You’ll sometimes hear enthusiasts describe their car as a “driver’s car,” and it’s tempting to think that’s just an excuse for not having enough power. But what they mean is that the car lets you experience driving. A driver’s car doesn’t isolate you from the road, it amplifies your connection to it. It makes driving engaging. Greatness doesn’t happen by accident, and today we’re going to figure out how to engineer a car to give a great driving experience.

NA engine with 9500 rpms paired to a 6 speed manual with a short throw shifter makes for a very engaging experience. The best drivers car I had was a modified 13B rotary engined 76 mazda.
-It had what felt like a 50-50 weight distribution
-Its steering literaly talked, would detail everything of the road yet was easy during low speeds and would get serious in high speeds
-short shift that literally made you want to shift and shift
-It almost stopped on a dime, with Brembo ventilated discs and hi-po pads, without sidetracking
-I felt like I was driving a fully balanced car on all axis, with Koni shocks and shorter coils, like I was sitting in the middle and mastering an X-Wing
-the smoothness carbon apex sealed engine revving all the way to 10k rpm in like a second
-the noise of the exhaust brapping along, burning all the glass beads, having to change them in a few months
-the flame swhoosing out in the back, especially while idling in traffic, rocking the car side to side,
-the induction noise starting from a removed front round headlight and the whine of the belts while the turbo was winding
-and the sleeper look in repaint metallic blue, widened original rechorome wheels, white wall rubber, with lots of chrome like brand new
My first and last love, drivers car. I miss you babe. * -sigh- *

Been driving an E30 for the past 8 years almost, bought it as my first car. It's an old 1985 318i, with an M10 inside.
I have tried many, many many newer cars, but none have the same raw feeling, no power steering, no electric windows, no nothing. It's just raw direct contact, hit a pebble, you feel it on the steering, hit a bump, there goes your butt. Turn too much too fast? There goes your tail sweeping over. Floor it after a green light? Here are your tires screeching off while it builds up speed.
I havent found a car so "fun" as this one to justify the switch to something newer, or even faster. I like in a somewhat small city, I don't need to go 120mph at any moment, and the fun I have while waiting for a green light while reving it up and launching it is more than enough.

You can find a driver's car at the cheaper end of the market. Mostly because these new things that separate the driver from the road are expensive, much more in older cars.
Jump in an old hot hatch like a Suzuki Swift or VW Golf. No power steering. The throttle cable connects your foot directly to the engine. Manual transmission. Super lightweight.
I personally have a Suzuki Ignis Sport. The last model before they introduced stability control, hydraulic clutch or fly by wire. Fairly cheap when new. Super raw response in engine and chassis. Recaro seats. The solid rear axle hides nothing from the road beneath. 83kW ain't heaps, but it does what you tell it.

My MR2 Spyder electro-hydraulic power steering I really enjoy. It's hydraulic but the pressure is made using an electric fluid pump as opposed to a direct pulley pump. These systems were so useful they were and are the first thing pulled from the cars at wrecking yards as drift and race car builders desired them. My understanding is other manufacturers are now using electrically pumped hydraulic assisted power steering on other production vehicles.

The was the seat held me inside of it was so tight that i could feel the whole car. Until that point i've never experienced anything like it. It felt when the car lost and gained grip, it felt when the body was bending in curves, it felt everything. That's the most control i had in a car and the safest i've ever felt driving. Biggest regret is not getting the tune sooner. Literally every performance upgrade can be enhanced with the tune. Intercooler, intake, exhaust, doesn't matter, you'll add at least another 10% improvement on top of your upgrade. But you guys probably already know that.
Only other regret I can think of is not cleaning off the dead lovebugs sooner. It ate away at the paint on my front bumper and now I'm probably going to have to get it repainted.

I had a 2003 Acura RSX Type S with a 6 speed manual transmission. This car was a blast to drive as it was very quick and nimble. It inspired confidence and made me feel like I was a better driver than maybe I really was. It wasn't great on the highway. It maxed out at 120 mph and the amount of road noise was excessive, but zipping around in an urban setting was unforgettable. More fun to drive than an E30 BMW and a hell of a lot less expensive.
I currently have a 2012 E92 M3. This car is amazing, yet somehow I still think of the RSX as being more fun. I suppose the RSX's small and light body combined with a zippy 200hp 4 cylinder engine mated to a smooth as silk 6 speed manual gearbox made it a special car to drive. Although the E92 is over twice as powerful and a great handling car in it's own right, its weigh subtracts from those advantages. I suppose it comes down to what you are looking for. The BMW, in my opinion, is the very best all around balance of power, handling, comfort and performance; in other words, it is the best balance of everything one would want in a car.

If I had to pin down some direct mechanical features that help make a car a "driver's car" it would be: High revving naturally aspirated engine that builds power all the way to redline, manual, hydraulic steering, rear-wheel drive (with some front wheel and AWD exceptions), small sedan or roadster chassis, the interior is physical feedback oriented (essentially almost nothing operated through the infotainment, just buttons), enough horsepower to be fun, but not so much you can't hear the engine without seriously breaking the law (think max end of this being a Ferrari 360 Modena). Those are all the things I can think of at the moment, but if any of you want to add on, put some comments below.

I have driven many, many different cars. I spent some time thinking about why some were more fun or a "driver's car." And what I noticed is the ones that I typically like to drive the most are small, nimble cars, because driving "fast" is relative. Driving an AMG Merc 100 mph is nothing. But driving a small hatchback 100 mph is FUN. Some cars that I love are; GTI, 86, MX5, Focus/Fiesta ST. Not only are all of these super fun to drive, but they happen to be inexpensive too.

I'd disagree that it's a drivers car. Where are you really going to drive that? As a driver I'd rather drive a slow car fast than a fast car slow. Until you get to the track there is no where to experience the actual drive of a McLaren other than a seconds long burst of speed getting on to a highway. On public roads you'll never experience what makes that car great, to do that you need to go to the track.... and now you have a track car not a drivers car.

@@jellofuel Of course this is all just my opinion but yeah definitely not exclusive to the McLaren, pretty much any 180+ mph car in general. It all goes back to a philosophy of it's more fun to take a car to 90% of it's capabilities than to 20% even if that means the 2 cars are traveling at the same speed, the more power and speed the car is capable of the less likely you can drive it at 90% without exceeding the speed limits by license losing car impounding amounts.
