Great independent horror film with a limited budget but everything and everyone was utilized in the best ways possible. Maika Monroe is the main character and her movies tend to be well done. She has a great sense of the roles that she takes on. I recommend The Guest, Hot Summer Nights, Honey, Villains and The Education of Frederick Fitzell/Flashback. Great reaction!!

I definitely agree. It's interesting to think about who is more wrong: Hugh doing what he did to Jay, or Paul seemingly passing on the demon to unsuspecting victims through the prostitutes? The natural assumption is the prostitutes will pass the demon on to their "Johns", who likely have wives given the average types who solicit prostitutes. Logically speaking, this increases Paul and Jay's longevity of survival. However, unsuspecting victims will fall prey much, much quicker due to their confusion and ignorance of what "It" is. Of course, it's left ambiguous whether or not Paul actually slept with the prostitutes, or if the person following Jay and Paul was actually the demon.

Best homage to old school John Carpenter horror films. My take along with the STD angle is equal to what they tell lifeguards, "be careful when saving someone because a drowning person will always try to pull you down with them".
This movie made me think of an episode of the 1974 TV show Kolchak: The NightStalker, called Horror in the Heights. Something was killing people in a neighborhood and it turned out to be a creature from Hindu mythology called a Rakshasa. It would assume the form of someone the victim trusted, then slowly walk toward them while making excuses for why they were there, and when it got close enough, it would grab and kill the person. I know it's not exactly the same, but that's what this film reminded me of.
My interpretation of the ending is that it was just a regular person walking in the background I think it only follows you when you're the active target but that final shot is to kinda simbolyze that they can never be sure. Don't know about you, but I would forever live looking over my shoulder. Just because you passed it, the terror isn't over. Paul actually played it nicely, he passed it on to a prostitute. Other than maybe a flight attendant or a commercial pilot, I think this is the best thing that you can do to ensure it will take the longest to come back to you, if it does. So because of that I think it was just a regular person there to plant that doubt on the viewer.
Yara reads a quote from The Idiot which helps explain the plot "And the most terrible agony may not be in the wound themselves but in knowing for certain that ... your soul will leave your body, and you will no longer be a person, and that this is certain. The worst thing is that it is certain." Thanks again for watching this. Glad I found you guys.!
Wasn't a fan first time I saw this movie, but i thought about the concept and watched it again and fell in love with it. This movie is a modern horror classic.
As an adult this is the only horror movie that really made me uneasy. I'm pretty desensitized to everything but It Follows stuck in my head for quite a while after I watched it. It's so well done. Especially with such a small budget compared to most movies.
Agreed. It's simple, but effective, a being like this after you would take one's paranoia to new heights. What rules does it abide by, besides constantly walking towards you, cannot die and being aware of when you're trying to trick it? How much money do you have, how many people can you sacrifice, how would you fare among crowds of people, what about maintaining a job? One would spend the rest of his/her days living in fear and worry.
They filmed this movie in my home city (Detroit). It's good to finally see movies/tv shows filmed in the beautiful areas and not the typical run-down areas. Great reaction as well :)
One of my favorite horror movies ever! Such a simple, yet effective concept. They executed it to perfection in my opinion. The music, the shots, the tone -- so good and so creepy!
It Follows is seriously underrated. In an era of same old horror films, It Follows really switched it up but done it so well. It's creepy, well acted, very well paced and the music is brilliant.
One thing that stuck with me in this movie that I'm not sure happened with anybody else was the awkward placement of the color red in certain parts: 1st was the girl with the red heels, 2nd was the lead girl's fingernail polish, and 3rd was the cloud of blood in the pool
I love that it’s not a ghost that can just pop in on you. One of the most terrifying scenes to me is where it tries to go in through the neighbors door first and then when it’s locked it climbs in through the window.
I loved the synthwave soundtrack and the unique tone but I really enjoyed the weird aspect of the vague time period. There are hints to it taking place in the 80's but also hints of technology that is stylishly advanced which is such a cool element.
The fear, discomfort and especially the impotence of salvation that this film transmits makes it one of the best horror films of recent times. In addition to this masterful direction that gives us the impression in the details and also in the distance shots that they are always being followed, or supposedly followed, or that anyone could be the devil. The cursed sex transmitting curse in perpetual contamination and still, it has one of the best movie intros with that long shot. Oh, and let me hope that, if the guy had sex for love (and what love, right? Giving his life), those lost souls would leave.
i love ambiguous endings, leaves for for imagination, interpretation, and debate. this is one of my favorite horror/thriller movies. the pacing is a little slow for some, and i thought the final act of the movie could have been a little better, but i love this movie. the atmosphere and score were homages to old school horror films, but the premise was fresh.Much better than big budget horror films.
I've only watched this once when it came out which is almost 10 years ago (nuts!). I remember very little but the moment of the big dude appearing behind the friend was so frightening to me then that I will always remember the way I felt and haven't felt like that from a movie since!
The film's concept derives from a recurring nightmare the director used to have, in which he would be stalked by a predator that continually walked slowly towards him. Jay is short for Jamie, a tribute to scream queen Jamie Lee Curtis. In the film, Jay has a sister named Kelly. Jamie Lee Curtis also has a sister named Kelly Curtis.
The setting of degraded Detroit as a backlot is genius for this film. The deep message is the inevitability of our eventual demise, the grains of sand slowly falling through the hourglass like the footsteps of death following our every move.
Don't know if anyone mentioned this yet, but the guy who played "the tall man" in that hallway scene was 7'7" tall. He was one of a set of twins who were the World's Tallest Twins, until his passing a few years back. So, yeah -- the Tall Man was a *very* tall man.
Disasterpiece, who made the score for this movie, is a freaking genius. He also made the soundtrack for one of my favourite video games, Hyper Light Drifter.
Really surprised to see you react to this film, but pleasantly so. I watched 'It Follows' when it first released on disc and remember enjoying it. A simple yet effective premise. Thanks you for these film reactions, I really enjoy them, great work both of you. =)
Love this movie so much! Was absolutely terrified watching it the first time. Also the musical number, by Disasterpiece, really set the tone for the entire movie. So eerie and makes you feel the intensity of each scene. Epic reaction!
It Follows is probably in my top 3 horror films of the 2010s, along with The Conjuring and Split. I really liked the anachronistic vibe of this film. It could have easily been made in the 70s or 80s. I think the opening scene is the only one we see a character with a cell phone.
After watching this movie I had a feeling of dread and nightmares for days. Such a good and effective movie! One of my fav horror movies. So glad you both watched it.
You can definitely see some traces of this in the recent movie Smile, aside from people seeing the entity in this vs only the affected person seeing the entity in Smile. Awesome movie and reaction either way!
a lot of people think this film is about stds, and while i respect their reading, i disagree completely. i think the film is about the fear of growing old(er) and the inevitability of death, that's what follows. it can take on many forms and you might be able to hold it off for a while, but it will eventually get you, and there's no way out. The most obvious hint are Yara's Dostoevsky quotes, which spell it out pretty plainly.
I'm sure someone else has said but the whole feel of the movie is intended to add confusion- what season are they in? Some days it's like summer but the next it's fall. What devices are they using as well as what's on TV? Things are modern or old, in subtle ways, to make you feel just a tiny bit confused or unsettled. Where are all the parents? They're there physically but not really there, for any kid, etc etc. Everything is intentional with this movie and yet nothing is thrown in your face, it's just an all round feeling of unease or unfamiliarity you just can't quite put your finger on.
I am not normally a fan of horror movies, but this movie was phenomenal. The music, the ambiguous timeframe that the movie takes place it (you never really know what decade it is, and that was done on purpose).
I love the ending, to be honest. The ending doesn't tell you whether or not they succeeded in their bizarre, ridiculous plan to defeat "it." So, the ending to me, shows they're just trying to exist with each other now, in hopes that they are now free, and it never tells you in the last shot if the person behind them is "it" or just a regular pedestrian. And I guess we're getting a sequel, so!
You said it Steve, this was a disturbing ass movie. Definitely original and unique, and weird to the core. It kinda blew me away when I first saw it, actually gave me the chills at times. I went and told everyone I knew about it afterwards, it might not be the most action packed or greatest movie ever, but it's for sure a 1 of a kind film, with it's own brand and style of horror. The look on the 2 of your faces said it all, great pick with this one here, not too many people have reacted to this or are even aware of the true terror and disturbance of this movie. It's genuinely creepy as hell, and the music and soundtrack was perfect for this film, it made you feel it even more, and made it even more sinister.
Great film. Along with obvious STD allegory, I view "It Follows" as a story about aging out of childhood and the inevitable loss of innocence that comes with it. Characters spend the whole movie remembering their childhoods and how simple and safe they felt, and now that they're moving into adulthood, there's no way to reclaim that safety. "It" is the slow (but unstoppable) march of time that no one can escape. First sexual experiences are pretty common for triggering these feelings so it was a smart way to frame the theme.
My favorite horror of all time. Nothing comes close, how well exectuted, how deep it is .. amazing start, the "exposition" scene is awesome (tarantino said so himself) .. Just the climax could have been better ..
YES!! I'm glad to see you two reacting to this movie! This one has become one of my favorite horror movies as of late...especially because of the retro 80's sounding music!
I think restricting information is part of the point. Lots of films restrict visual information through tight frames or shadows. This film gives you wide open frames to look around, but it doesn't give you narrative information. Knowing about the It that Follows would be a kind of a comfort. Instead, we learn almost everything up front, and so there's no clear course of action to stop it.
The writer/director stated the film was based on a recurring nightmare he had, so the film follows a kind of dream logic with a timelessness about the production design.
my favorite aspect of this film is it's an "invisible monster"/paranormal type film where the creature just does not give a fuck. it doesn't care if other people know it's there, it doesn't care if the person it's after is in public or private. it's not pulling that bullshit mind games where it makes the friends/etc of the victim think they are crazy. it doesn't care, and just wants to kill. also, it doesn't really teleport around as much. it has to actually break into a home. I do agree that i hate the ending. it's the typical, cliche indie horror type ending, but the rest of the film was solid.

*Probably the best horror movie I've ever seen. I still think about this movie at least once a month.*
The terrifying thing is that even if you pass it on you're still not safe. You have to just hope and pray that people keep passing it
My interpretation of the ending is that it was just a regular person walking in the background
I think it only follows you when you're the active target but that final shot is to kinda simbolyze that they can never be sure.
The worst thing is that it is certain."
Thanks again for watching this. Glad I found you guys.!
😂 not Nikki ending the movie 5 mins in.
"Red flags girl, run" If only she listened to you Nikki.
Wasn't a fan first time I saw this movie, but i thought about the concept and watched it again and fell in love with it. This movie is a modern horror classic.
I just realized how this is like The Ring - you have to pass it on to survive it yourself. But this is even scarier than The Ring in its randomness.
As an adult this is the only horror movie that really made me uneasy. I'm pretty desensitized to everything but It Follows stuck in my head for quite a while after I watched it. It's so well done. Especially with such a small budget compared to most movies.
Drag Me to Hell (2009) scared the shit out of me. Have you seen that one?
❤
The opening to this film was utter perfection!
What about the girl wearing high heels?
They filmed this movie in my home city (Detroit). It's good to finally see movies/tv shows filmed in the beautiful areas and not the typical run-down areas. Great reaction as well :)
One of my favorite horror movies ever! Such a simple, yet effective concept. They executed it to perfection in my opinion. The music, the shots, the tone -- so good and so creepy!
It Follows is seriously underrated. In an era of same old horror films, It Follows really switched it up but done it so well. It's creepy, well acted, very well paced and the music is brilliant.
Honestly, this movie is my favorite horror movie of the Last ten years.
This is such a modern horror classic, truly one to not miss.
Dude, Tall Guy in the hallway haunts me to this day 😂
what a surprise! absolutely love this movie. wish it got more attention. went into it knowing nothing about the story
You guys started a trend now hopefully others will follow and react to it
I hated this movie when it first came out but over the years I’ve grown to love it. Glad you guys had fun with this one. Love you guys 🥰😊
The look of this film is so gritty. I love it.
Why does the park scene look exactly like the park scene in Halloween Kills?! Also Nikki's reactions are the best 😂
Sequel ’They Follow’ was just announced in October!!!
I've been watching horror movies from 4 years old to 38 years old, and this has got to be one of the best Directed for this type of premise
If you haven't seen it already, react to "Pitch Black". Great little sci fi horror from Vin Diesels early career.
That series has been trending on Netflix lately since they added the 3rd I think at the beginning of March. Great movies!!
i love ambiguous endings, leaves for for imagination, interpretation, and debate. this is one of my favorite horror/thriller movies. the pacing is a little slow for some, and i thought the final act of the movie could have been a little better, but i love this movie. the atmosphere and score were homages to old school horror films, but the premise was fresh.Much better than big budget horror films.
Nikki: Nothing
Steven with every movie ever: "I really like the music so far"
Suspiria (1977) and Suspiria (2018) are both must sees. Please check those out.
One of the best horror movies in the past 15 years. It's incredible, very interesting concept.
Thanks for doing this movie, no one else has
You can definitely see some traces of this in the recent movie Smile, aside from people seeing the entity in this vs only the affected person seeing the entity in Smile. Awesome movie and reaction either way!
They should do a prequel how it all started the first person who have done this
The ending is that you never know. For the rest of your life, you're going to be afraid and you can never let your guard down
I can't believe that Steven's actual default laugh is legitimately maniacal sounding
Don't apologize for being yourself, girl! This is my favorite psychological thriller ever!
"Who would swim to a boat to just wanna do it"
How do you think the myths about sirens/Mermaids came from
Happened all the time to the greeks lol
Can't wait for the sequel. It Swallows.
Not many horror movies scare me anymore but this was scary as heck
Saw this movie in a completely empty theater. I looked behind me non stop.
a lot of people think this film is about stds, and while i respect their reading, i disagree completely. i think the film is about the fear of growing old(er) and the inevitability of death, that's what follows. it can take on many forms and you might be able to hold it off for a while, but it will eventually get you, and there's no way out.
The music is by DisasterPeace. He also made the music for Risk of Rain, Hyper Light Drifter, and other movies and games
I am not normally a fan of horror movies, but this movie was phenomenal. The music, the ambiguous timeframe that the movie takes place it (you never really know what decade it is, and that was done on purpose).
It's so much fun to watch scary movies with you both!🍿...and I think Nikki is getting better at not hitting Steven's arm 😂
I love the ending, to be honest.
The ending doesn't tell you whether or not they succeeded in their bizarre, ridiculous plan to defeat "it."
So, the ending to me, shows they're just trying to exist with each other now, in hopes that they are now free, and it never tells you in the last shot if the person behind them is "it" or just a regular pedestrian.
And I guess we're getting a sequel, so!
Yeah the ending was near perfect imo.
This movie scares the shit out of me. I think it is one of the better modern horror movies Ive seen
Holy CRAP! I didn't ever expect you guys to react to this! My favourite horror movie!
That movie at the beginning on the TV is "The Thing From Another Planet". Remade as "The Thing" in the 80s with Kurt Russell
The concept is so so simple and i think because of that, they had a lot they could do with the creature
I would instantly survive this movie for reasons I don't care to explain.
One of my favourite modern horror films. It’s oozing atmosphere and I love the 80s vibe. Great score too!
Steven’s face in the thumbnail lol. He’s like “what on earth..”
