Are you making this simple white belt mistake?

  • In Jiu Jitsu, the path from White Belt to Blue Belt is treacherous. There's a huge skill and knowledge gap between BJJ day 1 and BJJ blue belt.
As I'm watching my beginners, this simple framing mistake is the number one reason I observe. If your opponent can distribute weight on you effectively, nothing you try is gonna work very well. Check this out and please let me know if it helps or if you have any questions.

One of the lessons I learned that really helped my game was the concept of being sticky in all directions except for the direction that you want them to go. This concept of framing fits perfectly with that idea.
Make it hard for them to go where they want to go. Frame, make it uncomfortable, and when they get frustrated and try to go the other direction, you let them go easily and you slide into your more dominant position. It’s amazing how quickly someone loses focus when they’re finally able to overcome that annoying frame you’ve posted. They feel that they’ve finally found that opening, so they put everything into it. All you have to do is let them overcommit and just slide around to their back, or go with their momentum to sweep them. It works like a charm.

@@brandonmcninja When I roll with my coach, developing my frame has been my top priority, as well as getting totally to my side when trying to shrimp out. He's working on his long overdue black belt, so he continues to have plenty to teach me about it. But I try to remember your phrase when I get in trouble: frames don't push. I'm getting better at using the natural stability of my long bones to keep partners at bay and it keeps me from needlessly gassing myself by pushing for no effect.

I've studied four different arts over the last 32 years (Sanchin-Ryu, Krav Maga, BJJ and Wing Chun) and they ALL have framing.

No need to call me sensei. Just call me Brandon. I appreciate you watching and I’m super glad it has helped you!

thank-you video is absolutely fantastic. It pains me to say that I had to give up practicing jiu-jitsu, despite my deep passion for the sport and proudly holding a purple belt. The reason behind my decision wasn't because I wanted to quit-it was because I finally mustered up the courage to share my truth and come out as gay after keeping it a secret for so many years. Living here in Greece, it turned out to be a less-than-wise move, as it caused my jiu-jitsu community to distance themselves from me. It's been tough, but I'm hopeful for better days ahead.

2:15 - I see a lot of high level competitors use their knee shield with their knee on the hip as you describe. Good video, thanks!

This is great stuff. I don't have my blue belt because I made the rookie mistake of letting them give me a purple one, but I'm showing this to my white belt GF. Paul Schreiner loves to say that you're fighting with your skeleton. Also 45 degree angles are strongest.
