I have a beautiful betta named Ares I got about a month or two ago because I was feeling kinda down and thought my room could be livened up with some company. When I first saw him it was practically love at first sight, he was fully black but his body was covered in those scales you see on some snakes that reflect light and shift into different colors. My birthday is in a few months and I'm currently saving money so I can go on a big fish spending trip so I can really give my little aquatic friend a life of luxury. I'll give him a bigger tank, more plants, lots of shelters and other tank accessories for him to explore, and some shrimp (and possibly other fish) to keep him company when I'm not around. My family thinks it's silly but Ares really has cheered me up a lot and I can't wait to go above and beyond for him :]
Update: My birthday has passed a couple weeks ago or so and now I'm in the process of cycling my 5th tank and looking into filter media for my 6th... What started with a singular betta has now become a fish obsession. Whoops

thank you for this! I have a half grown female betta. She's a savage! (but i love her!). Currently she's in a heavily planted 29 gallon tank with a couple furcata rainbows and two schwartzi cory catfish. There are also over 100 cherry shrimp in the tank who have their young under a huge mass of moss which is growing in the tank. She likes to stalk the shrimp. I know, some people may think this is cruel, but the shrimp really keep her occupied. She's too small to eat the adults but i see her going into and out of the moss hunting. I've decided she may have eaten a few. Maybe she will keep the shrimp population at bay? She also spends a lot of time exploring all the areas within the plants and recognizes me as her food source. She seems very happy. I just love her, and since she's such a savage, I named her "Savage". All the best your way~

@@davidhoover4063 Hello! I'm sorry to hear about Ruffles! I bet you'll miss Ruffles.
My little savage lived to be just one year old. She started hiding behind the filter. I figured she simply found a new place to rest, but I was wrong. Even though she acted as if she were ok, she passed a couple days later. I sure do miss her antics. I've since gotten two young honey gourami. They are living peacefully together. Because the tank is a 29, I got 10 chili rasbora, 4 CPD and a few more cory catfish too. Now I have a nice nano community.

Sounds like the perfect tank. I wanted that but I have a 20 gallon tall planted tank and it's not ideal at all.(all in one) My betta is always around top of tank. He sometimes goes lower but hardly at all. I tried stacking rocks which helped but they are still not really tall enough for him I think to feel comfortable, even though I have a heap of val and other plants. I've had the tank over a year now and I'm a bit of a loss. The water quality is good and ph I try to keep around 7. The filter is not too strong and i throttled it a bit as well. I think the taller tank has something to do with it. It's an older model, aquaone AR510.

I've had bettas for several yrs so I learned a lot.they love the log and rock to hide under. Also almond Indian leaf. Also I use 5 or 10 gal tank with filter. Also put plant in front of water flow so it's not too strong.
Yes feed blood worms and brine shrimp that's frozen as my fish have less health issues with those foods.

Great and informative video - thank you! Also, I like to stimulate my Betta with a long handled iced tea spoon. This is somewhat like a mirror, yes... but I can interact with the Betta directly as he follows the spoon around the tank! I start from a distance of about one foot to catch his curious eye. As soon as he sees the shiny surface, he zeros in on it and will immediately start to follow. I will wiggle the spoon to mimic the movements of the fish and bring it up to the glass. After a moment or two, he will just sit and stare at himself peacefully. Then occasionally will dance around the spoon and flare his gills and fins and then settle in again to stare. He seems to find this type of entertainment amusing and does not act in an aggressive way at all. Try it for something different. My Betta’s name is ROCKY !

My 10 gallon betta tank has these small like white organisms in it. I'm not sure what they are but my betta absolutely loves stalking and eating them. I also intentionally put filter media in there that I knew had detritus worms in it. They periodically blow out of the filter and he absolutely loves to go after those. It gives him something to chase, plus I'm sure they're good for his diet. They truly do love a planted tank. He loves to weave in and out of all the plants and under the mopani wood. I didn't really intend to get a fish but when I saw this sad looking plakat galaxy koi at Petco I had to bring him home. When I put him in that tank he immediately started zooming all over going in and out of the plants. Seeing how active he is and how much he actually swims back and forth all day long it makes me so sad for all the ones that are taken home and put in little bitty containers.

I may add a couple other posts as I'm watching and don't want to forget anything. 1. i purchased a "silk" plant from Amazon it was very hard and also had harder plastic parts, make sure there isn't any metal in the plants. I did purchase an actual silk plant at an Aquarium shop that was much softer. 2. That floating /sinking log. I was going to purchase that exact one but after reading some of the reviews decided against it. people complained about a chemical smell that wouldn't go away after cleaning and soaking it also the paint or whatever is on the log was chipping/flaking off.

I’ve got a betta fish named Alfred, we first got him in Oct 2022. his body was white/silver with red “rosetail” fins, his body now has a little pinkish color to it since we fed him pellets and brine shrimp, which enhances colors. For a while, i was teaching him how to dance by moving my hands side to side and he would move from left to right. (the brine shrimp was a reward for doing it.) pretty soon i noticed he wasn’t dancing and i found out my mom was giving him the shrimp as just a part of his daily meal and not when he danced 😭😭 He now actually jumps for his food, which he started doing all on his own. Alfred is super friendly and he’ll usually stay at the front of his tank if he notices people are near by. he’s currently in a 2.5 gallon and he’s got little friends in his tank. those friends being a little skeleton and stegosaurus, first time he ever saw the skeleton, he started showing off by flaring his beard. he’s also got a little mexican doll named Mochacha we put outside his tank and he loves to hang around her when nobody else is around, he even sleeps next to her even tho he’s got a tunnel.

Not sure how you could ever properly do that. Goldfish are cold water fish, bettas are tropical. Goldfish also create a massive amount of ammonia compared to bettas. There’s plenty of other fish that would be better off. Either your goldfish or your betta are not comfortable. Also I personally would not do frogs as they could nip your betta.

Kitchen was under construction and had to get the tank moved. Couldn't clean it because of the dust, so i moved her into a temporary hospital tank as she was showing signs of dropsy. Main tank was left abandoned and dirty because the dust will get it dirty again and my beta looks depressed and looked pale. A long time later, probably a little more than a month later, i finally put the betta back to its 10 gallon tank and they look much more happier. And my eyes might be playing games with me, but i think the color os coming back to them after one hour in the tank.

I'm thinking of getting a betta fish. 10 gallons, natural plant setup that is able to pretty much maintain itself without too much from me, a few types of community fish that won't bother each other, including couple fish that'll naturally help keep things clean alongside the plants, and heating and cooling devices with a thermometer to help regulate the temp up or down as needed.
I work as a truck driver and I will be busy a lot. I'm about to start work with a new company that'll get me home pretty much everyday with only occasionally being out overnight once in a while.
Unfortunately, this company does not allow pets in their trucks so dog or cat probably won't be the best idea. Who's going to feed them if I don't make it home at a reasonable time? I don't want to have to rely on my neighbor to partially take care of my own pet. I could use an automatic feeder but most of those only do dry kibble. And if I get another dog or cat, I want to put them on a more natural diet this time. A raw diet.
There are automatic feeders that do wet food but those use ice packs instead of electric refrigeration and ice packs can only last so long before its recommended to change them which I might not always be around in time for when working a lot.
So I figured, if I want something relatively low cost to care for, doesn’t require much attention or to be taken out, that can miss an occasional meal without it being an issue, why not some fish. As long as they are well fed they can miss a day or two of eating if I'm very busy working, right?
Just a heads up, my work schedule won't always be consistent, so the fishes feeding time won't always be consistent or same time either. It'll probably be fairly sporadic.
The initial setup might cost a bit, but after that the cost shouldn't be that bad. And I won't need to run my house ac all the time to keep them cool enough at home like I would with a dog or cat.
What does everyone think? Good idea, or no?
