For this project Zach started with a Ford F450 Single Cab Ambulance chassis running the Ford 6.0 Diesel. The first set of upgrades necessary were a full "bulletproffing." If you're not familiar with these diesels, the 6.0 is notorious for some critical failures. Once corrected through a process called bulletproofing, the engine is quite powerful and reliable. They installed performance heads and a new turbo and did an EGR delete. The work was performed by McDiesel Repair in Reno, NV (www.mcdieselrepair.com/) and Desert Diesel Repair in Phoenix, AZ (www.desertdieselrepairllc.com/). With these repairs and tuning completed they have had no issues with the engine. Zach says it has no shortage of power and can pull up to 14 MPG curising, and 9 when towing their samurai.
In the front the Ford has am ARM Winch bumper holding a Smittybilt 17,500# winch. For lighting the truck has Hella Rallye lights, Baja Designs s2 Pros and a Ridig 40 " Light bar.
EXTERIOR
The former ambulance body has a number of sturdy compartment doors built in. Zach has repurposed the compartments to cart accessories, gear and equipment. Unlike a regular RV, the doors are reinforced and insulated and provide access to the water tanks, power systems and batteries of the house. To keep the ground clearance high, Zach has mounted the grey water and fresh water tanks above the frame inside these compartments. This not only keeps them out of the rocks and grime, but ensures that they won't freeze in cold weather.
The water is heated by an Isotemp water heater that heats with engine coolant or an electric coil. The air is heated with an Espar D2 diesel heater. This is a tiny little unit that runs off it's own diesel tank and provides ample heat to the interior. The heater, as well as the ambient heat in the house keeps the Battle Born Lithium batteries warm.
For suspension, the truck has upgraded Atlas leaf springs in the front to effect a lift to fir the 41 inch Continental MPT tires. The fenders are cut out and fitted with Bushwacker flares to make room. In the read, the ambulance air suspension was replaced with custom Atlas springs as well www.atlassuspension.com. Damping is by custom valved Icon 2 inch shocks. To stabilize this 12,500 truck, he has Hellwig swaybars front and rear.
To run the Continental tires in a single wheel configuration, Zach got custom wheels from First Attack Engineering.
INTERIOR
Inside is a surprisingly spaceous room with baltic birch cabinetry with marine latches, a stainless steel sink, an induction cook top in the kitchen. An Isotemp fridge keeps the food cold. The dinette is upholstered in green vinyl as is the mattress of the king size bed. The dinette has a marine table top that hides two clothes drawers under the bed. The dinette seats hide storage in the backs and bottoms for additional clothing or gear.
The bathroom is a really smart design. The house as a fairly big pass through into the cab of the truck and Zach made great use of that space for the shower. A stainless steel pan lines for floor here and sliding vinyl doors from Stoett Industries hold in the water from the stainless shower fixture. Off to the side is a Thetford toilet below an exhaust fan with integrated LED lighting.

This managed to have everything you need, while being compact, while also looking sorta good. Only problem is the colours and patterns of the interior but that’s up to preference
“DIY” lol. This thing is wild. Can you imagine converting one of those dual cab International ambulances?
Check out @fugarwi on Instagram
Yeah that’s my speed.
I'm thinking about it now...
Perfekt bed and shower solution, very nice over all. I loved it.
I'm confused as to why this is refered to as DIY if they are a company that builds campers.
My assumption is that they did a DIY build and then ended up building full time.
The only time anyone would be happy to be in an ambulance!!!!! Looks Great bro 👌 stay blessed bro 🙏!!!!one of the best I seen so far !!!! And explained in detail!!!!!
So Nice! I'm a Disabled Veteran and I'd dream to have something so nice. I'd pack my Service Dog and Myself up and hit the road full time. Thank you for sharing and allowing me to dream. 😂
Wow very very similar to my build I had a 2005 450 utility body fully built 650 hp just could not get the ride to soften up for road travel felt like a school bus lol nice build man
Great ideas and build. Seems to have few rough edges. The hex bolts on the bed slide out for example. Use carriage bolts and acorn nuts. The over cut corner on the show door. Love the build and layout.
This is a dream vehicle
I have supplemental air bags on the rear of my van. It helps lift the rear if it’s loaded and sagging. It’s perfect for towing. Let the air out, back up to the hitch, air it up to the max, and it lifts the tongue jack off the ground.
A great design, the bed works well. A lot of good design features and ideas. One of the better ambulance conversions I have seen, well done.
This rig has everything you need for off grid camping. I would get one myself if I could afford it. It has so many cool features. My favorite is the shower because it’s unique and so is the king size bed. Great job guys!👍
cant agree more
Great build. We are doing an overlander build off a E450 box van 20ft chassis. Building a custom box with a 3ft extension.
Again great vehicle thanks for sharing 👍
What a clean cut and efficient build. Love it. The galley seems unified in design, with a low profile, modern touch, very nice. Bed area is very functional with a dedicated garage area and under bed storage. The bathroom is lovely. They have lightweight foam tiles that you stick on that resemble marble - Pelham or something. Waterproof. This will save you time on next build - use these tiles.
20:54 - LED light strip. Go one more and add a light strip cover so it does not shine into eyes when dining or in bed. German RVs do this, and its very elegant. You never want raw lights.
21:58 - I love this shower and its a very smart placement in hallway. You might want to cut a mat out of solid wood on CNC machine to custom fit the shower pans. Euro RVs are all doing that. No nails to rust, no screws, easy one piece with rubber legs glued on. Raises the pan for standing so its a smooth walk to cab area, and keeps feet dry while water drains off slowly. No sloshing either. The toilet placement is the very best place to put it. One other guy had done this. Very smart!!!
24:21 - Personally, I need a bigger 6 cu ft fridge with separate freezer, and would sacrifice garage for it, This is too small for stocking up on food and will be a pain over time.
One tip more - the spice rack left of sink looks gorgeous! However, if you made it a pull out pantry for cans or spices, you would need to cover up sides with plywood. Then you could hang IKEA Bekvam / Rajtan spice racks along that wooden wall, and also a small dish rack. More space for kitchen. Consider too, the concept of a hinged or swing out shelf pantry system against a wall. Closed, it is a wall with hooks on outside. Unlatch and swing out the boxed shelves and a huge pantry opens up for cooking or jewelry, or even clothes laid flat on hangers. Visit an airplane bathroom, you get a lot of ideas for compact spaces.
The motor details went a bit over my head but you seem to have done an exceptional job of converting this road vehicle to an off road van. Bravo! Those springs look very rugged. I probably need that for my Class C too, Very impressive overall build, thanks for the tour! Love it.
The top end DIY 4x4 ambulance conversions I've seen and liked so far are way unaffordable. Thus, I'll have to be satisfied with a minimal level of conversion to stay within a budget I can afford. This is a nice rig. I love it. Particularly the ability of living off grid for upwards of three months.
Agree completely. A standard van E-Series is all I want. I have several 2014 ambos, and wheelchair vans i LOVE the v10 (some have 5.4) , and posi rears. The v10 gets same mileage as 5.4, and for mountain passes and pulling a CJ7 on highway i want the power.
THIS BUILD IS AMAZINGLY BEAUTIFUL
That interior is amazing!!!
PROPS for the tips at the end of the video!!!! I'm born and raised in the mountains of Colorado and there are very few things that we hate more then when people take big rigs off trail and destroy terrain.
Just saw one of these campers on the freeway in WA. So pretty had to look it up.
I'd make minor changes to certain things though for balance of the truck and easy serviceable maintanence from the outside and inside. I do like the exterior design of it.
-Build Gray/black and toilet Water tank Accessible from both sides under the shower and toilet where the that battery storage is at. Can use a cassette or build a tank to drain like the Rv's for it. All water usage of Showers, Cooking, and Using the Toilet all goes down to 1 tank under it.
-Left side storage next to driver door use for CampFlux Portable gas water heater, Water Pump, and Propane tank. Easy to hook up shower, sink
- Remove Top cabinet shelf. Add Small Microwave above the The sink , but switch the sink and cook top around to be easier to hook everything up and drain. Also when cooking the window is right in front of the heat to blow everything out.
-Dometic Fridge and Freezer Slide out under the sink counter top. Can just easily load up groceries into it from that outside door under the sink. Pots And pans can be store under the seat.
-Electric Panel control and fuse box built Next to side Door Entrance and above the main batteries for the Main House battery.
-Rear Storage at the double door under bed is Fresh water tank.
-Built a Double Swing Tire mount on the Rear to mount the Spare tire to be easy serviceable.
-Solar Panel Rooftop.
-Get rid of that Panel board U shape on the toilet. to Give more space and avoid hitting your head when sitting down.
Awesome build. Shower section is pretty clever.
What a Awsome rig 👍
I love seeing “DIY” in all these overland vehicles youtube videos only to hear the owner mention sending their whole car to a shop somewhere to get a whole suspension rebuild, transmission conversion etc. unless you are doing it in your driveway like some of us. Not DIY.
Yeah, this is about as “DIY” as a “checkbook tour” of the service industry- with sponsor-like plugs.
Only, they shoulda designed it, too!
Mine? truly cheap- before Ambu’s were a thing- but it still lights-up a site.
You and C Luek can keyboard warrior all you want. Pretty weak talking down on this build because he outsourced the 4WD and suspension, but engineered and thought through every single change, built the entire interior, electrical, water system, woodworking, welding, etc. etc. Where's your 100% DIY rigs guys? Did you mold the rubber tires in your garage?
As a retired Medic/Firefighter, I think this is really cool. I prefer a much smaller footprint myself, but this is going to make someone a very nice overlander.
Put skinnier tires on, less footprint that way. lol
@@Natschke_Family_Adventures ba dum BA!
A compartment where I can almost keep a pair of skis is an absolute must-have.
Very sharp looking interior.
This is a sick rig!!
Well done loved your rig
@16:36 - this makes me think that you could use opened cabinet interior (so side facing up when open) as additional counter top especially if the part facing up is thicker butcher block material... great stuff!
This is awesome ! Great job!! I want one. Dang. For a home! Can't afford a camper.
Love the build but also love the treadlightly note.
Nice !!!
Beautiful rig. I noticed that the leaf spring U-bolts looked vulnerable when rock crawling.. Years ago, I equipped my 1975 CJ-5 with a set of shackle U bolts skid plates made by Con-Fer. I'm not sure if they are even in business anymore, but the design was simple and cheap. Maybe consider adding them to your vehicle.
Very impressive,!!!
11:47 Enough space for the entire solar system, what a badass deal.
Love it !!!
Yay!
i'll bet this project took a lot of patients
We keep our nose to the grindstone - ...

@@autarkyev2880 It was a ambulance patient joke.
Lol
Love!!!!
Great Review thank you 👍 🇺🇲
THE VERMONTER
Nice rig
DIY!!? this guy is a pro
Damn my dream of grid beast here in Kenya
Is it possible to add a lazyboy recliner to any of your custom ambulance camper designs ? I want to be able to fall asleep on the recliner if I have trouble falling asleep on a bed.
All I see is 💰💰💰
Pretty bad ass 👍
If you had the opportunity to choose the amount (and location) of exterior storage cabinets, how many would you have, and where would you place them?
Would like to find information on the interior puck lights. I am not finding anything. Thanks, Bob
How has the floor held up to van life as opposed to boat life? I am considering using the same but I am on the fence. Any experienced insight would be helpful. Thanks. Nice build by the way.
I love this vehicle if it is already sold I would love to hear about a duplicate vehicle and how much it cost
I’m looking into van life myself and i have narrowed down to the used used ambulances, what’s the average cost i’m looking at?
Hi who makes the roof rack over the front cab? I am trying to find one for my ambulance.
First video here, just wondering what u did with the electrical system?, I have a 2003 forde450 horton havnt done anything yet
Beautiful interior. That fridge is tiny though.
The diesel heater controller is in a odd place. At night when the bed is extended you would have to climb out of bed and crawl under it to adjust the heat. Nice truck though.
NOBODY makes aircon inside campers !! it's impossible to to sleep when +35 C outside ! this is torture !
You guys are so into fire and burning, I’m surprised you don’t have a fire pit in the middle of your camper!
Do you know a good way to do that?
I’ve been trying to find more details on the interior coin lights seen at the 17 minute portion. It sounded like lumacoin but I’m not finding results.
Since its a german company, he probably mispronounced it.
Bear spray placement is plug
I love it! Send info…
A word of caution, New Jersey officials discovered a truck ad stating the emissions had been deleted and refused to let him resell it or register it unless it was returned to stock. When he couldn’t meet their deadline he had to scrap it. I don’t know if other municipalities will also start doing this, so people should probably not be making public comments about their vehicles being bulletproofed.
Why did you install the paper towel in front of the window instead of the ideal space next to it?
Can i ask what size tires?
I see only one key issue. Your rear brakes are wide open to be bashed on rocks and such. Should have just swaped to an srw axle instead of running a single wheel on the drw rearend. You saved money but not if you bash those rotors on something
Neat truck anybody check his blood pressure looks like he's going to vapor lock any second
is icon 2.0 enough to support that much weight? I have fox 2.0 on 4runner and I can put too much weight on it
The springs support weight. Shocks just control the oscillation.
How much is something like this
How much you sold it for?
How much was that for sale for
Should the rotopx fuel container be yellow since it holds diesel?
def not blue
It SOLD
I have "heard" those Continental Tires don't wear evenly and the Goodyear military tire is a much better choice.
Cost?
Def 100k AT LEAST
You'd HAVE to "delete" the 6.0 COMPLETELY for me to even consider that rig. LOL
Costume equals big $$$. Nice if you have the cash.
dIY. Yes too many little things. CSA standards have specific location for shore power
Is this Unit still available for sale?
I don’t think so.
Is this for sale? Is there a link to the asking price?

You still have the Kelderman
No ! Altas custom leaf packs all 4 corners.
What happens when they don’t sell diesel anymore?
There’s no way this vehicle will last that long.
An evaporator cooler?!!!! Wasting water on cooling in the desert is insane! Why don’t you use solar?! 12v ac split mini!
There’s plenty of water in the desert if you know where to look.
Do you have videos of the shuttle buses?
I don’t, Zach does.
@@AllTerrainFamily how can I find them. Thank you.
They’re on his website. Autarkey Expedition Vehicles.
Check out our videos ! This is Zach BTW!
@@autarkyev2880 thanks! Followed you on Instagram yesterday too!
Q:What is the fuel consumption?
A:Yes.
I mean its cool and stuff but i really dont get that pick up camper thing, the big ass hood is Taking so much space just for the engine. I would rather choose such thing as a ford E-350 and convert maybe axles and stuff its so much better space wise.
The only thing I do not like is bullet proof engine . Stay away from bullet proof engine and just go with 7.3 or Cummings .
How much? I love it.
This truck has already sold -

09.37 He weren’t for opening that door 🤷
DIY? oookay, cool truck though.
Is your truck for sale? Let me know if you are‼️thanks 😎🇺🇸👉🏻🌎
It looked great until he said 5’8 and under, at 6’2 I wouldn’t be comfortable.
Weird shower placement.
$$$$$$$$$
Then, Imagine sticking to that vinyl-covered bed ? HA. Next
Why do you need to take a camper into rugged terrain with no roads. Its idiotic. If anything happens, and it will happen for sure, you are stuck there, no help. And when you go back to smooth roads, your mpg drops to the point where you not only leave a horrible carbon footprint but go broke at gas station. For the few times you need ruggedness, you sacrifice mpg on every highway mile you drive. Pay pay pay pay pay. For the gas. The tires. The build. And no frills either. Makes zero sense. I would never go into terrain like that with a heavy van, heavy water tanks, stressing out every joint.
That being said, your interior design is very well done. Sleek, low profile cabinets, and bathroom is genius! Love the kitchen galley, stylish and functional. It makes a huge difference having a toilet and shower stall. Wish the fridge was bigger and there was a closet too. But one cannot have everything. Good job on build!
There is a 2 year wait list for Earthroamers (600k - 1.5million). This an ER-like vehicle at a fraction of the price. There's clearly a market for it and I can tell you from experience there's nothing like getting to the most remote locations in this country with a legit RV with top of the line systems to enjoy during your stay. If you've never been up a wild trail and camped where no other human will show up for weeks, then you just don't have a grasp on it. That doesn't make it idiotic at all, that just means you're a keyboard warrior with less desire to explore.
@@auxbuilt4190 You damage sensitive environments with a multi ton monster crushing everything under it. Every little ground burrow, birds nest or ground bee hives destroyed. Yes I do have a grasp on it. Its idiotic and hugely arrogant toward the earth.
DIY?! What part? Oh, the opening of your wallet - that was DIY.
Title says diy the owners says built by his outfitter buisness. Definitly a nice diy build all those exposed screws and panel gaps is where u save money compared to earth roamer
"Big, robust, reliable diesel truck" Then he said it has the Ford 6.0L engine!!!! Like bro someone should have done ANY homework. Should have gotten the 7.3L dood!
He is nervous 😓
Nice with good ideas. The furniture quality is not top level for European standards.
looks like a morgue, the Adams family would like to ride in it !
