Do you know any knowledge on the rate at which plants like moss balls can absorb ammonia? Definitely agree don't want too many plants on the surface re gas exhange. Plus it blocks out the light.
@@unusualaquariumecosystems5805 Moss balls grow very slowly, so in reality, they probably don't absorb a lot of ammonia. Fast growing plants tend to absorb a lot more ammonia.
Hi @GirlTalksFish I am planning to set up a community tank with 1 betta fish, 15 Neon tetras, 3 The Trumpet Snail and 5 bronze cory catfish. Do you think a 20-gallon tank would be large enough to keep them happy?
You're right about bettas interacting with the plants: I had one in a tank with a lot of crypts, and he was always swimming the leaves and stems, popping his head out to look at me as if to say "I am a great jungle explorer." :D
Very well said @Girl Talks Fish, As for any beginner out there some pro tips to counter algae in your aquarium is to plant as many live aquarium plants as you can in doing so the plants use up the nutrience that algae feed on this will help reduce it and Live plants really do help your water parameters a lot by keeping it more balanced plants also create beneficial oxygen for your fish, another important tip is proper lighting requirements 8 hours a day seems to be the sweet spot for aquarium low-medium light requirement for plants but also do your research ask around as well on the plants you want and it's light requirements but be careful not to leave light on for too long as it can create a lot of algae in a short time it's a fun hobby along with challenges it can bring.
The first time I watched your channel, I clicked away because I was ashamed. I didn’t have a heater, filter, and colored gravel. Now I’m excited to explore and have nutrient rich substrate (shoutout fluval), live plants that I haven’t killed, lights, and a happy tank. My fish, snail and shrimp have a good home and I can comfortably watch your videos without feeling guilt
Your channel has quickly become one of my favorites. You always have good information and are about creating great little homes for fish instead of just accumulating lots of pets. Keep up the great work! This is a great resource.
Thank you so much! Haha, I don't have time to collect more pets anyway. Whenever I have to put up my temporary quarantine tank, I'm always like, "Ugh, can't wait till I can tear this thing down." 😂
You explain in detail by dividing plants into two namely sinking plants and floating plants. Hearing your explanations is very pleasant and this is very good especially for betta lovers. What you make is Paradise for betta fish. Thank you 😺👌
i just put my first betta fish in a 20 gallon tank with almost all of the plants you recommended and he absolutely LOVES the frogbits!!! he has been exploring in his little “jungle” all around 💕💕💕
You might want to look into getting a few other fish for your 20gal. Bettas can become stressed in a big tank like this one, plus it gives you the opportunity to explore new fish :)
Omg the part about pothos is awesome! Im planning out a 10 gal aquarium and have a nice pothos that i was able to separate a bit of to add to my tank!!
Thank you!!! I'm a complete beginner setting up a 15 gallon (betta small community tank) at the moment and I love live plants. This has been so helpful!
Thanks for this video :) My young betta Namiko always plays within the plants. He swims through the leaves, getting excited and goofy. He is such a little sweetheart 🥰 My other betta Indigo loves Amazon frogbit, especially the long roots for exploring. He always sticks himself between the leaves to sleep at night. Live plants are the best in any tank ❤

Finally got some frogbit for my fish today and he absolutely loves it!!! He keeps swimming through it and nipping at the leaves and roots and he won't go away from them. Can't wait to get a bigger tank with substrate so I can plant more things for him!
Hi from Australia; absolutely love your Chanel ; you have a way of explaining thing so they make sense ; I just set up my first tank 27 litres and followed your instructions for the sponge filter with the air stone. Keep up the great videos.😀
My betta loves the amazon frogbit and Anubias too! I ordered my first crypt and jungle Val from aquarium coop so I’m excited to see them grow out. I have an amazon sword that I got from petco that shedded most of its leaves except for two new leaves so it’s exciting to watch that one grow. Always had a black thumb but seem to be doing okay with aquarium plants!
I just subscribed to your channel. You are great at explaining the how and why things work. I am setting up my first ever aquarium with live plants. I only have a small amount of room to place an aquarium. I bought a 5 gallon tank. I am going to put a Betta in it. I do believe I have over planted it though. It looks very jungle like. I hope my fish friend will be okay when I get him. At this point, I am cycling the tank. Once the water parameters are correct, I will be adding my fish. I am extremely happy that you did the video about setting up a sponge filter. I had watched several videos from Aquarium CO-OP about filters and made the decision to add a sponge filter. Once I received the filter I realized , I didn't know how to set it up. Thanks to you, it's up and running! Thanks again.
Wow such awesome content, liked & subscribed! Just got a 10 gallon and will be my first fish tank ever, I want to start with plants then add the betta later. Live in a concrete jungle so dying to have some beautiful greenery
Hello! I have loved listening to you talk about tank plants! My betta has been in a relatively small tank and after seeing your underwater garden, I want to transport him into something so much more lush!!
I’m getting my first betta soon... hopefully. I do want to use live plants because of all of the benefits it brings, but I’m not sure if it’s the best idea to use live plants in my first fish tank ever, I’m worried I might struggle (I don’t have much experience when it comes to fish) Would you recommend using live plants? Or should I just stick with fake ones until I get the hang of things? Great video by the way!
Hi there ! If you worry about tackling both live plants and a fish, I would recommend lucky bamboo. They’re just the cute little bamboo shoots people often put on their desk at office jobs. You can totally submerge them and they do great, to the fish it’s like being in a life size bamboo jungle and the bamboo with help with the nitrate levels in the water (:
@@maryeurich3190 I keep lucky bamboo in a couple of my tanks, but I bought taller stalks, so they stick out the top, through one of the holes for filters, wires, etc.
Great video. I use anubias broadleaf in my betta tanks. I also put some of the pothos in the tanks. My fish use the pothos leaves as hammocks, all I can see at night is the tips of their tails hanging off the edge of the leaves. The leaves do eventually start to rot, but it takes months, and then I just replace them with new leaves from the mother plant.
Excellent video; very informative. I just bought a betta and am keeping him in a Fluval Flex 15 (with 2 Endlers and a mystery snail). I noticed that he is often lying in the substrate under plants or sometimes in them. I was concerned about this until I saw your video. I guess bettas are lazy fish. I often see any of my community fish hanging around the bottom among plants, but I rarely see them on the substrate or lying in the fronds like the betta does.
Interesting! I also removed the moss balls and hornwort from my betta tanks because no betta I've had interacted/enjoyed either plant. I have a decent carpeting of littorella uniflora and my betta loves to lay on top or squeeze between plants. They root really well, so he hasn't lifted any and I can vacuum over them no problem. I had ONE plant, with five leaves and it looked completly different when I bought it. It died back, in fairness it was in sand, so when I moved it to Tropica soil, it took off and covered two of my tanks! Tropica soil is so light it's really easy for runner plants to propagate. It's actually a really nice replacement for the non-aquatic mondo grass I got duped into buying early on!
I found my betta really liked Water Wisteria, which grew really big so he had lots of branches and leaves to explore. What's the light coloured rock with holes that you have? It looks really cool, I'd like to try and find something like that around me when I can.
@@amandah2866 Sure thing! I bought mine from my local fish store, but here's where you can buy some smaller pieces (for a betta tank) online: www.aquariumcoop.com/products/dragon-stone-nano-pieces-in-bulk
@@GirlTalksFish Thank you for the link, but with exchange rates as they are and astronomical shipping prices I can't afford to order from the US...if they even ship to Australia.
How long should I cycle a new planted tank before adding my betta and tankmates? I'm 15 and I want to start a planted betta tank. But all the research I've done and videos I've watched have said to cycle the tank for a couple months before adding the fish. I plan to cylce the tank for at least a week to get the Nitrate and PH levels safe. But should I wait longer? I also want to put in a couple snails to help with algae growth. And I was thinking about a small 6-7 school of Ember tetras. I could really use some advice, tips, or just info. Thank you!
I always use to burry my lily pad bulbs in the soil and never realised why they were dying but since this video you taught me so much info about plants! And by the way what substrate are you using at 3:15 ?
buying plants locally makes it easier for plants to thrive as the water from your tap is closer to the water of your neighbors tap (in theory) i love ebay esp if u sort it by distance.
Are the glue and the plant fertilizer safe for the betta fish? I'm new to aquascape here.. :) Thanks a lot for your tips, anyway. Very detailed and easy to understand. Wishing Soundwave a good health and happy life always :)
I know this was an old question, but in case anyone else is wondering, the gel formula of superglue, Gorilla Glue, etc is safe and easy to use. Here's a good forum discussion about it. www.plantedtank.net/threads/super-glue.1095761/
Hi I’m planning on having a 15 gal but divided since my friends make beta fishes are in 3 gallon tanks and they want to gift me their betas and I wanna learn how to make a beautiful oasis for these little guys
I have a hornwort, it was the only thing I could afford so I brought it, and the employee at the shop said it’s nice and soft for fish. It grows seriously fast and the seeds have spikes, not very sharp to my betta fish but he knows to avoid it, I do add other stuff for him to play with so yea
The hillstream loach in your tank are so cute, I also keep em but you need a different tank for them because they do live on rocks and stones at the bottom with a higher flow so the water gets more oxygen in order to create a perfect environment for the beautiful fish. I hope I could help you.
Do you need a special grow light for these plants or is ambient light from a window across the room? We do have a led light, bur irs just a regular light, not a grow light
I actually just purchased the plant I think it's a stem plant but it's has large leaves that are kind of one side is green and the bottom is like a reddish purplish. I just planted them into the gravel because they don't have a rhizome and they don't actually have Roots so I'm assuming it's a stem plant. I actually bought too many plans because I didn't realize how many came like in a little container when you buy them. pretty much added plants to everything I have because I really had no idea how many plants there were.
What are those adorable things darting around on the tank sides/heater? Also, my koi betta Swim Shady LOVES his plants/driftwood. He'll sleep on the driftwood, or there is a spot that a plant comes up and he'll lay on the leaf, while another plant's leaf is overhanging over him. His little plant bed and leaf blanket. So precious
Haha, love your betta's name! I think you're talking about my hillstream loaches, which I did a video on here: ruclips.net/video/M-pCQFR_MzI/видео.html
@@GirlTalksFish Thanks! :D He's pretty great lol. I love Soundwave, though ♡ And the loaches are freaking adorable. I'm used to other kinds, but now... I might have to break out my other tank again and get some lol. Thanks for linking video! In hospital right now so it's hard to use arm to search for things. Click is awesome. Keep up the great work!
Is there a plant that can withstand the tannins? I only have success with moss balls but like Amazon sword, Hornworth and Wisteria plants they melt then withered maybe because they can't deal with slightly acidic water.
I'm a new betta owner, and this channel taught me lots of things about keeping my Solomon (my betta) healthy. He is an HMPK. I still cant decide what plant to pu on his tank, because I don't want to put soil in it, and it's just a 6 liter tank. What can you suggest please?
Hi there, hope that you and Solomon are doing well. I would just like to encourage you to consider upgrading your tank. 6 litres is only about 1.5 gallons, and most fishkeeping channels, clubs, etc will encourage 5 US gallon minimum for a betta. Some will go as low as 3 gallons, but any lower than that ... well, it would be like expecting you to live in a bathroom, 24 hours a day. I'm not sure what you could keep in terms of plants - plants will need a certain amount of light, and I assume there may not be a light on that small a tank? I kind of hope not, because it would be quite glaring in such a small space, if there was.
Here's an attempt to summarize the video. I have a hard time understanding the plant names so if I got any of them wrong, please let me know. 1:18 Surface/floating Plants: Amazon frogbits, redroot floaters?, water spargins? 2:42 Plants with Lily Pads: banana plants? dwarf aquarium leaves? red tiger lotus 3:08 Plants with Wide Leaves: Anubias - no need for substrate - leave rhizome on top Apongetons (betta bulbs) Java ferns 5:28 Pillowy plants Cryptocorynes: Wintyne? Tropica? Bolbitis (African Water Fern) 6:32 Bonus plants Pothos (Devil's Ivy) 7:15 Plants to avoid Marimo Moss Balls - releases filaments that you need to keep removing Hornwort - sheds needles and leaves everywhere Amazon sword - they get pretty big so they are unfit for small aquariums
so so sad!! I got my betta fish Rin in Feburaray and he had a growth we dindt know about and he died this weekend!! Im going to revamp the tank entirely before getting a new fish so your videos are super helpful! Rin was very spoiled in a solo 14 gallon O_O

i loved this video! very helpful! but i have a 5 gallon tank and just now saw that amazon swords need room so is 5 gallons too small?
Do you need to put in liquid all in one fertilizer for plants that are in substrait. or what would you use?
Can I keep hydrophyla, cobamba, ambulia, rotala pink, rotala super red, jungle val and some, dwarf sagaterious be OK to keep for a betta fish tank?
Hi I’m planning on having a 15 gal but divided since my friends make beta fishes are in 3 gallon tanks and they want to gift me their betas and I wanna learn how to make a beautiful oasis for these little guys
Good luck with your work 🌹
i have a lily pod in my betta tank (5 gallon) and he loves it. there’s nest bubbles everywhere on the tank
Oh, I forgot to mention about how they build bubble nests around surface leaves! Thanks for reminding me. :)
Pothos?!! Who'd of thunk it 😆 Thanks so much!!
Can i ask something should i use corner filter for bacteria
I have a hornwort, it was the only thing I could afford so I brought it, and the employee at the shop said it’s nice and soft for fish. It grows seriously fast and the seeds have spikes, not very sharp to my betta fish but he knows to avoid it, I do add other stuff for him to play with so yea
The hillstream loach in your tank are so cute, I also keep em but you need a different tank for them because they do live on rocks and stones at the bottom with a higher flow so the water gets more oxygen in order to create a perfect environment for the beautiful fish. I hope I could help you.
this video is super informative 👍
Hi is it safe phothos in betta tank? Ive heard it dangerous, but i dont know how truth it is
Do you need a special grow light for these plants or is ambient light from a window across the room? We do have a led light, bur irs just a regular light, not a grow light
Thx for the video! Really helpful. It's also my birthday today..
Awww, happy birthday to you! 🥳
do not look at the subtitles... at 5:19 they read "Killer Friday march for increased pignose jongkok everything my heart
What type of fish was that on the beta fish that run thru on the pillow part plant
I love watching your videos!! For me they are so easy for me to understand!
Great video!
Thank you so much!
Omg, loved the first tank shown hilarious!
Thanks for the great video..!! Stay Safe
Great video, thanks for sharing, I have Anubias, amazon swords in my betta tanks and he love it
Ur betta looks exactly like mine! Same color & everything! His name is Midnight 😍
Great video, what substrate is that?
Is the aquarium grass okay for bettas???
What is the little stingray looking things in the beginning tank?
Hello. I just saw you also have otto cynclus with your betta. I also have some but they are always hiding. Can you tell me why this coud be?
This is helpful thank you. New subscriber!
Here's an attempt to summarize the video. I have a hard time understanding the plant names so if I got any of them wrong, please let me know.
1:18 Surface/floating Plants: Amazon frogbits, redroot floaters?, water spargins?
2:42 Plants with Lily Pads: banana plants? dwarf aquarium leaves? red tiger lotus
3:08 Plants with Wide Leaves:
Anubias - no need for substrate - leave rhizome on top
Apongetons (betta bulbs)
Java ferns
5:28 Pillowy plants
Cryptocorynes: Wintyne? Tropica?
Bolbitis (African Water Fern)
6:32 Bonus plants
Pothos (Devil's Ivy)
7:15 Plants to avoid
Marimo Moss Balls - releases filaments that you need to keep removing
Hornwort - sheds needles and leaves everywhere
Amazon sword - they get pretty big so they are unfit for small aquariums
so so sad!! I got my betta fish Rin in Feburaray and he had a growth we dindt know about and he died this weekend!! Im going to revamp the tank entirely before getting a new fish so your videos are super helpful! Rin was very spoiled in a solo 14 gallon O_O
