Με χωρητικότητα 20.000 περίπου θεατών αποτελεί ένα από τα μεγαλύτερα αρχαία θέατρα στον ελλαδικό χώρο. Στην μακρόχρονη χρήση του φιλοξένησε τους μουσικούς και δραματικούς αγώνες των Νεμέων, καθώς και αγώνες προς τιμήν της Ήρας. Στα Ρωμαïκά χρόνια πρέπει να καθιερώθηκαν και αγώνες προς τιμήν του αυτοκράτορα.
Στις μέρες μας κάθε καλοκαίρι φιλοξενεί παραστάσεις στο πλαίσιο του φεστιβάλ που διοργανώνει ο Δήμος Άργους-Μυκηνών.
Στο βίντεο αυτό σας παραθέτω αναλυτικά στοιχεία, συνοδευόμενα από εναέρια και επίγεια πλάνα, για το αρχαίο θέατρο, το σαραπείο-ασκληπιείο-θέρμες, το θέατρο με τα ευθύγραμμα εδώλια-ωδείο καθώς και για την αρχαία αγορά που βρίσκεται νοτιοανατολικά του αρχαίου θεάτρου.
Ancient theater of Argos.
The theater was founded during Hellenistic times. With a capacity of approximately 20,000 spectators, it is one of the largest ancient theaters in Greece. During its long-term use, it hosted the musical and dramatic games of the Nemeans, as well as games in honor of Hera. In Roman times, competitions in honor of the emperor must have been established.
Nowadays, every summer it hosts performances as part of the festival organized by the Municipality of Argos-Mycenae.
During the first half of the second century after Christ, the scenic building of the theater, it was rebuilt, according to Roman standards. With the introduction of new spectacles, such as duels and beast fight, built to protect the spectators, an enclosure, that was fixed to holes made in the orchestra area.
In the fourth century after, Christ in the orchestra of the theater., a reservoir was built that hosted water sports. A large aqueduct started from the south aisle, surrounded the kilo at the level of the fourth tier and fed the reservoir from its northern end.
The theater ceased to function in the fifth to sixth centuries after that. Christ, but a large part of the hollow remained visible and was depicted by the travelers who visited Argos during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. To the south of the theatre there is the theater with the straight seats which was carved into the natural rock in the fifth century after Christ and is one of the oldest Greek theatres. At the end of the first century, after Christ, the theater acquires a roofed form and turns into a conservatory.
South-east of the theater is the ancient market. Within this area there is the market theater, as well as the hero which was in honor of the Argive heroes who campaigned against the Thebes under the leadership of the Argive King Adrastos.
There was also the gymnasium and the street, where youths without social distinctions exercised their minds and bodies and tested themselves in virtue.
