Im 5 10 I keep the screen in high position mostly and unless it is windy day (depending on direction) I have zero issues with the supposed buffeting others complain about but then I also have zero issues with the seat that so many testers claim is horrible ...dont get me wrong I am not saying it is plush or wonderful but it causes me no pain in particular either even riding for 5 hours or more. The one downside I DO aggree with is that the brakes are rather lack luster ...I think Yamaha really dropped the ball not giving this bike better binders ....it is 70 pounds heavier than the MT09 after all (that I assume has these same brakes.?) Oh I also aggree with complaints that the little wheel control on the right grip is clumsy and the guages are not all that great....it takes some getting used to and there is no excuse for it if you ask me
What I find interesting about a lot of bikes (I may be the only person who finds this interesting) is that you say that you find yourself short shifting. I would imagine that's at around 7k, as both the power climbs steeply between 6.5 and 7 and the torque max's out. So, probably, for a large chunk of the time, you're riding a 95 bhp bike... I think a lot of people look at bhp figures as what they will get when they are riding it, but for a lot of the time, I think it's more important to see what you're getting in the mid range... Unless it's a track bike, top end power has very little relevance....
You could spin that to be a bad thing, but personally (and contrary to popular sayings), I prefer to ride a fast bike slow. For day to day riding, I like feeling like I’m not stressing my bike. Like it’s designed to handle a lot more, but only if I want to use it. I’d much rather use 95/115hp than 95/95hp.
Thats all true enough until one is playing ...maybe only brief bursts but its there when you need it! Its how I see it...it like other aspects of a bike what it CAN do in the extreme yet rarely called on like extreme braking or top speed or weight capacity etc etc. At the other end folks buying tiny motorcycles and wringing the bike's neck every minute to keep up with traffic lol
Yea I've ridden a few tracers and that engine is all about the mid range, after 7k it kinda loses interest, ( still producing good power though) but really lovely up to it. When touring on my old fazer 1000, with a mate on a 17 reg tracer, I felt the tracer felt like a whippet compared to the greyhound fazer. I. E. Super enthusiastic, but waned ultimately.. Great though!!
in the end it doesn't matter, one enjoys the bike and shifts they way they feel like, obviously if one feels the need for more power one allows the revs to go higher, but nobody is worried if they are using every last HP from the bike if you aren't racing
Another superb video! As I've had the T9-GT since they came out; moving from a 2018 T900-GT, I watch any videos of these bikes with interest. Here's my 2-pence worth: Engine Performance - This is certainly a step-up in torque from the previous version, with less vibration and smoother (yet more 'urgent') power delivery. Bike for bike, on the road, I don't think I'd be any quicker on my MT-10 than this, which would only really get ahead once the speed limit has been passed. Economy - This does depend on how you ride it. Sticking the cruise control on at 50mph on the motorway would no doubt see impressive numbers, but I always feel like the delta between sensible and fun is a 'fuel tax' worth paying. However, knowing that this bike can deliver good mileage is no bad thing. I get circa 200 miles to a tank on a relaxing motorway run and less when pushing or stop/start. Engine Character - As mentioned above, power isn't lacking. I'm not a fan of the sound of triples though. Moreover, I think I'm probably the only person who thinks this bike is too loud! Maybe it's the exhaust exiting the bottom of the bike and the reflection back up to the rider, or maybe Yamaha's deliberate enhancement of the induction noise that's to blame, but I'd definitely prefer a little less of whatever it is. Valve Clearances & Servicing - I've not got that far yet. Brakes - I have to say, these impressed me. I do lean quite heavily on the front brake, perhaps partly down to being a regular track rider. I like to trail-brake and take some liberties and these have plenty of power. Yes, the feel may be a little numb, but they're on the better side of adequate. Suspension - I have the GT, so the bike is fitted with Semi-Active KYB suspension. There's a noticeable difference between A1 and A2 settings and I tend to use A1 for all but the most uneven of roads. I feel like there's plenty of braking and acceleration damping, as well as good control of rebound. It does a respectable job all round. The Screen - Typically, the bigger the screen (and more upright it is) the bigger the potential difference in air-pressure between front and back. The faster you go the more the air is going to want to fill that area of low-pressure and buffeting will ensue. There are a few additional parameters to consider; helmet, weather, clothing, size shape of rider etc. and it all comes down to a compromise of how much weather protection you want vs how much buffeting you can tolerate. I personally (at 182cm) find an MRA Spoiler on a stock screen is 'ok'. Others' experiences will differ, so I personally think this comes down to individual trial and error. Seat Comfort - I found the stock seat fine. However, I like to have some warmth, so changed to the heated seat very early on; as I did with my previous 2018. Integration of the heated seat on the 2021 is very good and heat levels are easy to see on the dash, next to the grips display. Stability - I have had no problems with this, at varying speeds. I appreciate others have suggested it's not great, but I can only comment from my own experience here. Best Tyres - I've got on well with the OE Bridgestones and suspect I'll stick with these when the time comes to change. Pillion & Luggage - I don't carry pillions, so can't comment on that. Luggage wise however, I have fully loaded the Panniers on a trip away, including my SW-Motech ADV style Top-Box and it has been fantastic. The Panniers are a good size and being able to stow a helmet is very useful. Value for Money - This is a real strength for the T9. At circa £12k, with a trade in the PCP makes this an affordable every-day bike. I use mine (and my last 2018) for commuting, touring, and racking up the mileage. PCP makes sense and takes away a little bit of the 'I don't want to get her dirty' issue I have with bikes I actually own. I take receipt, cover in ACF-50, and keep regularly re-applying for the three year term. When it comes time to hand the bike back it's always mint! She looks a little dishevelled in the meantime, but it's a workhorse for me. Styling & Build Quality - As mentioned, covering in ACF-50, and the added fact that I have a humidity-controlled garage, keeps the bike pristine (underneath the dirt!) and I've found no issues with parts deteriorating. The flimsiest bit I touch daily is the paper-thin USB bracket, which belies the otherwise very good quality componentry. I also LOVE the way this bike looks, and I'd happily give a detailed walk-around to explain why I think so! I think it's a clever, inspired design, that has a perfect (for me) mix of both utilitarian and beautifully eye-catching aesthetics. Likes & Dislikes - I'll be brief here, as you're probably nodding off with such a long post! I like everything bar the following: The data wheel needs to be on the left-hand side, as it's a pain to use when also controlling the throttle and I shouldn't have to be at a standstill or have the cruise control on to avoid jerking the throttle every time I want to adjust the grip heat. The USB socket bracket is made of cheese, and not a very strong cheese at that. The key is a bit buried, but I guess it needs to engage the steering lock so possibly unavoidable. I find it too loud, as mentioned earlier. Screen aerodynamics could be improved; there are simple ways of providing better air pressure balance and it would be nice to see some advancements here. Would I buy one - I did, so that’s a big yes! AOB: I’ve had both recalls carried out on my bike and the ECU re-map element of this transformed the throttle response, QS/Blipper smoothness, and eliminated the stalling problem I had when riding through congested traffic. Having been an Engineer for 25-years I can’t bring myself to criticise companies for minor defects, I’m more interested in how they rectify problems. As such, my Main Dealer (as always) was fantastic, minimising any disruption and ultimately rectifying the issue.
@@TheF4llen77 No worries, having re-read it, 2-years on, I wouldn’t change anything. I’m now on my second T9-GT, as I accumulated so many miles on the last one I was in danger of having little residual value for the PCP trade in. I grabbed another new (2023) and have covered another 12k trouble-free miles to date. You mention the GT+. I did consider this, but on balance I decided not to. The main benefits of the GT+ are the integrated SatNav and the Adaptive Cruise. I have the adaptive cruise on my car, and it drives me nuts in anything other than in slow, stop/start traffic, at which point, on the bike, I’d be filtering through. The integrated Nav appears to be a paid subscription based thing. It’s also a bit of a step backward to when my Nav was mounted on the handlebar yolk, something I personally didn’t like. My Garmin XT is mounted high up, so I don’t have to take my eyes off the road for more than a cursory glance. Therefore, the two benefits of the GT+ didn’t seem worth it for me, but others may have a very different view.
Nice review, not got a Tracer or even a Yamaha but owned many in the past. I do have a few GS’s including a 750 I know it’s different and probably never really pushed but it’s returning nearly 70mpg. That aside just wanted to comment on screens and height because I think this is the wrong measure. I’m just over 6 foot but only have a 32 inch inside leg meaning longer upper body so I tend to sit higher up and always have problems with screens. A comparison would be another RUclipsr TMF who says he has a 32 inch inside leg but is only 5 foot 8. So it’s not just height it’s how your body is composed that matters how good a screen is going to be for you.
Good review chaps… Just have a few of my own thoughts to add here after my first 6,500 miles. The 1st thing to address is the high speed stability issue, this is purely down to the screen choice as I now well know, after trying several different ones on mine, it does not like a tall screen on at all when you get close to 3-digit speeds!! I now have a Givi screen (which properly shields the USB port) on mine, which I have had to cut 3-inches off the top of, as the turbulence was actually worse than the original screen, never thought that could actually be possible!?.. It’s much better now as a result, and is the best one I’ve tried on it so far, thankfully, as this issue has been a total nightmare for me.. 2nd is the mpg, I nearly always get 170 miles before the last bar starts flashing, and I’ve actually covered a further 42 miles once it does, which gives me an average of 52mpg, and I’m not going easy on it for a good 50% of each ride.. In fact, during last years tour I managed to get 245 miles between a couple of fuel stops, giving me an average of 61mpg! Their have been two recalls on this bike, the latter being an ECU remap from Yamaha, that addresses the stalling issue on the bike, with the other being a throttle tube replacement from plastic to a metal one.. It’s a brilliantly spec’d bike for the money, not much comes close to it in terms of value, yes it’s not perfect - but no bike is IMO!.. And looks are always subjective, and personally I do really like the look of it. Mine is in the Tech Kamo colour scheme, which I personably think it looks the best in! 😎 I’d agree entirely with that comment, with it being a Swiss Army Knife of a bike! 👍🏻 I still love mine and have no plans to swap in anytime soon.
I see no reason to exceed "the ton" though I have got carried away a time or two and never the slightest wobble detected....I'm not calling anyone a liar of course as there are so many variables in roads and the loads one ends up with. I am generally carrying light luggage and I weigh "only" 200llbs with all my substantial gear on. I keep the seat in the low position and the suspension mostly in A1 unless I am riding for more than several hours in a go. The preload I keep at factory setting tires also factory specs 42 rear 36 front....no wobbles just really nice handling. What a wonderful motorcycle! I am not inclined to trade it in unless the 2023 tempts me with new clocks and radar cruise control and more! I am already dreaming how good that will be! Would LOVE to see better brakes on the 2021 Tracer 9GT +
I have a '16 super tenere. Just sold my 03 fz1 (which I owned for 17 years). I test rode a tracer 9 gt yesterday. It felt very high quality, excellent all around. What I was concerned about was how light and twitchy the front end felt even compared to my fz. That can be fun but much of my riding is loaded for camping. I'm worried about having to pay too much attention to the front tire.
28:10 Saying the Bridgestone T32's are really good while there is still hair on the tyre... This hurts my eyes and doesnt justify the statement that they are really good Nice review. Love how u at least road them for a long time instead of just 1 trip of an hour and reviewing. Keep up the good work
Hi..just brought the new tracer 9gt yesterday!...turned on RUclips and I can't believe it..there was your video on the tracer 9gt. So I watched it and I have to agree with everything you both said about the bike spot on!... I have the old tracer 900 GT and wanted to up grade to either Kawasaki Ninja 1000sx or the Suzuki gsxs1000gt. But nothing beats the tracer when it comes to value for money, and I have always said its a "jack of all trades and master of none!" But what Simon was right in saying was "when you look back it should make you think wow that's my bike!" and ok it doesn't!. But for me I need that Swiss army knife!.
I'd really like to know which the bikes are that Simon mentioned were hard to give back after a long test period. Brilliant review, really liked the exchanged and added opinions of the owners.
I’ve got 20,000 km on my 2021 9gt. All comments I totally agree with. Fantastic bike. But does not inspire romantic love at first sight like some others. That said. Not going to sell mine anytime soon. Too perfect a ride. Things I love. All the pro’s they mentioned. Things I don’t The one sided headlamp, the seat just sucks so bought a Corbin that doesn’t make me slide my nuts into the tank, bought highway pegs to stretch my legs, got rid of bug screen and bought a shorty windshield. The best part about this bike is riding it - that seems about right.
Wow! Long, but extremely detailed! Thank you! I’m Seriously considering this as my next bike, but have not found a dealer willing to demo. However, l loved the demo ride of the MT-09 SP!
I had the first tracer and went through 5 screens and ended up the best was no screen. Nice video comparing older versions and very detailed and love using the feedback from owners. Great idea. Re the triples, my last 3 bikes all been triples and love them.
Love the charts! The fact that you took the time to survey other riders was interesting and helpful. Thinking about the bike in the states. The tiny main LED lights are worrisome. I’ve had people roll down their windows at a stoplight and tell me that one of my lights was burned out. I wish Yamaha would just keep both bulbs on with low beam.

It depends on the law... In EU the bikes must have odd numbers off lights....
I finally got to test one today and loved it. The seating position, the feel, so many things have put this in contention as my next bike. But I agree with them about the looks, just don’t love the looks.
Excellent and very thorough John 👍👍 love SH, he's a great journo these days - plus he was at Performance Bikes in the 90s, it was the best magazine by a distance, fun, factual, inventive and really well produced...plus I was younger !
Demo'd the MT09 and Tracer 9 GT+ on Saturday (back to back) - re the buffeting and the screen - I found the screen less MT09 less noisy with less buffeting up to 95mph and it was windy too. The Tracer screen seemed to push the wind right at my head 😁 That engine is a peach - the ergonomics of the Tracer just fit so well. Flickable on country roads using the midrange in 4th gear was a joy. The ride home on my CBR felt uncomfortable if I'm honest 😊 I'm now looking to get the Tracer GT though I need to demo that as the Plus has one screen rather than 2... Great video guys 👌
@@bennettsbikesocial Will do! At the moment this bike is on the list plus the Kawasaki Ninja 1000 SX, Suzuki GSX-1000 GT and the new Triumph Tiger 660 Sport.
Great vid of two blokes raving about how good a bike is for an hour, then when asked if they would buy one? answer "Nah" still right up the top of my list for next bike... (used Dulville included)
Great review. Very in detail, covering more than you usually get from any kind of review. So, a big thumb up here. Subscribed for a long time. :) Keep going guys.
What a fantastic and thorough review! All bike reviews should follow this format. I own a MT09 Tracer and I get the weave behind high sided vehicles. I presumed it was the short swinger arm or crap suspension. The tracer 9 hasn't improved this.
There is a recall for the engine stalling (software update). Still riding my sporty first mt-09 tracer! Hearing your story the new one is more comfy / touring. Greets from Holland.
Great video, I love mine, the recent recall's made it ever smoother, not done mega miles on mine yet, dont like the tiny text etc on the L screen I thought the OEM tyres are fine, buffeting from the screen can be a tad annoying, apart from that what a loverly functional bike, M
Hi gents, great review as always! I've been watching your review on the Kawasaki Versys 1000 (2019 tho) for which you said you would buy it as for a great allarounder. Would you finally choose the T9(GT) over the Kawa?
Although I blanched at the 56 minute commitment...this was a very valuable wrap-up review. As bikes get better, they become initially less emotional (not unlike, say, a Lexus). But for people who can only afford one, or only really WANT one, that is not a bad thing. In fact, it's a huge positive because you can count on it to do what you NEED it to do, whenever and wherever you need it - without fostering a love-hate relationship! The overall capability is quite amazing. Yamaha needs to up their interactive-ergonomic game (switchgear, dash), but that should never be a deal breaker for someone who requires a dependable get-on-and-ride it rig. Thank you for a great set of reviews! I'd sure like to see a similar effort for the Suzuki S1000GT, a bike that will absolutely be cross-shopped.
Great review:) This type of high quality and in-depth content really set this channel apart. I own a 2018 Tracer 900. I still love it, especially the engine. The wind buffeting is annoying, but can be solved with smaller sport screens (even though this did consequently caused back issues on longer days in the saddle due to added pressure on the chest and shoulders:))
Will try to arrange a test ride these days. :) I am really interested in this bike, just the standard one. :) Anyways can check my content. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.
Great discussions, you should do more of these! Thank you 👍 @ 27:00 the first generation of the Yamaha Tracer 900 was temporarily removed from the use of French police forces in 2019 because it sometimes showed hazardous behavior on bumpy roads at very brisk paces. Rhythms to which the police and gendarmes of the motorized brigades are nevertheless forced... Yet those bikes were not the same than the normal bikes (strengthen schock, modified aerodynamics because of the luggages,...). But as far as I know, there has not been the same concerns with the next generations.
Good review. Wouldn’t disagree with anything you said. I use mine to tour and as a weekend pooteler. I only have room for one bike and for the money it’s brilliant. Bought with 3,000 miles on it and I’d say it’s the best all round bike on the market at the moment. Looks like it was designed by a 16yo though so tend to walk away quickly when I park it up.
Interesting to hear your comment about the clutch snatch when cold. I have had exactly the same issue with my MT10. One frosty morning it took three attemps to get away!! I suspect this is more than just an adjustment problem, as the issue was acompanied by a strangely heavy feel from the clutch lever. I wonder if there is a sticking plate, or slipper mechanism problem at play?
Which bikes would you buy over this one with your own money? You didn't mention specific bikes in the video.Cheers for the videos by the way. I'm always watching!
The only two things I'd change are - the stock screen and the Mode button. Otherwise it's great. The clocks suit me, all the small digits are on things i never change, I like the programmability of the second screen to see things i care about in bigger letters - in particular the cruise control target speed. It's comfortable and eats miles without being as heavy or expensive as the GS or Triumph 1200.
Got a 2017 and still own it, it’s that good after a couple mods. The screen was like a hurricane, absolute crap. No screen in summer, very tall Givi with deflector in winter. The only screen that stopped the noise after trying loads. Nitron rear shock sorted the handling. All in, now a great bike where I can use the full power of the engine for a very reasonable total cost. Oh, and did I mention how light it is?
I think that was a good overview in general. I have done a couple of thousand miles on my Tracer 9 after owning a 2015 MT 09 Tracer. I have to say I would agree the only big issue is the screen. Ive changed mine for the Ermax sport and its much better but the original bikes screen was pants too, and the old one was not the bike this is. I love mine and totally agree that if you can only afford one bike and you want it to do everything this is a great option at a relatively (compared to some of the competition) good price. PS I dont have an issue with the clocks i think they add character (all be it the character of a diver)
I had the tracer 900 gt with lots of upgrades to it. 320 brake rotors and braided brake lines, k-tech rear shock and k-tech cartridge front. Flashed the ecu with an aftermarket exhaust resulted in a much smoother throttle. Also had the ermax short screen. But no matter what i did the bike still handled ''funny''. Before the tracer i had a 2016 kawasaki z1000sx. The kawi is a much better bike for sport touring with emphasis on the sport side. Sold the tracer for a 2020 mt-10. Best decision ever, I'm in love with that one :D Greetings from sunny Greece
Great review. I agree with many of the things said. I've had mine since June 2021 and have only put in a little over 4k miles at this point. That said, I think I know what I like and don't like about the bike. Since I agree with most of the opinions, I'll just mention that thing I like the most and hate the most. Hate the Most: Dash controls. More often than not, when I try to select the thing I want, I end up scrolling past it. Like the Most: Engine. My first triple and it has been a joy to ride around town and in the Rockies.
Love your video lads, especially this on as I did once own and MT09 for a few years, I now own an MT10 which I love. Merry Everything and a Happy New Year.
Mode button where headlight flash is Soooo annoying 😡, my gixxer is the same, hate it. On paper, during your chat, and in the flesh (metal), this should be the perfect bike for me. But I just can’t pull the trigger on it with it being such an uninspiring fugly thing (I’m with Simon) with ridiculous tiny clocks I can’t read. Presently stuck in a never ending cycle of thinking about M/Strada V2S - Tiger 900 Roadie Pro - Tiger Sport 660. Heart says Tigger9 🤔. Great Video boys 👍
as an owner of a 2019 tracer 900 GT , and an 2021 1250 GS Rallye which im about to sell, the tracer is absolutely an awesome ride which is why im keeping it
This review is spot on. I own a Tracer 9 GT 2021 and agree on everything said here. Ridden it a bit over 5500 km. Personally this bike is like 13/10 in terms of quality/price value. You get so much comfort, fun, performance and safety. My wife rides pillion on this with me and she loves the safety and ease that this bike gives her. It's just simply superbly enjoyable. Only negative I have to say is that the standard screen on this is absolutely horrible. All I had to do though was simply just buy another screen and the problems went away. I got myself a PUIG sport screen and that looks really good on the bike.
When speaking about build quality I’m surprised that you didn’t touch on the exhaust. The one on John’s bike is pretty sorry looking for a bike with 5-6000 miles on the clock.
it’s a huge advantage for me and I don’t know why, but people usually don’t mention that thing. During weekend ride on the Tracer 9 GT, I found that there is NO heat that comes from the engine to rider - at all! That’s huge deal for me, as I recently tried Monster 937 and it burned my ass and left leg, it was not possible for me to ride the bike during C 25+ in the city. Similar feedback I hear from the Tiger 900 owners (direct competitor) - radiator fans positioned in a way that puts hot air flow directly to your knees and during summer in traffic it’s hart to stand the heat, so they need to install additional wing to redirect the flow, but it falls off because of high temperatures affect the adhesives. I realised that it is a quite big thing for me and I cannot enjoy the ride when bike cooks me alive, so on top of other pros that you’ve mentioned - seems like Tracer 9 is something that will tick alI boxes for me.
One does get spoiled with no engine heat. Test rode a Vstrom 800 and at first I didn’t understand what it was (quite a hot day) but by the end of the ride I was roasted. Back to the tracer 7 it was.
Great video. I just purchased the 21 model my local dealer had leftover , I absolutely love this bike except for 1 thing…..the seat !!!! It’s pitch towards the tank makes it very uncomfortable to ride , I’d rather have it level.
Hoping to purchase a used Tracer soon. What model year are the Tracers you tested and what "prior" models might provide the same performance and satisfaction? Thanks!
I love everything about this bike except that display setup, feels like I am staring at someone where one of those silly glasses/nose masks with the large eyebrows! Once someone pointed that out in another video, I can't unsee it! Not a deal breaker, but I wish they had kept the display from the previous version!
Great review. Yes, I have the '15. I've had many bikes, and this is great for "real world use", but I'm not passionate about it. Funny thing is, as you mentioned...it gets you to places quick. Never late for work on it. But now that I work from home?...well now it just kind of sits there. Yeah, enough said. The girl next door, but not the prom queen!
My friend is very unhappy with his new 22 plate gt as he’s sure the front wheel bearings have gone (under 200 miles). Dealer still looking into it, as the is a strange noise?
I’m getting rid of my 2017 GSX1000-S to get one of these. I test rode one on a whim, thought I’d think nothing of it but it made me think about all the things I haven’t got on the GSX. Albeit the GSX is a naked beast, but that’s half the problem; 163 bhp (full system and re-map) and you just get battered all over the place. And unless you’re on a track, the power is just not worth the risk to both life or licence. Whereas the Tracer gives you that bit of everything, and you don’t mind banging it though wet / winter riding too. A real experience opener, opposed to having an 8k naked thing that’s only used in dry weather. You’d even give the sports bike guys a run on some twisties 😉
There are only 2 things id change about the looks. The pannier shape and the headlights. And despite those things I still look back at it every time I dismount.
When this bike was announced, I said I was going to buy one! I loved it, yes, even the clocks and the one-eyed lights. Then I found it had a thumb wheel on the RH bar. I lost my right thumb 16 years ago so this is a deal breaker for me. I have a Yamaha Super Tenere and that has a lovely simple set of switch gear on the LH bar, so why did Yamaha make it so complicated? 10 settings for the heated grips? Come on guys!
I went into a bike shop and wanted a 600 scooter for some fun and walked out with the Tracer9GT I love everything about it including it ts looks but I would like to thank you for your reviews as it was these reviews that helped me purchase, nice one guys. The only mod was I re sculptured the seat, and I hate where the key is lol you have to dive in to get to it
Spot on. Agree with all of the points reviewed. I must say though, the S doc 100 total gel cleaner seems to have wrecked havoc with some bits and stripped black paint off. Centre stand, centre stand mount, the rear shock mount, suspension sensor rod etc. since then i switched to muc off. Also, the plastic cover over the clutch basket’s paint started stripping and cracking, possibly due to the same reason. Since, yamaha changed the cover foc. Also, have had the stalling once coming to stop at a roundabout, yamaha have released an ECU update and the fuelling now is way better, short of having a proper remap! Clocks are shite. MRA Vario screen is awesome (5’10) and otherwise it’s an amazing bike!
Hmm... if I were doing more touring woth my wife, I'd go for the Versys. If I were to be using it more on my own for back roads, the Tracer. Cheers, John
@@bennettsbikesocial cheers for the reply I’m torn between the 2 bikes I think the Versys has more weather protection from what I read but the tracer is a lot lighter I’m coming from an fjr 1300.
Thanks for this guys. I bought a 24 Tracer GT+ recently. This clip helped me decide. You bring up steering dampers. Imagine you're not an overly confident rider, riding normal speeds but in Asia on sometimes dreadful roads, and money is not a barrier, if i install an Oohlins steering damper is there any downside?
I have a Tracer 9 GT and have a Yamaha 51 litre Top Box for it, but can't use it as in these Covid disrupted times, the mounting plate has been on back order for 5 months. I presume Shad make the mounting plate, but Shad HQ in Spain said they knew nothing about it, so perhaps it is Shad US. However, I would like to see if I can source a mounting plate myself seeing Yamaha NZ seem incapable of supplying one.
Does the tracer 9gt do anything better than the bmw s1000xr? Which one is more comfortable riding around for a full day? Does the tracer soak up the bumps better? Thank you
Sure hope you guys are planning to get your hands on the 2025 tracer. Yamaha does listen. New seat, display, windscreen, ymat, front end, new led lights. I hear the only model we'll be getting in the US is the tracer 9 base. 12,599. Doesn't hurt my feelings though. I don't need all the bells and whistles
Can anyone tell me why, after a few thousand miles, the exhaust looks so discoured on this model? Spoils the look for the bike for me - Or is it just a case of keeping it clean?
24:10 Perhaps the RUclips commenter meant 140 kph, not 140 mph? Seems more likely. Regarding seat comfort, installing Sargent seats on my 2018 Tracer 900 provided a big improvement.
a few points, in my 53 yrs with a range of bikes, i stopped using top boxes decades ago and if touring panniers and tank bag has always been my go to set up. Then in 2007 a I bought a sport touring Ducati 916 ST4 which I've still got and done about 90,000 kms on in bog std trim except Zero Gravity ST screen. These Tracer 9 Gt are great bikes but it is not acceptable too have this well reported weave. All bikes can get disturbed following a high sided vehicle because of the unavoidable swirling air currents. They said 140 mph becomes a potentially dangerous situation. Even when totally loaded and two up my 22 yr old ST4 is totally stable and still pulling strong upto 150mph (only done twice one up) and the handling and road holding flawless. No need for steering damper! your tyres Bridgestone T32 will be great touring, but as an old codger i need my Bridgestone S22 hypersports as mental insurance, but they do not heat up quickly (10kms needed) as if give it the throttle whilst vertical it lights up the rear tyre (triple compound). upside is medium and shoulder grip is phenominal. just my 2 cents.
Interesting discussion about features and value vs. the subjective experience of “loving” or being passionate about a bike… look-back factor if you will. I quite like the looks of the Tracer 9 GT, but if I’m being honest, the bikes I really love are the modern classics, like a Z900RS, which has no tech or comfort features at all. But I feel like I’m I’m in high school looking at my crush when I see and hear one. And at the end of the day that is what it boils down to. There’s nothing pragmatic or practical about motorcycling for me no matter hard I try to convince my wife of it. It’s about thrills, the beauty of the machine, and the joy of the ride.
I’m thinking of changing from 650 Interceptor to Tracer 700 or Tracer 900. Which should I go for? I don’t want to be cramped, I won’t be riding 2 up. I want a decent screen??? Any other suggestions
Old vid now but I noticed you are calling the original version the "MR-09 Tracer" Must be UK/Euro naming because in the US everyone calls that original generation the "FJ09" I think though I have only heard of them never had or even rode one personally. Shoot now there is significantly updated Tracer 9gt+ so 4th generation? Depending what constitutes a true generation ? given it is still the same engine frame wheels bod ywork and more
Great review... I have a 2021 T9GT and love it, despite a few shortcomings... Seat sucks, windscreen funnels all the wind into your face, horrible... The ride by wire restrictions make it feel neutered in 2nd more than any other gear for some reason... You pin the throttle and nothing happens till you hit 6000rpm... The dash is cool, but they couldn't add pairing to your phone? And the stock T32 tires are garbage. I found the profile squaring and sluggish to turn in, and grip was poor. Threw them in the trash after 300 miles and switched to Michelin Road 5's and now I can rail on the bike and do a track day with no issues.
@@bennettsbikesocial The T32's aren't good for how I ride. Had the back end step out on me twice and that was it. In the trash they went, no issues with the new tires. About the midrange... It's ok once you get above 6k on the tach. Before that, especially in second gear, its horrible. It's like 1980's turbo lag. You are at 4,000rpm in second, and you pin the throttle, and it takes a very slow and lazy 4 seconds to climb to 6000rpm, and then you feel the throttlebodies open up and it takes off. It's downright lethargic before 6000rpm. I guarantee that when I get it on the dyno and my tuner pulls up the ETV tables in Woolich, that I will see that at 100% throttle, it's delivering 40% power or so until it hits 6000rpm and then increases... A lot of bikes do these types of restrictions today, but Yamaha seems to have gone overboard on this particular model...
I found the same with the T32's slipped a few times too many for my liking. I've changed to Road 6's and the difference is very noticeable. I also found the acceleration was sluggish, almost as though it was in a rain mode. After the recall re-flash it is a totally different bike.
@@TheStevephi I just had the recall reflash done, and didn't feel any difference. The sluggish throttle response, I can address with an aftermarket flash from my tuner using the Woolich software... Here is a link to my tuner, showing all the restrictions that Yamaha throws in there on our cousin, the MT09... The Tracer, given its role as a sport tourer, has to be at LEAST as restricted as the new MT09, so the gains should be pretty significant... ruclips.net/video/irj6E41c94s/видео.html
I pretty much agree with you, the T32's are the worst tyres I've ever had on a bike, poor feedback and complete lack of trust in them. Stability at speed is the second letdown for me on this bike, prob due to yamaha's touring screen, tyres and the occasional side wind going over 90 can be a big mistake. That said, on a sunny spring day with proper tyres this bike is a joy.
I have the 2015 abs version of the tracer 900, start to looking for the my next bike, not sure if I want to go back to a triumph tiger 1050 sport( no new modelversions yet) or go for the current version, I like them both triple engines but the problem I have is when I am two up with full luggage, the bike is very top heavy and find the wheels/ bottom want to wash out, so ride gingerly and not any real distance or confidence in the bike. The Tiger 1050 2010 found it never had that problem. so does the new version of the tracer able to lessen or elimates the problem of wheels wash out. Tyres I put the Mitchelin road 5 on my bike and not look back to the maxxis tyres which came on the bike when I bought it. No steering damper.
Although I have never rode the BMW1000RS. I can imagine it is a better bike than the Yamaha T9. It would certainly cost a lot more. Value for money, reliability, excitement and for a do everything bike, I’d pick the Yamaha. If I went European, the BMW. There is a lot said about the looks of a motorcycle, I can’t say any adventure bike really catching my eye. They are though a very practical format that keeps getting better. It’s easy to see why there so popular. As I don’t have a huge commute or go touring, I’m happy for now to stick to the sport naked format but might consider the T7 if my circumstances changed
Interesting review and great info, thanks to you both. As a first bike it’s tempting, but the NC750x grabs more of my attention. What would your thoughts be in this? I know it’s different, but both seem easy and unsurprising to ride.
Both great machines - Steve Lamb here has just bought an NC750. The Honda is in some ways more practical, with its storage area, but it's less powerful. I'd say the Tracer has more potential to surprise you with its performance (not in a bad way). John
@@bennettsbikesocial Thanks John for taking the time to reply. I have to say, being new to motorcycling, the Honda appeals more, as I know zero about Yamaha….. I’d prefer reliable and cheap, and the NC seems better value. I’ve much to learn and you (and the team of ace testers) are making things easier for me. My DAS instructor has just bought an NC too…. My choice is being assimilated by others who I respect, towards my preferred choice 😃 I just have to pass the test, and spend the next 3 years training to become an instructor 👍👍
I loved my MT09 Tracer (2015) , had ktech fitted front and rear, and with pilot road 5's it was fantastic on twisty roads. But the throttle was such an on off switch that at low speeds, and moving off at turns and stuff just ruined the rides. (Tried a booster plug, meh) Now you've given me a notion for another one. BAH!
@Jamie i had an Ecu update and mine stalled over or twice as mentioned. The update transforms the fuelling very notably, it’s short of having a tuning upgrade! Much more responsive in all modes, especially from taking off abs much smoother QS.
It should be fine with anything, but if you want to run some trials you might find you're happier with the premiums (I'd say Esso Supreme + 99 is best as while marked E5, and except in the north, Scotland, Wales and Cornwall, it's actually got no ethanol in at the moment). www.esso.co.uk/en-gb/fuels/petrol At the current prices though, I'm increasingly using the cheapest I can find, only putting the premium in my bikes I rarely ride. Cheers, John
I'd dearly love to see a Bennetts comparison video in a wind tunnel of different windscreens. The 1st gen tracer was an awful beast for buffeting.
That would be amazing! And the tracer 700 needs the same procedure!
People buy horsepower but they ride torque.
in the end it doesn't matter, one enjoys the bike and shifts they way they feel like, obviously if one feels the need for more power one allows the revs to go higher, but nobody is worried if they are using every last HP from the bike if you aren't racing
Another superb video! As I've had the T9-GT since they came out; moving from a 2018 T900-GT, I watch any videos of these bikes with interest. Here's my 2-pence worth:
Engine Performance - This is certainly a step-up in torque from the previous version, with less vibration and smoother (yet more 'urgent') power delivery.
Your summary was and is much appreciatey. I am currently debating wether or not to buy a Tracer 9 GT possibly GT+
Brilliant review from you both. Loved listening to your comments even though I have an xsr900. True professionals keep them coming. 👍
Thanks! All the best, John
This is very true. It is just more complicated as some may think. Totally agree buddy. Drop by, you may find it interesting. :)
Good review chaps…
Just have a few of my own thoughts to add here after my first 6,500 miles.
I’d agree entirely with that comment, with it being a Swiss Army Knife of a bike! 👍🏻
I still love mine and have no plans to swap in anytime soon.
This hurts my eyes and doesnt justify the statement that they are really good
Nice review. Love how u at least road them for a long time instead of just 1 trip of an hour and reviewing.
Keep up the good work
Because chasing lean angles on the street is how you judge how good a tyre is. :)

But nothing beats the tracer when it comes to value for money, and I have always said its a "jack of all trades and master of none!"
But what Simon was right in saying was "when you look back it should make you think wow that's my bike!" and ok it doesn't!.
But for me I need that Swiss army knife!.
I'd really like to know which the bikes are that Simon mentioned were hard to give back after a long test period. Brilliant review, really liked the exchanged and added opinions of the owners.
Could make a good video!
The community polling for a less biased approach to the general opinion on the ergo, features, engine, etc, is really cool. This will be my next bike.
Thanks for this! All the best, John
Wow! Long, but extremely detailed! Thank you!
I’m Seriously considering this as my next bike, but have not found a dealer willing to demo. However, l loved the demo ride of the MT-09 SP!
Excellent review. Really useful to hear comments about the suspension, coz I live in the Fens, and I know you guys do a lot of miles on Fen roads!
Using Calimoto now..... because of your content.
Great reviews, as always.
Thanks! I was using it today! Cheers, John
I had the first tracer and went through 5 screens and ended up the best was no screen. Nice video comparing older versions and very detailed and love using the feedback from owners. Great idea. Re the triples, my last 3 bikes all been triples and love them.
No screen was best - Really?
Love the charts! The fact that you took the time to survey other riders was interesting and helpful. Thinking about the bike in the states. The tiny main LED lights are worrisome. I’ve had people roll down their windows at a stoplight and tell me that one of my lights was burned out. I wish Yamaha would just keep both bulbs on with low beam.
It depends on the law... In EU the bikes must have odd numbers off lights....
Yeah, gonna need you two to do a review like this fir every motorcycle. Ever. Every motorcycle ever.
I finally got to test one today and loved it. The seating position, the feel, so many things have put this in contention as my next bike. But I agree with them about the looks, just don’t love the looks.
I did buy the Tracer in red. Love this bike, even more so once I got the Ermax screen.
The Tracer screen seemed to push the wind right at my head 😁
That engine is a peach - the ergonomics of the Tracer just fit so well. Flickable on country roads using the midrange in 4th gear was a joy.
The ride home on my CBR felt uncomfortable if I'm honest 😊 I'm now looking to get the Tracer GT though I need to demo that as the Plus has one screen rather than 2...
Great video guys 👌
Thanks, and enjoy making the choice! Cheers, John
Great review, thanks to you both. This is on my list of bikes to test ride this year and has given me lots of things to think about 🙂
Thanks for watching! Let us know what you choose. Cheers, John
Thanks very much! All the best, John
@@bennettsbikesocial Thanks John.
What a fantastic and thorough review! All bike reviews should follow this format. I own a MT09 Tracer and I get the weave behind high sided vehicles. I presumed it was the short swinger arm or crap suspension. The tracer 9 hasn't improved this.
What kinda speeds? Would a steering damper have helped do you think?
Excellent! Love this long video reviews format, you've been doing! Cheers from Ireland
Nice honest review. It shows that there is no perfect bike, a bike for all use.
But the T9 is great. Rode 2 yesterday. That engine 😁
There is a recall for the engine stalling (software update). Still riding my sporty first mt-09 tracer! Hearing your story the new one is more comfy / touring. Greets from Holland.
Cheers - yes, this was filmed a fair while before the recall, but I mentioned it in the description. All the best, John
I love my 2022 Tracer GT, compared to what's on the market , they can't be beat.
Great video, I love mine, the recent recall's made it ever smoother, not done mega miles on mine yet, dont like the tiny text etc on the L screen
I thought the OEM tyres are fine, buffeting from the screen can be a tad annoying, apart from that what a loverly functional bike, M
Got the big touring screen. Love it, especially on the interstate raised to high setting, no turbulence and really quiets the ride significantly.
Have to say again, love this style of review, really gets into nitty gritty. Comes across as 2 keen bikers talking, not just 2 presenters. 👍👍
Thanks so much! All the best, John
Thank you 👍
@ 27:00 the first generation of the Yamaha Tracer 900 was temporarily removed from the use of French police forces in 2019 because it sometimes showed hazardous behavior on bumpy roads at very brisk paces.
I wonder if there is a sticking plate, or slipper mechanism problem at play?
my 19 plate was exactly the same too. never got to the bottom of it
Same on my MT10 when cold.
Same here on my MT10
Same on my mt10
Yep, same here.
Best decision ever, I'm in love with that one :D
Greetings from sunny Greece
I noticed the GT is a bit unstable when pushing it in the corners.
Big fan of Calimoto. I use it everywhere for my fun rides and then pay for premium when I tour out of the ‘free’ area.
Highly recommend it!
Excellent - thanks for this! Cheers, John
Awesome video guys. I have really been debating one of these.
This is the exact what I needed. Think I’m gonna order one!!
Brilliant! Cheers, John
Always appreciate long term reviews.
Great Video boys 👍
as an owner of a 2019 tracer 900 GT , and an 2021 1250 GS Rallye which im about to sell, the tracer is absolutely an awesome ride which is why im keeping it
Guys, when discussing height, total height doesn't correspond to leg length. Some people are taller with shorter legs and vica versa.
Yeah. I'm 6 foot and cursed with a 30" inseam.
Brilliant, thanks! All the best, John
When speaking about build quality I’m surprised that you didn’t touch on the exhaust.
The one on John’s bike is pretty sorry looking for a bike with 5-6000 miles on the clock.
It cleans up fine - si had done his. Cheers, John
it’s a huge advantage for me and I don’t know why, but people usually don’t mention that thing.
Good question, I agree and still looking for that answer as well 🤔
One does get spoiled with no engine heat.
Thanks!
Absolutely love the T9GT except fuel gauge (kinna hard to estimate fuel beyond half tank) & it's missing a fuel range. Cheers from Sarawak.
The girl next door, but not the prom queen!
really great reviews 👍 btw what brand and model is the leather jacket you're wearing?
I've got an RST Fusion jacket on. Cheers, John
What did you notice in particular with the Ermax sport screen? Was there buffeting? Where did the Air hit you? Thanks.
Hi I'm still waiting to hear what the v7 sounds like with the arrow exhaust please as I'm Interested in the v7 stone. Thanks Stuart 👍
Sorry to hear that! Cheers, John
Tracer 9 GT+ 2024 is controlled with joystick on the left side. On the right is only start/kill brake lever and throttle as normal.
Outstanding review, outstanding channel. The best.
The recall remap fixes the stalling thing you have experienced :)
John how would you compare it to the long term Kawasaki Versys 1000 you had? Which would you choose if you were to buy one?
Hmm... if I were doing more touring woth my wife, I'd go for the Versys.
Recall has just been issued by Yamaha including a stalling issue
Thanks for this guys. I bought a 24 Tracer GT+ recently. This clip helped me decide. You bring up steering dampers. Imagine you're not an overly confident rider, riding normal speeds but in Asia on sometimes dreadful roads, and money is not a barrier, if i install an Oohlins steering damper is there any downside?
There shouldn't be, be I've only ever really felt one was absolutely necessary, and that was on terrible roads on a Monster S4
Can i ask why the outer lamp only works. Not the twin head lamp just the fog style lamps
Just the way they designed it. Cheers, John
Just started researching ways to reduce buffeting. Today is first time I heard references about lowering a windscreen to reduce buffeting. 🤔🎶
Does the tracer 9gt do anything better than the bmw s1000xr? Which one is more comfortable riding around for a full day? Does the tracer soak up the bumps better?
Thank you
Thanks! I’d like to see a Yamaha Tenere 900 Adventure model!?
Same. That would be awesome and i would definitely consider seriously getting one. There must be a replacement for their Tenere 1200. 🤞🏻
Great conversation, it took this bike off my list 🙂
Great review - thanks - Im going to get one for sure . Can you tell me what was the name and brand ( some link :) ? of y screen ? Cheers
It's a Ermax Sport, from Pyramid Plastics
timestamp 7:11 The old MT-09 actually has more HP from 2000 - 5,200 rpm where you use it the most. Look at the chart.
There was a recall of the Tracer GT stalling. I had the same issue.
Does calimoto support USA roadways? And what was that cleaner/protector spray you guys mentioned?
I am in Thailand and there are routes for rides local to me. I am sure it works very well in the US.
Yes it does
Interesting discussion about features and value vs. the subjective experience of “loving” or being passionate about a bike… look-back factor if you will.
Well said! Cheers, John
Depending what constitutes a true generation ? given it is still the same engine frame wheels bod ywork and more
I love the look, great review, thanks
Thanks very much! All the best, John
I like the taller screen on the red bike.
Surprised to hear you didn't like the T32s, and that you find there's no midrange!
@@bennettsbikesocial Thanks John! The Tiger 800 has caught my eye too….. decisions, decisions eh…? 😜🙏
Merci pour ces réflexions approfondies sur cette très sympathique moto
I loved my MT09 Tracer (2015) , had ktech fitted front and rear, and with pilot road 5's it was fantastic on twisty roads. But the throttle was such an on off switch that at low speeds, and moving off at turns and stuff just ruined the rides. (Tried a booster plug, meh)
Now you've given me a notion for another one. BAH!
ivans reflash has fixed that snatchy throttle, just got back from 200 mile ride in the CA mountains. different bike for sure.(against no flash)
They have just issued a recall, saying it may be engine stalling software issue
Yes, this was filmed a fair while before the recall, but I mentioned it in the description. All the best, John
@Jamie i had an Ecu update and mine stalled over or twice as mentioned. The update transforms the fuelling very notably, it’s short of having a tuning upgrade! Much more responsive in all modes, especially from taking off abs much smoother QS.
Hello I own a tracer 9 gt 2021 and would like to know what fuel to use supermarket fuel or go for higher octane from main garages
Many thanks Phil
It should be fine with anything, but if you want to run some trials you might find you're happier with the premiums (I'd say Esso Supreme + 99 is best as while marked E5, and except in the north, Scotland, Wales and Cornwall, it's actually got no ethanol in at the moment). www.esso.co.uk/en-gb/fuels/petrol
At the current prices though, I'm increasingly using the cheapest I can find, only putting the premium in my bikes I rarely ride. Cheers, John
If you didn’t go for the Tracer 900 what other bike manufacturer would you go for.
Similarly if you didn’t go for a Tracer 700 what would you go for
