he barely told anything new to frequenters of this channel, but damn the way he explained these things felt so intuitive. Jay would make a great teacher

Wouldn’t he? I absolutely love this channel, it’s so educational in a gentle way that isn’t abrasive, and no matter how many times they explain the same thing, they always make it interesting.

I finished my GG back in '83 and named my business Cabochon Gems and Designs way back then. I won some Cutting Edge awards at AGTA and judged the contest in the 90's so.....my advice is fewer stones of much better cut and proportion. Parcels usually have worse cuts and those stones don't sell. I regret parcels with one or two nice stones because I still have the crummy stones. Ask to high grade the parcel and see what the price is then. You will not recoup your money on masses of poor quality stones but fine stones hold their value.

I work with rare color iolite/indialite/cordieorite. Before I look to cut a parcel I'll find a matching suite of gems to cut and will sell the lesser quality individually and finish the best ones for a suite for necklaces and matching jewlery. Covid kicked my buisness in the pants pretty bad, finding new cutters and contacts isn't easy.

Jay described how I became addicted to gem stones pretty much. What are those two large Cabochons that are sort of cloudy white with colored inclusions? I have a couple of stones now that are close to that color and look like a similar stone.

Great content, I appreciate the non-hype approach this offers.
Can you discuss the topic of gems that were rare/valuable and are now priced lower? Such was when white zircons was used to substitute diamonds and it’s fall in preciousness when CZ was introduced to the jewelry industry.

They have a lot of variety on both websites JTV jewelrylove and Jedore, but I don't recommend buying from them if you live internationally. That is because they don't ship internationally, and the only way to buy what they sell if you don't live in the US. Is through the phone, but you will have to pay because of international phone call. But if you are quite desperate, I say go for it. I am quite disappointed that they don't say anything about it on either websites, but I hope they do something about it. :)

Is there an official name for stones with half polished face (like a cabochon), but with the bottom still rough (and not flat, unlike a cabochon)? I think it looks really good, but I don't think it's a thing because I don't seem to find them anywhere

So much good info here! I know from experience of this channel that Rebeccah is at least as much an expert as he is! Awesome that she was so gracious! He seems like a really cool dude and loves having his brain picked about niche things that are likely no longer readily available. If only all mineralogy instructors were as cool as him, we'd be swimming in geologists 😂
