"Death Would've Been Kinder": The Bosnian Genocide

  • On July 11th, 1995, Bosnian Serb forces led by General Ratko Mladic began the systematic killing of nearly 10,000 Bosnian Muslim (sometimes referred to as “Bosniaks”) men and boys in the area of Srebrenica, a small town located about halfway between the Bosnian capital of Sarajevo and the Serbian capital of Belgrade. Widespread ethnic violence in what had been Yugoslavia led to the outbreak of the largest armed conflict in Europe since the end of WWII (since eclipsed by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022). The horrific images beamed worldwide on news programs, newspapers, and magazines shocked the world, bringing back memories of the Holocaust and the outbreak of World War I in 1914, which began in the same region.
Along with the nearly four-year-long siege of Sarajevo, the massacres at Srebrenica reminded the world that despite its modernity and sophistication, Europe still struggled with its dark past, which was made worse with the most modern weapons and technology.
Welcome to a Day in History. Thank you for joining us. Today, we bring you the tragic story of the Srebrenica Massacre during the Balkan Wars of the 1990s.
You’ll sometimes hear a word on the news or history books... “Balkanization.” Balkanization occurs when a larger state breaks down into smaller states, usually hostile to each other. The Balkan Peninsula is the large region to the southeast of Austria across to the Black Sea and south to the borders of Greece and European Turkey. The Balkan countries are Albania, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Kosovo, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Romania, Serbia and Slovenia. Serbia claims Kosovo, but most nations around the world, except for Russia and its allies, recognize it as an independent state. Greece is sometimes listed as a Balkan country as well.
For centuries, warlords, kingdoms, and empires fought over the rugged landscape: Romans, Huns, Magyars, Turks, Russians, Germans; the list goes on and on. In the late 1300s, the Ottoman Turks began to expand into the Balkans and controlled much of the region by the last half of the 1400s. One of the lasting results of the Turkish occupation, which lasted in various forms until the late 19th century, was the conversion of many people in Bosnia to Islam, which, as you might imagine, brought religious conflict into the region. With tensions high between the westward looking and Catholic Croatians or Croats and the eastward-looking Orthodox Serbs, the introduction of a large number of Muslims in the area only increased tension in what was to become Yugoslavia in the early 20th century.

I had heard of the Bosnian Genocide from a video I watched a while back where a man mentioned he was a child at the time the genocide happened. Later on my younger sister and I would read a book called Hotel Sarajevo, I was looking for a book to read and picked this one randomly. That's why it's impossible to dig up mass graves and offer them proper ceremonies because every time you start digging up bodies, you find victims of partisan crimes. Bleiburg says they killed enemy combatants, only one body was dug up and it was a female, Huda Jama says 600+ women and children killed, Maribor says 30k+ killed, but the slovenians started digging for their highway across it and their estimate is according to the partial dig is 40k+. On the other side you have Jasenovac "death camp", where the Ustaše say they killed 17 people, who were sentenced for spreading communism. When they started using the ground penetrating radar they found no mass graves and they dug up a single body who wasnt dumped in a hole, but was wrapped in a blanket with their arms across their chest. Another one is the grave in Maksimir where allegedly killed children were burried, but the grave belongs to the local hospital who was treating hundereds of children for tuberkulosis and dozens of them that died were burried there.

This video glossed over or didn't even mention so many important points, even for the victims of this genocide. But I don't blame you to the fullest extent, neglected history isn't documented properly. Seemed like hell but never heard much about it after the dust settled, so to speak. You did a good job touching on the surface but I do implore others to look into it deeper. Not only because the crimes committed are worse than depicted here but also the uploader didn't touch much on the fighting that went on with NATO. They had boots on the ground early and the fighting and clean up didn't end until 2010. They were not as hands off as this almost made it seem.

imagine because of Bosnians supporting Nazis in Holocaust in yugoslavia killing 2 million people and you say they have no right to be so mad for that? this is what happens when monsters in past create monsters for future and start acting victim when they in their weak times. like it happened Ottomans un Armenia when soviet union came in and started invade Turkey from north east from armenia, what was never mentioned Ottmans the turks were the first ever country who created the so called holocaust by trying to kill Armenians because of their religion. and Soviet union invaded turkey that stoped the holocaust there on armenians. and thats the big reason why turkey is part of european union is because they were getting beaten hard by soviet invasion what made them join EU as get away from war like Ukraine did and Ukraine was having problem from 2014 where Ukrainin Militia were killing ethinc russian people in Donetsk region and ive spoken personally myself with ukraine people and they dont support ukraine for that reason because they have indeed Nazi minded Military groups that broke the war for the country and made russians invade the Donetsk region even i dont support many wars what russians have start in Georgia or others but some were understandable like Chechen war where Othodox Chirstians were killed by Chechen muslim zealots that broke 3 wars around that are because muslims have big problem against other religious people. like in Pakistans, Israel - Palestine and Sudan where wasrs are because of Muslims religion is attacking other religious group. Islam is an war cult and study it well to understand its message.

@@ShoulderPresser No, it's not true, it is also NONSENSICAL - please show QUANTITATIVE data - and anyone could tell you the prior probability of objective science based on genetics and metrics (not discovered until 20th century) comporting with political 19th myth is IMPOSSIBLE. BiH is geographically isolated from Serbia and Croatia with tortuous mountains barely traversable and the free-flow of genes between these inhabitants of these areas is impossible, and Bosnian Muslims (nevermind Bosnins generally) practiced strict endogamy for over 500 years. The focus of Serbian and Croatian elites is annexation of BiH and both parties make the mutually exclusive claim Bosniaks are fallen Croats and/or Serbs. Over the past 80 years, this myth has been amended to account for political realities (a big hint that this is falsehood, as truth never changes):since neither Serbia nor Croatia will control Bosnia fully, so both have determined a simple line can be drawn from the middle, on one side of which are Muslim Croats and on the other side of which are Muslim Serbs. Does this sound scientific to you? The truth of the matter is, not only did Bosniaks ever profess or have consciousness of a Serb identity, Serbia's Muslim populations (Muslim groups actually in Serbia) also did not profess a Serb identity, hence the entire region was cleansed of the dozen or so Slavophone Muslim tribes and ethnic groups in modern Serbia. Serbia itself is a mish-mash of dozens of bastard tribes which never stepped foot in BiH, Croatians are Italian and Hungarian g---sies.

one of the problems of war crimes anywhere is that the scale of the atrocities and the number of perpetrators. even with the best of efforts only the leaders are punished, while the "small fry" slip away through the net. things that in normal circumstances are serious crimes (like looting) are dwarfed by the bestial torture and mass killings. common criminals abused that - posing as militia bent on avenging Serbian or Croat or Muslim victims, they were in fact just robbing people. and most of them were considered not "big enough" to be persecuted after the war. I've spoken to one of the ICTY investigators. He literally told me they couldn't get them all, they had to draw the line somewhere. as horrible as it may sound that meant disregarding "smaller crimes" (even including single murders) to be able to concentrate on bigger ones.

Although killing military service prisoners (war = every male above 16 is a mobilized as a soldier) is a crime on its own.
"Section 1091 of Title 18, United States Code, prohibits genocide whether committed in time of peace or time of war. Genocide is defined in § 1091 and includes violent attacks with the specific intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnic, racial, or religious group. There is Federal jurisdiction if the offense is committed within the United States. There is also Federal extraterritorial jurisdiction when the offender is a national of the United States."
Victims were not women or elderly. Victims were males above 16. If there was an intention of killing to destroy ethnic or religious group, would those women be killed first?
I agree it was an atrocity and that it should not have happened, but it was not a genocide.
And your oversimplification again made bosnia a land of bosniaks, while 56% of the population are not bosniaks. Guess what nationality were they? Serbs and Croats. If bosniaks wanted a independent country, but 56% of population didnt (they either wanted to be part of croatia or stay within Yugoslavia), was this not a issue? Bosnian croats were supported by croats (who were supported by Germans), bosnian serbs were supported by serbia and montenegro, and bosniaks were supported by Turks. This extremely complex problem of bosnia, financed by outside parties, was turned into a war.
Bosnia is a beautiful country of three nationalities which lived and produced some of the best people, art, and music. And it was politicians, not NATIONS, who destroyed it. Hatred was pushed upon, and could have been easily avoided if politicians did not use hatred of few to warm up the tensions.

I agree the narrator is one sided.
Absolutely nothing is mentioned about genocidal Yugoslavia's repression of Bosnian Muslims before the war in Bosnia-Herzegovina, or in World War 2, or in the 19th century, and worse, Bosniak are labelled "genetic Serbs and Croats" by the narrator, with no evidence whatsoever. The Siege of Srebrenica, Bihac and Gorazde - the systematic starvation of Bosniaks is not mentioned.
Nothing is mentioned about Karadjordjevo, which blows out of the water the Serbian narrative of war, because it shows the aggression was planned in advance.

  • @FilipPetrovic999
    @FilipPetrovic999 4 месяца назад +17

Srebrenica is a great tragedy of the Bosnian people and probably the biggest obstacle between the reconciliation of Serbs and Bosniaks. However, to call a massacre in which men were selectively killed, while women and children were spared, a genocide is really strange. The Hague Tribunal literally invented a new definition of genocide just to tarnish the reputation of the Serbs, not realizing that this relativizes every other genocide that happened in the history of mankind in which entire nations were exterminated.
I don't want to minimize the pain of the crimes that were committed, but to compare 8000 dead with the extermination of entire nations is humiliating for all the victims of real genocides that happened, like the Holocaust, or Armenian, or Rwandan genocide.

Croats and Serbs have hated each other since World War II. The Croats were on the side of Hitler's Germany and killed more than 700,000 primarily Serbs, women and children in the camps of the independent state of Croatia. The Serbs suffered from the Croats just as the Jews suffered from the Germans. They had camps for children. Bosnian Muslims were their collaborators in the genocide of the Serbs. Bosnian Muslims were fighting mostly in the Partisans, about 80% of Partisan forces were compromised of Bosniak Muslims, while Serbs were fighting under Drago Draža Mihajlović, a Nazi collaborator. The said Muslims who fought with Nazis are Krajišnici, a region in the northwest of the country called Krajina, who joined arms with Croats and Nazi because they offered them weapons, which they badly needed because from 1918-1943 Serbs were ethnically cleansing villages, in 1943 some 143 villages were cleansed. These Muslim forces were later on during the war redeployed in southern France and ordered by Nazis to kill the French, after which they rebelled, joined the French resistance and fought with them against Nazis.
So no, Bosnians fought Nazis, Serbs collaborated with Hitler, you won't hear this from Serbs because Serbs don't tell the truth, they tell their truth

What is the Bosnian analogue of the destruction of East Mostar, the ethnic cleansing of Banja Luka, concentration camps in Trnopolje and Omarska, genocide in Srebrenica and so on? Please tell me where a single mass grave of Serb or Croat victims exists in BiH, seeing as you know so much. I'd love to hear it.
The fact is, Serbs and Croats showed up to Bosnian villages and killed wantonly, having had detailed preparations to attack BiH a year before. Their objective was to split Bosnia along the Neretva River at the expense of Bosniaks and they had no plans on even encountering military resistance, in fact bragged their victims were unarmed.
At the outset of Serbia's and Croatia's war of choice against BiH, there wasn't even a Bosnian Army. What do you call mass killings and concentration camps in the absence of military objectives? What do you call beisegement that causes starvation and the loss of 30 pounds per person, with constant targeting of urban settlements?
If you recognize that fact and take it to its logical conclusion, it will make sense why Bosnians were indeed seen as victims.
The only reason there is a single Bosniak alive today is both Serbs (average IQ ~ 85), Montenegrins and Croats are hilariously incompetent - could not genocide a population they outnumbered nine to one!

They are spreading the lie that around Srebrenica there were innocent and friendly Serbian villages with some 3,500 civilian victims. I wonder how they think Srebrenica was besieged and surrounded? Was that the work of Serb civilians? There were not even 3,500 Serb civilian victims in the whole of Bosnia, let alone around Srebrenica. The truth is Podrinje, where Srebrenica is located, was Bosniak, and attacking it from April 1992 was the Drina Corps and Serb militants, who besieged an area that increased in population by a factor of five because Bosniaks had been driven out of their homes.
All Serbs age sixteen and above in the area had a weapon, while Bosniaks didn't have even food. The civilian population that did not wish to participate in fighting fled in the early days, mostly to Bratunac but some to Serbia.
Serbs are pathological liars. Every single one is a liar.

I like this video, but there are a couple of inaccuracies. (i) The investigative and judicial organisation that investigated and prosecuted alleged war crimes during the Balkan war was known as the International criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia a.k.a. the ICTY and is not the International Criminal Court (ICC) which is a newer establishment created when the ICTY was in its final years; (ii) Radovan Karadžić, having been found guilty of war crimes including genocide was initially sentenced to 40 years imprisonment but on appeal by the prosecution his 40 years sentence was increased to life imprisonment. Ratko Mladić was also found guilty of war crimes including genocide and he was also sentenced to life imprisonment.

Some Bosnian Muslims were allied with Croats during WWII and the initial stage of the 1990s conflict. These had committed genocidal acts on the Serbs during WWII and this had consequences 50 years later. Another interesting point is that the same man who started the Palestinian/Israel conflict almost singlehandedly is the same person who recruited SS troops amongst Bosnian Muslims: Amin Husseini.
