  • The 20th century had no shortage of terrible events that cast a shadow over people today. The deaths of over a million Armenians is one such tragedy. Few tragedies have faced such bitter political discussion after the fact as the Armenian Incident. , others deny it ever happened, insist it was an accident, or that it was a justified response to a political threat.
In this video, we look at the unspeakable things that happened in the Armenian Incident and how its complicated legacy is still hotly debated today. If you appreciate these videos, leave a like to show your support and subscribe to A Day In History for more content like this.
    Setting the Stage
Nestled in the Caucasus Mountains on the border between Europe and Asia, Armenia’s long history has seen it caught between countless empires. By the late 19th century, Western Armenia was firmly under the control of the Ottoman Empire while a smaller Eastern portion was controlled by the Russians. The Armenians of the Ottoman Empire faced many obstacles. As a Christian minority in a Muslim-majority Empire, they were subject to legal discrimination and higher taxes. Over time, racial ideologies that privileged ethnic Turks opened new opportunities for anti-Armenian discrimination.
Another significant obstacle was their role as a middleman minority. A middleman minority is an ethnic group that is overrepresented in occupations like bankers, merchants, and bureaucrats relative to their small overall population. Other middleman minorities around the world included the Chinese in Southeast Asia, the Gujaratis in India, and most famously the Jews in Europe and the United States. Although only a small percentage of Armenians worked in these lucrative jobs, all Armenians were subject to discrimination that described them as parasites, thieves, and leeches who were stealing the wealth of the rest of the population.
This caused outbreaks of violence and persecution throughout the late 19th century. The Ottoman government regularly seized Armenian land to redistribute to Muslim and Kurdish settlers and the Kurdish Hamidian regiments were given free reign to raid Armenian villages as part of their resettlement. Despite attempts to muster international support, the Armenians were left to defend themselves and formed a number of impromptu militia groups to defend their towns, but the Ottoman authorities interpreted this as a sign of rebellion and cracked down hard in the 1890s.

Yes, all genocides need to be recognized. But, Armenian genocide had a much more profoubd effect on Armenians than any itger poppulation. Only Greeks amd assyrians were close. When it says significant, that means in million and a large chunk of land lost and stripped of Armenians. Syrian orthodox never suffered to that extent in the hands of ottomans. Also, in recent decades, the Armenian genocide movements by Armenisn communities around the world have brought attention to Greek and Assyrian genocides as well.

From the memoirs of Kazim Karabekir, Commander of the Eastern Army of the Ottoman Empire.
"I got so close to Erzurum that I was close enough to see
people's teeth. When I got a little closer, I felt something unnatural.
These people were not moving at all. When I got closer, I saw with agony that each of them had been impaled alive. Their faces were stiff with pain, they were not smiling. What my eyes see, God don't let it show any other eye on the world"
This is how he wrote about the torture inflicted by Armenians on Turks in his memoirs Kazim Karabekir.

The amazing fact is that in India as recently as 1990 lakhs of Hindus have to migrate from Muslim majority Kashmir state due to killings in mass scale and mass rapes. No West or Muslim countries cared and they downplayed as if nothing happened. But if other way around whole world will cry foul.

Try to do Rebbellion in USA and see how you will pay for it. Even Russia is ready to use nucleair weapon for any attack to his country. No any country accept any terorist movements and seperated movements if you you pay for it. Holocaust was etnick cleansing the jews. About the Armenians it was a Rebbellion to the state even Etnick Turks did rebbellion in the ottoman time they payed for it. Thousands of Armenians found their new home in Bulgaria during this terrible period. They were welcomed and accepted, and are now a valued part of our society.
One of Bulgaria's most famous poets - Peyo Yavorov, wrote a special poem about the Armenian refugees. A very strong one. Here's a small part:
    "Wretched exiles, rare survivors
Of a brave and martyr race
    Children of a captive mother
    Heroes with no resting place.
Far from home in squalid hovels
Sick and pale from lack of sleep.
See them drink to drown their sorrows
Hear them sing and, singing, weep!
    Drink… "

History is science, it is written with evidence. Archive records and international population records prove that 592 thousand Turkish civilians were killed by Armenians in Russian-occupied regions. 450 thousand Armenians in this region were exiled to Syria. Tens of thousands of Armenian terrorists were caught and executed. Most of the Armenians in other parts of Turkey left the country over time after the Turkish army won the War of Independence. If you look at the international census of the 1900s, you will see that the story is a lie.

After the Turks left, a Moslem Syrian family was fleeing the bloodshed and was passing by the house and heard a baby crying. They went in and found her. And the reason why the Armenians were able to get revenge on these Aholes was because the Turkish government exiled them. Sadly, the Armenians had to take vengeance into their own hands, because international law did not exist at the time to protect the citizens of a nation from being killed by their own government. Keep in mind that that the ottomans took western Armenia and forced its population to become citizens of the empire. Therefore, why are you killing your "own" people?

We presented musical concerts in Yerevan, and other cities. where the people were so kind and gracious. The historical locations, museums and beautiful country were a memory we shall never forget. Defending is sadistic but you have to understand the conditions during that period in the Ottoman Empire. The government feeled themselve stabbed in their back in multiple regions (Balkans, Middle East, Armenia) and because of this the Turks suffered also same massacres in this regions and plus of that the ww1 and defeats in the caucaus front caused a massive amount of rage and paranoia in the Turkish government. So after all this events this was the result. İts sad it shouldnt be happened but history is full of violence in every single region in this world. İt his how it is. As a Turk i have no hatred to Armenians or Greeks etc and i am not defending this events but this events didnt came from air or from nothing. The last 50-60 years of Ottoman Empire is such a mess and clusterfck and caused a lot of problems and suffering for the nations inside the Empire including the Turks himself. İn the end of the day we Turks suffered the most.

I'm not Armenian but as a Hindu who is learning about our own past genocides which were religiously motivated and perpetrated by the Turks (mughals) who ruled us for 800 yrs , It is sad that our histories rarely get told and almost never in an honest way. That being said, I'm sad to see india is not on the list as recognising the genocide which i strongly think they should.

His father bribed him out of the Turkish army (forced labor battalion, later massacred) and sent him to the USA to earn enough to get the rest of the family out. He had 10 siblings. He kept sending money back until he got a letter from Turkish neighbors that some time back they had witnessed his whole extended family, along with all the other local Armenians, marched into their church by the local police and burned to the ground. The Turkish family somehow became aware that he was sending money and the local officials were taking it for themselves and thought it was funny. They wrote to have him stop, and to tell him that some female cousins from another village had been sold into slavery and some children had been claimed by Muslim families and converted. Besides, Greek historians shout out loud about atrocities committed against Greeks whilst keeping shtum about their own. My grandmothers village is in Erzincan. They had very good relationships with Armenians and living altogether, hard working, very talented in gold jewelery and peaceful people she was telling me. During Turkish War of independence Russians promised to give them land from Turkey if they fight with them against Turkish. Armenians turned against turkish and my grandma told people were disappering who were working in Armenian shops. They used to kill them and bury them. Russian armed them to attack turkish. Then this caused hatred. After turkish gained power by defeating the other foreign countries they did not want to live with Armenian anymore. Some turkish was greedy and crucial. They took the gold, houses, stores etc from Armenians. One time in Sivas, turkish villagers put Armenians in a church, closed the doorand burned them alive. this is horrific. There was a small armenian girl hidden from slaughter by her neighbours. Then after some time, her brother who survived came to the village for revenge armed. When he saw her little sister well taken care of, he gave gold to the family who raised her and left with his sister.
