When I used to drive artics, I used to carry reels of paper. Some small and some were massive. The worst ones being the 3500kg 2.85m wide ones that were stood like skittles down the trailer. When you had nine of them on your back, it wasn't fun when then road cambered badly around a roundabout or a bend.

Hi. Again. I would be careful of your comments about effort and no gain ! I understand what you are on about, but some company may take it the wrong way.
I suggested a camera on tail end of trailer for big loads but, thinking about it the load may well block out the camera view
The better place to fix a camera is the back of the cab , gutter mount or roof mount . This way the camera would always see the trailer turn , reverse, and walk sides.
Camera out of way of you working , only needs you to grab each evening
    Wish You Well
