So much wisdom at 6:54 about gi and nogi. “How about just do what’s fun? You tryna be the world champ? No? Then it’s pick up basketball. Enjoy yourself.” Exactly! We’re horse playing in pajamas and swimwear. It’s not that serious. :)
I wish I could help everyone understand this mindset, instead of the constant stress and high (often unrealistic) expectations so many of us tend to create for ourselves.
Just got here from Chewy's video. You are a true teacher and coach. When you master the way, you see it in everything. Your comparisons of martial arts to music ring true, to me, being into both. Looking forward to more of your content.
Brandon, you’re the first person I’ve ever heard talk about being pulled more to the “art” than the “martial”. I can relate to that 100%! But until you described it, I had never thought about it that way. Thanks!
It's important to keep the martial alive, though! as artists it can be easy to get lost in the art sometimes. don't let yourself lose hold of the warrior.
It is so funny i have been watching Chewys videos since before discovering your channel and now I'm seeing your videos together 😂. great stuff love hearing you guys talk about the gentle art
@@brandonmcninja Ring card boy? Brandon I'm at work, man! You cant be making laugh like this right now. First time at his channel and he is getting me fired...
I practice karate and what you said at the end is so true to that as well. There are teachers that generate "clones" of themselfs and i also dislike the approach. They can still get good results but for me it´s better to let people develop their own style. "Add what´s essentially your own" as Bruce Lee said
I like Gi and NoGi but always found training in the Gi best. Everything Chewy said about Gi rolling at the beginning and using top pressure with grips is spot on. Although I may not be gripping fabric I naturally am placing my hand position in the right spot to apply as much pressure as possible in NoGi. I'm speculating but training in Gi i think has made me a much stronger passer, because of the inside grip fighting . I've never been a heavy lapel player so transition to No Gi has always been easy I felt my game is old school anyways.
Wow thank you for breaking this down. I'm a white belt in gi. Everything you have said I'm going through. Anxiety and all. Now I'm on the spot due to my Coach to do no gi. Lol. Like whaaaaat ? I didn't say that out loud. But on the inside yuuup. I guess this will help me in gi as well/ help me in jiu-jitsu.
i like both gi and no-gi........i think of them like pizza and burger. if i had pizza 3 month´s straight then i urge burger´s and then i do burgers for a while and then i want pizza again............i guess variation is key to keep both interesting and not take on a belief system where one is better than the other.......peace guys good to see two of my favorit bjj guys hang out......... I'm surprised you didn't open with Whitney Houston's "I will always love you". Then again, I think the Dolly Parton version is more your speed. Either way, we feel the plutonic love between two men, that practice strangling each other.
I like both, but being a big judo lover I do prefer the Gi. If the Gi wasn’t applicable, the military combative systems would train neked. So I always hate hearing that statement, and glad you both are saying to train both. I will train no Gi style techniques and transition back and forth while training. My judo sensei asks us to try not to use grips as much when performing throws and look for more body connection to create the fulcrum or kazushi.
Training Gi and no Gi is nicer. You can test yourself in both scenarios and learn about your strengths and weaknesses on both sides and strive to evolve everywhere. I also believe the the Gi creates more friction and more grips therefore You have to learn how to escape extremely controlled scenarios just like no Gi teaches how to attack with slightly less control.
I keep hearing the difference between gi and nogi is all about the farmers. Is it about the farmers? Could you maybe make a really short 3s clip to answer if it is in fact about the farmers?
@@expektre0072 then I would say split your time between the 2. Don’t get caught too much in the gi/no gi debate. Just do the one that makes you wanna train a lot. If you were specifically trying to do MMA or competition Jiu Jitsu, I’d have a different answer for you.
I have labral tears in my hip and I find my nogi game sucks as I have had to modify my game massively. I love nogi but my rubber guard days are over for now. Deep half is about all I have now.
That’s a good question. I have to be honest, lacing it that way has never produced good results for me. Most people feel the same way. That’s why you don’t see too many instructionals on it
@@brandonmcninja every instructional I've gotten my hands on shows the same way; I'm sure there's some reason, I just haven't found anyone that knows yet. Maybe it's merely because it all matriculated from Bravo?
@@brandonmcninja Can you explain that a little more? What makes it not effective? I'm not trying to be difficult, just want to understand the principles behind it.
so if no gi is for more offense and gi is more defense. would me wearing a gi versing a no gi condition me to be "unstoppable"? (kinda like rolling with the best people will improve you faster)
Yes. There are real things. 8 months out of the year in MN here, people wear jackets. Another thing I noticed is training gi 100% during class I became a guard guy. Well in open gym I noticed guys had an incredible hard time passing me cause they can't grab my pants when I do no gi
I think nogi is more fun. The learning curve is way less steep, and my athleticism, and 17 years of lifting weights actually count for something I think gi grips are cheating just like punching someone in the face would be cheating... If you're gonna negate my strength using gi grips, I should be able to punch you in the face... which is what I'd do if your hands are both busy grabbing my clothes instead of guarding your face
